I have a button somewhere around that proudly exclaims that I was at Tom Bergin's 90th's St. Patrick celebration, and I came by it honestly. I came across an article of St. Patrick Day activities in LA. One of them explained that this joint was offering a traditional Irish breakfast from 6:00 a.m. to 10: a.m. I decided that this was the green light I needed to embrace the whimsy/whiskey of the Irish Holiday. I got up early and went from the South Bay, to this place which is located near the Peterson car museum and the Museum about the Academy and its movies. I had to endured heavy traffic, just to get to the location. And, when I got there, I was hit with a harsh reality--- there was no parking to be found, and the parking lot was closed off. It was now time for me to engage in a frustrating LA tradition- the search for a spot for my car to sit, while I went inside a place on a popular moment. I went up and down streets. I was discouraged by signs that basically said, even though this street has open spots you still need a special visitor pass or need to live in one of these houses to park. If you do not, these luxury spot are for another. And since it was early morning on a weekday, the rush hour effect was inflating my frustration while diminishing my resolve to go. I wanted to leave, I did, but, I could not, because I was determined to experience an Irish breakfast despite not being in the emerald isle because what else was I going to do just have Dunkin' again? I turned another street, and then I saw my gift for the lucky, a parking spot that I could ease into. I walked two blocks but decided that the steps were needed to enhance my appetite. As I got near, I understood that this was a spectacle to document, and not just by me, news vans were already there setting up to show the world what being in this place on St. Patricks day meant---- living the holiday to the blimey max! I stepped in and Marley asked if I had a reservation. My heart sank, I had not thought of this. I just saw a mention of the place, and decided to go, no planning, just decision. She found a place for me, quite easily. The interior of their dining room made me feel like I was in the Island of Berk, eating in a cottage right for Vikings. I even thought that if I was fighting a dragon, I would somehow cut one of their hanging old-timey chandeliers, at the exact right time, so it falls atop its head. I am not sure if Vikings are Irish, but on this day imagination got all type of green flags. The place had two options for breakfast--- I chose the Corned Beef hash, and it was a treat for the green eyed masses. I especially liked the smashed potatoes. One of my neigbhors gave me her recipe, and she explained that one bakes the potatoes a bit, then takes like a cookie tray, and smashes the potatoes, so the potatoes are twiced bake, once when they are whole and next when they are broken. At least, that is what I understood. The cubed corned beef, the green color provided by the brussels, and the potatoes so crisp and warm, were a celebration of Ireland in my mouth, and the celebration was marked by jigs on point. But the food, and the environment were backdrop to the Irish energy around. I may be naive, but I was surprised at how many people were already in the bar drinking and in festive costume. I clipped a few of the people who garbed themselves in green and in Irish spirit. My favorite one was the guy who wore a leprechaun hat and died his hair red. He had become an O'rooke for the day, and the festivities he adorned himself with were a reminder that any holiday can be more than splendid if one decides to choose express joy with timidity abandon. A woman had a Dr. Seuss hat but in green and white with many buttons. This was not her first Shamrock induced rodeo, she had collected buttons that confirm her attendance in this yearly event, which is kind of cool because she lives for different days, not just the weekend. I also drank a green beer, or more accurately took a few sips. When in Ireland to like the Leprechauns do. One of my neighbors told his dining companion, it is a marathon not a sprint. Apparently, some people were really there to drink from the morning to evening. So if that is your thing to do this and be great in green. I looked up how the Irish say cheers and they say Sláinte. I asked my neighbors to raise their glass and Sláinte with me. They did, and we did it with gusto! That memory is one that I will carry with me for years. So I lived a breakfast in this place and truly it was something that I experience and I will remember. This place does St. Patrick's day right and I felt lucky to be there. read more

Background On Establishment: The beginnings of this beloved pub were with a lawyer named Tom Bergin who opened The Old Horseshoe Tavern on Wilshire Blvd. in 1936. Eventually the business became Tom Bergin's. It is one of Los Angeles' oldest continuously running restaurant/bars. Tom Bergin's was threatened with closure. Through the efforts of the Miracle Mile Residential Association and the Los Angeles Conservancy, Tom Bergin's was successfully designated as an Historic Cultural Monument in June 2019. Fun Fact: 2nd oldest liquor license and oldest Irish bar in Los Angeles (1936). Background On Visit: Decided to celebrate St. Patty's day early. Heard great things about this place so we decided head out to this place. Credit Cards: They're accepted Restrooms: Restrooms are available. It on the other side of the horse shoe shape bar table. Location/Parking: Located between San Vicente and W. 8th Street. Free parking in their private lot. If you can't find parking in the lot, meter parking is the best bet. Look for signs. After 8pm, it's free. Ambiance/Decor: Neat ambiance and decor. Loved the 4 leaf clover stained glass chandeliers and cardboard shamrocks on the walls and ceilings to memorialize the names of its favored customers. Among the famous names with shamrocks are Tommy Lasorda, Kiefer Sutherland, Ronald Reagan and Cary Grant. Service: Service was alright. There wasn't a host/hostess to greet us, but we decided to grab a seat at the horse shoe shaped bar table. The bartenders were nice and gave some historical facts about the shop. Drink Of Choice: Decided on the green beer, because St. Patty's day was coming up. Who doesn't love food coloring beer? I sure do! I also had some of the hot apple cider. The bartender was kinda heavy handed with the whiskey. :) Food Of Choice: Liked both the Ole Fat Reuben and the Horseshoe Burger, but like the Ole Fat Reuben the most. Buyer beware: 20% auto gratuity added to bill without my knowledge. I visited yesterday with a party of three. When we arrived, we ordered beers right away. I asked the hostess with black hair what beers were available because none of the taps were labeled, there was no beer menu provided, and no menu was visible to us. She seemed annoyed by the question and quickly and quietly listed the taps (it's your literal job). We ended up ordering three draft beers and sitting outside. Later, when I went inside to close my tab, the hostess told me the tab had already been closed about five minutes earlier and asked whether I or someone in my party had closed it. I explained that neither I nor anyone in my group had done so. She spent several minutes looking for my card and repeatedly suggested that I must have been the one who closed the tab, despite my explaining that I had been outside with my group the entire time. Eventually, she discovered that a coworker had actually closed the tab. At no point did anyone apologize or acknowledge that the mistake may have been on their end. The interaction felt dismissive and unprofessional. After receiving my receipt, I left a 15% tip. However, once I got outside, I noticed the total for three beers was $46, which seemed unusually high. I went back inside and requested an itemized receipt. That's when I discovered that a 20% gratuity had already been added automatically, and I had unknowingly added another 15% tip on top of that. I found this practice deceptive because the automatic gratuity was not clearly disclosed to me. For a party of only three people, and given the level of service we received, the added gratuity was especially surprising. I enjoy tipping service industry workers well and am happy to tip well when the service warrants it. In this case, the staff made a mistake, repeatedly implied that I was responsible for it, never apologized, and provided poor customer service throughout the visit. I had a fantastic grilled cheese (I asked for grilled onions to be added.) My friends had fish and chips. The atmosphere is down to earth and authentic. This is NOT where you go when you want to see and be seen. This is where you go when you want to enjoy a drink (or three) with old friends. I enjoyed spotting not one, but two of my college buddies names on the ceiling in the famous Tom Bergin shamrocks. One of those names now lives in Spain. It was nice to "see" him again. The first thing I saw when walking in was dogs in the bar= my personal heaven! The vibe was chill and welcoming. I was lucky enough to try so many things and each was more delicious than the last. I had a hot Irish coffee (yum) an iced Irish coffee (YUMMMM would go back just for this) and an orange vodka drink that was also delicious. The Rueben was great, amazingly crisp fries. Went for lunch and the food was exceptional. I had their wings, my partner had one of there burgers, and my friends had a Ruben and a turkey blt. The lemon pepper wings were delicious and their house made ranch was a plus! My partner wants to go back for their burger. And my friend that was visiting loved the Ruben. And the only complaint on the blt was too much avocado! (I kinda love that they're not shy on the avocado) the drinks were great! I got strawberry fields and it was such a beautiful herbal gin drink. Best little bar in Los Angeles. I've been coming here since I was a little kid with my parents. Because it was also a restaurant back in the 70s. This pub is epic. The walls are covered in Shamrock's. Many are decades old. My Shamrock is in between the men's and women's bathroom. Ha ha! So I am a regular. I love all the bartenders. Super friendly.. they feel like family! Great cocktails, super tasty food. I love the brussels sprouts! The fried chicken sandwich is delicious! I've been back to Tom Bergin's twice in the last year, both times because of its exact geographic location. We wanted a place to drink after an event at the Petersen, then joined a friend's afterparty for an event at the Grove. It's surprising how few bars there are in this sort of Grovey mid-Wilshire area. I like Tom Bergin's, which is apparently one of L.A.'s oldest restaurants, opened in 1936. (I guess I had a bad experience there over a decade ago, but I have in fact moved on.) The bar area is fun, with a lot of character. A strong Irish pub thing going on, with lots of brick and reddish wood, and decorative cardboard shamrocks bearing the names of favorite regulars. Bar service is friendly and competent. The drinks are solid, nothing fancy. Beer and wine and standard cocktails. Irish coffee, too--the bar has a weak claim to originating the drink in the United States, and is at least a notable and historic purveyor. It isn't really in my restaurant rotation, but I like it for drinks and am sure I'll be back again soon. I'm not going anywhere, and neither, it seems, is Tom Bergin's. read more

5 stars for coolness and history, 3 stars for lunch. Probably a much better place to hang out in during the evening hours. I'm guessing we caught them short handed as it was get your menu from the bar, seat yourself and then return to the bar to order your lunch. Also has self-service for water as well as returning to the bar to get a refill for our sodas. 4 stars for the fish and chips and the patty melt. 3 stars for the burger. Funny enough, the lettuce was too crunchy . 2 stars for the Shepherds pie. Not enough veggies in the meat sauce and way too many onions for me. Of course, others may have a different opinion. Really an amazing place to visit based on the history. Think they have been there since 1936. For me, it would be a great place to return for a cocktail and then, maybe some fish and chips. Outdoor seating is available in the parking lot. My friend and I each ordered cocktails, priced at $15, which were well-crafted and not overly diluted with ice. Celebrated here for St. Patty's day and it was a lot of FUN. The beers kept flowing, the music was solid, and security was doing a great job. I say that because we all know that as the beer flows people can get a bit obnoxious, but the security kept things running smoothly. NOW, with that said, I will say it was CRAZY crowded, and they weren't serving their regular food menu. Which was a bummer because that's what I wanted to try. There are a few tables outside where they have live bands playing. Parking was a bit of a challenge. We had to cross busy Fairfax. 5/5: Service: everyone was nice to us. Even the owners dog stopped by inside to say "hi". Food: 5/5! Everything we ordered was super fresh and tasty! 5/5: The fried chicken sandwich with honey sriracha was insanely good. Hands down, one of the worst, unnecessarily tense, borderline racist, and uncomfortably irritating dinning experiences of my life. I'd like to give this place the benefit of the doubt that is victim of poor management in choosing (and tolerating) an embarrassingly pretentious, entitled waitstaff who treats the bar like their own personal club house. I almost forgot about my experience at this place until I was driving down Fairfax the following week with my family on the way to the Petersen Automotive. They were curious to try out the restaurant and quickly changed their minds after sharing my experience. During my visit, I walked in to see if I could score a quick, happy hour meal during my 30min break while working down the street. Being a part of the service industry, I respect my fellow waitstaff by treating their businesses with humility. Beginning with me walking inside and waiting to be sat rather than feel entitled to take a seat anywhere I want. I literally made eye contact with two of the three bartenders present and neither of which even bothered to say hello or let me know that I could sit anywhere. I quietly made my way to a corner of the bar and waited for one of them to approach me. Nothing. It wasn't until a tattooed female bartender walked past me to approach what I assumed were some regulars at the bar that were sitting next to me. With time running out and my belly asking for something to fill up. After she finished her conversation with her friends, I greeted the bartender myself and asked to see a happy hour menu, if any. She gave me the only bar menu available, which is understandable, but, again, no communication on her part. No etiquette whatsoever to signal that they have no happy hour menu. As if to say: "This is what we have. Take it or leave it." While I browsed the menu (which, admittedly, contained a few budget friendly options that were delicious), she reached over for my half empty bottle of cold brew I brought with me and said: "Can I take care of this for you?" To which I responded that "I'm still working on it", but, thanked her regardless. In return, she gave me a snide glare of disapproval as if I was clipping my toe nails over the bar while people were eating. (Sorry, I'm sleep deprived and didn't want to buy a drink that would make me sleepy. Or, get me in trouble at work. Is that ok?!) Didn't reciprocate the uncouth gesture and just placed my order. When I did so, she asked if I wanted to open a tab. Since I was only eating one thing, I initially thought it would be a good idea to close the tab. But, occasionally, co workers ask me to pick up something for them to save their trip and enjoy their breaks longer. So, I chose to keep it open. When I told her that I only have my phone, she said that she needed a card and that she needs to close the tab as I go each time I buy something. Never. NEVER IN MY LIFE, up to this point, have I ever been asked to close as I go when I make a purchase at a restaurant or bar. Too bad for the "bartender of the century" because my ticket could have easily climbed to $40 to $60 if I had ordered some food to go. And, that would have garnished her a larger tip. Guess my money is no good here. Moving forward, I shouldn't have tipped the "bartender of the century" working the counter, but, again, out of respect for my fellow industry members. I left a 20% grat' on a $20 purchase. Apparently that wasn't enough, because, after I requested a glass of water with a lime. She proceeded to make her rounds greeting her friends around the bar and completely ignored my request. I can still hear her making a spectacle of how blatantly she was ignoring me by being extra jubilant with her friends as they talked. I ended up having to ask the food runner to help me find a glass of water to pair with my meal. I can't recall his name, but, he was nice fellow who shook my hand and introduced himself after I thanked him for being so gracious. The rest of my meal consisted of more snide glares from the bartenders occasionally glancing my way to expedite me to leave. No: "How's your food? Can I get you something else?" Or, even a simple: "Hey, I'm a little busy, but, if you need something, please let me know." Nothing. And, frankly, I would have left this miserable place early if not for the fact that I was hungry and short on time. To this place's credit, the food was delicious. But, I am never coming back here. And, from the looks of things, I'm not the only one. Furthermore, my staff at my job knows better now than to walk into a place that will treat them like an inconvenience. No surprise since they're gradually loosing clientele to the "stellar waitstaff" that not only excels at repelling customers. But, they're probably bleeding out payroll to be compensated their mediocre customer service skills. And, ballooning food costs due to downgraded food sales. read more

If you wanna feel like you're in a pub and you're in Los Angeles this is a great place for that. The service is good. Tom Bergin's, opened in 1936 and at this location since 1949, has had some brushes with death in recent years. Currently it survives as a pub: the large dining rooms in the back and upstairs are out-of-bounds, and all the activity now happens around the bar, with plenty of barstools, a couple of booths, and several picnic tables in the (free!) parking lot. The menu of pub grub is limited but quite tasty. (Order at the bar; the food will be brought out to you.) I especially love the fried chicken sandwich, which is HUGE and comes with a generous portion of fries or a salad. And the Irish coffee here remains the standard. It's perfection. We Angelenos are living in a grim time when many classic restaurants and bars are shuttering. Tom Bergin's is a cozy, charming old place with an attentive staff. While it might be overly optimistic to hope that it does well enough for the current owners to reopen those dining rooms, get table service going again, and relight that wonderful old fireplace, for now it's a friendly neighborhood bar with great drinks and comfort food at fair prices.
