I would love to know why guys making sandwiches in delis don't write orders down, when there's a bunch of information to remember -- enough that I know I'd need to write it down. It's a neat trick when they pull it off (remembering the 9 different ingredients I just told you), but pretty annoying when they don't, and could easily be solved -- if writing it down isn't feasible, just ask me to repeat it! I went into this deli recently to get a sandwich: honey turkey on a roll, lettuce tomato, little bit of red onion, banana peppers, and honey mustard. When I went to eat the sandwich, that was all there ... plus mayo, which I didn't ask for (and which I strongly dislike). Ok fine, maybe that's one of those things where it's just considered standard and if you don't specify that you don't want it, some deli guys will assume it should be part of the sandwich. I don't like it, but I'm willing to accept that. So tonight I went in there, ordered the same sandwich but when I got up to that part I said "and honey mustard. No mayo. Just honey mustard." He was looking at me. No other customers, no other orders to juggle, I was the only person in there. While he was making the sandwich I thought to reiterate that part, but i didn't feel like getting a "you saying I don't know how to do my job?" look that I've gotten in other delis before. And I thought, yeah he must know what he's doing. And then I get to where I'm going and bite into the sandwich, and it's just mayo (I mean, the turkey and lettuce etc were there -- but no honey mustard, just mayo). The thing I'd specifically asked not to have instead of the thing I asked to have. The guys are nice, the sandwich was otherwise fine, it's a decent (if pricey) deli. And I'm venting a frustration here that I have with deli guys in general rather than just this one in particular. But for real, why can't you write it down or ask me for a reminder? I really don't get it at all. read more
