I am usually the person who turns one trip into five. I want to see everything, stop everywhere and…read moresqueeze every possible experience out of a place. The Inn at Moonlight Beach somehow made me want to stay put. The room itself felt like part of the retreat. The bed was absolutely scrumptious, our private deck had a distant ocean view and space for yoga, and the soaking tub with flowers and bath salts made staying in feel like an experience. I loved that nothing felt like standard hotel luxury. The details are personal, creative and unexpected. I painted, journaled, picked lettuce and herbs from the biodynamic garden, and after a couples massage we relaxed with a foot soak while watching a Great Horned Owl in the garden. Breakfast was also much more substantial than expected, with fresh juice, chia yogurt, eggs, avocado, fruit, nuts and banana bread delivered in a picnic basket. We added salmon and were full until late afternoon. There is plenty to do nearby, but that is almost beside the point. Between the gardens, beautiful rooms, the creativity station with flower pressing and dish garden making, the lounge library, all the healthy food and quiet creative experiences, the Inn feels like a true oasis. For someone who usually measures a trip by how much I can fit into it, one of the best parts of this one was not leaving.

Enjoyed four great nights at Crone's Cobblestone Cottage. I hesitate to call it a Bed & Breakfast…read morebecause it was so much more. We had access to the entire first floor of a beautifully decorated historical home that will be 100 years old next year. The Mission Hills neighborhood was close to everything we wanted and needed -- shopping, parks, dining, beaches. But I must say my favorite part was chatting with Joan Crone during breakfast. A fascinating woman with an artist's love for all things simple and beautiful. Her art pieces on "plenty" and "small" challenged me to examine my definition of happiness. Was not expecting a spiritual connection on the trip, but happy to have found it. Thank you Joan.

Shaded by a sprawling pepper tree and sheltered by ranks of ferns, it is an oasis, complete with a porch swing and meditation garden, in an already quiet neighborhood. The Mission Hills business district is an easy ten-minute walk away, along streets with more nicely kept-up bungalows. From there, you can easily bus to Balboa Park and the Zoo in a half-hour or - with Joan's guidance - make a fun sightseeing trek down the hillside to the trolley and on the downtown and the harbor. At the end of the day, there are a number of very satisfying restaurants where you can relax and eat well before the peaceful walk home. Joan was very respectful of our privacy and our touristic initiatives. We, on the other hand, started conversations over breakfast that we would only reluctantly break off to make our way to the day's objective. Whether it involved geographical points of interest as a long-time San Diego resident, the arts and photography -- her area of training, Craftsman architecture and design or recent books we've read, there was never a dull moment. She encouraged us to look over books from her extensive library, including the charming "Little Free Library" built in the image of the Cottage and located right outside. We wholeheartedly recommend Crone's Cobblestone Cottage as a place to stay while visiting San Diego!
