The flatland was nonexistent in taco and the added veggies was very little and topped with iceberg lettuce. The price of $10 for taco was not worth it. I would have paid maybe $5 . Other person with me order a super burrito was pork. It had no flavor and was tasteless. I could have paid less and eaten better food at a fast food taqueria. I ordered a carne asada burrito to go. $19.64 plus I gave a $4.00 tip. The burrito came to me in a Tupperware like container with a bunch of sour cream next to the burrito making the whole side of the burrito soggy. There were no plastic utensils or napkins. Usually the sour cream would be inside the burrito and the burrito itself would be wrapped in foil so that the burrito to go could be eaten on the go. I will never go there again! Love this little gem of a restaurant! From the festive ambiance to the delicious French influence on traditional Mexican dishes, this place does not disappoint. Check out the fabulous collection of what looks like Tlaquepaque red clay pottery on the wall when you first walk in. Colorful banners and more art decorate the rest of the place. But what about the food, you ask? We tried a number of appetizers to start, including calamari (squid) rings, poblano relleno, guacamole and chips, coconut prawns and jalapeño poppers. Everything was super tasty, and the fried foods were lightly battered and fried. The poppers and relleno were filled with a delicious combination of cheese and spices that perfectly complimented the chiles and salsa. The star for me was the guacamole. The big mistake I think most restaurants make is that they tart up their guacamole far too much. Tortilla Flats' guacamole was avocado, a little chopped tomato, and salt to taste. These simple flavors meld so well together, who needs anything else? I could taste the avocado the most, which is the way I want my guacamole! What I especially liked about the menu options were the variations on the enchilada. So often I have been to a Mexican restaurant that might serve one or two different types of enchiladas. Usually with a red or a green sauce. Sometimes you might get lucky and find a mediocre cheese sauce on the menu. What I found at Tortilla Flats is one of my favorites: mole on an enchilada! I have found my own little piece of heaven on the central coast! My only wish is that there was more mole on the enchilada. It is delicious so pour it on! Finally, for dessert, they had my favorite Mexican snacks: churros and Mexican hot chocolate. The churros were substantial, freshly fried and perfectly dusted with cinnamon and sugar. They were delicious on their own. Dipped into the Mexican hot chocolate they were even more of a treat! Absolutely delightful. Tuesday night and the place was full and lively. Clearly, lots of people love the place as much as I do. The margaritas are big and colorful. I had wine, but many in my party enjoyed the margaritas, and one gushed about the mango margarita. The appetizers were crisp and tasty, the shrimp was outstanding. Everyone loved their meals. I hadn't been to Tortilla Flats in a good 8 years. Turns out I can wait another 8 years to try again. Had a party of five with reservations and were seated immediately. Food was pretty good but service was fucking horrible. How hard is it to fill a water glass or to ask if anyone needs more chips or salsa. And then to drop a bill off have us put two cards down to split only to come back and tell us they forgot to add two drinks we ordered 30 minutes fucking prior. Then to not be able to split two cards. Fuck that place. Horrible service. read more

I have been coming here for 15+ years and the enchiladas poblano are the best mexican dish I have ever had. The sweetness of the poblano sauce and the melted cheese make this the best food I have had in Santa Cruz and for that matter all of California. Tortilla flats is just amazing. Come here all the time. Food/drink: the food is really rich, filling, and tasty here. I have gotten many different meals here and they have all been great. They have hands down the best margaritas ever, all fresh ingredients and so delicious. I usually get the traditional margarita but I have tried the blended fruit margaritas and they are so good!! They are perfectly blended and taste amazing. You will not be disappointed. They are strong and wonderful :) For dessert the flan is really good, highly recommended. Ambiance: pretty small inside and a very homey feel to it. There is a small bar where it's nice to sit and have drinks and chips and/or appetizers. Service: the service is always good here, very quick service and beautiful presentation of the food. The servers are always helpful with the menu too. Overall I really recommend this place. This is the first and last time coming to this place. Food is very pricey and not good quality. I had a carne asada burrito. It was a small tortilla filled with a very small portion of skirt steak that was somehow flavorful but not that good. We also had a carne asada taco that did not taste good filled with standard lettuce and tomate salad. If the intention is to serve Mexican food, this place is failing by far. I've been eating here since the restaurant opened and until today I never had a bad meal. Tonight's dinner was inedible. I got a chile relleno that was a canned chili wrapped in an omelette that was half warm, half cold, meaning it was microwaved, not freshly prepared. My companion got what was supposed to be a fish taco but it was a pile of lettuce and a sliver of fish on a flour tortilla. Service was non existent. Many positive attributes: Excellent salsa, excellent flatland and vegetarian options, great salad (cucumber dill is a marvelous dressing), friendly and conscientious service, a magical ambiance, and tasty margaritas. My friend Cheryl owns this place. She puts a lot of thought and heart into it! It's a comfort place for me. Food is the best around, staff is welcoming. I love it!!! Great selection of drinks and food. Also the best fresh made daily addicting chips and salsa. The negative reviews puzzle me. Maybe they are used to Americanized Mexican food. I've eaten here a few times and the food has always been pretty good. A bit pricey for what it is, but good. The takeout meal I ordered last night, however was horrible enough I had to write a review. I ordered the fish tacos (Alaskan Pollock according to the menu) and the Red Pepper Salmon. Both had the same sauce according to the menu. The fish tacos were barely serviceable and tasted exceptionally bland. Since both items had the same sauce I would have expected them to look the same, but the fish tacos did not appear to have any sauce. They tasted like they were pan fried in a ton of oil and that's it. All they had on them was a ton of diced cabbage and a speckling of tomatoes. The salmon takes the crown for worst thing I have eaten in a while. Smothered in this red sauce, I couldn't even tell what I ordered. The salmon itself was so bad I threw out 75% of it. It was completely overcooked and leather-like in consistency. The sauce had hints of what was supposed to be flavor but just came out like a mess. The rice and beans were also equally as tough to eat. I am not sure if they changed chefs as it's been some time since I have been here, but the food as it stands is not worth the price at all. Really wanted to support this place as a local, and knowing the restaurant is under new ownership. While the restaurant inside is very well decorated, and service seemed fine they forgot one of my items on Christmas Eve which really put a damper on the night. When I got home and called they were already closed. I called them, left a voicemail, and have since then called multiple times, wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt and not bash on facebook, yelp, etc. However nobody has seemed to care. Also aggravating as I tipped well on the to go order. Would not give this place another try or recommend. Poor customer service. read more

Went there last night for dinner, Black Friday. This place was hoppin' but after 10 short minutes we had a table. We got a margarita on the rocks, which was delicious. I ordered the chicken flautas a la cart - they were bland but good. My husband got the enchilada and taco combo which he loved. The waitress was fantastic, pleasant, knowledgeable with our questions, and running from table to table; all the while still checking on us. I can't say that we've tried everything (we tend to be creatures of habit), but we have sampled, we have reordered often enough to know that it's consistently tasty and comforting. Food was bad and pricey. Order nachos with carne asada and a pork super burrito. Nachos were ok at best and the burrito was just bad. The rice itself tasted dry and almost tasted like Indian rice. Salsa was bad. The chips were ok but were warm. Jalapeño margarita was good and the beer was fine. What made it worse was the waitress who served us. No smile, cold, and not very approachable. The chips are awful--taste like CARDBOARD--the server, Alejandro (who was excellent), explained that they were healthier..but the old chips--that were GOOD--have been replaced by the "healther" cardboard chips. They were delicious as were the Margaritas. However, I am only giving a three star review because the salsa was not good. Very bland, no flavor it was like a chunky tomato sauce.
