Edgewood Orchard Galleries - The dragonfly coaster I got my old man

The art at Edgewood Orchard isn't just contained to the gallery. It spills out everywhere: in the…read moregarden, in the parking lot, in the restroom. This whole space is a work of art. This is one of the neatest Midwest galleries that I've visited, and it didn't hurt that on the day that I visited, they were offering free bloody Marys and hot chocolate. Of course, I partook of the hot chocolate (with a glug of Bailey's, because it was there). How nice to have a little drink while perusing all of the art everywhere. It makes the art pop that much more. Edgewood has artwork from more than 100 artists in a wide range of media: paintings, sculpture, glass, clay, wood, jewelry. I left with a coaster for my father that had a dragonfly on it (a special symbol to our family). There is artwork in every price range here, so you can leave with a little bit of Door County artwork no matter your budget.

The signage for this gallery is easy to spot right off of main Door County thoroughfare Highway 42…read moreat Peninsula Players Road.  There's also some big and catchy animal art sculptures and attractive grounds at the entrance.  I knew I'd probably drop in and putz around here one day, but upon actually visiting, I had no idea this was such a delightful place to walk their extensive and artsy grounds as well as enjoy their classy and elegant gallery.  We really enjoyed our stroll on their grounds on a very pleasant day and amongst numerous and priced outdoor art objects.  The two story gallery was very enjoyable browsing as well.  The staff was welcoming and friendly (and pet friendly too btw), and left us and numerous others to mill around leisurely.  They have 80 acres here, so there's plenty of space as well as parking.  As with most art, you don't know what you like til you see it.  Unfortunately, I knew I couldn't afford much of the stuff here, a lot of which runs into 5 figures, but we certainly enjoyed our time here.  I did refer my art-collecting son here though!  Their story (labelled Irene's story) is also a wonderful and heartwarming story of 4 generations of Wisconsin folk, and it's a delightful read.  I highly recommend visiting when one is up here in the cultural enclave that is Door County.

Alas, I just got to visit this place and take a little tour. Apparently, Lawrence University students can retreat here when they want, which is fortunate for them. This is a sanctuary where people can find quiet and contemplation. The general public can also sign up to take classes and seminars, and spend the weekend at Bjorklunden in what they call a "thought-provoking vacation." Located on the grounds of Bjorklunden is Boyton Chapel, a small wooden structure built in a late 12th-century Norwegian style. If you get a chance to peek inside, you should -- it's beautiful, with biblical paintings on every wall and hand-carved wooden pews. When I visited, it was snowing and everything looked white and beautiful. I imagine the area is equally as beautiful when everything is green, but there's something about being here when things are cold and sparkling that make it extra special.

Coming back to get married in this place that was special to both of us made our day that much better. The view and overall decor of the grounds and lodge was idyllic. We loved having complete access to the facility and our guests enjoyed having accomodations right at the site.

Don't come here if you're hopping from winery to winery (you will be sorely disappointed when faced with real wine). If you've never heard of vitis vinifera, this winery is NOT for you. It IS, however, for those who appreciate fine wines (as opposed to the alcoholic fruit beverages served at most Wisconsin wineries). Stone's Throw appears to be one of only three Wisconsin wineries producing truly fine wines (along with Blind Horse Winery in Kohler and Von Stiehl Winery in Algoma). Yes, the atmosphere is pretentious. But that pairs well with their fine Zinfandel. I was so impressed, I joined their wine club. Cheers! I will work on getting them to provide palate cleansing crackers and water with their tastings, but the lack thereof is a minor weakness.

Once we did eat it, we liked everything! Our main complaint was that we felt like the staff was annoyed that we were there. We came in with a reservation for 7 people and when we told the hostess they said "seven?" with a bit of a tone. We were met with several eye rolls throughout our experience, like when we asked for an extra plate, napkin, fork, and our bill (they did not bring enough for our whole party). There was nice live music being played and it's beautiful outside. There was a nail sticking out of the table and we mentioned it and they just said "okay" with no apology or solution which I also thought was odd. The stools were also pretty high up for the table, so we could not fit our legs underneath. I think our server was very stressed because it seemed to be fairly understaffed and I think that dipped into the level of service. Management or ownership definitely needs to find more staff or step in as servers, because it seemed like 3 servers were responsible for the entire place. I wouldn't be back, but I could guess the service would be better if they had more staff, which I know can be tricky toward the end of summer. It's a beautiful place in a great location, they just could use more staff so they are not so overwhelmed.
