Organized co-ed adult league kickball is very, very popular right now (and has been the past four…read moreor five years) in the young adult communities in many cities as both a social scene and also as a new recreational activity. WAKA (World Adult Kickball Association) seems to be the most popular kickball league in Atlanta, though it's getting some stiff competition lately from Go Kickball. WAKA games are played at Hammond Park near Perimeter Mall (In the Sandy Springs / Dunwoody area) and at Piedmont Park in Midtown. Occasionally other league game play locations become an additional option (Candler Park, Coan Park, or Marcus Center). Park play venues and days of the week that games are played are denoted by Divisions (Thrasher, Lightning, Liberty etc) You can register as an individual (free agent) and they will place you on a team. You can also sign up with 15 or so friends and create your own team. Fees vary, but generally run between 65 to 75 dollars for an eight week season. For your money, in addition to organized game play, you get a tee shirt and 2-3 season parties (typically at the league bar). The fee finances 2 or three parties at the league bar (where all the teams gather for after-game socializing, drinking and eating). League members also get discounts at the league bar on certain beverages and food items (but you often have to ask your server or bartender). Said discounts are only good on game day (rain or shine) even if games get canceled due to bad weather conditions. There are similarities and differences when comparing WAKA with Go Kickball. Both organizations have the "Kickball Culture" thing going which I will attempt to describe. Both are dominated by young professional types, mostly single, in their mid twenties to early thirties. You will find a small percentage are folks just out of college and, even fewer, some folks in their mid to late thirties; however, they make up an even smaller percentage. Many married / engaged / otherwise involved couples will also play on teams with or without their single comrades. Some describe the culture as akin to people re-living their frat / sorority days. The culture is also similar to the Hash Hound Harriers in that imbibing (before, during and after game play) is prevalent. Also similar to HHH , team names often have sexual innuendo in them (Multiple Scorgasms, Big Red Balls, My Couch Pulls Out But I Don't, ..Etc). There seems to be a fair amount of hooking up or coupling going on (among the singles who play kickball mainly to meet significant others) but with the numbers game of 60% guys and 40% women, the women have the clear advantage in that area. The most attractive and aggressive men generally have the advantage in beating the odds. WAKA generally has better parties but is more clique heavy / insular; whereas, Go Kickball generally (but not necessarily) has better, or more lively, after game socializing at the league bar. Go Kickball perhaps has more play venue / park choice options with leagues at Piedmont Park (Midtown), Central City Park (Downtown) , Cobb Park (Smyrna), Lynwood Park (Brookhaven) and ?Park (Kennesaw). If you are new to Atlanta (or any city where kickball is offered through one of the two organizations) Kickball is great way to meet new friends. Since most people have not played the game since grade school / middle school, everyone is starting out on a relatively level playing field. Soccer players definitely have an advantage from an offensive weapon standpoint.

I wouldn't bother signing up as a free agent without knowing members of the team/the captain pretty well. Some of the captains they rely on are as rude, dishonest, and incompetent as the league officials. The league will tell you they can move you to a new team if you don't get along or are mistreated by the team you're assigned to, then they will wait too long or end up not bothering/lie and tell you it's too late as apparently this league is too serious. Even if there are games remaining in the regular season. If you like having rainout games not being made up and credits not being offered as stated in the terms and conditions then go ahead and sign up. If you like being told specific rules have been disregarded because of apparent captain votes the league didn't announce go ahead. If you want to be assigned to a field you didn't sign up for with no explanation or apology, then be scheduled to play starting as late as 10pm go ahead. This is a ripoff and inconsiderate. I have been polite and am being treated like crap. Don't bother discussing refunds in any circumstances. They probably wouldn't give one even if they cancelled the season. If the league disbanded they would probably try to give you leftover shirts as a comp instead of your money back. Update: Hi Ian, Thank you for your continued engagement with our league and for sharing your concerns. I appreciate the opportunity to address this matter comprehensively. After thorough consultations with both team captains and our support team, alongside a review of our correspondences, it's clear that substantial efforts were made to accommodate your requests. The decision to initially offer a team switch was made in good faith, aiming to enhance your experience within our league--a gesture beyond our typical protocol. However, the nature of your recent requests--particularly the timing and frequency of desired changes--poses significant challenges. Introducing a new player into a team's established dynamics towards the end of the season disrupts not only their strategic setups but also their camaraderie and collective rhythm. Such changes can be detrimental to the overall team environment and the league's integrity. Given these considerations, and with respect for all participants, it is not feasible to proceed with a team change at this stage. Our policies and the structure of the season do not support such a move this late in the game without risking the detriment of all involved. Furthermore, as per our terms and conditions, the circumstances described do not qualify for a credit issuance. While I understand this may be disappointing, please know that the decision is rooted in maintaining fairness and consistency across our league. I must emphasize that this decision is final, and as such, we will not be able to entertain further discussions on this matter. Your understanding and acknowledgment of the efforts made on your behalf would be appreciated. Thank you for your participation this season, and while I regret that we may not meet your expectations in this instance, I sincerely hope you find a league that aligns more closely with your preferences. There should be rules about playing time. Everyone in good standing on a team should be playing a minimum number of innings in every game especially since the fields are a 45-60 minute drive from downtown Atlanta. Want to pay $200 to join and buy uniforms etc and not be guaranteed any playing time? Then this is your league. The coaches have complete control over rosters - who plays and when. Most are in it for fun but some focus only on winning and getting to the Softball World Series. Also, odd to me that some of these teams pad their rosters with lots of heterosexual players who take spots from LGBT players. I'm fine with heterosexuals but why? I thought HSL was started to create a safe place for LGBT players where fun and friends were the primary goals. Lots of other hetro softball leagues out there. All that being said, there are lots of people who are playing and having fun. Just pick the right team and coach and know what you are getting into and hopefully join with a friend. PS - Don't shell out a bunch of money for uniforms until you are sure you are staying on the team.
