Whenever I find conveyor belt sushi, my immediate response is - let's gooooo! In my itinerary building for Toronto, I came across Tora and it was an immediate yes let's try it.
Environment / Location:
Located inside the Yorkdale Shopping Mall on the 2nd floor, Tora is nicely tucked away in its own corner so it has it's own space first of all. They have their own elevator so if there's no hostess on the 1st floor, come up to the 2nd floor for that hostess reception area. I believe the 1st floor is more for weekend / prime time busy time to help with crowd control and what not. We were immediately greeted and you place yourself on a waitlist if there is one. For international travelers who don't have an international phone line, use the yelp check in as a work around. Insider tip ; )
Service:
Everyone was mostly nice and welcoming. No complaints here.
Interior / Ambiance:
Had a very modern clean vibe inside. It wasn't overly crammed and there was ample space. There was a nice bar area with open glass views to the exterior. They have single seaters as well as tables for groups. If you have a baby/stroller, they'll sit you down by one of the tables and that'll work that way.
Food:
I have to say, this was probably the biggest letdown. I really wanted to like them. First and foremost, I have to say, this is conveyor belt made to order and they serve it to you. It's not the traditional sushi/sashimi/dish carousel that goes round and round so not knowing that - I was a little disappointed. You order everything with the screen order system that's on your table.
The sashimi and fish was average in my book, but there were so many shortcuts I didn't really care for. Wasabi and ginger packets - I'm a purist, I prefer to authentic stuff. The maki rolls and anything that required seaweed was a bit stale and tasted like out of the package. Lastly, you have the get the rice right. It's one of the main reasons sushi genre restaurants thrive or not. (case and point - look at Sugarfish). It's like your bread and butter. To me it was kind of dry and you weren't sure if it was brown or white rice. Didn't care for it. Also, I get that it's conveyor belt sushi so you have the rice molds (easy identifier with the square sushi shapes), but like mentioned before, there's something about made to order per item. It really provides that authenticity and care and the taste for me instead of a factory let's push it out kind of mentality. The hot food were the stars for us in the end. They do market this Aburi approach to some of their offerings which is like this semi-torched pressed nigiri / sushi but it's nothing to really rave over.
We ordered:
- Aba Ebi Nigiri - Same comments as other sushi comments below.
- Spicy Tora Set - The fish was solid. Didn't care for the square rice, I understand it's a mold for expediting purposes, but the ratio is off in my opinion and the rice. Got to get the rice right please.
- Salt / Pepper Chicken Wings - The irony was the hot food was just better in our opinion. The chicken came out piping out, the inside wasn't over cooked and there was a really nice crumbly crunch to the fry of the chicken wings.
- Kamatama Udon - This was probably the star for my partner and I. The flavors were delicious and it had this subtle sweetness that was probably from the bacon being caramelized imo. There was a soft boiled egg and mushrooms in it and the entire composition really worked. Highly recommend. It doesn't come out with a spoon so you have to ask for that separately...SMH, you couldn't just put it on a tray with the spoon as a more efficient setup.
- Crunchy Scallop Roll - Average. Nothing to rave about.
- Negi-Toro Maki - The negi-toro fish was solid, but the seaweed and rice just really killed it for me.
- Some Mackeral Nigiri - Same comments as other sushi comments above.
Summary:
To me, Tora is all about the fun conveyor belt made to order experience. The sushi rice, seaweed and the overall sushi quality was just a bit lacking and made one expecting more. This is a solid spot for a fun family meal, but don't expect that grade 'A' quality meal. More like a 'B-' for me if I had to give it a grade. If you do end up coming, I'd recommend getting some of the hot foods. We really enjoyed the Kamatama Udon and the Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings. read more
