I would never walk into this shop as it is old and not fancy at all. but...with the consistent 5 star reviews on Yelp I ventured in...a snowbird hoping to get a decent cut and color that would not totally destroy my hair. I have never seen anyone cut like Tina cuts hair. I was curious...same with her hair color. She mixed solution in a way I have not seen...but exactly how I cook. The results were stunning. Took my wife, Marta to Total Image Salon for a hair cut for her 50th reunion to take place in less than five weeks. We got there and talked to Courtney. My wife showed with her hands the length at her shoulders that she wanted. Let Courtney know that she had pictures of a similar cut that she wanted but with modification in length to be longer than the picture. I thought she was having trouble finding the pictures so I showed one on my phone. At that point I think she stopped listening to my wife. Shortly after she started cutting a friend showed up at the salon. Courtney spent the time cutting way and talking to her friend. She did a quick blunt cut and made my wife's hair the shortest it has ever been. She had to shave her neck and which had never happened before. My wife is now horrified. After she was done Courtney and her friend team-up together to try to convince that my wife had agreed to this cut, that Courtney had cut her hair like the picture. That was not the cut my wife wanted. We went to immediately place a review on Yelp because it was the Yelp rating that lead to her trying this Salon. After that because the cut was actually causing her hair ends to dig into the back of her neck and causing physical discomfort we went to two other hair salons to get something done. At Reggis a very nice lady was able to get the thickness out of the underside of the hair without losing any more length. Nothing can be done with the side cut. Now she does not want to go out in Public and I have had to cover the mirrors in the house. Do not know if we will get to the reunion which is already paid for. read more

After not having a haircut for quite a while and not knowing where to even start with finding a good stylist in Gainesville, I turned to Yelp and quickly discovered Total Image Salon. The five star overall rating really stuck out at me- so I decided to book an appointment. As it turns out, the other reviews are right on point. I'm here to tell you that Tina deserves all five stars. She is such a nice lady and a very talented hairdresser. I was nervous to let someone new touch my hair because it is long and it has been butchered many times before, but as she was cutting my hair, she explained everything she was doing and why. She has over 30 years of experience and she really knows what she's doing. Her prices are extremely reasonable. I saw Tina yesterday for a cut and highlight and I'm very pleased! First off, I work in Ocala and it's nearly impossible to leave work in time to make it to any appointment, much less be done before they close. Tina was able to do my hair after normal hours at 6pm which was great because it meant I didn't have to go another week with awful looking hair. She was spent a lot of time listening to what I wanted and explained everything she was doing from beginning to end. We ended up doing highlights and low lights. My curly hair has so much more demention now and I don't have to worry about what it's going to look like in a few weeks when my hair starts growing out. Go see Tina, you won't regret it. read more

I went in for a simple cut and layering, with no wash as I was going to the gym right after. They told me they would not change their price - it would be the same with or without the wash. That was fine... I heard good things about this place so I went ahead. I explained that I wanted about 1.5inches off and layers. After the hairdresser cut my hair (can't remember the name!), she asked me how it looked. I said it was great and I'd like the layers cut in as it was very blunt, and she said "I think it looks better blunt." And that was it!!!! End of appointment. No layers. $35. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this salon and Kara as well. I have been driving to Orlando regularly to have my hair done, because its such a personal thing to change stylist. Due to personal situations, I had to make the decision to get this done here and I'm so glad I choose Total Image Salon. I have lived in several cities and have seen hair dressers at both high and low end salons and Tina, without a doubt, takes the cake. When I arrived for my first appointment I had my doubts given the building and location, but I couldn't be happier with my experience at Total Image. I see Tina for cuts and color for my long hair and she is personable, flexible with appointments (often staying late into the evening to accommodate my work schedule), and highly knowledgeable. Went in for the first time today to see Tina based on other Yelp recommendations. She was extremely attentive to my concerns, and it was obvious that she REALLY cared about the result and whether it worked for me or not. She took her time even though she had another client waiting, did not rush, and made sure I knew I could come back for a touch-up or for any changes as needed free of charge. (I have super short, fine but curly hair that is hard to cut and looks different every day). It looks great so far, and I'm relieved to know that I once again have someone I can go to and trust. I was really looking forward to trying a new salon while spending a weekend back in Gainesville. My regular salon, Mode was all booked and it seemed like every other salon in Gainesville was too. I stumbled upon Total Image via Yelp and I'm really disappointed because according to the reviews it is awesome. But let me be the first to tell you.. it is not. The location isn't aesthetically appealing at all, both inside and outside. I walked inside though, giving it a chance. The interior didn't appear like a salon at all and the music that was being played is terrible. From the second I walked in I smelt cigarette smoke, so I asked the woman who greeted me if this building was a smoking building. She seemed surprised and told me that someone must have been smoking out back and that she would go and shut the back door. As I waited for my appointment, the smell did not go away, I could tell that there was alot of smoke sitting in this room. I looked around and 2 hair stylists were coughing away... gross, and did not seem welcoming to me at all. As I got more and more uncomfortable assessing the situation, I decided to leave and I'm glad I did. I'm not sure who would want to get a hair cut in such an environment. Go to Mode and ask for a beginner stylist who will go a great job at the same price, but won't cough and make your hair smell like smoke. read more

I've been going to GAIL at Total Image for 8 months or so now. She is AMAZING!!! I've been growing my hair out from a super short pixie cut and she has kept my hair looking great even through the awkward growing stages and never pushed me to cut it, just the necessary trims needed for growth!! AND let's talk about COLOR!!! She's a master!! My color has never looked better!! Tina, Kara, Gail and Tini make you feel like you're in the salon from Steel Magnolias I swear...not common in most salons anymore. Trust me when I say "as homey as it is" these ladies are up to date with ALL of today's color and cuts!!! The talent in that salon is off the chart! I've never had such a positive experience at a hair salon. I admit, it looks a little sketch from the outside, but you have to trust that it's the best place in town. The first time I went to Tina I wanted a big change- my hair was halfway down my back and I wanted it cut into a bob. My hair is very curly, so it's very hard to get it right, and because the change was so big Tina asked me if I was sure several times as we talked about it- she's the kind of person who will tell you if the cut you want will look good on you or not, and make suggestions. She'll do what you want, but before you make the decision she'll tell you straight up whether she thinks it's a good call, and the honesty is really refreshing, probably kept a few people from making bad decisions. She also went slow with it to make sure the length was right, and my hair turned out great! I look like Baby from Dirty Dancing. Best haircut I've ever had. If you don't like the cut or its uneven for some reason, Tina offers to get you in right away so she can fix it for free. I've never had anyone offer that before! I've had my hair cut there several times, and I haven't had to go back for a fix, but it's a very nice offer considering I've had some bad haircuts done by other people (including people in Gainesville). She also sells product at a very reasonable price(there's a really good one for curly hair), and the cut is also very reasonably priced. read more

Over winter break I was in Gainesville just for a week and needed a haircut. This place had the highest reviews and my experience definitely attests to the 5 stars. Made an appointment at 10 pm at night, went in at 10 am the next morning, and was seated almost immediately. I can't remember the name of the lady who cut my hair but she had an adorable little girl hanging out in the salon, who, when I came in, ran up to me for a hug. What a fantastic way to be greeted! Anyway, I was in and out in 30 minutes, with exactly the haircut I wanted. She simply asked me "what're we doing today?" and I said that I wanted a lot more layers in my hair. Boom, done, efficiently and well - my hair felt amazingly soft and light all day from the products she used (shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner). If I lived in Gainesville, I would only come here! Too bad I'm on the West Coast. I've never been better treated in a hair salon - not in the fake way either, but entirely genuine and real. Loved it. I went in to Total Image because of reviews here on Yelp. Tina gave a good hair cut. Not the most amazing I've ever had, but not the worst either, and a total bargain compared to prices I've paid in the past at $25. The building was older, but was cute and kitchy. She did look at my fine, thin hair and suggest that I should get a body wave. Yep, a perm. She explained that they have come a long way since the 80s/90s perms (which I had a few of, and it was a lovely for the time cascade of soft, silky, spiral curls). She curled my hair after the cut to show me an example of what the body wave would turn out like...it was nice, just some soft waves that gave my hair some body and bounce. I scheduled an appointment for the body wave, and she told me it would take 1-1.5 hours. The day of my appointment I arrived in the salon. Tina had someone in the chair, and there were four people waiting. Now, Tina works alone, no receptionist, no hair sweeper, no shampoo girl, just her. She was running seriously behind, and kept calling me Miss instead of my name, so I don't know if she had me confused with someone else or was just being polite. I could tell she was flustered, and honestly I should have rescheduled at that point. She finally got me in the chair, and started my hair, then juggled me in and out of the chair, shampoo chair, and dryer, while seeing other clients. My appointment was at 1:30, and I didn't get out till 5pm. The floor was covered in unswept hair (not mine) and Tina reaked of cigarette smoke. When I left, my hair was wet, it was a mess of kinky, tight spiral curls, and felt dry and strawlike. It was horrible, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt because she said it needed to settle and would look different/much better in the next few days. The next day it was worse. I was in tears and didn't want to get out of bed. It was a frizzy mess, and the texture was horrible. On day two I had to leave to go out of town for a week. While out of town, my hair was in such bad condition it started to break off. I rushed to a nearby salon to see what they could do. I ended up cutting off about six inches of my hair, taking it up to chin length, getting a protein treatment. My hair is slowing improving, but the damage that was done at Total Image can't be undone. I'm just trying to prevent further damage and grow my hair out at this point. Tina seems to be a big fan of curly hair, and can give a decent cut. If that is what you have/are looking for, then give her a try. If you want a chemical treatment, or have fine/thin hair, or happen to come in the salon on a busy day, watch out! read more

My favorite short hair cut I've had! Everyone was very nice and Kara did a great job. I've been to a lot of different salons in Gainesville and have gotten a lot of different cuts , but this is definitely my favorite! I will be back regularly. Their prices are way more than fare.
