How can you have the word "Café" in your name and not serve any type of café food. We stopped in after coming from Bishop to watch our daughter compete in a sporting event. When we walked in there was a large party (15-20 people) in the other room. No sign to tell us to wait to be seated or to seat ourselves, we walked a bit further and a waitress said 2 people and sat us at a table that looked like they had been using to roll silverware into napkins, (loose utensils all over), never removed them, we ordered a water and a soda, and she gave us menus and immediately asked you ready, I told her we needed a few minutes as we had never been there before. We looked at the menu and there was high end in my opinion too expensive food on the menu, I actually had to close the menu and read the name again as the closest thing to a burger was a ground hamburger patty topped with onions and gravy. Now do not get me wrong I like most types of food but was really looking for a good Café/dinner style burger, indepentdant places usually have the best. I relooked at the menu and nothing looked like what I really was in the mood for. I got up went to use the bathroom and walked thought use to be a gift store, had a few items I am assuming were still for sale in a corner of the room, but old sales fixtures hanging from the walls, were all there, it was like they were unsure of what to do with the room, so they just forgot about it. A handwritten sign on the woman's bathroom (I hate handwritten signs, they appear unprofessional) said it was out of order, they men's restroom could of used a little attention. Went back to my table sat down, we decided to share an appetizer, a total of 15 minutes went by and no one came back to use, so I put 3 dollars on the table for the soda, and we left and went somewhere else. When we got up a different waitress was walking by and said hello, and I told her that the money on the table was for the soda, she didn't ask why we were leaving, really didn't seem to care. Now my daughter has sporting event all through California, this one was 4 hours from home and we make it a point to stop at indepentdent restaurants, as we can eat at chain places anywhere. This looked like a causal dining place it had outdoor seating, & gift shop. the prices were high, but everything in town seemed to be that way so we went for it. My husband, who will eat anything didn't finish his meal. The kids hated the fish & Cheese burger the only thing they would eat were the fries. I got the pork chops which were over cooked, I could barely cut them, bland rice and over cooked limp vegetables. The dinners barely filled the plates. If you are going to over charge me it better be good or filling, this was neither. Fast food would have been better tasting. read more

Long overdue five stars to Totem Cafe! It was by far the best dinner place we found over several days in Lone Pine last October. I think we had five dinners there. We had tried the "fine dining" establishment in town and were really looking for something else; Totem Cafe looked very welcoming, so we gave it a try. What we loved about it: super-friendly people, fantastic food, and an all-around comfortable and relaxing dining experience. I ordered the steak and fettuccine dish on the first night and never looked back. It is absolutely delicious, especially on a chilly evening. Also tried the spaghetti and meatballs, equally excellent. Loved the Totem Cafe and hope we can return! read more

Ambiance OK. Hamburger was good but not stellar, came with lots of onion, tomato, pickles. Fries were seasoned nicely and good. Turkey on sandwich was good but bread was dried out. Moderate prices, maybe slightly high for what you get. read more

Casual restaurant with great service and good food. We had the Rib Eye and Pasta Primavera dinners. Delicious.

STAY AWAY from this place if at all possible. We went there on a Saturday night and had an absolutely terrible meal. The chicken dish must have been a few days old and reheated in the microwave. It was tough and dry. The "taco salads" had no refried beans and no ground beef (as they put on their menu) but rather a couple tablespoons of cheap canned chili with some old lettuce and tomato thrown on top. I can recommend this place only if you only want to sit outside on a beautiful Lone Pine summer evening, maybe just for drinks.. The only nice thing was being able to sit outside and our waitress was great. P.S. I also got an upset stomach the following day :( Really, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else if you are hungry. read more

We had breakfast. It was not terrible, but the food was at best mediocre, and the service was slow despite there being only a few other people in the place. The prices are in line with other non-fast-food places in town that serve breakfast. You can get better food and service for the same price at several of those. read more

saw this place on 395 on our way up to mammoth and pulled over because it seemed cute. it was a little creepy how they have it set up. there's a store with some odds and ends in the back of the restaurant and it seemed a bit strange. food was ok, nothing too exciting. wouldn't hurry back on our next road trip. read more

The night before climbing Mt Whitney we decided to try this joint as it was right across the Whitney Portal Hostel where we were staying overnight. At first glance it looked like a classy place relative to other places in the neighborhood and we wanted a big carb/protein boost the night before the hike. Hence decided to give it a try. I would have given this restaurant a 3 star even if it meets the expectation in any category - seating, service, ordering or price/quality/presentation of food. Unfortunately this place failed my expectations or did not even come close to my expectations in any one of these categories - you can guess from the fact that towards the end I was thinking we did I not just go to McDonalds next door and grabbed a Fish O Fillet meal. The staff was extremely non cooperative and non friendly. After waiting for a few minutes at the counter we just decided to seat ourselves. The waiter showed up and threw some menus around the table and went away, came back after 10+ minutes and started taking orders mechanically, I ordered pasta primavera, nothing fancy like steak or seafood and still it took 35 minutes to serve the dish. On a scale of 10 the dish was a 6 given where it was priced. Rest of the group with me ordered mahi mahi steak and were utterly disappointed as the fish was without any seasoning or sauce at all. Some folks came after us and were getting constant attention from the staff and their food was also served earlier than us - looks like this place has a preference to regulars and are not very much interested in entertaining the tourists. Noone came to give us the check - we had to go to the counter and constantly ping the lady there to close our check. She also charged us 18% gratuity as we were a part of 6 - if I had the option I would given no tip at all. But that's a rule so cannot complain. There was a diner right opposite to this place - I never got a chance to give it a try but if I have to suggest someone I would say please go ahead and try the diner - it won't be worse than the Totem Cafe experience or at least you will not feel ripped off. read more

We have been going to Lone Pine for several years and this is our go to place for breakfast. The pancakes are really good as well as the omelets. Had lunch here only a couple of times and had the bacon burger, which you can order for dinner also. It is really good. The best thing that like is the outdoor patio on a nice day. Just kick back and watch the show on 395. Should be 3 1/2 stars, not bad for a small town place. read more

My wife and I stopped in here after a trip to Manzanar and Death Valley this last weekend. We ordered the Rib Eye Steak Sandwiches with fries and onion rings. Both were cooked to perfection (mine rare and my wife's medium rare). Both the fries and onion rings were fresh, hot, and crisp. The prices were reasonable also. My husband and I were kind of skeptic because last reviews and only 3 stars, it really was exellent, cold beer on frozen mug to start I had an avocado burger and my husband a chicken Ortega sandwich they were both delicious and the fries were golden and yummy and by the way our dog was very pleased with her chicken breast we got for her and also place was very clean and great service. We stopped on the way back from skiing at Mammoth Mountain. It was something about the café from the outside that looks very charming and appealing. I'm so happy that we decided to stop there for our sustenance and nourishment. I ordered the grilled chicken breast sandwich and it was absolutely delicious. The chicken breast was seasoned and cooked to perfection. My travel companion just went with the grilled cheese and french fries but what a grilled cheese sandwich it was!!!! Overflowing with melted cheese and the bread was browned to perfection. The french fries were crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. The food was incredible the service was exceptional our waitress was so attentive and prompt with everything. The only downside was that I left my credit card behind in the credit card portfolio and didn't realize it was gone until I got back to Los Angeles. But here's where things get really interesting, I called the restaurant and I spoke to the owner and he offered to go to the post office and mail it back to me! Now I have a duplicate credit card so I simply asked him if he wouldn't mind cutting it up taking a picture of the cut up credit card and then texting it to me just so I knew it was done. I have to tell you he actually did that for me :-) what a great thing to do so now I don't have to bother canceling my credit card and going through all that hassle. I'm so grateful. And because it was such a beautiful café in a quaint little town to me it felt very trustworthy... I feel hundred percent confident. This gets my highest recommendation for the best service, the best food within 100 miles, and people you can trust!!!!! read more

We were in town for several days and dinner here was the best value meal in town, hands down. Salmon and halibut entrees were very good, spaghetti with meat sauce was tasty, and so were the pork chops. Our server was friendly and attentive. This is the first place in town I'd go back to for another meal. They offer some interesting craft beers and wine as well. read more

I had a rib-eye steak, mashed potatoes, and a salad for dinner at the Totem Cafe. I forget what my friend ordered. The food that I ate was underwhelming. The rib-eye didn't taste like it was seasoned, and it seemed like a cheaper choice rib-eye that is tenderized with papain, like you'd get for $8.99 at a Sizzler. Even though it was medium rare, as I'd ordered it, it was still dry and as chewy as an old shoe. Strange. Were the mashed potatoes instant or left over? Was the gravy canned? I love diner food if it's good, but the prices here do not reflect the poor food quality. Dinner for two was around $60. That's two entrees (served with iceberg salads), one dessert, and a beer. The atmosphere likewise left something to be desired, as our table was next to a big empty room that made it feel like we were eating in a warehouse. This was the only place that was still open by the time we got to Lone Pine on a Friday night at 9pm. The service was almost adequate, but in fairness, I think she was frazzled because she was the only waitress on the floor and several tables came in at one time. There was absolutely nothing memorable about the Totem Cafe apart from my exit. read more
