What a prize! I was driving east through Arizona to Colorado and just couldn't drive anymore. When I arrived in Cortez, CO I decided I would stop. I looked on Google for hotels, but all the listings (commercial ads) were $90+ so I pulled into a place that the place with the sign that said, "Historic Hotel, Low Rates, Free Wifi". The office staffer, Connie, was amazingly nice. She gave me a "National Park Pass" discount of $10 so my room was under $70. Price is nice, but the room was truly "historic" AND very clean. Queen bed with lots of room to walk around it and a large bathroom. Plus the Wifi was lightening fast. I download all my photos from the Grand Canyon without so much as a slow down. I'd like to come stay here as a weekend destination get away; too bad its 1400 miles from my home. read more

Given the reviews here and on the other sites, I was expecting a well above average motel. But it appears there was a recent change in ownership and, with those ownership changes, came changes in hospitality and the guest experience. I stayed here in August 2019, which judging by past reviews, was shortly after the change in ownership. Check-in was alright and I was directed to a room in the front of the property. When I pulled up to my room, a staff member doing work on the came up to me and asked for my room key so he could turn on the AC and make sure the room was ready...okay. This might just be my New York paranoia talking, but I gave the room a thorough inspection when I got inside. The room was a 50s motel room, which was about what I expected. Furniture was dated, but it was clean. The internet password was not posted prominently and required me to read the fine print in the guide. Most hotels post the wifi password prominently and don't expect you to spend 15 minutes looking all over the room for it. Once I got that settled, the room was generally quiet and comfortable. The next morning, renovation work was going on pretty early in the morning. Thankfully, I wanted an early start anyway, so I wasn't bothered. This property worked for the night, but I'm not sure I'd return. Independent motels are always a gamble and, unfortunately, this one didn't live up to the past reviews. read more

Stay away. Regardless of price, this place is of no value. Room was small and dirty. Mattress was old, torn, and showed evidence of insect droppings. Toilet, filthy. Parking area full of trash. Cash only (credit card access broken?), No refunds even after 5 minutes Worst offense? Dog droppings by room door, and under ac unit. Do yourself a favor, sleep in your car. read more

The room was small and extremely outdated, the bed was so old I could feel the springs in it when I slept, and the television was so small and placed so low that I couldn't see it while I laid in bed because my feet blocked the entire 19" screen. The pool was under construction and the continental breakfast did not exist (coffee and tea available, though). So why would I give four stars to such an obviously inferior hotel? The owner! The woman who owns the place is one of the most legitimately nice and accommodating people you will ever meet. She has some great stories to tell and will talk to you at length, and also provided us with some excellent restaurant recommendations. She is also willing to drop whatever she's doing if you need extra towels, pillows, etc. Just an extremely sweet, interesting woman. If you're looking for high-class accommodations, Tomahawk Lodge isn't the place for you. But if you're willing to trade these things for one of the nicest owners you'll ever meet, give Tomahawk a try next time you're in Cortez. read more

Yes, this is a simple, clean, basic motel in the old Route 66 style. But, the owner offered me an enthusiastic welcome. That's what I needed most after a long drive through freezing rain. The weather seemed so bad, that I wondered if I should skip my visit to Mesa Verde. But she said that in this part of Colorado things change radically day to day. And she was right, the next day was sunny and beautiful. I drove the road through the park, and I almost felt like I was flying through blue skies with fluffy clouds. I had a really interesting tour of "Balcony House" in the National Park, and the guide was excellent. When I checked out the next morning, the owner was so happy to hear that I'd had a good time. She shook my hand, and said bon voyage. read more

*BED BUGS* This place was cheap and a little sketchy but I've stayed in hotels that aren't the best and it's been fine. The non-smoking room was very smoky and there were stains on the carpet but it's cheap so that's okay. Gave it the benefit of the doubt until we found bed bugs. We'll be sleeping in the car. Management just changed and they didn't know how to use the computer so it was cash only, that's fine, but they didn't really seem to know what was going on. We showed them the bugs and they tried to give us a 50% discount, we got a full refund instead. read more

Bed Bugs. Bed Bugs. Bed Bugs. Non-smoking room reeks of smoke. But dude , Bed Bugs. And when confronted the manager said he knew. And then tried to only give a 50% refund when we hadn't been there 2 hours. You would be out of your mind to stay there. We are going to sleep in the car in the desert and hope they didn't get in our clothes. read more

The Tomahawk Lodge was exactly what my husband and I needed after being on the road and camping for 4 days. Connie was incredibly friendly, and accommodated our last-minute requests to change our room type and add a night to our stay. We enjoyed chatting with her, and she gave us great recommendations on places to eat, and things to do in the area. The room itself was cozy, clean and comfortable. It wasn't fancy but we didn't want fancy! The bed and pillows were comfortable, and Connie brought us extra pillows without us even asking! The room had a coffee pot, mini-fridge, and microwave which is more than most places I've stayed at have. For $75/night, it far exceeded expectations! There are also a handful of short, easy-to-hike trails behind the hotel with beautiful views and interesting things to see, including puebloan ruins! It's also a quick walk to a convenience store and multiple restaurants, and it's a great location to stay if you are planning on visiting Mesa Verde. Tomahawk Lodge will definitely be the place we stay anytime we are in the Cortez area. You can't beat the value for the price and the incredible hospitality! read more

Because of reviews on another site, I decided to give this place a chance. As the other reviewer (Tiffany) stated, the hotel is older and somewhat rundown, however, there is evidence that a new roof and other exterior work has been recently completed and it is evident that the owners are trying to keep it up. The lady at the front desk (Owner?) was very nice and was very helpful, giving us tips about seeing the Mesa Verde park and things going on in town. She does have a pronounced accent, and if dealing with here on the phone some people may have problems understanding her, although I did not. I stayed at or near the peak of the tourist season and payed $75.50 per night with tax for the room. MUCH better than the $100+ other hotels in the area were charging. There is a small pool available for guests. I noticed very little vehicle noise - and what I did hear did not bother me - however it is present. I gave this place 4 stars since the things that are important to me (comfortable bed, clean room, easy access, internet access, relatively inexpensive price) were all covered. read more

On our way to Mesa Verde we stopped here based on other reviews and they were spot on. This little mom and pop motel is clean and the staff are friendly. The owner and her two great danes were awaiting our check out in the morning with a pot of hot coffee and a smile. It is older as evident by the decor, but after traveling historic Route 66 for the past few days we found it charming. Very close to Mesa Verde and well priced compared to other places to sleep and shower around town. Oh, and free WiFi!!! Decor - 2 stars Quality of towels and linens- 2 stars Staff- 5 stars Cleanliness- 5 stars Location- 5 stars Price Near Mesa Verde- 5 stars!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

The rooms were very comfortable, although rustic looking and small. We only stayed for one night, but this was enough to highly recommend this quaint little spot in the middle of nowhere. Extremely good value, as well. The owner was warm and welcoming when we showed up after a long drive at 11pm, and was surprisingly cheery when we checked out at 9 am. We needed a place to sleep and shower before hitting the road again, and this place was perfect for that. Stay here for a short or long stay; you won't be disappointed! read more

Old hotel but very well kept/managed. Rooms are a lil small but very cozy, clean, comfortable beds, warm shower, the tub was rather small, but I didn't mind. Fridge, small tv, wifi, heater warms up the room fast! $68 a night for 3 guests, great bargain! read more

Stayed one night. Incredible hospitality. Except for the new carpet, rooms were classic 50s-60s era but really clean. Not a restored motel, but a well kept up motel. I stay a lot of nights a year at JWs and Ritz Carlton's (no Marriott properties in Cortez)- and I was comfortable here and really enjoyed stepping back in time. Wonderful experience if you understand what you are booking. read more

After several nights staying in motels in Utah, Tomahawk Lodge feels like a breath of fresh air. The lady at the front desk is friendly and helpful. The room and the bathroom are very clean. Small touches like travel magazines on the table, sturdy wooden hangers, toilet seat sanitary strip and fluffy towels make this a five star motel for me. read more

This clean, quiet Mom and Pop motel is just on the outskirts of downtown Cortez. The lady at the front desk was very nice and helpful. The room had all the amenities that I needed, a small refrigerator, a micro wave, clean bathroom, clean carpet and close to quite a few restaurants. I ate for the second time at a Mexican restaurant on the north side of the main street, (can't recall the name of the restaurant), but it was good and reasonably priced. I will stay at the Tomahawk Lodge again. read more

Motel had decent ratings so stayed. Ok for place in isolated town Was told I was getting a queen bed but got a broken down double. Shower head struggled to spray any water. Rugs need cleaner attention. Luckily I was so tired that the accommodations weren't that important read more

There were bugs all over the rooms we rented. They were on the bed, the windows, the bath tub, the walls. They were literally everywhere.

Reviewed 5-stars for cleanliness and courtesy.

This was one of my favorite stays on a Western vacation recently. Really great place with a welcoming and friendly proprietor. I asked for extra towel or two and she was caught on the phone but delivered two big fluffy towels to my door within minutes. Great service. I cannot complain about any aspect of my stay and did not even notice any noise from neighbors although the rooms on both sides were occupied. The bath tub alone was a 5 star experience for me because it was deep, ultra clean, and water was nice and hot. Wi Fi worked well. Great location, near main roads and just around the corner from shopping, dining, and a couple of modest entertainment options. True, it's not the most up to date, but the room feels secure and trustworthy and the little touches others have mentioned do add up. For example, the artwork on the walls looks pretty high quality for a budget motel. I also like this era of motel styling with the vanity and sink in the common area with the bedroom, while the tub and toilet are in a separate room. Very nice place to stay and according to what I've researched it's one of the absolute cheapest in this area of Colorado, too. read more

Love it !!! I have stayed here many many times and I highly recommend it Easy to find and conveniently located. Rooms always clean and comfortable. Old route 66 look and feel . They even have the old style heated lights in the bathrooms ( Haven't seen them since I was a kid ) Some of the best coffee you will find in Cortez. Best thing about this place is the staff / management !!!!!! Definitely going to miss Connie and Mike but already really liking and seeing great things from the new management . read more

We stayed here for 1 night before going to Mesa Verde National Park, since it's the closest city we could get to the park. At low season we paid $59 plus tax for low season. When we arrived at the hotel, i was a bit surprised to pay that much for what i saw in the room. but afterwards, i realized it may be around the same in the other motels. The lodging is a bit worn out. Hotel could benefit from some cosmetic work. The rooms are very basic with: a clock, phone a table w/ 2 chairs, a CRT tv, sink that outside the bathroom. There isno breaKfast but there is coffee and hot water in the office. Bed was comfortable. THe only thing is that you're right along the freeway so if you're a super sensitive to sound like i am you might have problems sleeping well. THe pipes are noisy, you can hear your next door neighbors when they shower. Although I have had much better rates and rooms in other cities, I guess in CO the hotel rates are a bit higher. Ihave noticed this is around the state. all in all the location is convenient if you're going to mesa verde. there are groceries stores in town. W e went to city market. there is also a safeway and walmart, which we didnt get a chance to visit. read more

It was clean and the staff was helpful. They only thing is the internet was rather slow and spotty.

I looked at the reviews and assumed this place would have been amazing. Instead, after staying here, I feel like these reviews, which a lot sound identical to each other, were written by the owner. The motel itself is expensive for what it is and the only reason I chose to give it a try was because of the yelp rating. The floors where extremely dirty, they were so disgusting that I tried to avoid looking at them. The shower did not have a good amount of pressure for the water. And lastly the reception/owner did not accommodate my request for a checkout time of later than the standard 11am. On the plus side, the bed was more comfortable than Motel 6 read more

Great little slice of America. Simple and very clean room. This is probably the cleanest smelling room we've stayed in during our entire vacation. Excellent customer service. When we booked we were asked what time we would be checking in. We gave a ballpark figure and the owner made sure the a/c was turned on before our arrival so the room would be cool. Who does that anymore? Will definitely book here again. read more

From the highway and outside, not much to look at and might seem a bit shady; however the staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms are nice, showers are hot, beds are comfy, and the wifi is free and fast. What more can you ask for in Cortez, CO for less than $60? I'd stay again! read more

Very clean and comfortable rooms. I was passing through Cortez the other evening and needed a quiet safe place to park myself overnight. I've only been to Cortez once before so I relied on the other reviewers on Yelp and chose the Tomahawk Lodge. I'm glad I did. This isn't a resort hotel, but they don't charge prices like one either. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a comfortable place to stay. The TV and Wi-fi worked perfectly, and I was pleasantly surprised with the comfort of the room. I wouldn't look any further than the Tomahawk for reasonably priced lodging in this region. I'll definitely stay there in the future. - And as noted by other reviewers, the woman at the front desk was extremely helpful with my needs. read more

If you're lookong for a place to stay the night, this is a great affordable solution. Don't expect anything fancy, but the place is quiet, clean, and relatively comfortable. The woman at the reception dwsk, who I assume to be owner, is very also very friendly. Only two things could have been better during our super short stay: the pillows were too soft and there was only two in the room total, so my neck suffered a little bit, and one of the towels had a cigarette smike smell. I didn't ask for another one because we were in a hurry, so not really complaining. read more
