If Covid is the reason that started, that needs to be changed. Even just for 5-6 small tables would suffice. to charge restaurant style pricing for pick up order is a bit much.. even in Torrance! What a disappointment! Got there on a Friday PM at about 6:15.We discovered that it was takeout only. We asked the cashier if there was anywhere that we could go and eat the food. He said he wasn't sure, but there might be a park down the street. We never found a park. The food, I would say the rice and beans reminded me of good school cafeteria food. We "found" Tom's during the pandemic and had been excited to find the "original" Tito's flavors. At the time, Tito's had been closed anyway, so we drove from Culver City to Torrance, and under the various shutdown protocols, knew that Tom's was only operating as a takeout window. With that said, at the time, the price was right because Tito's had already begun to over-inflate their prices, and had changed their recipe. It was worth the drive! But fast forward: Today is 12/31/25 and I was in the area. Had already planned on Tacos from a Culver City location for NYE takeout, but decided to see if Tom's was open while I was down there. I jumped on Yelp for the phone number and found a picture of menu from 4 months ago. I called and placed my order over the phone, a little surprised that I was given a total that was significantly more than my mental math. But it made sense when I arrived and saw the CURRENT menu. YIKES! I know, everything is going up... but I'm not really feeling that Tom's vs Tito's is a financial difference anymore. And for this trip, it was takeout anyway, but I was disappointed that they are still operating as a takeout window. It's actually very rare that I just end up in the Torrance area, and though I would absolutely drive down to eat at Tom's, it's not really convenient to drive down for takeout. As for the food, Mom enjoyed her taco but feels like something was missing- she couldn't describe what. The chips are on point. The salsa is delicious. The service is simple and efficient. Price points are competitive and there is a parking shortage due to the nearby stores....I don't love or hate. On a day when was craving crunchy tacos, I decided to give Tom's Tacos a try since it has great reviews. I was expecting the tacos to be similar to Tito's Tacos. I drove up to the spot and found that it's take out only. I was greeted by the cashier with a friendly hello and I placed my order for one taco of each, beef, chicken, and kalua pork, each with cheese. I can't comment on the ambiance of the place as it is take out only. I got my order in about five minutes and made my way to the car. Ugh, this is only the third review I've ever done, and I think it's the first bad one. I feel bad, but hey, I'm just trying to give some feedback. I want to point out first that I see other reviews complaining that this is not authentic... Could you all not tell that by looking at the photos and the cheddar cheese? Clearly, you should not be expecting authentic, you should be expecting this specific style of crunchy taco. They get extra stars for very, VERY great customer service. I can't express that enough. Plus, the service was fast, and it was very clean in there. If it wasn't for those positive aspects, I would have given this a legitimate one star. I wish I could give more stars just for that stuff, but this cannot be a four-star review. The issues really are with the food. I will say, great portion size, and great prices. The first main issue, which some people might think is dumb, but I think is very reasonable, is that I have never ever heard of or had chili cheese fries that have actual semi-authentic chili on them with actual meat chunks (please hear me out). When we think of chili cheese fries, we think of the crappy chili brick, which I love very much, and that's what it looked like in the photos. The meat portions in the chili were generous, but they had almost kind of a gamey taste. That is from using cuts that are too cheap. Also, these are in the $11 dollar range, and that's probably because of the meat. I'd pay the same price just to have the chili brick version. I knew when they said my order would take 8-9 minutes that the fries would be undercooked. I've worked the frier many times and it takes 8 minutes just to get a good fry, especially on a thick crinkle cut, so how are you going to fully cook the fry, package it up, and bag it all up in 8 minutes, when that's how long it takes just to fry the darn fry? Well, you might have par-fried the fries, maybe that's how you do it. Well then, if that were the case, then there would be no excuse for my fries having been undercooked. You all know that raw potato fry taste and texture. The rice had fallen to pieces, but the flavor was there. The beans were just fine, pretty good even. They tasted exactly how I expected, and I was fine with that. By far the biggest thing that I did not like was the red salsa. It's another example of changing something that we all know and love when it doesn't need to be changed. It looks like so many other salsas that we are familiar with and like, but they put some sort of seasoning/spice in there that gives it an extremely off-putting taste. So I feel duped lol. Most people, when they go to a place like this for the first time, it's because they see something familiar in the food items, they are looking for a specific thing they already know they like. I don't want the wheel reinvented on my basic red salsa. I saved the tacos for last because not much to say. They do not meet the price point at all. They are around $5 after taxes and they are low to mid-level crunchy tacos, that's just what they are. They should be $3.50. A mid to high level crunchy taco should be $5-6. Though, this pricing issue exists at most places, after the artificial inflation from Covid. You can see on their menu that before Covid they had more realistic taco prices. I spent $25 before tip on two taco plate and chili cheese fries. And I also know from other restaurant owners just how mad SOME of them can get that customers post this and don't go directly to them with the issue so that they can fix it. Well, that went really bad for me in the past, so that's why I don't do that. Some restaurant owners can't handle any criticism (to be fair, I'd probably be that way too, I'm a baby about that stuff haha). And I don't really post it ever either, but this time I felt the need to. Like I said, I've only posted two times before this my entire life. I'm sad because I wish this was what I thought it was, I'd be hitting it up probably once a week for my work lunch. read more

Small spot located in a strip mall that specializes in tacos dorados. All orders come with free chips and salsa here. The people here are friendly and you order from a window that's connected to the outside of the restaurant. I ordered one crunchy taco with cheese as well as a bean and cheese burrito. The flavors were good and the fried items had a nice crunch to them. The salsa is definitely close and well the flavors of the food to the other place that everybody obviously compares it to. This place first got on my radar because I read somewhere that they are affiliated with Tito's Tacos. Exactly how I am not 100% sure but I think it has something to do with being in the same family and this place broke off or something. The similarities are obvious including the prices, ordering style, and flavors. Definitely if you're craving the crunchy fried style tacos down in the South Bay this is a great option. I have been a fan of ToM's TaCos since their location in Anaheim at Beach and Ball. Having moved to OC it was fantastic to have a childhood restaurant that you loved close by. And in OC the had taquitos. Another huge plus. The family here is just a blessing , especially the son Garrett. Loyal kitchen staff. Tom's has delicious pork/ Kailuah tacos. Had heard about this place for many, many years and finally decided to give it a try. We did not think it lived up to the hype. The individual tacos are a bit pricey for a take-out joint and we found them to be bland. They were fried nicely though, and not greasy. The salsa had a lot of herby flavor that reminded us of Italian rather than Mexican seasoning (maybe Mexican oregano). The super nachos were tasty and plentiful. Kind of like chili cheese fries except with chips...but I wouldn't go back just for that. Service was good. However, there is nowhere to sit and wait if you order in person. I've been going here when it was a Tito's Tacos in Orange County, I continued when it changed names, and I still go here every chance I get. I used to think it was a great, secret Tito's alternative, but now that I've had both recently, Tom's is so much better. All I can say is if you like Tito's and don't like the lines, you'll getter a better version and get out faster.
