I saw my little Rosie (Yorkshire Terrier) listed on Petfinder a couple weeks ago and I sent an email, then called to follow up. They asked some questions, I came in to meet her and talk with them... and just a few days later I was able to pick her up! She is beautiful, healthy and full of energy. I met Loree and Dr Schwartz while doing rescue with another group years ago. The more I come to know about them, the more impressed I am with them, and - believe me - I am not easy to impress. They rescue hundreds of animals every year, most from the brink of death. They work tirelessly with other rescue groups and shelters, often taking the toughest cases with the greatest care needs. They take hundreds of "disposable" beagles from the labs who breed and use them for animal testing. They are just incredible. When it was time for me to adopt another dog for own family, Loree and Monte were the obvious choice. I have never had a single regret from any interaction I've had with any individual from this group. Not one. My little yorkie loves her Auntie Loree and Uncle Monte, and I am so glad and grateful they are who they are. Just incredible, the work they do and the way they do it. I adopted my Yorkie-mix from this wonderful organization back in 2012 when they came to the adoption event at the Santa Clara Humane Society. Lorree and the team are outstanding at rescuing animals. I asked for her help in locating a new Shih Tzu companion after the loss of my best friend, Phoenix Arisen. Within a couple of weeks, she rescued 2 boys (brothers) and within 4 days, they were sent to her, chipped, clipped, given their shots, and off to their new homes. I think Jewel L was the other recipient. RAFFI has enhanced my life and broken hearts all over town. Lorree absolutely knows her clients both human and animal. For the reviewers giving this rescue a 1 star review and pulling the race card, you should be ashamed of yourselves. I am clearly NOT white. I am obviously Asian. At no point did I feel like I was being treated differently because of race. This is just a shameful complaint. Maybe she just didn't like the vibe she got from you. Loree was nothing but helpful and kind to me. It's clear that she cares about the homes her dogs are going into. This is not a place where they're willing to just pawn a dog off to anyone just because they want to get rid of a dog. The first dog I contacted Loree about did not work out because my household would not be a good fit for the particular dog. She was not rude about telling me why and I was not offended. These dogs deserve a forever home, and if you're not a good candidate for particular dog, it's not fair to hand that dog over to you if someone else would provide a better home. As for asking a lot of questions, such as what would happen if a couple adopting a dog together is to break up, that is a legitimate and fair question. Of course you don't want to think that you'll break up. I'm sure she's not saying you will. However, I've seen people get really nasty when it comes to custody of a pet post-breakup. Since the first dog I inquired about did not fit my household, Loree worked with me to find me a dog that would be right for me. I originally inquired about a Maltese but I ended up with a yorkie. Unfortunately, the yorkie ended up not getting along with my dog in my home, so I had to take her back. I felt so awful about it but I had to do what was best for both dogs. Loree didn't make me feel bad about having to bring her back and she was very understanding. I miss my yorkie but I feel good knowing that she's in good care and she'll be placed in a home more suited to her needs. We adopted Mai Tai a 14 yr old golden Shih Tzu from Loree! He's amazing, wonderful, sweet, healthy & ours! We got him to a cardiologist & eye specialist (due to his age) & found he's relatively healthy, just a little blind & mostly deaf... just like my husband (ha ha!!). We adopted Maddie-beautiful Maltese mix (initially known as Goldie) from Loree about 2 months ago and she has been the best addition to our family. Maddie at 1.5 years old, is healthy, came house broken and walks well on the leash. She is also great with children and other dogs. These things may sound obvious, but difficult to come by in smaller dogs and the traits are near impossible in adoptable dogs. Loree was very helpful in matching us with the right dog. I have the furry love of my life, because of this organization, and one of their foster Mama's Divya. I can't tell you how patient, wise, helpful, and dog smart, this lady was/is. I hadn't had a dog as an adult (I was 52 at the time) though my husband had. God knows I needed a dog (I wasn't sure) , and that this was the place to find him. I needed a dog who'd had some fostering, so I could learn a little of his temperament from his foster mom, vs just standing outside of cages at the pound. God bless Divya, she didn't run the other way at my new dog owner trepidation, maybe she saw that we'd be okay. I know our house was just what our little guy needed, one where folk would be home most of the time. I give much credit to founders/heads of this group, Loree and Dr. Schwartz (If I'm correct) who obviously have a knack at picking dogs who will make good companions. They took good care of our little guy to get him ready for a home. What I've heard of their policies is excellent. They take great care to do best by the dogs. I had a wonderful experience here adopting my dog, Charlie (formerly Barnaby). I spoke with his foster mom before going to meet him in person and take him home. We were allowed plenty of time together to ensure we would be a great pair. The adoption fee included a harness, collar, leash, microchipping, neutering, health records, as well as helpful pamphlets and coupons. This rescue is connected with Boulevard Pet Hospital so you know the animals are well cared for. I took Charlie in for a check up and he was so excited to see everyone on the staff! I adopted Teddy aka Bugsy in September 2012 from Loree. He was a one year old, Lhasa mix. I saw Teddy's pic posted at Toy Breed Rescue website, and felt in love with him. I called Loree immediately to get more information about Teddy. When Loree called back and interviewed on the phone, she asked me lots of questions and tried to find out if I am a responsible owner. At that moment, I felt so disappointed because I was screening by her and had to answer all the questions that she was asking. My hope was going down to zero, as I thought she will reject me. Then, she wanted me to call back at 3:00P.M on the same day to chat further. When I called her again, she did not answer the phone. So I had to leave her a message. Finally Loree called. She scheduled to meet with me on Saturday morning at Martinez humane Society, parking lot area. When she arrived, she did not ask me any more questions, she just handed the dog and wanted me to take a walk around the parking lot with Teddy. After the walk, I brought Teddy home, and adopted him. That's simple. After I adopted Teddy, I realized Teddy is eating really, really fast. I emailed Loree asking for advice. She wrote back immediately and instructed me to purchase a special bowl for Teddy. The special bowl will help Teddy to slow down. I kept contacting Loree for help about Teddy; I realize Loree is very knowledgeable about dogs, and willing to offer her help at any time and guide me what to do. She followed up with me about Teddy's improvement. Now, Teddy with me is almost 8 months, he is so cute and adorable. He does not have any negative behaviors issue at all, except a fast eater. However, his eating habit is slow down a lot. The special bowl is working well for him as making him eating slowly. I am glad that I adopted Terry from Loree, a caring foster home. My husband and I were at the Milpitas Humane Society on Saturday and met Loree who had a beautiful 4 year old Shih Tzu named Manny . It was love first sight. We brought our pitbull/shepherd back for a meet and greet with him and that sealed the deal . We brought him home that day to his forever family. We renamed him Murphy . And he has brightened our lives in such a short few days. He is a very mild mannered well behaved little man . Loree was very informative . You could tell she wanted to make sure that this little guy was a perfect fit . He is adored and it feels like he's always been with us . I recently had to make the very difficult decision of giving up my sweet Yorkie for adoption. I spent a lot of time & effort searching for the best rescue organization in the San Jose area. I found Loree's name mentioned through a number of websites and was even referred to her from a woman across the country! After reading the Yelp reviews, it was obvious to me that Loree doesn't just hand over animals to anyone. She is meticulous in her selection of new owners, & rightfully so. There is no point in placing a dog with the wrong person. The people who had negative comments about their experience with Loree obviously didn't match well with the dogs they were interested in & did not respect her professional opinion. Once i made my choice to go with Toy Breed Rescue, I sent Loree an email and she quickly responded. She answered all of my questions & asked me detailed questions about my dog. She was very sensitive to my feelings and never pushed me about my decision. I knew at this point that I had found the right rescue for my dog. We set up an appointment for the surrender that was mutually convenient. Since Loree works with Boulevard Pet Hospital, I was able to meet her there. I was immediately greeted with warm smiles from the staff. I was a bit earlier than expected, and Loree was on a conference call where she volunteers as a board member for a national pet rescue organization. This is another reason I felt I could fully trust that my precious dog would be in excellent hands. We adopted a little dog from them and I have to say that they are so awesome. So awesome that they open up their homes and their wallets to temporarily house these pups and to get them back on their feet. These folks bear the costs of the dental work, medical and rehabilitation bills which is not cheap. The stories and scars are evident on these animals. This is our first rescue and I wish I had met these folks sooner. To reviewers who posted bad reviews because they wouldnt let you hold a pup. You are acting like spoiled little brats. To use the race card is indeed shameful because I can tell you these guys are so wonderful (and I'm Asian). The foster mum, Linea was not only the sweetest person but so very loving to the dogs. She even offered to drive the dog to us all the way up to SF. She was informative and very responsive to our concerns. I wouldn't even give these people a star. I went to the humane society to adopt a dog today and saw this really cute puppy from this toy breed rescue. My sister and I want to hold the puppy to get the feel if it. Loree rudely told us that only "potential" adopters are allowed to hold it. Wtf?!!! I guess we have all the free time in the world and want to come hang out at the pound on a Saturday? What the heck is this women trying to say? She thought we we just some kids and told us that our mother has to be there to be a part of the decision making. Woo, I am a grown woman and don't need my mother's permission for anything. We were interrogated like we're criminals by Loree. I thought it would be nice to take in a dog who needs a home but after being treated like this I rather go buy one. Screw these people! read more

I've tried getting a hold of Toy Breed Rescue in regards to a Lhasa Apso they placed an ad for on petfinder.com for almost three weeks. Turns out the dog was also listed under another rescue site as well. When I finally got a response from them via email and I called back the number they gave me, the woman who emailed me wasn't even there. I left my fiance's number to call back, and a few hours later we got a phone call. Not only are the fees outrageous (a good $130 more than other rescues we were looking at) but the woman outright refused to meet with us to discuss the dog because she decided the dog would not like us. Why? Because even though we live 100 yards from a park that is dog friendly and trafficked by plenty of new dogs to meet, have someone home every single day of the week to keep the dog company, and have clearly been expressing interest in meeting this dog for quite some time right now, it's inconsequential because we don't own our own home, rather, we live in an apartment and because our most recent dog died of old age, we don't currently have any more in-home dogs for this one to socialize with. All this because the dog is currently in a foster home with other dogs. I've had two Lhasa Apsos before, neither of them cared to go outside unless they had company or needed to use the restroom, and most of the time they used a pee pad for that. Neither did they particularly care if there was another dog around them so long as there was always a person present to give them attention, which is why I was looking to adopt another Lhasa Apso to begin with. Save your money and rescue a poor little chihuahua or other small dog from other shelters who will be grateful for your interest and not turn you away without even meeting you. Clearly Toy Breed Rescue thinks their temporary facilities are better than a permanent and loving home with owners who are experienced with a specific breed. I would like to reiterate the point: she REFUSED TO MEET WITH US which meant not that "oh this dog isn't right for you" which I could understand to an extent, but that it was "we won't even bother helping you find a dog that IS right for you" read more

We recently adopted a pure bred Lhaso Apso from Toy Breed Rescue and had a greate experience. After we got her home we discovered that she had a cold. We called Loree, she said bring her in, we did, the vet looked our dog over, gave a prescription and we were out of there. No Charge! Two weeks later Loree called to see how our pup was doing! I adopted my dog Buddy, a beautiful Maltese 6 years ago from Toy Breed rescue. He passed away at the age of 11 1/2 recently and all I can say is that having him was the best experience of my life. He brought joy every day. I give a lot of credit to people who do this kind of work for unwanted animals. So if they had a bad day, or didn't treat you with the respect you believe you deserve, chalk it up to a bad day, and understand that it's a labor of love and not a money making operation. We adopted an adorable little Italian Greyhound from here and love her to death. She had two broken legs that they fixed up, we fostered her during recuperation, and then we adopted her. I'll be honest with you. We are looking to adopt a dog and when i talked with Linea I was very very disappointed. I did find her very offensive, getting overly personal and quite rude. Now, it could be because she identifies very strongly with these helpless creatures. And that is commendable. But sometimes in their zeal to work for one being (dogs), people can overlook the feelings of other beings (humans). I would not have minded if she had asked these very personal questions in a kinder tone. But her attitude and tone were extremely judgmental. She is not helping the cause she is working for by turning away potential homes for the very animals she wants to help. Oh, and after talking to her, I still went in person to the adoption event. Am sad to report that her body language, tone, and manner of speaking were in keeping with what I had experienced on the phone. (I wonder, if someone is so kind at heart to work so hard for these helpless animals, how come the kindness does not come across in their outwardly behavior to other human beings.) read more

I was under the impression that foster homes had to be strict and have lots of home visits; nope just had to make him a part of our family. My best buddy, Jeffrey, a Lhasa Apso, passed away at the ripe old age of 13. Losing him was extremely hard for me and I couldn't bear the thought of getting another pet. Grieving his loss took a while and when I finally made the decision to find another best buddy, I took my time, searching shelters and rescues; checking the internet daily. I knew in my heart I would know when I found the right pet. One day, I stumbled across Toy Breed Rescue in San Jose and my heart jumped! I thought I had checked most of the rescues in the area and couldn't understand how I missed this one, but nonetheless, there he was....a Havanese puppy named Brody. He made my heart melt and I knew he was the one. I emailed Loree (hoping he was still available for adoption). Loree emailed back and told me that he was and she forwarded my email to his foster mom. His foster mom contacted me right away and invited me to come and see him. Brody, is a special needs puppy abandoned at the vet clinic when his owner couldn't afford his medical care. You see, Brody was diagnosed with an ulcer on his left eye and suffers from dry eye in both eyes. The vet contacted the rescue which took care of his medical needs. He needs eye medication 4x/day. It's too early to tell if he'll need the drops for the reminder of his life. His foster mom did an extraordinary job, administering his eye meds every 3 hours round the clock. Brody is a happy, loving boy and I adore him very much. Notwithstanding that this rescue is well organized and has the greatest fosters. They are sad when they leave, but know they will be okay as they travel to their new home. Brody is now living at my house with all his puppy energy. He's about 20 weeks old and I couldn't be happier. Havanese breed loves to shred paper (go figure), so I have my very own live paper shredder! read more

My wife and I adopted our two shih tzus from Loree and we had a great experience with her. We are both Asian so it is curious as to why people are accusing this organization for not accepting non-whites. My wife and I were very clear as to the type of dogs we wanted and our requirements. At that time, we did not have children, but we were very clear to Loree that we wanted dogs that would be ok around children. She was very careful to only show us the dogs that she knew had a history of living around children. After our daughter was born one of the two guys became her best friend and the other guy could really care less about her. Loree is very protective of the dogs and many of them have been to multiple homes and shelters so she is looking to end the cycle of abandonment. She did ask us questions about our history around dogs and if we've raised shih tzus. My wife grew up with a shih tzu and we made it clear to Loree that we understood the requirements to raise and own a shih tzu (dietary needs, grooming, etc). read more

Big thanks to Loree for helping me out on very short notice with a sweet little dog! I was working in a pet store when someone came in one evening...handed me a little Yorkie, and bolted out of the store!! I fed him, snuggled him, fell in love, and came to the difficult realization that with six pets and an unemployed husband at home already I was not in a good position to take him home with me. I called Toy Breed Rescue and asked for suggestions. Much to my relief and joy, they made space to take him into foster care! I do a lot of foster work with cats and I know how hard it can be to squeeze in an unexpected animal with little/no notice. Loree did me and the little Yorkie a huge kindness at great inconvenience to herself, and I will always appreciate it!
