Last Saturday my boyfriend and I checked out our groceries at TILL 8 and Mike M was working with a tall fair skinned teen with curly hair. Mikes opening line for conversation was "Are you excited for the super bowl?" My boyfriend responded that he was but more excited for the halftime show. Mike got visibly irritated and that simple comment struck a nerve because he went on this whole rant about how "back in his day" the halftime show didn't push a political agenda and actually had an entertaining performance. We tried de escalating the situation by letting him know we just liked the artist and we weren't trying to be political however he doubled down and kept going about how there's two half time shows and nudging on his co worker about it. The whole interaction was stifling and uncomfortable. He even added that him and his family were arguing over which half time show to actually watch. How is this appropriate conversation for grocery store check out? Especially coming from an employee from Trader Joe's. The lack of professionalism was so shocking from this grown man. After he finally finished bagging out stuff and heard his whole rant, I said "that's crazy" more so at the audacity of the whole interaction than the questions he kept asking us about this alternative show. This place sucks for several reasons, and it's mostly because of the staff: * They run out of the same items and the staff always make different excuses about why they couldn't restock them * When I asked them for the millionth time why they didn't have my items in stock, they were visibly upset. I'm the problem? * The staff spend an inordinate amount of time socializing and literally eating food in the backroom; it's annoying when you need help * The staff who stand in front of the store just talk to each other and don't say hello to new customers arriving. They just stand there like a bouncer at a night club -- it's weird. read more

I don't always review stores but when a store is exceptional then I try to make an effort to give them a review. This is my go to Trader Joe's and I've consistently found the staff to be super nice, they have a great selection always, and it's a clean spacious store. Staff here (and at most traders) are super friendly and kind. It's always awesome to support a business in which the staff are happy and treated well. Everyone I talk to who works here says what a great place it is to work and it's telling by everyone's attitudes and how they work together. When on the floor if you need help finding something everyone is always super nice. No issues. Also my pro tip is to come early, I won't venture into a Trader Joe's normally anytime after 10am. I like to get in early before the crowds and with that I can almost always find what I am looking for as they have a good selection here. The later in the day you come, the more likely they will have run out of some of your favorites. Never an issue for me though. This store is spacious and well organized. I've definitely got this store down in knowing where they keep everything and I appreciate that the aisles are wide and easy to navigate which isn't the case at every location. Prices are reasonable and produce is always fresh. Got to love their flowers and wine section as this location, always on point! Maybe the only ding is parking can be a bit hectic here but nothing they can do about that. It's a busy center and sometimes it's a little hard to get in and out as it gets busy. I was planning on getting home after my today's Trader Joe's shopping experience and write a 5-star review praising one of their Mates (Hawaiian shirts) for being so nice and courteous. I was in the wine section and noticed that a certain popular wine was still out of stock. On my yesterday's visit, I inquired from another staff member about this lack of inventory who said they'll have it back tomorrow. Hence the reason for my visit. TJs Alternate Universe As I was pondering what other brand of wine to pickup, since my current fave was still out of stock, I heard a voice saying, "can I help you with our wine selection?" That triggered the thought, am I hearing this correctly, there is actually a nice person working at TJs who isn't angry or disillusioned and is actually offering to help and elevate this patron's shopping experience? I said, "Hi, yes, I was here yesterday looking for this brand of wine and one of your staff members told me that you'll be getting 6 cases by today." She said "Let me check for you." (Trader Joe's corporate office give this Mate a raise.) She comes back after a few minutes saying, "I am not sure why they told you we'll be getting 6 cases, but we are planning to get 1 case by Monday." And she continued, "Would you like me to hold a couple of bottles for you?" Give This Mate a Raise This is the Trader Joe's alternate universe, where unlike the Star Trek reference, the staff are actually classy, helpful and courteous (in this rare reality). This extremely gracious mate was a woman and a brunette. I select 2 other bottles, pay for them and place them in my own shopping bag with the receipt inside. On my way out I decided to thank her again, but couldn't find her, and here's where the TJs Alternate Universe positive experience comes a crashing halt. The A-hole Mate Another mate, this time a white male, approaches me and quite rudely barks at me, "What you got in there, what's in your bag? Did you pay for it, where is the receipt?" What a total criminal a-hole! He is a complete dark shameful spot on the whole of TJs training of their staff (it doesn't seem there is any training at all). I remained quiet while this huge jerk looked in my bag to find the receipt, which he did. I told him, "You are offending the hell out of me." He said "Sorry," with his head down in shame and walked away. Frankly TJ, sorry does not cut it. Sorry Does Not Cut It I put the wines in my EV and walk back to the store to complain about this jerk for being so freaking offensive and totally ruining my previous positive experience. I spoke with another Mate at the CS counter, who apologized and said they have had a lot of theft. I chatted with him a while and told him this is no way to talk to your good customers. The a-hole Mate who was so rude could have easily said, "I am sorry Sir, do you mind if I check your bag. I see that you brought your own. Thanks. Ok, sorry about that (having found the receipt). Have a good day." That's how this awful checking of the bags is supposed to be handled correctly, not by treating a solid customer like a thief. On several occasions, a visit to TJ's would result in previously purchased items being out-of-stock (OOS), or worse, discontinued due to be deemed "seasonal". Until now, these excuses were accepted. When searching for a staple, everyday item (capers), their response to being OOS warranted this review as it undermines the traditional levels of customer service and shows a complete lack of respect or caring for their most important asset, their customer. Their knee-jerk excuse was "we don't do the ordering" (only reporting an OOS situation), but when asked how best to ensure product was received, the response from the store manager was unconscionable. "Go on to our website and write a comment explaining your issue and request that (capers) be ordered for this store". Seriously!!! My reply was "So you want ME to do YOUR work for you." OMG. Is this the way TJ's treats their customers? This system is in need of change. What does TJ's really think of their customers??? I now have my doubts. read more

Ok, well day before yesterday I went to Trader Joe's, they have a new line of small cloth bags. So when I got there a girl was outside saying it's closed., they had some kinda leak or something..I said ok. Hey do you have any of those bags"no we don't " I said do you know which bags I'm talking about "yes I do". Mind you another worker is outside on her phone. She looked up once but continued on her phone, I could tell she wanted to say something , but she didn't. I said ok. I then figured I like going to goodwill which is right next door, so I went there when I came out I could hear and in a very childish way " I just wanna buy a bag" the girl that talked to me in the beginning said to her get back inside. I wish I'd confronted her manager, right then, but they were closed and not letting patrons in. I am not going to fake it and say I buy my groceries here, I don't due to me craving the stuff that is bad for you. They do have a couple things that I prefer to purchase here and when I do I bring my kids. It is great for them because there are 3 stuffed animals hidden around the store for them to look for. If they find them they get a card stamped. All this keeps them distracted while I shop. The employees are always nice and attentive. Should my kids try and talk to them the employees are very nice to them, even when they might talk a little much. The store is always clean and has many registers running. read more

This site does have excellent parking, which not all TJ's can boast. The thing that holds me back from giving another star is the staff. They can be awesome or -- about 50% of the time -- they can be MUCH more interested in their own gossip session than helping customers. I don't know many people who don't like Trader Joe's. They have always been an excellent place to find, try and buy new food and drink items. When we visited this area we say the TJ's sign and needed to go. Going to Trader Joe's is not a want...it is a need for us. This location was had some great features. The aisleways were open with plenty of space that helped with the current social distancing aspects of shopping. The staff was super friendly from the managers down to the stocker/sackers. I didn't know the difference between the 399 499 prices the shelf was completely stocked with the same item the missing space is the one I got I was expecting to be 399 I asked and employee and showed it to them and they said oh yeah the one you have is 499 but left both sides full with the wrong price tag. I also told the cashier who did not care as well she just nodded. When I mentioned that any other grocery store would honor the price she just stood there waiting for me to pay and handed me the receipt after I did. It pains me to have to leave a 1 star review but I am hoping that the regional manager sees this comment and takes action. We have been shopping here for over 6 years and the reason isn't the food it's the people and the experience. The crew is great and they make all of my family feel welcomed. Fast forward to the last few weeks there's been a different vibe and turns out there's a new captain. We had the unfortunate pleasure of having an interaction with this person today. While being rung up and enjoying the amazing experience being provided by the crew member, in jumps the new captain (Mike is the name I believe) and starts rushing the crew member as if there was a line of 100 people waiting. In reality there was 1 person waiting and she didn't seem upset or anything that the crew member was having a pleasant interaction with my family. The captain jumps in throws all our groceries in a bag and then starts scanning the new persons items and we weren't even done. This isn't Vons or a regular grocery store and this guys approach was maximizing his interpretation of efficiency at the cost of a poor client experience he caused and even worse making the amazing crew member feel as if she had done something wrong by being about us, the customers. To the new captain, maybe it's time you reflect on your approach and utilize what Trader Joe's represents with Kaizen not as a means to speed and rush the interactions but to appreciate and recognize great crew members. It's already bad enough that this same new captain cutoff the fun activities for kids like the scavenger hunt that I have seen multiple kids upset about not having during my last few visits. Good Trader Joes. Drove by several times without going in because the lines were so long. Unfortunately this is a small store and popular so it's not uncommon to have to wait in line to get in so they can keep the number of customers inside at a safe level. Once inside not everyone really keeps 6ft distance because the aisles aren't super wide, but I felt safe nonetheless. Sadly, after not going into a TJs for over a year, I came to this one for one specific cookie and they were totally sold out. I learned later there might have been a supply issue on that specific cookie. Not their fault really, just a disappointment to me after such a long wait. Overall a good Trader Joe's. We've been coming here for the past 6 months now and the layout is nice. Unfortunately we just had a poor interaction which was partially our fault but still an inconvenient situation. We were buying some groceries and paying cash. The original change I handed the cashier was short $1 so I handed him another $20 bill which he then handed back my $14 to me. My total was $35.58 so I ended up giving him $40.60. He handed me back 2 cents and asked if we needed a receipt, we said no as normally we don't since we've never returned products at Trader Joe's. Not realizing that we were missing the $5 until leaving the parking lot when we were getting cash out for gas. So we then drove back over and went inside to the desk to let one of the Captain's know what had happened. He said since we had no receipt there wasn't anything he could do unless we knew which cashier it was. This is understandable but the way he presented himself and bluntly told us there wasn't anything he could was just not the customer service we are used to seeing at Trader Joe's. Normally we shop at the Thousand Oaks location where the staff is all wonderful, never any issues with transactions, and the Captain's have great customer service like the rest of the staff. The Captain we talked to at this location said maybe he could help if we pointed out the cashier, and yes we could have pointed out the cashier except he was no longer up front and assuming he may have gone on a break or gotten off work didn't want to walk around the store looking for him so our groceries could spoil in the car. It's not that big of a deal, just $5. Especially since we didn't want to lose almost $40 worth of groceries for $5 back lol. There was just no compassion from the Captain we spoke to and not even a sympathetic apology regardless of the situation. His response was just very "not my problem" but helping resolve issues with guests and providing good customer service should be his problem. The situation itself just felt inconvenient and not something we have ever ran into dealing with our usual Trader Joe's locations before coming here. Hopefully moving forward there's no other situations like this and we will make sure to get receipts every time! Just wanted to share our experience so other guests can be aware. read more
