If I could give half star ratings I would bump up this one to two and a half stars to be generous but since Yelp doesn't allow you to do that I'm inclined to round down since three stars would be too many for this place. I've never understood the cult like following that Trader Joes has. To me, it is just another grocery store with a slightly higher hipster cliental. Yeah, sure their prices are pretty good but then again half the stuff they have is Trader Joes brand food which isn't particularly good. I kind of think of it like the emperor's new clothes... everyone convinces themselves that it's amazing even when it's mediocre at best. That being said, there's nothing special about this Trader Joes in Davis. It's just like all the others. Same stuff, same prices. I did notice they tried to appeal to the proud Davis locals by painting all these murals of Davis "landmarks" on the walls. Too bad I'm not one of those life long Davisites who gets excited at stupid stuff like that. The employees are friendly. Almost too friendly, actually. I mean, greeting me and asking how my day is going is one thing. Checking my ID and then calling me by my name is another. There's a line between good customer service and being nosy. The only pluses I can really give for this place is for the two buck chuck and simpler times beer which I have to admit, is a freaking awesome deal. I'm not going to take any more stars off for negatives but the bottom line here is that Trader Joes is just not that good. I wouldn't tell anyone not to shop there but it's definitely not going to be the life altering experience that the hardcore TJs fans will tell you it is. read more

This is my favorite grocery store! The associates are always very helpful whenever my boyfriend or I have any questions about price changes or items that we can't seem to find anymore. Their organic apples are really tasty and a great price. They also carry Udi's gluten free bread, bagels, and hamburger buns, major bonus points in my book!! read more

I like Trader Joe's because it is simple. There are not so many options of anything so you can finish your shopping quickly and without being distracted. Not noisy, no special sales or any nonsense. I like how friendly the staff is and how they don't mind me bringing my own bags. At many other stores like Safeway and Walmart the cashiers seems irritated because it is outside of their routine but at Trader Joes that is not an issue. The lines are reasonable and the opening hours are fine. I like how a lot of their products are more healthy/natural than at an average grocery store. Not like at Whole foods but just looking at their yogurt options you will notice that they use a lot less chemicals in most of their foods. I also like how they usually have a sample so you can try new stuff. What I dislike about this particular location is the parking. It is not guaranteed that you will find parking on that lot, depending on when you shop. Or you may have to circle around for a while. I don't care for that but for the most part it is not as bad as the parking lot at Whole Foods in Davis. While I am fond of most Trader Joe's products I highly recommend that you stay clear of the milk. I had milk spoil before even reaching the best before date and without being opened. And that happened several times. A few times I found milk bottles with lids that leaked in the store. I found in the web that I am not the only one having issues with Trader Joe's milk. So just as long as you stay away from the milk you should be happy at Trader Joes. And yes, as a nother reviewer pointed out, this is not a one-stop only grocery store. You will not find all you ever need at Trader Joes but I am glad to have Trader Joes added to our shopping options in Davis. read more

Hands down best customer service I have experienced. I came in last week with my coconut oil smelling really funny. I talked to the manager and he was able to refund the coconut oil even after I had partially used it. All without a receipt. They are all very professional and friendly. read more

Overall, Trader Joe's is a good, local, grocery store that offers both organic and non-organic foods. Perhaps the most impressive aspects about Trader Joe's are their employees and the quality of their customer service. They are easy to talk to and approachable. The aisles are properly labelled and it's easy to find products that you need. Everything is tidy and in it's proper place. There is also free sampling, where you can get free samples of coffee and their item of the day (normally a convenient dinner to heat up at home, with a garnish). Another surprising thing about Trader Joe's is their frozen/easy food. Normally, frozen food or microwave food tends to be gross. However, it's surprisingly not bad for what's offered at Trader Joe's. The pricing for the products are pretty reasonable and in some cases better than what other markets such as Safeway has to offer. read more

I truly believe that when Trader Joe's opened in Davis, my college life became a lot less stressful. It's like my college years were divided between pre-Trader Joe's and post Trader Joe's (early senior year). It was like therapy going to Trader Joe's each week -- sometimes I would go before or after working out at ARC, at times I'd take the weekend Unitrans, or roommate and I would eat at Kathmandu and head to Trader Joe's then back home. The workers are so nice and the lines go by so fast. The place had everything I needed to cook, and also delicious frozen items that were convenient when in a rush. It started out as a treat to go here, but then became more of a habit and go-to place for all my groceries (Save-Mart was across the street from my apartment, and started feeling more and more depressing overall...) Now that I'm in New York, I continue to cling onto Trader Joe's -- people here actually consider Trader Joe's "cheap" compared to all the other grocery stores! But I miss the Davis location! (It's CRAZY how long the lines are in New York, and overall stressful.) read more

Trader Joes is cool. I respect that they have alot of organic options and even a gluten free shopping list if you ask. But since discovering the Davis Co-op, I haven't been back. The selection at Trader Joes is a bit small compared to Davis Co-op and the staff at the Co-op have always been super friendly to me. Planning on volunteering soon to get some discount. read more

Great customer service here, no matter what time of day! I would say busiest times of day at 4-7 and after that, almost all produce is gone. So do your grocery shopping earlier or you'll have to fight the long lines and picked over produce. But overall, a really good Trader Joe's. read more

Who doesn't love trader joes especially this location? Firstly, parking here is easy and I've never had to wait for a space as long as I was willing to walk a little further. The interior of this TJ has Davis and UCD all over it which is cute. The products are the same of all other trader joes which means great quality at a great price. When you come by make sure to go to the back since they usually have daily samples. Everyone here is nice and I love their cheese selection since it is reasonably priced and delicious. read more

Growing up, whenever my mom would say she bought the groceries from Trader Joe's I always thought we were eating like royalty! Everything seemed so fancy and had to be expensive, right? Little did I know that this is one of the cheaper grocery stores, and they have a wide variety of products and fresh produce, meats, and cheeses, that it's a favorite of mine to shop at if I need to make a medium-sized grocery run. They also have a great alcohol section. The only downside to shopping here is that it is a smaller store, so they dont carry everything you need, but they do have the basics. My go-to grocery hub! I love Trader Joe's to a somewhat unhealthy extent. It's conveniently located, biker-friendly, & I don't leave with a huge dent in my wallet. Due to my herbivore tendencies: I love picking up spinach and arugula here. I'd pass on the kale, I literally have picked up all my groceries here & then biked to Whole Foods to grab their baby kale variety there just because it's taste was just way more palatable to me. Veggie-wise: greeeeat variety, but just be careful when you pick from their selection... I've come across some sketchy/damaged/aging produce. I love that they have fun exciting things (or at least in my opinion) like multi-colored carrots and cute veggie trays. I liiiive for their hummus, but my personal fav is the tomato basil! I would definitely shell out the extra buck for the extra-fancy or premium strawberries vs the normal. Tip: pay attention to organic vs non-organic prices, sometimes there is very little difference -- it's just a dime or a nickel more! :) During midterms & finals or just during lazy times in my college experience, their prepped salads/wraps have saved my life. Also, the frozen Indian meals are a staple in my study-struggle diet (I live for the Paneer Tikka Masala w/Spinach Basmati Rice, I even got my roommate hooked!). The staff here are super nice & helpful 95% of the time (which is not something I can really say about Whole Foods... *side eye*). Once I was looking for silken firm tofu, which had been discontinued, and they checked to see if it was in stock and there was supposedly one left in the store and they looked for it FOREVER... but it never turned up. I was just super thankful they even spent the time relentlessly looking for the tiny thing! Few of my favorite and/or staple items here: liquid egg whites, stevia packets on the cheap cheap, greek yogurt (not the best taste, but I use them for baking/smoothies -- textual component usually so it works!), greens, all veggies (love their carrots & celery!), frozen Indian food, pineapple salsa... on the unhealthy side: Mac & Cheese balls, Smashing S'mores, Kona Truffles and... CRUNCHY COOKIE BUTTER (aka the spread of Gawdz.)... I wouldn't recommend: reduced guilt guac (meeeeehhhhh...), reduced guilt mac & cheese, or... cocoa/cookie butter swirl (just stick with the classic cookie buttah). read more

But i did buy a bag of frozen fried rice for $2.29, I was a bit skeptical at first but man was it fantastic! Finally a Trader Joe's in Davis after many years of talk. The employees here are friendly and the food is good. But I'm not a total Trader Joe's fan. My kids mainly like some of their quick frozen items such as the orange or teriyaki chicken. The rest of the items are alright. I still prefer Nugget for my main grocery shopping though. read more

This place is the best! Very friendly staff, it's like if one of them had a bad day, you wouldn't know because they are always happy. Debbie is nice because she gets to know people while she gives out FREE SAMPLES :D. She knows me by name and that I am moroccan, which is nice to know she tries to get to know the people. The free samples there always give me an idea what to get, even though I may not get it that same day, I definately get it the next day. The salads in the front are soo good! So happy that this finally opened. I live in the apartment complex across from the Trader Joe's and I stop by at least once a week here. I get most of my grocery shopping done here and I don't have to worry about the hassle of having to use the bus to get to the North Davis Safeway and then coming back afterwards. I can just walk across the street and get everything done at once. It is a bit crowded but for the food and location being so close to campus, I think it's really worth it. The prices aren't expensive at all and there's a lot of good frozen foods that a busy college student like myself can just pop into the microwave and eat. Trader Joe's used to be my favorite grocery shop chain for the last four years, but Davis' one brings me nothing but disappointment lately! In the past few months i had several foods from this TJ going bad well before the expiration date, including chicken meat, yogurts, peanuts and even limes! How easy is it to make a lime go bad? For Trader Joe's it seems a piece of cake-the limes i bought from them went moldy four days after the purchase, and i stored them in a dry and cool place! But today was the last drop-i'm never getting meat from them ever again! I got a package of organic chicken drums to cook for dinner. Remembering bitter experience of finding it spoiled after letting it sit in the fridge for a couple of days, this time i opened the package right away after i got from the store to cook it immediately. AND IT WAS SPOILED! i got a smelly sticky chicken drums from a store that claims to be all natural and pro-community! What's wrong with them? I'm so going to complain tomorrow! I really like trader's joe. It has great customer service, affordable prices, and lot of selection.

I never was much of a Trader Joe's person as an undergrad, but for some reason after you graduate you turn into a hipster. Almonds are very cheap here! $4/lb., vs. $7/lb. everywhere else. I think the milk is cheaper as well. Conveniently located, probably the best frozen meals around, and friendly workers. Nice, chill, TJ-esque feel to the store (pretty hand-written signs, no overwhelmingly bright colors, etc.). Four stars because of the high prices on many things (Some say it's worth the quality), and because when I bought the chips advertised by the free sample booth recently they were MUCH saltier than the samples being handed out. Trader Joe's is one of those places that when I shop I only carry a hand basket and when it gets so heavy that I cannot hold it anymore, I chack out. This saves me from filling a cart and going broke. I like the unusual selection that I cannot get at the big super markets. I buy a jar of their mango chutney every time I go in.
