The Tornado

So disappointed in the fishing trip. We went out for a day trip for salmon/bottom fish. This was the first ocean fishing for 3 of my group. It was the lack of communication that was most frustrating. No welcome aboard, no info on how long it would take us to get to the fishing grounds, no info on How to catch fish, no tips, no help. The 2 guys on the crew spent most of their time with one guy fishing off the bow. They obviously knew him, don't know if he was a friend or staff or regular, but he had a great day. Got full attention and pulled in many fish. Nothing for my group of 4. Captain did not tell us we were done salmon fishing just bring it up and off we went. None of my group caught salmon. The bottom fishing was fun and we were on the fish but we only fished for one hour. Nobody told us we were heading back just reel in. Of course we all "got" fish to leave the boat with but this trip quite frankly sucked. There are a lot of charters at Westport, don't take a chance on a bad day. Try another boat.

The view on the ride out to catch some Salmon!

I've heard it said that a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of working. In our case, we had an INCREDIBLE day of fishing on the Tornado. The Boat is very nice and well-maintained, including Men's & Women's restrooms. It makes for a comfortable ride out to the best fishing spots. The Fishing was almost non-stop once we got to the right spots. Beautiful salmon and rockfish limits for the entire boat, with everyone enjoying themselves. Saving the best for last, The Crew was absolutely stellar, A+ across the board. I would highly recommend them to both new and well-seasoned fishermen. They took care of everything, and worked untiringly for the entire trip. Our time aboard the Tornado was an unforgettable experience!

Had a great time fishing for bottom fish on this boat. We started with rock fish which did not…read moretake long to get the boats limit of 7 fish each. The skipper actually dropped the anchor to fish this spot which something that I have not seen on the ocean. We used live bait (anchovies) which kind of surprised me, but it was effective. We used light gear with 10 lb test line which was really a hoot. From there we moved a short distance and fished for flounder. These fish were small, but we were motivated because the flounders were to be the bait for our true target, which was ling cod. After the flounder we moved to another spot in deeper water to fish for ling cod. This spot was in deeper water so we couldn't anchor but the skipper did a great job of keeping us over the fish. We limited out with 2 nice size ling cods per person and a few extras for the crew. The deckhand did a great job keeping us rigged up and baited. He also filleted all the fish for a good price and did a great job. The only downer was my mistake. I like to follow the track of the boat using my phone and a marine map. Apparently, this is a huge no no. They are concerned with people stealing their spots. I totally understood the skippers concern, so I turned off my phone and put it away. As angry as he got, I'd think he would put up a sign or something telling folks that gps tracking is verboten. Or maybe something in the terms and conditions. I would definitely go bottom fishing on this boat again. The skipper has good knowledge and boat skills. If there are bottom fish to be had, he will put you on them.

Went here on a dreary gray day and I'm sure the weather affected my opinion of this place. A friend…read moreof mine loves this place because he used to come down here with his wife when she was still alive and it is near and dear to his heart. He convinced a bunch of us friends to check it out and well, it's nice. We ordered our seafood lunches at Merino's and I was excited about eating at the tables on the curb. He really wanted us to wait and eat at the beach. Okay! That sounds awesome. Five minutes later we're at the park and the picnic benches had no view of the beach. You literally were sitting at a bench next to the parking lot. At least it was right next to the restrooms. Then he wanted to walk around the shore. The path did technically see the shore, but the distance was like half a mile and these senior citizens were not going down to the sand. My sister and I were not going to miss being actually on the beach, so we ran down the the beach head and it was nice, but it was cold so we didn't go in the water. We later headed up to hang out with our senior friends and it didn't look good. They got to the first bench and one of our friends has a bad knee, another has leg cramps, another didn't feel steady, and another was doing great because she brought her walker with her and was getting in her steps. Our fearless leader was planning on walking another mile and a half to the lighthouse but my sister put the kibosh on that. We would've been fine, but looking at these poor ladies, they needed to walk back to the car before they couldn't. I felt bad for our leader because he wanted to show us the magic of this place, but naw, maybe next time because these ladies need help. I will give the beach area props because they are very accessible, but even with that, you have to know what your people can handle.

I got the honor to Fish with Dave on his first trip out for Ling and Rockfish 2022…read more You won't find a better Capt and Deckhand than Dave and his crew. Conditions were less than ideal, it's March and that's what we signed up for. The boat limited! It wasn't easy, but if you want to catch fish to bring home and have a Capt actually bust his ass, disregard fuel consumption to get you on fish to fill that Freezer then Capt Dave is your guy. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED. Fished with Dave three times, every time with limits! Next trip in May. Can't wait.

On their way to West Port Sunday August 30, 2020 my husband Roger received a phone call from Mariann stating the trip was cancelled due to weather. Roger was confused since the forecast was good and they still had a day before they were to leave. Mariann said their forecast looked bad and they were cancelling. Roger called one of the men that were already at West Port and told him their boat was cancelled. Roger was told that the boat was loading right then to leave for a 2 day tuna trip that night. Roger called Marianne who passed him on to Dave asking why was the trip loading for that night? Dave told him that Fridays trip was cancelled due to bad weather so he was taking the men out that night and bumped our crew. We also found out later that the other five men who were to leave with us on the 31st got moved to the 30th? WHAT? We did receive our money back but what about the gas for two vechicles (five hours each way), the time off these men took, and the tuna they were hoping to catch. (The boat came back loaded. ) This trip was planned, paid for, agreed to in writing in January 2020.
