Ok so I recently bought a house (yay to me) and I needed to do some projects to change and improve some things around it. After a month of living here and working extra to pay for the changes. I requested to have the house locks changed. Placed the order on a Saturday, few businesses messaged me on the Yelp App. Mr. Adam Itay of Top Locksmith was one if 'em. Decent sweet fella, messaged me he'd come by on a Tuesday (since that was a perfect rain free sunny day and me not at work!!) I msg him on Easter Sunday ( darn it! I forgot it was a holiday) and reminded him of Tuesday appointment. He came by around 10-ish and asked me if I needed my locks changed to new hardware, I said okay, showed him the garage key pad that needed to be changed. And he quotes me whopping price of in thousands Erm! Nope! Let's just do the bare minimum shall we? Front door new key lock and garage keypad reset service brought the fee down to $370. Whew what a relief!! Still I think a bit steep but I'll give the man his 5 stars, he was courteous, explained a whole lot, did ask me if I knew the password to previous owner, nope. I waited 20 minutes for the guy to show up and once he showed up and texted me I returned his text he informed me that he already got another job. You want good service keep looking elsewhere. I would rate a 5 on one aspect and a 1 on another aspect, resulting in an average of 3 stars. Firstly on initial quick response and politeness, I would rate 5 with regular communication/calls to informed me of traffic and delays of arrival. The wait was about 40 minutes. This however was downgraded to a 4 after the work took a bit longer than he expected and he was trying to get me to pay more and/or leave immediately without resolving a new problem that arose. I'll bump that back up to a 5 because he called his boss who agreed to come deal with the development although it would be the next day. Maybe that's too nice considering we waited another day? Secondly on transparency of pricing and definition of a working finished proper door lock, I would rate a 0, but can only give a 1, because the locksmith responding would not quote a price or even a price range (nor hourly rate) until he saw the lock. He did say it was a "free estimate", but what he didn't say until after that inspection was that he did charge a $25 service fee for work once I said OK to the estimate! Then after the quote was accepted (I negotiated just not doing one backdoor knob that I didn't need rekeyed) he tried to increase the price after he encountered difficulty and the final result was the front door would not stay properly shut (needed the deadbolt to secure the door). He wanted to be paid and leave immediately although the end result was that a new problem existed which he evidently could resolve, but would not do or even quote until I first paid for the original amount agreed upon despite not getting the original agreed upon total number of properly working deadbolt and locks installed/rekeyed! Basically the work order kept changing as the situation evolved to reduce the agreed upon final locks fixed despite keeping the original price. If I wanted the complete and correct job done that I hoped for it would cost more, but not sure how much more, just whatever I might keep allowing? Only once the owner of the company was on the phone and agreed to come see and fix the problem, did I pay. He did come and fix the problem the next day. He did a similar thing saying "if it is easy I will fix it for free, but if I have to take time to fix it you will have to pay" but didn't say how much. It seems he was able to fix it easily and evidently it was just that the strike plate on the door frame was not aligned, a basic part of proper lock installation!! This should have been done by the original responding locksmith without trying to make me pay more. So in short, this company's business model is to get lots of young workers out there changing a bunch of easy locks fast for quick money, if they encounter a problem that needs basic problem-solving, hold up the customer tell them it will cost more, with a half-done job and you under pressure to renegotiate. They act nice but the business model is not. I had to be insistent, so they will claim I wasn't nice, but I never said a mean word, I just insisted on getting the facts, the proper work done, and paying a fair rate that was agreed upon for work was actually all done. They probably won't admit that their business tactics are a bit shady, they'll try to rely on acting nice, so if your job is easy, good for you all, but if it's a job that requires a little bit extra thought or time, be aware you will have to pay and who knows how much, its whatever you'll cave to. read more

I used Top Locksmith when my deadbolt broke and I decided to replace it with a smart lock and also install a brand new deadbolt / smart lock on my side door. Itay was super responsive - ready to come out within an hour or two. I contacted this company to re-key four locks in my home. I was quoted about $39 per lock. When Adam arrived, he told me it would be $500. I told him no. He offered to lower the price if I paid with cash for Venmo. I also refused. I ended up paying more than $350 with a credit card against my better judgement and should have disputed the charge. Lesson learned. After hiring a different locksmith for another job I needed done, I learned that Adam did not rekey my locks after all and actually broke of my locks and it no longer functions at all.
