There are a ton of options, but it can take a while to find that right one that just meshes with your own tastes. You want that mixture of great service, price, and ease of access. I've been going to the same place to get my haircut for the last several years. Due to an unexpected emergency at the shop, I had to scramble to find a new place to get a haircut while under a deadline. I booked an appointment for Scissors & Scotch as it had great reviews online. When you walk in the first thing you encounter is a bar. Scissors & Scotch has a bit of an unusual model that I didn't expect. They work on a subscription basis so it is closer to joining a gym then just being a regular at at barber/salon. Depending upon what level you join at increases the type of alcohol you have access to (e.g. basic = draft beers, higher levels = top shelf liquor). It is kind of a nice idea, and the vibe is one that is unique to shops I've been to. The haircut I got was pretty good and the stylist I got was personable. Overall all of the staff were very welcoming. So given these positive things, why am I overall giving a relatively poor rating? Well, I had an appointment schedule and didn't actually get my haircut started until an hour after my booked time. I have kids and I was fitting in my haircut in on my way home from work. When I have an appointment, I need that to to actually happen. I don't have a lot of free time between work and family, so no matter now nice the trappings I don't want to sit there for an hour just spinning my wheels. I do need a beer on my way home from work, I need something that works with my busy schedule. The cost was also relatively high. It made me feel like I had to consume the include drink to remotely justify the price. That just didn't sit well with me at the end of the day. I can see for some guys it being worth the money to join the program and drop $100+ monthly for a haircut. For me the cost wasn't worth it (I'm a pretty straightforward cut). Again, the thing that really gave me a negative impression was the wasting an hour of my time.

That's how I ended up at Dapper Gents, at the beginning of its second week of beard trims following Covid-19 restrictions. Those who have seen my old "Suburbanite in STL" list may remember how important parking and approach are to me. If you have similar concerns, then you may like to know that street parking is not too difficult. In the canyon of Washington Avenue, my "ParkLouie" app was rather slow, so I fed my charge card into the parking meter, no problem. And, if you're looking for the correct entry to Dapper Gents among the multiple doors of 1000 Washington, you go toward the entry "east" and middle of the block, not the one near the cigar place "west" at the corner of 11th St. Michael A. did a great job! Friendly, attentive to direction, fade cut (and beard trim) in the top tier of all cuts ever. Covid-19 concerns? All staff and clients wore masks, mine removed only for the beard trim. He then charged the full $80 no-show fee, and when I said I'd dispute it, he argued I had the appointment time wrong rather than acknowledge the repeated wait or the promise he'd made. The haircut itself is fine. The time management and the way he handles a legitimate complaint are not worth $80.
