I had the best experience here for my birthday last month. The ambiance is great, the staff was also great, the hostess was so friendly. I arrived a little early, so she sat me in a little waiting area until my table was ready and offered me a drink. I went on the weekend, and it was very busy for brunch at Bluegrass Brunch. I sat outside; it was gorgeous sitting on the patio with a view of the swamp rabbit trail and listening to the live band play. The waitress came over and took my order; the food was a little slow arriving, but it was packed, and I did not mind. I started with the Cinnamon Roll, which to me was all about the icing, which you could put on a piece of cardboard, and it would taste good, so to me, that was a win, but it wasn't your typical Cinnamon Roll; it was more like a dinner roll with icing on it, so if you plan on it being like one you would get in a mall, it is not; this is elevated, not as sweet, and a lot less cinnamon, which I enjoyed. For my main course, I got the Top Soil Breakfast, which was two eggs. I got them over medium with extra crispy bacon, and it was so thick and delicious. I also got breakfast potatoes, which were so nice and crispy, and do yourself a favor and ask for the homemade hot sauce; omg, the hot sauce was so good! I need to see if they sell that next time I am there; it was so good. All in all, it was a perfect breakfast with great quality food and great service. I will be back. read more

Sat outside in a covered patio area for brunch. I'm glad we were not sitting on the actual outside area because it ended up being a little bit cool. We were seated quickly and enjoyed a good cup of coffee while admiring all the totally decadent meals being served around us. There was a cinnamon roll that was huge with so much frosting on it. If I could've ordered that and handled that I would have, however, there was no way, but the people who ordered it seemed to love it, and I was impressed. My husband and I went here for brunch for an early anniversary celebration on a Saturday. Ambiance was great with some live music on the patio, our server was also great and very attentive. Unfortunately that's where the good parts ended. We got an Irish coffee and a Bloody Mary to start, both terrible. Irish coffee was very watered down (he did get it cold rather than hot) so maybe that's why, and my Bloody Mary had almost no flavor other than tomato juice/puree and a bit of vodka. We got biscuits and gravy with 2 eggs and the croque madame for our entrees, both were really bad and I don't say that often. The gravy on his tasted almost like a hollandaise sauce, kind of lemony and dill rather than sausage/umami. My croque madame was super dry, toast was burnt on the outside, the ham had almost no flavor, and my egg was very overcooked. For a Michelin recommended restaurant, this was definitely underwhelming/overpriced and not what we were expecting. The French toast was a let down. It wasn't very sweet or flavorful. It was kinda bland which I think is really hard to do for French toast. ‍ Shrimp & grits was okay, I've had better. It came with okra in it, which I didn't like. I don't like okra bc it tastes slimy to me, but their okra was the best I've ever had. I still picked it out but I did try it at least. From start to finish, this restaurant exceeded our expectations. The starter mackerel dip was phenomenal. My squash soup was so good I wanted to move into it. My review is based on eating brunch here on a Saturday. The staff immediately seemed so welcoming and cheerful. The menu was explained and my server was aware of my raw tomato allergy since I'd made a reservation with Resy. The space was nice but felt casual and comfortable. I decided to get the breakfast sandwich with a veggie patty. I do eat meat but for some reason, the veggie option just sounded really good. I liked that the English muffins are made in house along with as many of the components as possible and using local ingredients. The veggie patty was mildly spicy and had a very flavorful Indian spice profile. The breakfast potatoes were excellent as well. I did need to ask for my tea to be refilled. That was my only "complaint" about the experience. I will definitely be coming again for brunch sometime soon. It is on the pricey side but I thought the quality and the fresh local ingredients justified that price. They aren't just reheating frozen and delivered items. They are actually preparing interesting menu items and supporting local farms as well. The portion size was also filling, you can see from my photo that they actually give a decent amount of potatoes. While the menu was small, I think it offered a nice variety of sweet and savory, lighter meals and more hearty options. I got a cinnamon roll to go and it was also excellent. Y'all. OMG. The whole grain carrot pancakes are perfect. The cake, itself, melts in your mouth (even with a nice crisp exterior). I'm not usually a sweets person, even for brunch, but this was a great choice to share with the table as a starter! Visiting the South, I was drawn to the grits. Today's dish was Shrimp and Grits with a Creole creamy saucy. Fantastic! Literally as good as shrimp and grits from New Orleans. Even better. Whether it's the frittata, the hash, or the grits, do yourselves a favorite and try out the house made hot sauce. I honestly expected more considering the hype and how pretentious the staff and prices were. I went for brunch and was only impressed by 1 out of our 4 dishes. The star of the show was an elevated Benedict style dish with a béchamel sauce. The second runner up was the carrot pancakes. They were yummy but it really wouldn't have hurt to add a pinch more of the granola and compote on top. There was enough toppings for like two bites... The breakfast bowls with potatoes, eggs and sautéed veggies felt overly basic and something we could have made at home for a fraction of the cost. The Bloody Mary didn't wow me either. First time experience and enjoyed the whole thing. Staff was fantastic explaining drinks and food . We loved that they are a very true farm to table. They have a tastings type menu...pick an item from small.plates, entree and dessert($65). You can add wine pairings for $25. These were all excellent.. the mushroom and brussel sprout dish is amazing along with the beets and berries salad. The sauces that accompany the dishes are super tasty as the chef appears to have painstakingly taken time to perfect. We loved that the chef was there to see and approve each entree coming out of the kitchen....and at times--- unacceptable dishes were sent back to be fixed. The sommelier wine pairings were perfect with the dishes...admittedly I would not drink some of these on their own but the pairings were spot on. The staff is very kind and knowledgeable . Two minor points to note....if you aren't even a bit of a foodie....the menu may be "too scary.." There appears to be no simple menu regular staples . I've heard people rave about Topsoil, but I hadn't made it out to TR to try it until this past weekend for a little bday celebration. The menu definitely pressures you to go for the 3 course meal deal, which we figured we would avoid since we didn't need that much food, but it turns out our bill would've been cheaper had we gone that route. We tried the Duck Cavatelli and Brasstown Beef. Both small plates, but the taste and presentation were wonderful. We split the Hummus app, which has whipped ricotta in the middle - 10/10. The bread was also super fresh. We also tried their version of an espresso martini and it was the perfect pick-me-up. I'd love to go back, but definitely more of a special occasion spot! read more

Our server Rik was more concerned with speaking highly of the food source and rambling on, it was a real turnoff. We've had much better service in a lesser rated spot. Martini was served in a super small wine glass, charged 18.00, plus 1.50 for blue cheese olives! It was NOT a proper martini at all, and if that is their definition of a Martini, it speaks volumes on how they do things. I wanted to say something but due to celebrating 29 yrs together, we stayed quiet. Food menu and food was underwhelming, portion sizes were small and overpriced for the charge of a 3 course meal with what you get. For a Michelin recommended establishment, this was a true letdown. We live in TR and four of our friends from Hilton Head Island visited for a long weekend in September. We decided to take our guests to the restaurant. The food was good but nothing great. We did not have a problem with the prices which was a set price of $65+++ per person if I remember correctly. When the check came I noticed that they charged us .50c for olives in our martinis. Not blue cheese olives, just regular olives which we like. Believe me Topsoil is just a normal restaurant for us and we were not trying to get anything for free. I mentioned to our waiter that "never in our life have we ever been charged for olives in a martini at any restaurant at any star level". His reply was that "these are Spanish Olives". We informed him that is where most olives come from and that olives are part of a martini. We were up charged for our premium vodka but that is to be expected. The real insult is that the manager stopped us as we were leaving the restaurant and asked if we wanted out .50c back. I told her that "she totally missed the point and that it was not about the money". I was trying to do them a favor but she was not smart enough to realize that. I told her that "she could keep the money and that we would not be back". Their loss but maybe their business is so good that it does not matter to them. read more

I asked for a bit more and was schooled by this woman on how wine tasting are about. As for the portions after spending just under $300 for two people we stopped at Publix the get a half sub in the way home. As for farm to table is the was a handful of vegetables (which were great) I would say this is a very generous description. It's not like it's expensive for great food, but we felt violated so to speak. We will not be back and absolutely don't recommend. My wife and I had never eaten at this restaurant, but passing through Travelers rest had seen it many times. We just happen to be in travels rest last night for an outing with other friends at the tasting room down the street. So I made a reservation for topsoil for 5:30 PM. The couple that was with us were in their early 80s and a little infirm. When we walked in, there were very few people in the restaurant and many tables available towards the front with plenty of light. They took us all the way to the rear of the restaurant in a very dark corner at a table that had a bench seat up against the wall and then two padded seats on the other side. I asked the hostess if we could not sit at one of the nice tables upfront with plenty of light and padded seats and she said no we would have to wait for those because she did not have enough wait staff at that time to use those tables. So we agreed and sit at the dark hard bench table in the rear of the restaurant. They took our drink orders before we saw the menu and then it was too late. The menu came which you can see attached and it was terrible. There were only four options for entrées and each option was $65 per person. I asked them if they didn't have something simple to eat like maybe a cheeseburger or a sandwich and they said nope it's these four things or nothing. At that point I was ready to get up and leave but unfortunately the couple with us had already ordered mixed drinks so we were stuck. So I did ask our server who was very nice if we could split a plate and he said yes so we got the Virginia striped bass. The other couple got the Bevatte steak and the bass however, being older they don't eat much so they told them they didn't want all of the salad or the desserts that was part of the three course meal they just wanted their entrée. So the waiter said that was fine but they'd have to pay the full price anyway so they did. The food came and my wife and I shared the one little plate not very much food on it however, the food was really good. My friend let me taste his Bavette steak and it was very good. So if you're a person who doesn't care about money and you have money to waste, go ahead and eat there. If you're a little more frugal, like I am, avoid it like the plague. read more

Service was amazing, food had the right heart behind it but brunch was just executed poorly in my opinion. The server hyped up the tomato & ricotta toast so much I ordered it. It wasn't "toast" so much as bread, no crisp, probably an inch thick, ricotta was lacking salt & they laid 3 small wedges of tomatoes across the top that didn't even begin to cover the surface of the bread. A better presentation would've been to slice the tomatoes thinly & fan them out over the surface. Dish also really needed like a micro-greens or arugula salad over the ricotta. If the dish is about celebrating tomatoes I wish tomatoes would've been more of a focal point instead of hiding behind that thickass bread. read more

We had never been to Topsoil and saw the great reviews.. it was Valentines weekend and chose the Chef experience where the chef picks your 5 course meal. We arrived and were quickly seated. The host explained the farm to table philosophy at Topsoil and that each Sunday they do the chef experience. Robert was our server and he was fantastic, very knowledgeable and attentive Our first course was a freshly prepared dip with watermelon radish, cucumber, fish and roe.. with their home made potato chips.. very good. Next was scallops seasoned and seared with a house risotto. The scallops were fresh and so tender. Third course was dark duck with another in house pasta. The duck was flavorful and the portions were right on point. The fourth course was duck breast cooked medium with potato, apple and other vegetables. The duck was beautiful and moist, very tender. The final course DESSERT was the chefs take on an Apple fritter, with candied kumquats on top... the fruit was flavorful and the pastry was light and dusted with cinnamon sugar goodness! The decor is filled with a farmhouse chic flair and the restrooms have wall sized photos of working the land. Travelers Rest is a special town at the end of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail however the real find is Topsoil , a farm to table restaurant. The time to come is lunch or dinner but their prepared to serve even between those times. We had two satisfying charcuterie boards. The Cheese Board; three unique cheese selections, pickles, red onions, carrots, cucumbers and rustic crunchy bread with grainy mustard. The Trio of vegetable spreads; eggplant zaalouk, cumin-coriander beet hummus, cilantro poblano and rustic crunchy bread was above expectations with full flavored spreads that were savory and sweet. We washed it all down with the perfectly balanced lemonade. Theses travelers were fed and rested. A 15 min drive from Greenville and plenty of parking. Highly recommended. read more
