I thought I would need lots of work done to correct past mistakes, but apparently my teeth are in decent shape! Here are some rules of thumb that they might not have taught at dental school: 1) After a procedure is done, many patients are accustomed to the courtesy of being offered a mirror to view the work and perhaps even ask questions. Giving a mirror to a patient is not a strange or unusual thing to do. 2) When discussing unusually invasive/intensive/dramatic/traumatic procedures -- oral-surgery type procedures -- it's considered polite not to speak of them in a laughing or jocular manner. Patients like to imagine that their dentist is at least simulating empathy with the experience of having one's mouth/jaw cut open. It is actually a big deal so please try to pretend to treat it as such. 3) When a patient asks a question about a procedure, it is considered courteous to offer more than one-word or one-phrase answers, and to at least pretend to have an interest in answering the question and dealing with the patient's questions or concerns. In today's busy world, many patients feel entitled to be made aware of decisions and procedures regarding their care. It is not considered burdensome or out of line to communicate information about these topics, politely and efficiently, to the patient. Bottom line: being a dentist is about more than performing dental work. It entails minimal competency at verbal and non-verbal communication. Unfortunately that may not be what certain dentists consider to be part of their job.

No pain...even after the proceedure, really. My gum was sore, but my tooth ached very little. He and his assistant even worked with me to get my permanent crown before I leave for my trip to Italy. My final crown from him is so deep that everything sticks in the center. When I went back to get it fixed he just sat there and said he was admiring his work. In the process of putting in this last crown, for which it took him two trys to get it to fit right, he damaged the crown behind it. In my opinion, Dr Ragnall has incredibly bad patient communication skills. He is too full of himself. His technical skills are also lacking. Yet he is very brazen in his billing. He charges more than the going rate for sub par work.

Dr. Freudenfeld fit me into his schedule the very next morning. Not only did he fix my tooth, but he pointed out a few places on my teeth he was concerned about, and talked to me about some preventative care. He is not only a great dentist, but he genuinely cares about the health of your teeth. He also very nice, and has a sense of humor - something I always appreciate in doctors. I work in the building and ran to his office before any of my colleagues could see me. He had me in the seat immediately. Within an hour, he was able to totally repair my problem. Due to insurance issues, I decided to face the fire and get it done. I had always imagined there would be incredible pain, both during and for days after. Having known many people who looked like chipmunks for days following their extractions, I didn't want anything to do with it. I was wrong. First off, Dr. Joe is an amazing dentist. I had no pain during the procedure, and I am serious about this. I had no pain during the shots - they did such a good job of deadening the areas, and it was effective. I had no pain during the extraction and so little discomfort after that it was truly amazing. I only took pain meds for one day after, and only as a precautionary measure. I also thought because of my age, I would be entered into another level of pain and lengthy healing - wrong again. The worst part of it was no coffee or carbonated liquids for a couple of days and being relegated to soft food. They did, however, encourage ice cream, so I purchased a couple of pints for medicinal purposes. Dr. Joe is the guy to see if you are putting off having a tooth pulled of any kind. I am grateful for his expertise and the kind, professional staff at Smile Blvd.
