For years I had a very hard time finding someone who could cut my hair with precision in this town. It was depressing really. Finally I discovered Shimu at Toppers and she has been excellent. Each time I go in there it's a nice environment and Shimu gives me that time and attention to detail that my hair needs. She listens and executes her Haircutting talents with perfection. i had been going to Toppers for a long time. I was unhappy with my stylist for some time; reason being she never spoke to me, she yanked on my hair getting knots out, to the point my head snapped back! I'm done with Toppers! I am a big fan of Shimu Rai who is a stylist (cosmetologist) at Toppers Salon in Ukiah. Shimu has been cutting my hair for ~10 years now having previously worked at another salon in Ukiah. Shimu has a private room at Toppers with a separate entrance - a good thing in these times of COVID-19. Shimu has always listened to my requests, and has offered helpful advice. Shimu seems less stressed and much happier at Toppers. I'm glad she moved as her old salon was a corporate assembly line. She is able to offer more personalized service at Toppers. read more

Made an appointment for 3pm Got there at 255 and was told to wait till 330 because that's when my appointment really was. Waited till 340 and was told the stylist wasn't there and in fact the owner was confused and messed up the whole scheduling, and said I was a "no show" Friday, well I work fridays so, no I didn't schedule it for Friday. While this is happening a walk in comes and the owner takes the new woman client walk in, instead of offering to cut my hair. Like really? Take the next customer before handling the first? I was on the need for a hair cut and change. As a male, going from medium length to a shorter, cropped style I attempted to go to the barber shop next door to Toppers. They are appointment only, and lucky for me Toppers had a "WALK IN WELCOME" sign. I walked in, and the lady there (hair stylist with a client) was happy to provide help. This is an Aveda salon. Great products from real ingredients that are good for the stylist, the client, and the earth. This also means that there is no underlying smell of chemicals in the salon. Yay! I got a same-day appointment and went in for some corrective color. Laura did a fantastic job of restoring me to my natural hair color, working from photos and my roots. My natural color is a dark ash brown but with gold and red highlights, and she captured it perfectly. Wow! She was really fun and friendly, the products smell wonderful and didn't burn at all. $80. I guess that's about what I was expecting for corrective color, and I am SO relieved to be looking like myself again! Also, I am so relieved to find a stylist who actually knows how to deal with curly hair and doesn't try to pretend like it's straight. Thank you! While I was in, a kid was getting his hair cut - I guess he's super sensitive, and the mom was sure that he got shampooed with something that didn't contain any sesame, nut-based things, etc. These people know their products and their ingredients. I would recommend Toppers to anyone. They're fun, friendly, extremely competent, and very service oriented. And right downtown! read more

Visited Toppers for the first time today - they do walk-ins, but there was a 30min wait. Got on the list and came back later. Emily did my hair, and she really did a nice job. My hair looks just like the picture I took in, and the botched cut I went in with is history. I'm really pleased with it. A plus for me was the lack of useless chit-chat. I'm there for a service, not to meet my new best friend. Not sure about the Aveda product line yet. I'll give it another try, but I'm not overly impressed so far. My whole family goes to Courtney. We are from Southern California and were having a really hard time finding an Aveda salon with a skilled stylist in Mendocino County. The salon is modern, relaxing, clean, and well maintained. Courtney always listens and does an amazing job with color. We have never been disappointed and have been going to her for a few years. I've been going to Miss Courtney Gupta at Toppers Salon for years! She is the absolute best and I always leave happy. Even after weeks of getting my hair done it always still looks amazing and fresh thanks to the products she suggests for me. She listens to what you want and always gives the best advise. Whether you are looking for a drastic change or just a touch up, Courtney is the girl to see. Everyone else who works there is so nice and the salon is beautiful. Went there for the first time and wanted high-lights. Told the young lady doing my hair that it tended to highlight red, and I wanted more ash-y highlights. Hair came out kind of orange, she put a rinse on it, which faded almost immediately, and my hair was totally fried. Dry and horrible from the bleach they used. Now I'm faced with cutting off all the fried ends when I was trying to grow out my hair. I won't go back there and would not recommend. read more

I was skeptical because I usually don't let anyone but my barber in So Cal cut my hair. However, by stroke of "shear" luck I happen to find Courtney. Not only did she give me one of my favorite cuts ever... I'm coming back to her when I'm ready dye my hair. She's amazing, she listens to what you want and she takes her time. The small talk isn't even awkward... like, I actually wanted to continue talking to someone I didn't know. They even use Aveda products, which I swear by! Couldn't be more thankful for Katelynn! She cuts my hair as well as my kids. She is beyond calm, flexible and reassuring for kids. She first cut my sons hair when he was 1 and has cut it several times since. He isn't a fan but she just works with him and it always turns out great! I went here today for the first time and Vicky was very kind and she really listened to how I like my hair cut she asked questions so she could have it cut just how I wanted & she even told me if I had any problems or didn't like it the next day I could come back and she would fix it (there is no reason for that though my hair looks great!!!) I love Toppers. I've had Vicky and Courtney countless times and they always give me the best haircuts. If I show them a picture, they can replicate it. If I want a small change from the picture, I still get it. They're both talkative and very sweet people. Easy to get along with and always smiling. Now to why it's 4 stars instead of 5. I once didn't request a certain person. I got Loretta. I asked for a classic A-line with swoop bangs. I've had this haircut many times. But instead, I get something that resembles a mushroom cut from the 90's and bangs that are so short they do not swoop and would sometimes stick straight out. This was last summer and I wore a beanie despite the 100 degree weather. If I took off the beanie, people would joke about my hair and try to give me advice with how to cope. I was devastated. I usually don't let a bad haircut ruin my day since it will grow back but this took months to get back to a somewhat decent length to style it. I thought maybe it was just because girl haircuts can be difficult sometimes. So my husband got a haircut from Loretta. It was choppy. It was uneven. It was supposed to be a simple fade to a little longer top and it was the same all around and way too short. He was unhappy with his appearance for weeks. He let his hair grow out pretty far and then wanted a different hairstyle for once in his life. He wanted a long top that he could slick back and short sides. We had three pictures. It was short all over and when she asked if he wanted a part shaved into his head, he said no and she did it anyway. Other than that, she didn't talk. It was also uneven and choppy. He's now let it grow out again and is finally ready to cut it. They tried to give us Loretta again and we said no. Saying no for me is a big deal since I'm an introvert and I always want to please people, but I did it without hesitation because we were both upset after our last haircuts. I would give five stars if Loretta did not work there or at least got trained in how to give a proper haircut. But if you get anyone else that works at Toppers, they will not disappoint and they will give you an amazing haircut and style. Courtney is one of my favorites because of her cheery attitude and personality. read more

At this point Loretta has cut and styled my hair at least five times. Every time she's cut my hair I've left with a flattering, low maintenance style. I am so glad I found her! Today was my first time at Toppers salon in ukiah. I was welcomed by Valerie who I have known from super cuts. She's amazing with color. She did a great job on cutting and coloring my hair. She's friendly professional and an all around wonderful person. The salon is clean and smells nice with the aromatherapy. I plan on going back to this salon again. I always go back and forth between dark hair and highlights but every time I need a change she listens, gives thoughtful suggestions when I need her expertise, and always does a careful job. This is the first time I've been to Toppers. I got an appointment with Loretta, and although I feel a bit bad leaving a negative review, my hair really looks awful. It doesn't look anything like the picture I brought in with me, but worse than that, it is completely crooked and choppy. The right side is significantly shorter than the left, and there is actually a section where there is a chunk of hair missing at the bottom, and then it gets longer again without any blending or layering. I can't imagine what happened there but it is impossible to style without that part showing. So, I guess it's a ponytail for me until I find the time to go somewhere else to get it fixed. read more

I got my hair cut and colored a few weeks ago here and am actually way happier with both the cut and color now that it's had a few weeks to "settle." I wanted some sort of change and I admittedly did a bad job of articulating that and as a result ended up looking a little like an edgy zebra. My cut was cute but it reminded me of my best friend's hair when we were in high school (I graduated in 1999). And again, I did a really bad job of articulating what I wanted so given all that, maybe this review should be for four stars. Being from Los Angeles, I'm used to walking in and telling my sweet LA hairstylist "make me edgy and don't take off too much from the ends" and then walking out looking like a million bucks. I ended up paying the same price I've paid in LA but it was not quite the cut and color I was somehow hoping for. My hairstylist here was VERY nice and kept making sure I liked it and I liked that it was different than my last cut but it wasn't love at first sight. That being said, now that the color has settled down a little and the cut has adjusted itself to my head, I actually like my look quite a bit (still not love, but definitely like). I loved the ambience of the shop and the windows were great for people watching. My stylist made sure my car didn't get marked by the parking enforcement and the shop was very clean. So, anyway,if I go back, I'm planning on bringing a few pictures to better articulate what I want. But I admittedly am wondering if I can fit in a "hair" stop on my next trip to LA. read more

Katelyn is the best! I have now had two separate appointments with her - the first for a last minute cut and Katelyn accommodated me same-day and took me at 5pm so I could finish my workday and still get a fabulous haircut. She listened to what I wanted and gave me an excellent cut. Just today I decided I need a color update and called Toppers to see if they had any stylists that did Bayalage color. Yes, they did! And Katelyn could see me that very afternoon. After greeting Katelyn and showing her some pictures, I spent 2 relaxing, pampered hours in the chair as she did a thorough, meticulous job on my hair. She is a master with hair and it is apparent that she really cares about her clients. She gives a WONDERFUL hair wash and styles quickly and efficiently. My color turned out even better than I had imagined! She was sweet, and talented and an excellent find in Ukiah. Thank you, Katelyn! You will be my hair guru for years to come.
