Since our old wood-sided 2-story bungalow style Santa Barbara house (built in 1911) is a secondary rental home and not our primary residence in the Coachella Valley, we were doing much of the planning of the 4-color scheme and communication long distance, making it more challenging. Justin answered all our many questions and provided helpful information and suggestions throughout the process and could not have been more accommodating. Both Justin and Martin (the co-owners of Fresh Coat) and their crew could not have been more professional and thorough. They were excellent communicators and answered all of our questions. They also brought up areas of concern with the old house and reassured us that the final result would be satisfactory. Since we were making a major color scheme change, we were anxious about how the final result would be. Not only were we happy to see the finished product, we even got positive reviews from the neighbors about the new look and the courtesy and professionalism of the crew. One of them was the godawful faux wood paneling from the 1970s. It was all over the home with the exception of the bathrooms and kitchen, which had equally horrendous flowered wallpaper. Dina and Christina came highly recommended so we brought them out for a look and an estimate. Dina carefully walked around while I described what I wanted done. I mentioned that I had been doing research on colors and wanted a neutral white, preferably neither warm nor cool (and not hospital white) because we have windows on all sides of the home and it would get light at various times of the day and at various angles. I wondered what she thought of Benjamin Moore's Chantilly Lace. She said BM was a great paint, and she loved that color, that she had just finished a home done in that color. She also said it would work well here, providing the neutral and definite white I wanted. She and her partner plus their employee came out every day and because we hadn't moved in (and the carpeting had been taken up to prepare for the wood flooring) were able to easily remove the kitchen cabinets and work with them. All their tasks were neatly handled, things carefully placed and the workplace cleaned up each night. There was never a sense of chaos or of a mess. (All renovation work should look this good while in progress. Still, I am glad I wasn't living there.) The first step was to have all the walls skim coated to remove the lines that simply painting over the paneling would show. They recommended someone they had worked with before and he did a fabulous job, skim coating the walls twice. Then they primed it and painted it. If you didn't know it, you would never be able to tell that there was paneling under the walls. They used matte, semi-gloss and gloss in the appropriate places. They were fast; within two weeks they were done. I am beyond happy as their price was very reasonable, they were always willing to answer questions, they wanted us to be happy with it, and they were neat, clean, never noisy, and showed up on time every single day. We are hiring them again to paint the exterior within a few months (and as soon as money allows). In the meantime, they also painted a reproduction piece of furniture I had that had been kind of gold and yellow, and it is now a glossy white that looks absolutely gorgeous in the living room.

In the beginning Emiliano was great to work with, but as time went on, his prices kept increasing along with his excuses of why the work was not top quality. There were several discrepancies with color when staining, prep, and overall quality of work. We began to scale back the job as it was obvious they were very inconsistent. He also tends to forget his promise and guarantee on his work. The picture here is from a very expensive deck refinishing job, days after completion the sun began to fade it again. He assured that it would be taken care of, when it came time to addressing it, he wants to charge the entire fee again. Search for more reputable larger paintings firms in the valley that are not interested in overcharging for a mediocre job, and who will actually stand behind their work.
