The path of life leads through many changes, and mine includes a changing cast of hair-cutting professionals. So it seemed a perfect birthday quest to search for a new barber, one specializing in beards. That's how I ended up at Dapper Gents, at the beginning of its second week of beard trims following Covid-19 restrictions. Those who have seen my old "Suburbanite in STL" list may remember how important parking and approach are to me. If you have similar concerns, then you may like to know that street parking is not too difficult. In the canyon of Washington Avenue, my "ParkLouie" app was rather slow, so I fed my charge card into the parking meter, no problem. And, if you're looking for the correct entry to Dapper Gents among the multiple doors of 1000 Washington, you go toward the entry "east" and middle of the block, not the one near the cigar place "west" at the corner of 11th St. Michael A. did a great job! Friendly, attentive to direction, fade cut (and beard trim) in the top tier of all cuts ever. Covid-19 concerns? All staff and clients wore masks, mine removed only for the beard trim. I cam here when I was on my way to my brothers wedding in October. It was the first (and only) time I had a professional haircut during the last year of covidland. I got a haircut and beard trim (honestly I don't have much hair) so look at some of these less follicly challenged individuals for better reviews. 1) Covid response measure - they did a great job-- masks for everyone when possible, temperature check at the door. No complaints-- in a situation that is honestly a bit risky, they went out of their way to make it as safe as possible. 2) my stylist-- honestly, I don't remember his name-- he was great. Enough conversation to keep things moving without trying to go in depth on any particular topic. 3) Decor -- the place felt very masculine. Exposed brick, leathers, and wood-- a nice assortment of products I would have browsed in more earnestness in a different time. 4) Outcome-- the haircut and beard trim were flawless. My facial hair lays pretty flat and can sometimes be a challenge for barbers and he had no trouble at all. 5) Pricing -- cheap for chicago, probably on the higher end for St. Louis but it was a great value in my mind. I'll return if I am ever running through STL and need a trim. read more

UPDATE.....you're not going to like this.. Well, I when back to see Carrie to get my hair back in shape. First, I'm still liking the decor and then"feel" of the shop. Second, I like that Carrie followed up on how I liked my haircut and how it worked out for me. We went over some minor tweaks and she got to work. So after she finished cutting and trimming got is washed (best part, I could fall asleep. LOL), then back to the chair for adding product and styling. Here's the part you're not gonna like... So, after she finish she had me look it over in the mirror. I couldn't believe it, another Awesome haircut! I know, you're asking yourself, so what am I not going to like? I (Johnnie) decided to grow my facial hair this autumn. I'd never had a beard or mustache. I let it all grow out for almost seven weeks, then booked an appointment at Dapper Gents to get it straightened up. I'm looking for work and need to look really sharp in a suit and tie. I booked Brooke for a beard trim and haircut. Prior to my appointment, I asked my wife to find a pic online of a good, professional cut and beard, and she texts me a picture of David Beckham looking like champagne and money. I said "Babe, they're barbers, not magicians!" Then I went over there. Brooke is very sweet and professional and a good conversationalist. She is adroit with the clippers and the scissors-over-comb, and she made my messy mop of hair look like C-suite money in no time. Next she tamed my beard and trimmed it beautifully. I felt like I looked like a bum when I went in there, but now I feel like an executive. She applied a great smelling beard oil and took care to do a final once- over of the whole job, clipping here and there. Oh she also trimmed my eyebrows. MOST IMPORTANT PART: When my wife (Lovie) got home from work, she wanted to attack me and throw me into bed! She loves the look. I will be back. You should go there too. read more

This place is incredible unlike any other barbershop I have been to. The space is magnificent and the products are top notch. I have never seen this much class and sophistication in one place. The hot towel shaves are incredible and you literally don't want to get out of the chair when it's time to. This place is amazing. Carrie did and absolutely phenomenal job and I will definitely be a return customer. The entire leather lounge vibe is very cozy and inviting. I got there an hour early due to snow and did not mind waiting. Complimentary coffee and a fridge of complimentary drinks are readily available as is nearly every beard accessory this world has to offer. The amount of time Carrie took to make sure my beard was perfectly edged and faded is a testimony to the craft they are selling that this isn't just a barbershop....this is a legit grooming lounge. Upon arriving you are greeted by hellos and smiling faces, there's a plush leather sofa in the seating area and you are offered you choice of drink while you wait. I personally go to Darrell and he has to be one of if not the best barber in Saint Louis, I have trusted him with the care of my beard and from grooming tips to razor sharp edging he provides is second to known. Living in the city there are so many small businesses to explore. While walking down Washington Ave. one night with my fiancé I happen to notice a new place open. Curious, we went inside. Earlier that day we had tried to make an appointment at Blades to get my fiancés hair cut but had no openings so, we were pleasantly surprised to find out this little gem was a barber shop. A woman named Hillary cut his hair and did an amazing job, best hair cut he has gotten since we moved here. They also had appetizers and drinks which was nice. They also sell some men's clothing. I've been coming here for my haircuts whenever I'm in town for about the last year. I was looking to start wearing my hair in a "hipper" fashion, and Dapper Gents was just the place to help me do it. While their rate might be a bit above what you're used to paying for a haircut, it's worth every penny in this case. I've typically seen Katie (though, thanks to hasty appointment scheduling, I've seen Kaylie once); both of them have done excellent jobs every time I've gone in. They keep files on your appointments so you can keep track of what you like and don't like; something that I appreciate as I attempt to figure out exactly what hairstyle I want long term. The ambiance of the place is very nice. Manly without feeling macho or insecure. They have a wide array of high end grooming products and mens fashion. I haven't bought anything from them, but they seem to have pretty decent brands in stock. My one idea is that they could use a bit more choice in pomades (they carry Uppercut, which isn't really very popular amongst those serious about their pomade choice). read more

Born and raised in Asia, I have lived all over the US including San Fran, city of Angels, "Mistake by the Lake," and of course Saint Louis. For many years I just resigned myself to the idea that the best haircut I would ever get would be back in the motherland in Asia; and I don't have that kind of money to fly back just for a haircut. I could never find a consistent stylist who could deliver, partly because Asian hair isn't easy to do. Hilary exceeded expectations; EVERY time. This isn't your $15 haircut. It's worth much more than what they charge, also, because they're all really nice people and really care about their work. Don't waste your time. Treat yourself. It's worth every penny. The store is really laid out well and has some interesting stuff. Razors are very expensive, upwards of $100.00+. Three female staff members all talking socially to one guy. The other customers in the shop evidentially left to their own devices. Never did get an explanation on why the razors were so expensive. They came from London, so maybe that's why. This place is as good as it gets! The large space is beautifully decorated and the atmosphere is great! Today was my first time here. And as soon as I walked through the door, I was offered a beverage. My hair was cut by Hillary. If I remember correctly, she told me that she has 5 years of experience under her belt. She does a fantastic job in making sure you get what you pay for. Hillary took her time when cutting my hair while also asking me questions on what I wanted. When I wasn't sure, she gave advice on what she thought would look best. I find it appealing that they keep notes on how they cut your hair. I find that to be helpful, because I'm positive that whenever I return, they will know exactly what I want. After the cut, she laid a towel on my eyes, rinsed my hair out, and took out the straight razor to clean up the fine details. And after that, there was even a short complimentary shoulder massage! I really enjoy this barbershop and I'm sure this is the place that I am going to come back to, time after time. The quality of their workmanship is amazing, and everything about the place screams "Dapper." I must also point out that this isn't just a barber shop. They also sell clothing, shoes, and accessories, as well as shaving supplies (shaving cream, straight razors, safety razors), and grooming supplies! I can't wait to come back and see their selection as well as get my shoes shined! I really recommend this place! If you can spare $39.00 for a tailored haircut, do it. Neat place. The decor is masculine and cool. The staff were friendly, attractive, and good at their jobs. Before the shave, there is a lounge area available equipped with leather sundries available for purchase. Most of the items (shoes, shoulder bags, watches, etc.) were out of my price range. In fact, most of the items were not in my wheelhouse to begin with, but there were cool things to look at before the service. Katie, my barber of the moment, offered a complimentary drink. I looked around but saw no booze, prepare for sodas. The window faces Washington Avenue and provides a cool spot to people watch as Katie lets loose with her shears. My shave took about 25 minutes and cost about $45. With the full beard she wiped away, I was happy to pony up. I won't be a regular here, but I will recommend it for special occasions. I called to get a same day appointment, but they were full. After taking my # they called me back in a couple hours after they had a cancellation which was great. They were right on time when I showed up and gave me great haircut. It's trendy but conservative enough for work. More expensive than most haircuts I've had, but worth it. There is a saying "One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch" unfortunately that was my experience. My normal stylist was not available so I had to go with another stylist "Michael". I had an appointment set, prepaid for my requested services. I receive a text from Michael the night before my appointment saying that he would not be available do to a Family emergency. He would assist me with getting another stylist to do the services, I ended up having to go to Dapper Gents to try to work things out, I was told Michael would be able to provide the services that next day. In speaking to Michael he advised he could provide one of the services I had prepaid for, Huh. I asked why? never to be given and answer. I think this was very unprofessional and gives this establishment a Black Eye. It was very unprofessional and in poor taste. Next time I will just have to wait for my Stylist "Carrie" who is the Bomb. Customer Service is what drives businesses, be careful who you let represent your Brand. read more

I was recommended Dapper Gents by a buddy that had just gone there recently.
