worst experience I've ever had... I will definitely not be coming back. I'm not even upset that I didn't pass my test. I'm upset with a customer service. I am upset with the quality of attention that I got the bike that was given to me was not in working condition. I had a two day course the first day. I don't know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn't this. This is the first place I ever tried but when I tell you, the instructors were smoking well in class very unprofessional. I spoke out multiple times that the bike that I had was giving me trouble and I was just told that I have to learn to feel it. I wish I could have recorded my experience, but unfortunately that's not the case with helmets on. It's definitely hard to hear soft-spoken voices. It makes it hard to listen to what they're saying on top of everything. I kept having difficulties on this raggedy Harley bike at some point. I pulled to the side and asked the instructor to please check it. He was very rude and was making it sound like it was just me but when he tried to turn on the bike himself, it would not turn on. He was basically telling me to bang up the equipment for it to work. I saw other people that passed their test, even though they did much worse than me and I absolutely feel it was because I pointed out that the equipment that they gave me was not improper working condition. I was told that I can pay extra to redo the test. I don't think so. I feel like I was taking advantage of. I definitely didn't get what I expected. I do not recommend this place. MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR THIS CLASS OR ANY CLASS! I had a wondeful experience taking this MSF class. I am a person of a small stature that rides a dual sport in my free time. This class offers a wide range of motorcycles, mine had several tiny 125 bikes as well as two Yamaha TWs, two cruiser style bikes, a Ninja 300, CB300F and more. I picked myself a Kawasaki Z125 which is basically a Grom. They allowed everyone to walk up to the bikes and choose which one you wanted. The bike that I CHOSE was very small and easy to maneuver. My only note is it was almost TOO small for me even as a littler woman, so if you go as someone larger maybe DO pick a larger bike. Learning to get comfortable on different types of bikes is part of leaning to ride. The instructors had much consideration for me seeing as I've only ever ridden dirt and dual sport so they kept giving me pointers on how to use a street bike properly. You can leave if you feel uncomfortable, they tell you that. The instructors are on a time limit and everything is timed to go at a pretty quick pace but gives you time to grasp the basic idea of each exercise. Motorcycles are scary, try not to get too in your own head about the specific bike or people watching you, we're all there to learn. I had experience prior yes, but my fiance didn't and he even found the course very informative and plans to go back to top gun as he didn't pass the test. As a smaller woman, I highly recommend this class. They treated me just like everyone else, they were helpful and stern when needed to be. I bought my motorcycle class a bit early because I wanted to be prepared and confident before showing up. I even tried to learn as much as I could ahead of time about riding and safety, just to make the most of the class. When the class finally started, things were okay overall -- I kept to myself and focused on learning the fundamentals. However, the instructor seemed like he didn't really want to be there. His attitude came across as uninterested and impatient. He only went over each lesson once, and when students didn't fully understand, he didn't take the time to explain further or break it down differently. It felt very rushed and impersonal, which made it harder to learn. Unfortunately, I didn't pass the test the first time and was told to get more comfortable with bikes before coming back to retest. I accepted that and planned to practice more before returning. The issue came later when I tried to schedule my retest. I have a very demanding job and work most weekends, so I was trying to find a date that worked with my schedule. When I called a few weeks later, I was pressured into retesting that same week -- even though I had clearly said I needed more time to plan and notify my workplace. I politely declined and said I'd call back when I was ready. A week later, I called again to schedule, only to be told that if I wanted to retest, I'd have to drive all the way out to Bakersfield. And if I couldn't make that, there was nothing they could do because I had supposedly "run out of time." They also made it sound like I didn't have the common courtesy to prioritize their schedule -- when in reality, I was trying to balance being responsible both to my job and my safety as a new rider. Overall, the whole experience was disappointing. Between the lack of care from the instructor, the poor communication, and the unprofessional attitude when it came to scheduling, I honestly wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. If you're serious about learning and want supportive instruction and flexibility, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. read more

Would not reccomend taking your CMSP course through Top Gun. I had previously passed the CMSP through the AV Harley Davidson dealership and was only taking it through Top Gun as the timing was better this time around, it was slightly cheaper and I wanted to have a refresher + the DMV ride test waiver. For some reason my instructor failed me despite me doing the same things I did to pass the same course previously. I was told we were allowed 20 marks on our riding evaluation and he made 21 marks for me. His feedback as to why I failed felt vague and didn't give me much to go off of as far as improving riding technique. Additionally, when I paid the $250 for a retest, the class time I signed up for was changed last minute and I could not attend. I rescheduled, and AGAIN the time was changed after I registered. After that point I was told if I wanted to still retest I'd have to complete the online course again. This was an extremely frustrating process and I'd much rather pay the little extra to do this through a Harley Davidson dealership. read more

First off Id like to say im not one for conversation with strangers. Im a "lone rider" type of guy. But these instructors left an impression on me. Queenie was the energy and wisdom of proper instruction and Dave brought experience and an old school feel to what Id expect a teacher to be. The balance of their styles felt right for me personally to learn most effective. Ive rode 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, scooters, go karts u name it. But never with proper guidance. They went through the basics to make rookie riders comfortable and even taught me/ reminded me of things that I had long forgotten. (I haven't done any riding in about 10 years). Highly suggest if you're even thinking about getting on a motorcycle to take this course. It's worth the $. As Dave stressed many of these techniques can save yourself from injury or accidentally removing yourself from this world or someone else's. On a brighter side, the riding is tons of fun, they give you plenty of time to get comfortable on your learner bike and don't shun you for falling during drills before test time. (I didn't fall but others did and stayed the course once the instructors made sure they were ok). Well I'm all done with this course. I have to say it was quite intimidating never have ridden a motorcycle before. I am so happy I decided to take this course. We get a lot of riding time in and some very good safety pointers that give me a strong foundation to becoming a confident rider. If your interested in becoming a M/C rider. I highly recommend this class. My instructors name was Charli. Now I've read some other reviews and i can see where complaints come from. I can see the way the world has changed and people have become EXTRA sensitive. Bottom line is she is very passionate about her job. There will be no favoritism, no pats on the back and no trophies for everyone in the class. You will NOT get through this course if you are not locked on, safe and serious. You may be serious, you may be safe, but if you cannot perform the exercises and keep up with the rest of the class you will and should be failed. If you cant complete this BEGINNERS course.. you should seek private lessons. What confuses me with some of the other reviews is, people felt like they were picked on and failed too soon with little reason or proof. In my class i could not believe how long it took to let some people go. I can only believe there is a system that instructors have to confidently justify letting students go. If you are a beginner, what she teaches you will build into your riding habit. They have advanced courses with other instructors so do check them out - for ex. James offers Canyon Rides, and track instruction (I personally have not taken these courses with James yet, but I am planning to). Note 1: they send you a link to booklet in PDF materials when you sign up - many times it goes into your spam folder. Once you sign online, do check out your spam folder. I recently took this course with Steve and Chelsea at Palmdale High and they were super helpful. I've never rode a motorcycle before so I was kind of nervous but they did a great job! You start by practicing the motions before you even turn the bike on which takes the scariness out. Also there's a manual they send you weeks before your class which explains everything you'll be covering in the training. The class portion was on zoom which was perfect and the riding part was at the school's parking lot. Took this course and passed this weekend (5/14-16). I've just got back into riding and not only needed my M1 licenses, but also refresher on riding. The course was two online classes via Zoom and two days of riding instruction. On the last day, you have a 50 question written test and then a riding evaluation that you must pass successfully in order to pass the course. Also, class times fill up quickly so if you are considering this you should sign up right away. I had to wait 4 weeks before my class. I am sincerely grateful for the course - it was a fast paced, structured course and I learned a great deal and improved my riding skills immensely. I feel much more confident on the road. The instructors (Charli, James & Elliot) all know their stuff and sincerely want the students to learn. Not everyone in my class passed, so if you have never ridden a motorcycle before, you should consider getting in some slow speed practice before hand in my opinion. We were lucky as the weather was mild and overcast, so no issues with a hot sun. The course is taught on the top College of the Canyons (I think they offer other locations as well, but this is where I took the class) parking lot. Nothing negative really to say. It was a bit difficult for me to hear sometimes, with a helmet on, face masks, and 10-11 motorcycles making noise, but I would just pull up to the instructor and get clarification on what they wanted me to do. Lastly, I got a reimbursement from Santa Clarita Harley for this course as I purchased my Harley from them. Completed the course this passed weekend and I have nothing but good things to say about it. First and foremost the instructors were absolutely amazing. Full disclaimer- I passed the riding test. I was in a group that, due to weather issues was unable to test on Sunday per the usual schedule. Charli and James came out, on a Friday and made the time to get us warmed up and tested. They really went above and beyond to be there for us. If you have any desire to learn to ride, this is the place to do it. They have a system that breaks riding down into super manageable pieces (I wish I had learned in this setting!), and makes it safe and simple. **Pro Tip! You will ride rain or shine. If there is any chance of rain for your class, BUY A RAIN SUIT, even just a cheap walmart one. I've never ridden a motorcycle and I wasn't sure what to expect in the class but James made me feel very comfortable. Our training was at a range where James gave me and the rest of the student riders great instructions. He was patient and understanding whenever I would make a mistake. His instructions were direct and clear. He was able to let me know what to do and what not to do in all circumstances. He was able to keep calm and guide me through the process. I never felt incompetent at any point while he was directing me and the rest of the group. I truly enjoyed the class and learned a lot as I was having lots of fun at the same time. I started on dirt bikes aged 10yrs old, fast forward a bit and I find myself just turned 50 yrs old with 40 years of motorcycle riding experience and never having had an accident. After riding in So Cal on a British International driving license with motorcycle endorsement for the past 25 years, last November I decided to take the TopGun CMSP class to get my M1 endorsement on my CA DL. With Charli as my instructor I had a great experience, brushed up on some good riding techniques, unlearned some bad habits and passed the class. That same weekend 2 of my friends were both killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in Temecula . It rocked my world to the point that I decided to become a motorcycle safety instructor and try to give back to the bike community by training new riders. So now I am one of the local instructors here at TopGun - to put it simply I am extreemly passionate about motorcycle safety, and my goal is to give you the best safety instruction I can, over your weekend of rider training. I have nothing but GREAT things to say about my experience taking the 3-day California Motorcycle Safety Course in Santa Clarita with Top Gun. I took it this last weekend, 2/28-3/1/2020 at COC with Charlie and Elliott who were BOTH outstanding teachers albeit with very different personalities. I'm not gonna lie -- I was a little scared of Charlie on the first night but turns out she just cares, knows her stuff and wants the BEST for all of us riders! She's my peeps now, for sure. As promised, we were taught measurable and demonstrable skills. In fact, I had NEVER ridden a motorcycle other than a dirt bike and that, not so many times so this was a big move up for me. That said - do NOT expect to hit the streets after this class IF you're a total noobie - you will still need plenty of practice before doing so (I already bought my own cones on the Zon so I can visit many, many parking lots on the weekends!) I can NOT imagine having started riding (or those who have dared to ride the streets) without this class - you are really just taking your life in your own hands without the skills and lessons learned here. Charlie was fantastic - very attentive and always gave me personalized feedback and critique when needed (and she probably held back a few times, too!). She was fair across the board with all riders. Yes, I was the only chick in my riding group and NO, I felt neither favored nor singled out (I see many comments from chicks to this effect; get over yourselves). Charlie is in THE right place doing a thing she loves and ALL of her students are blessed with the passion, insight and knowledge she has obviously gained over a lifetime of riding! So -- specific experiences -- I lit the paper on fire trying to take notes as quickly as Charlie talked during the class sessions but that's ok - writing is how I get it in my head. Even when no one else was writing! If writing is how you learn too, take paper with you. Give yourself grace. I personally got frustrated on the Emergency/Quick-Stop lessons but took myself out of line for a count-to-ten and deep breath as I know my own limits. You should know yours, too! Thank you, Elliott, for walking away (LOL)! I loved the "swerving" exercises. Refer to the aforementioned cones I bought from the Zon - will be practicing more on my own for sure. Day 3 (Day 2 of riding) was harder because I was physically tired from riding the day before. They give you much, much time actually ON the bike which is great but if you're not ready physically - you'll feel it, for sure. My forearms hurt for a few days after holding in the clutch for the 2 classes but hey - get used to it! Not unsurmountable! The mock "go play in traffic" set up at the end of class was useful as well as hilarious. Think back to your days in Pre-School where we did the same on tricycles! So thankfully, I passed the course though such status came with the comment that my passing had been "very close to call" (gulp) so I beat myself up for the rest of the day. I eventually got over it and realized that the class was just one step of many I need to take in learning to be a great and safe rider. I instead opted for focusing on being grateful for the experience and exposure I was given to this class and great teachers and to take all that I had learned from them and determined myself to practice, practice, practice many, many hours before taking on a street with other vehicles! It is clear that the staff only cares about each student so whatever your result will be, accept it with grace, too, and do what you need to do to keep learning! Side note: after the class, I spent many hours "You Tubing" for videos related to beginner riding and the HUGELY IMPORTANT Counter Steering which I did not 100% grasp in class. Now I "get it"! (Warning - don't watch every YouTube video you find - many were created by complete morons whom I can now identify just from what I learned having taken this class!) Also - if any of my classmates read this - a huge shout out to Aiden - KEEP LEARNING! You touched my heart doing this so you could ride with your Dad! And to the guy who never touched a motorcycle before (I'm sorry I didn't catch your name) - you did AWESOME! Kudos to you both and to all whom I had the pleasure of learning and riding with! So as an intermediate rider I went into this course for the insurance discount and the M license. But I was really surprised!! Took the course last weekend and passed!!!!! I learned a ton! There was so much that others had taught/told me over the years that was straight garbage. This class taught me more in 3 days than I had learned the whole time I was riding. I highly recommend even if you've been riding for years! The instructors were great! Very friendly and understanding. They were patient and helped in any way they could. Every question that was asked was answered. They took the time to watch and observe as you rode then gave adequate feedback and explained how to do better. They went over the source material and helped explain the ins and outs on riding. The instructor made it easy to follow along and grasp what was taught I definitely recommend this course to all riders! Did the course with Charli and Joel. 100% ignore the 1 star idiots who think they know better than the instructors. I hadn't even started a motorcycle before this course and 2 days of riding later I'm more than confident enough to ride in public streets. You need ZERO knowledge before coming in, one person in my course had never used a manual transmission and was riding with us within an hour. Seriously, sign up and go to the course. A couple words of advice: Ignore the riders with experience pretending they know better they don't and will set you up for failure, pay attention to the schedule when you sign up it's 3 days of classes, ask all the questions you will not look dumb nor will you be made to feel dumb ASK YOUR QUESTIONS. I am an experienced rider who's M1 endorsement lapsed so I decided to take this course in order to waive the DMV skills test. The instructors for my training course were Charli and Elliott and I was very impressed by their passion and professionalism they exhibited throughout the training course. They truly want you to have the have the skills needed to effectively handle a motorcycle in a safe manner on the street. Their passion for riding is why they do what they do and they really want others to have the passion of riding that they have. They even taught an old dog new tricks. I took the course with Charlie in October (80-90 degree weather; no rain) and it was a great experience. I learned the basics of riding a motorcycle, it made me a safer automobile driver, and it provided even greater life lessons. We even had some laughs. Ok, a lot of laughs (both Charlie and I competing for the title of head comedian). Charlie: An amazing instructor who is passionate about teaching and motorcycles. She will bring in her own personality and try to make the class more lighthearted when possible. You will learn about the motorcycle, she will give more advance riders more advanced pointers, 100% badass, comical, kind, and very calm around novice riders who have no idea what they're doing (at the start of the course at least). She really went out of her way to help me where I was struggling but also allow me to struggle (eg learn on my own) when she didn't feel her input would be productive. I've glanced at one-two of the negative reviews. I can very honestly say that my experience was very positive and I would recommend Charlie without any reservations whatsoever. I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice by taking the course with anyone else. Take into consideration: - this is traditionally a very rigid/strict course. A minute late means you've failed the course. - If an instructor failed you, they're looking out for your best interest. They may have just saved your life. Charlie works really hard to make a full weekend of instruction educational, safe, and a bit more fun allowing complete strangers to bond/form friendships over their interest for riding. Again, this is otherwise traditionally a rather strict course. If she failed you, she's making a judgement call. It's not a personal vendetta. read more
