When this place first opened maybe a year or so ago, I heard people say there wasn't the widest selection so I just never went. This is where I'm going to definitely tell you to never listen to anybody else's opinion and you should always try things for yourself. Because when I came here, it was beautiful. The hot foods bar may not be as big as the costa mesa location, but there's plentiful teriyaki chicken, salmon, soups, etc. And all of it is really good in my opinion. There's an infinite variety of Japanese snacks and the cashiers were so nice and kind. Even the security guard was helpful. I also just wanted to mention that the beef prices here were some of the best I had ever seen! Steaks for 7 to 8 bucks??? This place makes it possible to eat well even on a budget, and I am extremely grateful for that. I know for I fact I don't need to drive all the way to Costa Mesa anymore because this Tokyo Central is really, really great in my strong opinion. 10/10. read more

I was very happy when this store opened. I love Japanese food, and I am always looking for great ingredients for my cooking. They have a nice selection of seasonal produce to go along with the staples. Their prices are higher, but the quality is there. Fish selection and quality is great. Prices are reasonable for the quality of seafood. I buy snapper here for ceviche, but get your jalepenos at a Mexican market for freshness and price. The prepared foods - sushi, poke, onigiri, musubi, hot dishes - are all tasty. They can add up fast though. The snacks and drinks are awesome if you like the Japanese snacks and drinks. Liquor selection is small but good quality. Whenever I go in, I spend way too much, but I am always happy with my purchases. Oh, parking is a challenge. Busy with small spaces. read more

This is a wonderful supermarket, and I'm really happy to see Tokyo Central open a location in Irvine. It has everything you'd expect from the other Tokyo Central stores, from fresh produce and meats to bottled drinks, snacks, and pantry staples. If you're looking for a quick lunch or dinner, they also have an incredible selection of freshly prepared meals that make it easy to grab something on the go. One of my favorite parts is the hot food section. It's essentially a large self serve hot bar with a wide variety of dishes, so you can mix and match and take as much or as little as you'd like. There are plenty of options, and everything looked fresh and well stocked during my visit. Compared to the nearby Mitsuwa, this location feels much larger and has a wider selection overall. Whether you're doing your weekly grocery shopping, picking up lunch for work, or just stopping in for drinks and snacks, Tokyo Central is definitely worth checking out. read more

They have great desserts and the hot bar is probably one of the best. And they have a ton of ready to heat and eat options. Tokyo Central is an amazing supermarket that is absolutely overflowing with different Japanese products! They have an incredible selection of different freshly prepared foods, with two giant buffet tables where you can load up on as much of the different options as you care to get. There's also an incredible variety of packaged foods, other items, and different things that are directly imported from Japan. It seems much bigger than Mitsuwa Marketplace, which is in the same shopping center. The selection is also a lot more varied. For example they have a ton of shabu shabu options that I haven't been able to find elsewhere. They also have a highly organized checkout system, as well as self-checkout, so you can get prompt service if you need it. Overall, this is a great place for anyone who takes Japanese groceries seriously. Worth the trip for lunch or for shopping! read more

I finally made it out to Irvine to check out their new Tokyo Central. The way the store is set up is definitely reminiscent of that of which I encountered in Japan; a tad bit small a cramped feeling but for sure efficient use of all the space. Everything is displayed beautifully and packed neatly. There were many displays labeled in English and had a lot of helpful pamphlets/signs educating shoppers on origins, directions of use, and more on these signs. I really appreciate that since I am always looking for new things to try and looking to learning new things about products. I especially love the hot food area. It was quite busy since I had come in around noon, just in time for lunch. Everything was fresh and nicely labeled, with workers bringing out more hot trays as others began to run out. The offerings here for hot foods have a few varying items than that of the one in Costa Mesa. There were also tons of bentos available as well; coming in around noon seems to be the move if you're looking to grab a quick bite. The tables to eat are outside the supermarket in front of their sushi restaurant, but remember to grab utensils and accompaniments inside near the exit door. read more

Tokyo central hot foods review: love their selection of hot foods I ordered: marinated fried chicken, shrimp Shumai, salmon. The food is all savory full of umami flavor especially the marinated fried chicken which is juicy. Salmon is cooked well and Shumai is also great. One of my go to places to eat and I don't say this about any other hot foods section from other markets. I recommend getting the food more at the bottom so it's not dry. Tokyo central Irvine is a smaller Tokyo central but has everything you need. read more

The hot buffet ($10.99 per pound) was good to me on a cold, rainy day. Previously I wrote about some of it possibly upsetting my stomach. A Tokyo Central representative asked me questions and I felt reassured with the proactive approach to my review. The next time I saw the skewers they looked more well done. I bought them and liked their umami taste. I purchased more food for lunch and thought it was convenient and tasty for a weekend lunch. The cashiers are polite and efficient. There's also self checkout. I still prefer Tokyo Central Costa Mesa, partially due to nostalgia and also because of the larger variety of ceramics. The parking lot is much better here and I know I'll return for cooking staples such as miso paste, rice, tofu, and produce. The only downside is the wait... because everything is made fresh the foods not always ready. We came in around opening time and waited about an hour for HALF of the food to start coming out. I absolutely love that Tokyo Central opened in Irvine! While it's smaller than the Costa Mesa location, it's cleaner - though the signage on the displays always looks somewhat chaotic. The prepared foods are a great deal. Even though the store is smaller, they always have a terrific selection of items - I always have a tough time choosing! I've done the hot bar as well. though that one adds up. Don't miss their karaage chicken! It's great for picking up noodles, sauces and other grocery items. I love going to Tokyo Central! What's not to love? Hot food bar: tempura, udon, karaage, etc. Options are perfect. If you're looking for a quick lunch. it seemed like a lot of people were coming here for that exact reason during their lunch break from work. I've tried there tempera and give that an A+. They also have sauces on the side, so don't skip out on that. Other premade lunches: I saw a lot of their items were marked 20% off. These were things that they needed to be purchased the day of such as Ramen and rice bowls. I tried their 3 piece innari and it did not disappoint. Party trays: For Friendsgiving this year, my friends and I ordered one of their sashimi trays that was enough for 3 to 4 people. Make sure to order at least least four days in advance online and then pick up in store. Super convenient and easy. We made extra rice and got some seaweed to go with the sashimi and it was absolutely perfection. Parking was easy. They also have tons of snack options. Some things are on the pricier side so just keep that in mind. Come hungry and it'll be a great way to spend an afternoon. read more

The tuna was bland, tasteless, and seemed like it had a filler in it instead of fresh tasty spicy tuna. I was so sad I spent any money on it. Luckily, I bought it mainly as a snack; I would have been even more upset if it were a lunch! I think it was $7.99. What a waste. Not sure how you get this staple of a dish so wrong, but I'm never buying it again, and it makes me wary of buying any rolls there, now. Parking was okay because we went on a weekday, non peak hours. I was looking for a roasted green tea or hojicha tea from the Oi Ocha brand, but they only had regular green tea and matcha green tea packets. Again, disappointed, I was looking for the canned strawberry milk, and that wasn't there either!!!! WTH! The layout of the store seems awkwardly narrow and a bit suffocating. I can't imagine being in there if it's packed. No, thank you, I'm so sorry. On the positive side, the hot bar seems to be very popular. The salmon was all out. That must be a best seller at lunch. Yum! I've been to the Costa Mesa location and find that one a bit more unnerving. The workers are helpful there, and the layout feels bigger even though the store itself is older. From the Costa Mesa location, I've tried the fruit sando and the salmon onigiri, and those were good. I always appreciate a discount, so the 20% off the deli foods is nice after 7 p.m. If you love all things Japanese, definitely try them out. My mom found this place on Yelp and wanted to check it out with me. This location used to be an Armenian market, but they completely transformed it into Tokyo Central--and wow, we definitely went a little crazy shopping here. We spent almost $200 just exploring all the goodies! They have an amazing food section with bento boxes, egg sandwiches, tempura, rice bowls, and more. The variety really surprised me. My mom was especially excited because she even found the exact hair dye she usually buys straight from Japan! Everything is very well organized, and the ambiance is clean, modern, and inviting with such a great variety of Japanese goods. A nice market as an alternative to Mitsawa. Went there for some fish and veggies for dinner. The fish was goo and the market session is bigger than the Irvine Mitsawa. Pretty much every section has more options than the Irvine Mitsawa, but smaller or similar in size to the Costa Mesa Mitsawa. There are a lot more prepared foods here (though I was there after it had been put away) including large hot and cold serve yourself bars. read more

Finally got a chance to visit Tokyo Central in Irvine! I have always been cautious about going to this plaza during peak hours as the entrance and exit is pretty horrendous. I got there on a Wednesday at 12:30pm and surprisingly, it wasn't as busy as I thought it would be. I prefer parking towards the back as the parking spaces are bigger. The market setup it pretty unique, think longitudinally long, and I like it. There are definitely plenty of grocery options as well as prepared food. Staff there were very friendly and helpful. I also enjoyed all the signs posted around the grocery areas about recommend items and selected items to buy. The overall vibe for the market is warm and cozy. Tokyo Central is a brand of Japanese grocery/market that can be found all over Southern California. This location is smaller than their other locations. The biggest one is in Torrance/Gardena and they have another location in Costa Mesa. The store is full of Japanese ingredients and gems and it's easy to find awesome things that have been imported from Japan. You can get delicious cookies and cakes that came straight from Hokkaido, Ramen from Ichiran in Japan, and sodas/chips/sauces from there as well. I bought several pre-marinated meats for meal preps. If you know someone that loves Japanese Whiskeys, then this is a place that you can find really hard to find bottles at market rates. One of the best things here is their bento lunches and sushi/sashimi lunches that they make daily. If you come around 10:30, you'll be able to get them hot and fresh. If you are looking for a cheap meal for the next day, then you could get those same meals at a 20% discount after 7pm. They also have a sushi restaurant next door called "Waka Sakura" that I really enjoy. The wait times on a weekend can be crazy, but you can go on a weekday/night without a wait. Though this store has a smaller footprint, it does have a lot of good things, and I would definitely stop by when I'm in the area; otherwise, I'd likely head to their larger stores in Gardena. read more

The packaged food here is so good and they work with Go Go Curry in Torrance! As well as Mammoth Bakery for a lot of their Japanese bakery items. The store is well organized and mimics a lot of grocery stores in Japan! Having just gone, I was elated to see a lot of familiar products and snacks that weren't overpriced and inauthentic. I was especially excited to see Go Go Curry as we visited the chain about 5 times during our trip in Tokyo. The workers were very helpful towards using the microwave for my plate and packaging my items. The fried shrimp onigiri was generously filled and discounted because it was after 7pm! Tokyo Central finally opened in Irvine and I waited a few months before visiting because I've seen all the crowds. I went on a Sunday afternoon and the parking lot was completely full. Inside was full of people as well. Definitely try to avoid weekends if you can! The space isn't that big and the store is stocked with everything Japanese imaginable. I really liked all the prepared food options. We got onigiri, salmon sashimi, karate bento and katsu don bentos. I do like this Tokyo Central location in Irvine. Very different layout than the Costa Mesa store. It is very long and the staff have always been very friendly. For the prepared sushi and hot food items, I give it a 4 as I feel the selection at the Costa Mesa one is much better. I there is plenty of parking. We have come here twice so far during the weekday so parking has not been a problem just yet. Love that it's right next to Boiling Point. I do think they have an excellent candy section. Having a second Japanese market in the same plaza is kind of an insane move, but I guess if you're crazy enough you can go back and forth to compare prices. Parking is super fisted here, but there's lots of spaces if you don't mind walking. I have a local Tokyo Central and I've been to the Costa Mesa, Gardena, Torrance, and SD locations. I always say that the West Co one has the least to offer out of all the ones I've gone to, but this one might actually take the cake. It's the "longest" Tokyo Central I've been to and there's space limited because of that. No food court, so it's only dining outside, but there's microwaves when you exit. And this location has self check out too. Again, because it's so "long and narrow", there's no other really dining option there aside from Waka Sakura right next door. So know that there's a lack of a food court and also the Kiddleton Kiosk crane game machines. Everything here I've seen at other Tokyo Centrals with maybe a couple specific things I don't see, Mofusand plushie keychains, some blind boxes, some desserts, etc. But the fish, bento, sushi/nigiri, drinks, instant noodles, etc. are all the same. They have the discount after 7 PM for bentos and sushi, but I think the one near me does it even earlier, but with it opening more recently, I can see why. More things ran out, more shelves decimated and there's not even turbo sales going on either. I think it's the crowds and the hype. I think another thing that made it kind of a meh experience is that it seems less "fun" than the other Tokyo Centrals. The Gardena one has cute and quirky memes, anime/cartoon references to advertise their goods, and all other ones have their little penguin mascots reacting and enjoying the products (like art cut outs) and this location barley had any. Bring on the charm! Say no to cringe minimalism. I guess it works if you want to just pick something up and leave immediately. Again, overall alright, but right now the lowest on the Tokyo Central tier list for me. read more

It's been a few weeks since Tokyo Central opened in Irvine near Culver and the 5 FWY. The lot is cramped. Do not come here if you have a wide or long vehicle. We found parking but it was really tight. This parking lot is not for the faint of heart. We arrived around 7 pm when their made-to-go food items dropped in price by 20%. The hot bar had shut down by that time of day but there was plenty of bentos and sushi available. The line was crazy. We went to dinner next door and came back afterwards to shop for Japanese items. We got a few items for a decent price and used the self-check out kiosks. The store is larger than the Mitsuwa in the same plaza. I'm glad there is a closer one now than the Costa Mesa one. As the store is new, it's clean, but the layout is a bit of a maze. We were able to walk around prior to dinner to get the layout so we could return and quickly shop. So glad I made the trek to the Grand opening lof this new market in Irvine Ca. I arrived mid morning on a Tuesday after the grand opening weekend to avoid the lines although it was still pretty busy locating a parking space in the shared strip center. I was taken back of how large the market is and how the layout was thought fully planned out. I enjoyed browsing at the selection of ready to eat sashimi and nigiri packs offered and the wagyu beef selection is diverse too. As you first enter the market, you'll be immediately present in the produce department which offered diverse options of fruits and veggies. The market also offers large options of Japanese snacks, breads & pastries, a hot deli with soups, hot entrees, and a big section of ready-made meals that you can purchase and microwave for a quick meal. There's also a huge section of ice creams to indulge in from for your sweet tooth. Btw, I dined at their revolving sushi restaurant called Waka Sakura located next store and was wowed with the entire experience. read more

Tokyo Central has finally arrived in Irvine. The crowds swarm during the Grand Opening weekend, and the whole front is lined up with flowers gifted in support of their new location. Parking was awful even before they joined the plaza but it's even worse now. I saw people parking far away and walking over just to check this store out.   The overall sq ft of this location is smaller than other Tokyo Central locations I've been to, but they are bigger than the Mitsuwa nearby in the same plaza. They really squeezed a lot into this store. They have produce, seafood, meat, sushi, bentos, 2 buffet bars, meat, noodles, frozen foods, Japanese snacks. The down side is narrow aisles with folks bumping into you when it's busy.   On my first visit during grand opening weekend, I came too late and the daily items and the buffet area were EMPTY. Okay that's my fault. At other Tokyo Centrals the bentos and rice bowls go on sale after 7pm, but with this new store's popularity you probably won't have a chance to get anything after 7pm. Since I worked so hard for the parking, I decided to get some snacks to make my trip worth it.   I came back the next day for lunch and I found it was even more crowded. Even though it was busy and crowded, they still have a better bento selection than Mitsuwa. Also they have a hot bar and Mitsuwa does not. I was able to get some items from the hot bar which is $10.99/lb. They have 2 buffet bars, but the selection was scarce and could be more healthy. Just to compare the Whole Foods hot bar comes in at $11.99/lb with a larger selection and the Amazon Fresh salad bar comes in at $8.99/lb but with a smaller selection.   Since the store is like a maze, you will have to trek through to get to the cashiers. There is one side for normal check out and one side for self check out. There is a sign that says self check out needs to be 10 items or less and you much use debit or credit as payment. Well... all the folks directly in front of me have 20-30 items and there was no enforcement by the staff. Not to mention some of these people did not seem to know how to use the self check out machine. I was helping one of the ladies in front of me ring up her kabocha pumpkin. It wasn't under K or P... It was under.... S for Squash Kabocha. SMH too hard, it should be under both.   I was able to check myself out within a minute. It's meant to be quick and easy people. Sigh.   I feel like I gave them a good shot coming back the next day. I just can't see myself coming here or even anywhere in this plaza cause the parking is horrific. It would have been faster for me to drive to the Costa Mesa location of Tokyo Central and avoid the parking hassle, long lines, and empty shelves here. read more

This is a recently opened Tokyo Central in Irvine right off of the 5 freeway. Parking can be a bit confusing if you're directionally challenged like me. I somehow ended up in the back alley and confused as heck. Then, I couldn't find the entrance because somehow I went straight to the exit. How embarrassing!! The store inside is well lit and well stocked. But the way how everything is set up is somewhat like a maze. Such is the case with any Tokyo Central store locations. They do a great job ensuring you have to hack through temptations after another. And end up buying things you had no intention to. Like the onigiri stations and ready-to-eat food aisle. The deli section and eye catching cosmetics aisle. By the time I browsed through half of the store, I forgot what I even came to the store for. My mom literally had to remind me!!!! I was also so tempted to purchase all the deserts and things I didn't need!! Like the less than $4/bottle mayo for example. In sum, this is a fun store to browse and pick up quick meals but if you need fresh produce or other items, it's best to go elsewhere. Lovely selection of all kinds of things regardless. I love this place. We are so fortunate to have a place like this to go to. There is so much food for sale, it is perfect place to get a healthy snack. Right now, it is super crowded because of the opening, but they work hard to replenish their food items. For example, they have a sweet and sour shrimp bento with fried rice for on sale for $6.00 Yes! Their beef bowl is excellent, and sometimes on sale for $7.00 If you are like me, I love good food and a bargain price. There is more to explore in this market. I finally came for a visit to this Tokyo Central market after the crazy lines they had during their grand opening. I thought this place was going to be exciting to visit alike the other Tokyo Central locations I've been to, but gosh, it was just an O.K. for me. I was surprised they even have a second Japanese market in the same plaza (see Mitsuwa Marketplace). I do have to give this TC location a thumbs up for having a huge variety of Japanese and Asian grocery items here, but the layout feels a little jam packed there. It almost reminds me of a mesh between trying to give a Trader Joe's and H-Mart vibe - like where's the TC vibe like their other stores? Just didn't feel it here. They had a lot (and I mean a lot!) of sushi and bento boxes at the back of their store. It's almost overwhelming with so much to offer. But they have all the usual ones, like the poke, salmon rolls, chicken teriyaki bento, salmon bento, etc. There's also a buffet that runs until about 3pm (said the friendly security guard). But....BUT...there is NO Food Court here. Probably the main reason I can only give this location 3 stars. I'll come here if I'm in the area, otherwise I'll be at my more local/usual TC locations. The parking can be fairly wild here, with a spot taken right when someone is leaving type of deal. And yeah, there's also some really bad parking there, too - there was a car that parked at a 30-degree angle, occupying two parking spots at a busy hour. I really love this market. I was able to find Japanese purple sweet potatoes that are really delicious. There was a third party vendor sampling rice from Japan and I bought a bag of one of the rices. My son wanted to try red melon ice cream and it's become his new favorite. I also got decaffeinated green tea and many treats my son picked out like rainbow mochi, mango koala, carmel hello panda and rice crackers. From an extensive selection of imported Japanese goods, sushi, and prepackaged meals to home goods, snacks, and desserts, they have it all. The hot/cold food bar is convenient when you don't feel like cooking and need food to go. I love the market, but the parking lot is always so hectic that I usually avoid going on weekends. read more

Wonderful market, I highly recommend coming here. The first time I came here they gave out free snacks, ever since then nothing bad has happened. The moment I walked in here, the vibes and energy were great. The store had a Directory so you can find your things easily. There's also a buffet that has fried chicken and a variety of soups to choose from. The staff here are very friendly and there are staff everywhere to help you find your supplies. At the end of checkout, there are microwaves to heat and make instant ramen. In conclusion, Tokyo Central has many foods to choose from, with great staff to help you. read more

Always a treat to shop at Tokyo Central. In the past I'd stop at the Costa Mesa store but this is closer and offers all the wonderful choices. Easy parking, same attentive staff and of course a great selection. read more

F O O D S E L E C T I O N Stopped by last night on a whim and checked out all the food. Most of the prepared food was picked over and the hot food was gone. The bread was also picked over. Stopped by the next morning and the shelves still hadn't been restocked. There was a fire in the building, so I didn't pick anything up. F O O D The fresh Yasuda looked good and had a lot of great flavors. I was excited to try the Kobe Beef, Salmon, Miso Tuna, and Unagi. I couldn't find hand rolls, but saw it in someone else's pictures. There's some Hawaiian food. They had POG juice, so that's what I ended up buying my first time. Prices are hit and miss - you just have to know what categories to shop like all grocery stores. Bathrooms are clean so far. P A R K I N G Parking is tight. This plaza is new and Tokyo Central is the anchor store, but the lot isn't as big as Mitsuwa's. The store and restaurants have a decent amount of traffic, so parking can be hard to find, but people always seemed to be pulling out when we arrived. read more
