Housed at the end of a highway strip mall outside of Danville, Rustic Barn is neither rustic nor a…read morebarn. It is, improbably, a fantastic Asian fusion restaurant. Yes, you read that right. The idiosyncrasies do not stop with the name. Inside, The Rustic Barn offers an intimate space with low lighting and some interesting décor: random photos of locomotives adorn the wall. The menu skews Thai albeit with some Japanese dishes (gyoza, teriyaki, yaki udon) and a few (a burger, a steak and potatoes) that fit the establishment's rurally suggestive name. The proprietor, Jeb, is gracious and accommodating as well as a showman who likes to joke with his guests. His promise of "everything fresh, everything homemade" is a lot to live up to, but the kitchen here has the chops to deliver on that promise. Our group went with a pair of starters (crab rangoons and gyoza), a pair of curries (roadhouse and green), and a pair of noodle dishes (yaki udon and pad Thai). Everything was attractively plated and delicious. The rangoons were hand-formed into delicate shapes and contained plenty of filling while the gyoza were nice and crisp. My entrée was the roadhouse curry: the house version of Massaman. A hearty dish, it boasted thick-cut vegetables and a rich sauce done to the desired (a little bit spicy) level of heat. Prices are moderate (entrees start in the upper teens), but portions are plenty filling. Given how many Danville restaurants were closed on a Sunday evening, I count myself lucky that The Rustic Barn was not among them. If you come here seeking country cooking, you'll be confused and perhaps disappointed. But if you know what you're getting yourself into, the combination of personable service and tasty food in an offbeat location makes this the epitome of a hidden gem.

The dining area and bathroom were both clean. I arrived around 12:40 p.m. for lunch and waited nearly 20 minutes for my food. The rice portion was large, but it was mixed with eggs and had no flavor--I didn't finish it. The Lo Mein was okay; I've had better, but it wasn't terrible. The egg rolls were the biggest disappointment. I expected to see shrimp or chicken inside, but they were mostly vegetables. The staff was attentive and polite, and the atmosphere was nice. However, I probably wouldn't return. For the price, the food just didn't satisfy my taste buds. 3 stars for the staff and cleanliness of location.

Service was good, and food came out fast. I liked the onion soup that came with the hibachi dinner. BF had steak and shrimp, and I just had the steak hibachi. Steak was perfectly cooked, veggies were okay, slightly overcooked, and the fried rice was decent. Although the beef was tender, it was lacking the savory umami taste and missing the slightly sweet flavor profile from mirin. It wasn't bad but not great either. Then we shared the beef lomein; the lomein was delicious, but the beef didn't have much taste. Overall, passable for Asian fusion.

My wife and I are local to the RTP area and wanted to try a new place in Durham. Given the reviews…read moreon this place, we were looking forward to try it. However, we were utterly disappointed with our food there. The bao buns had a tender pork in it but the only sauce it included was hoisin which made it too salty. The Korean fried chicken in the 'Spicy' flavor was flavorless. The sauce was extremely bland alongside the chicken meat inside. Don't let the red bright color deceive you, we kept wondering when the 'spice' would kick it (it never did!). We each got a curry udon and added chicken to it. As frequent curry eaters, we wanted the Asian flavors we enjoy however, this udon was bland as well. The chicken we asked to be added felt like it was just chopped and put over the udon with no actual flavor integration into the dish. We left this place feeling like it was a waste of our money. Given their higher prices, I would've expected something A LOT better with some real Asian flavors.

There's not a ton of seating, but we got a table quickly. The service was quick, and even though the place was small, it felt more cozy than cramped. I liked having the menu on the wall! They had two vegan options, and my partner & I both got the Biang Biang noodles. It was good, and perhaps even better the next day (the serving was big enough that I couldn't finish it). My sister got the Jjajiang Mian & absolutely loved it. This was a very positive experience, but not mindblowing--I think that the hype around the "M" restaurants perhaps raised my expectations a bit too much. It's also possible that their non-vegan options are stronger than their vegan options. Overall, though, very yummy, the prices are very reasonable for Durham ($16 for the Biang Biang noodles), and I would come back & try the veggie curry if given the chance.

Juju (9th Street - Durham) Although we live in North…read moreRaleigh, we've been spending more time exploring Durham's restaurant scene. This time we tried Juju on 9th Street for lunch. Parking couldn't have been easier. We found a space right out front in the lot off 9th Street and walked straight in. It was a quiet Thursday afternoon, so we were seated immediately. The dining room has an elegant, relaxed feel, and with only a few other diners it made for a peaceful lunch. Lunch for two came to about $80 plus tax and tip, making this one of the more upscale lunches we've had recently. We ordered: * Crispy Brussels Sprouts * Shrimp Dumplings (6) * Mongolian Beef * Grilled Lemongrass Hanger Steak Salad * Unsweetened iced tea The Food The Crispy Brussels Sprouts were a great start. They were crisp on the outside without being overcooked, and the mint, peanuts, and pickled onions added both texture and freshness. It was also a large enough portion for leftovers. The Shrimp Dumplings were excellent. The flavor was outstanding, and the Thai chili oil, garlic, scallions, and sesame worked beautifully together. My only criticism was the portion size. At six small dumplings, they felt a little pricey for what you receive. The Mongolian Beef was probably the best value of the meal. The beef had a nice sear while remaining tender inside, and the portion was generous enough that we had leftovers for another meal. It had a nice overall flavor as well. The Grilled Lemongrass Hanger Steak Salad was good, but not quite at the same level. The steak had good flavor, but the cut itself was somewhat chewy. The accompanying rice was simply prepared and didn't add much to the dish. The flavors were enjoyable, although slightly sweeter than my wife prefers. Service Service was excellent. Our server took the time to walk us through each dish, explaining ingredients, spice levels, and preparation so we could choose items that fit our tastes. We especially appreciated her knowledge of the menu and her attentiveness throughout the meal, my iced tea was never empty. Overall Juju offers an attractive setting, excellent service, and several very well-executed dishes. Our biggest challenge was simply that much of the lunch menu leans toward spicier offerings than we typically enjoy. While we probably wouldn't return specifically for lunch, the dinner menu appears to offer a much wider variety of choices that fit our tastes. We'll likely be back to give dinner a try.

Most places put a pepper symbol and it's not spicy at all, but this single red pepper symbol means business!!!!!! I'm sensitive to spice at the moment so eating my food was a bit of a marathon....but in a good way! Think runny nose & sweating hot with tons of delicious flavor. To start, we served wonton strips with a white yum yum type sauce which was a nice surprise. For our app we had the crab puffs (crab ragoons) which of course were not spicy, perfectly crispy and had the right amount of filling. I also ordered a dragon roll which came out after my main entree since the sushi bar was backed up. This actually worked out perfect because the cream cheese in the roll was a great way to calm the spice in my main entree. The mango and crab on the roll were very fresh, and the size was also pretty hefty for being an 8 piece roll. I could have easily made this into a lighter full meal. For my main entree I got the spicy basil with chicken (red pepper sign alert!!!), brown rice and miso soup. The miso soup was good as expected, the brown rice was cooked to perfection and served in a side bowl, and the main entree was plentiful with perfectly cooked veggies & chicken! This dish brought the heat but in a very good way!!! I couldn't get enough of that spicy basil flavor!!!! I only ate half the dish so looking forward to a delicious lunch today! Can't wait to come back and try more of their dishes but while I'm sensitive to spice at the moment I may avoid the pepper symbol for a bit!

They had a pretty decent lunch special menu, following the fairly standard "pick two or pick three" basic sushi rolls with a soup and/or salad format. It was maybe a bit more basic than most sushi places, but I did find a trio that I enjoyed. I got the lunch pick three combo, with the salmon avocado, spicy tuna, and the spicy yellowtail (which is really also spicy tuna). Everything came out pretty quick, and the restaurant had a nice comfy environment to chat. The tea was pretty weak. The sushi rolls themselves were just good, nothing surprising but also nothing disappointing. Fish tasted clean and fresh, which it's hard to ask for more from a place like this. Would come back for a future lunch rendezvous in Mebane.
