We really enjoy everything we have been served at the Maya Mexican Restaurant in Scott's Valley, but we especially LOVE the crispy shredded beef tacos served with rice and beans. The shredded beef tacos are consistently crispy, flavorful, juicy, and never greasy. They are simply topped with fresh lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. A dab of table salsa is all I need for perfection, but my wife prefers hers plain. We have ordered them to go and the quality held up through the 20 minute drive home. Absolutely everything from the chips and salsa to the rice and beans are fresh, flavorful, and served with a smile. We are so happy to have found this little Mexican gem! read more

This was my first time here. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was nice (I especially loved the giant acoustic guitar rendition on the ceiling) but the food was, well, not very good. I got the lunch special beef fajitas. They only came with 2 tortillas, no sour cream, some beans and rice. Nothing was special really. It did fill me up but I just can't recommend this dish. Will not go back. I was there with my 4 year old son and infant daughter. We were sat down and it took about ten minutes for the waiter to come over. Then a party of six came in after us. The waiter took their order first and we waited for over an hour for our items to come out. We ordered an appetizer and never saw it. After the hour mark and the table of six getting their food, I told them we needed to leave because it was late and too tough on the 4yo. I told them I'd pay and leave, he said it would still be another ten minutes then a woman came over and said it was ready. So they made it to go. The food quality is mediocre at best. This is a rare find, truly authentic, nice place to hang out, great bar and a couple big tvs in the lounge area. They happen to have the best vegetable enchiladas in town because they are not just all cheese, but actually have grilled veggies, fully cooked and diced and thrown in with onions, bell peppers and cheese with lots of flavor. They come of course with rice and refried beans and we get them about once every couple weeks. I am writing the review because I notice even on weekends the place is like half full and I would be heartsick if they closed. read more

This was one of the worst meals I have ever eaten at an "authentic Mexican" restaurant. The guacamole looked like it was days old. My partner couldn't take more than one bite of the green enchilada because it was so salty and tasted like it had spoiled. The chicken taco was just grilled chicken inside a tortilla. No sauce, salsa, cilantro or onion. It was some of the driest chicken I've ever tasted and came with raw onion on the side? Everything tasted like it was straight from the can. The server didn't know what type of pork came in the taco, nor what kind of beef came in the nachos. The entire meal came to $90 plus an expected tip. When we inquired about potential compensation for our awful meal, we were met with unprofessionalism and a very small discount considering we ate maybe 10% of the meal. There was one nice young hostess who did her very best to help out & even brought a new enchilada when we weren't made aware that there were more options for it. The place was cute inside, but we should have known that it was almost completely empty for a reason. Overall, please skip this place. There are MUCH better restaurants in and around Scotts Valley. It's not worth the impoliteness and worse than mediocre meal. We both agreed Taco Bell would have done us better. read more

I really want to love this restaurant. My family and I have been coming here for years, but to tell you the truth, it's just not worth it. The food is bland, and the margaritas are weak. When my husband and I ate there a few days ago we were made aware of the $3 per basket refill for chips and $1 for salsa. - Honestly, the salsa was the best thing there. My food, chicken enchiladas- was boring and dull. Plus, I was anxious the whole time about ordering a second margarita because it takes them a while to deliver but I was unsatisfied by the first which was small and weak. Horrible. Margarita was horrible... Chicken mole was disgusting and bland... An overcooked flattened chicken breast was dry... And some weird lighter colored mole was poured over the top of it. That was it. Refried beans were bland and tasteless not seasoned at all... Tortilla was underwhelming. I was fooled by the presentation of the decor which I liked... But the food and drinks did not match what I was expecting. My friend told me not to go there because it was terrible... I didn't believe her and boy was I sorry... Had to try it for myself. Stopped here for food and dessert. The staff was very friendly and we got our food quickly. I only tried their sopapillas. I had never heard of it or tried it so I was a bit nervous, but they were amazing! They remind me of buñuelos, the ice cream definitely made them taste even better! The worst mexican food I have had in California. I ordered a beef chimichunga with rice and beans for a dinner plate. The rice and beans were run of the mill, extra basic. It tasted like Knorr "red rice" bouillon seasoning. They did remake a main course for me with ground beef instead and it was even more disgusting than the chunks of beef in verde sauce. There was 2 uneaten chimichungas made by them for me. They charged us for a the full dinner for the rice and beans I ate, but whatever. They did their job. Most of us didn't finish their plate. My California born, out of state friend said that it was "a little bit better than the mexican food in Iowa but not much" and "my food wasn't great." She hadn't eaten all day and didn't even make it half way through her burrito. It was that blah. Our server was nice. That counts for something. She checked in on us only once after the food was delivered. At the end of the meal a buser finally came around to fill my water glass. There was some tables but the place wasn't packed. Gratuity was already added to our bill when we got it. We had a table of 8. I didn't notice that mentioned anywhere on the menu but I didn't read the whole thing. I only looked at the plate options. I got to spend time with friends that are like family and that's what counts. Now that I am back home I will eat again. Those chimichungas were truly inedible IMO. Meh, meh, meh, meh and meh Is there a food genre called "Denny's Mexican"? If there is, this is it. Very bland; Hispanic servers, but not a Hispanic person sitting at a table to be seen. I ordered the rellenos which were wrapped in some form of relleno wrap instead of being dipped. Very strange and very thin. I'm not sure what was going on the cheese. Insanely stringy. We waited 45 minutes and had to remind the waitress of our burrito. There was something strange about the chicken that had been cut into cubes. Mayas has been a favorite since I was a child. I've been eating here for over 20 years and it has been consistently delicious. Some of the items I love are the tortilla soup, crispy shredded chicken tacos, the camarones rancheros, and the ranchero beans. It is so hard to not fill up on chips and salsa, because their chips are the perfect thin and crispy, and the salsa is so so good. It definitely is a place for locals but we lucked out without it being too crowded my first time. I ordered the tortilla soup since it was cold out and I felt like I needed more liquids in my system. I also couldn't turn down the chance to try their chicken mole. The tortilla soup came out first and it definitely hit the spot. Plenty of tortilla strips but not enough to overtake the soup. Just enough soup to be considered a soup but also fIlled with plenty of other goodness! Not salty which happens at other places. The chicken mole was delicious. I ordered a Cadillac Margarita after 30 minutes asked server to check on it, she never came back with it. Finally it was served 40 minutes later. This was absolutely the worst margarita I've ever been served! Clearly bartender didn't know what what a Cadillac Margie is. Only crap tequila and lemon-lime mix. I looked over at the bar bartender was sitting/visiting with couple other people at bar while others sitting at our table waiting on drinks. Food was mediocre at best. I had a veggie burrito. To start off when I came in the decoration was very nice . the restaurant is very nicely dim lighted and the seats felt cozy. upon visit they immediately gave us a menu and chips and salsa. the salsa was all right could be spicier but however the chips were amazing cooked just right and salted perfectly . After they asked us for drinks and then gave us coca-Cola and lemonade. my kids have told me that the lemonade is very great. They then gave us enchiladas that looked really good. My kids have said they are good. I got carnitas and they looked good . How ever they put everything one the aside including tortillas, the meat , avocado , onions . And there were also tomatoes. I wish they brought them in built tacos but the ingredients looked and tasted fresh , overall everything else was nice , great family restaurant and I recommend it . 5 stars !! read more

There is not much Mexican food in this area to choose from, and the food is usually pretty good. The service, however, leaves nothing to be desired. After not getting chicken in my chicken tortilla soup to it being returned to me cold, this service was awful. When I asked the waitress what happened? She said she was busy. Four people were working in the restaurant, and we were the only customers eating in the dining area. I asked her what she would tip me if I had been her waitress? She replied she don't know?
