Frustrated and disappointed. I hired Top Ace Fencing and Carpentry to remove my old backyard fence and install a new one. A four-person Hispanic crew completed the job in one day. They did a phenomenal job, and I have nothing but excellent praise for their work. So, I felt good about hiring the same company to refresh my old first-floor and second-floor porches. This turned out to be one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a contractor The contractor and I had a major disconnect on the amount of crown molding to be replaced. I explained three times that I wanted crown molding around the top of the porch on the first floor replaced. The contractor did not write the contract correctly to include this. I trusted the contractor, therefore not noticing the discrepancy. I didn't take the measurements. I wouldn't know if the contractor wrote an incorrect contact or not. I depend on the contractor for accuracy. The contractor's measurements were inaccurate, and the crown molding was short. The contractor decided not to replace the second-floor porch's ceiling beadboards. He did not discuss this with me. The work was supposed to begin on March 26. The contractor did not contact me regarding the funds transfer so that he could purchase materials and order parts. I texted him on March 23rd to inquire. He requested half of the cost and the rest upon job completion. Due to the lack of due diligence, the contractor texted me that the parts would arrive on March 27th, and his crew would begin work that same day. Later, I received a text from the contractor that the material for the porches would arrive on March 29th instead due to parts availability. A partial delivery was made and placed on the sidewalk in front of my home. That was negligence and carelessness for the company where the material was purchased. The contractor should have also left delivery instructions. On April 4th, the contractor texted me that the remaining materials should have arrived. The contractor assured me that work would begin work on April 12th. On April 12th, the contractor texted me that his crew would arrive on Sunday, April 13th and that he would drop off the railing on April 12th. The crew did not come on Sunday. Monday, April 14th, arrived, and so did one employee and worked for approximately three days before he stopped showing up. On April 22 after no work, I contacted the contractor and asked him when work would begin again on my project. He replied that he thought that work was ongoing but that he would get back to me shortly. The contractor texted me back to say the employee license had expired, and he went to Florida to renew them. The contractor apologized for not knowing that. I said okay but what does that mean for me? The contractor said the young man should return to work tomorrow. With other assurances promised and missed the contractor ended up finishing the project himself beginning intermittently around April 25th until completion on May 20th. April 24th came and went. No workers. The contractor said he would coordinate with his main crew, who did my fence, to finish the work. I informed him I would check things on May 25th since I would not return to town until May 24th. On May 25th I found that there were gaps in the staining of the porches between the wood planks. The contractor told me that the stain wouldn't roll down the sides because my wood floors were old. A brush would have gotten between the wood planks. I seriously doubted this and contacted another more established contracting company who informed me that whether the wood was old or new, the stain had to be painted with a brush or sprayed to get between the planks. He said most contractors spray it. I relayed this to the contractor and said I wanted it corrected. The flashing against the house was still exposed, as it had been painted previously. He stripped it off. The PVC railing still had paper or something still stuck on it. He got the stain on my house, which I could have made a fuss about, but I'm planning to re-paint the house soon. But not being careful about that is sloppy and poor work. All of this was completed today, May 28th. To his credit, he found an issue with the original construction of my porch on the lower level and corrected it. He explained it to me, which made no sense as a layperson, but I could appreciate that. However, since it took 74 days to complete a porch project and we had to point out the number of corrections to the contractor, I cannot recommend this company for this type of work. I genuinely wish this young man much success, especially when he can pay attention to small details, perfect his technique to eliminate sloppy mistakes, and hire more qualified people. read more
