Greetings: My kids and I love sushi, but it is far from a favorite for other members of our family. Tokio Sake is our go-to sushi favorite whenever the stars align for us go scratch that culinary itch. I am by no means a sushi expert, but the freshness and flavors at Tokio Sake are spot on around every visit. Our favorites for each visit include their amazing salad (and the dressing!!!) to share, calamari, and beef dumplings. Each bite a reminder that Tokio Sake chefs know exactly what to do in the kitchen. Rolls are sensational. Mainstream offerings are on point, my personal fave is the Tokio Dragon. Delicate balance across many flavors with a delightful, spicy zip on the finish. Service is a strong suit, as is the decor. Tables, booths, and semi-private eating rooms give you plenty of options two to twelve in your party. It is a lovely place for dinner - it is cozy and atmosphere transforms you to Japan. It has a sushi bar when you can see the sushi chefs meticulously preparing the sushi. The staffs are always friendly and ready to answer questions you have on the menu. Let's talk about the foods! We enjoyed their sushi here. The quality of their sushi was one of the best in the area. While the menu didn't specify gluten-free options, the wait staff was able to help to identify what modifications could be done (where it was possible). Really nicely crafted sushi. Strongly recommend the lemon sushi - forget the name. You eat it whole with the lemon rind. Delicious!! The sushi chefs put a lot of work into their craft here, and it's nice to be able to see them working on it behind the counter if you dine indoors. This neighborhood gem is reborn with the freshest sushi I have ever enjoyed. You could swear the fish were caught that morning until you reflect you are after all in the Chicago suburbs. my friend zoë and I went in at 7:30pm not realizing they closed at 9pm. Tokio Sake was so accommodating we were all alone and our waitress was so sweet. We shared a pot of their green tea to drink which was so delicious i've had too many starbucks green teas in my past this one was a fresh reminder. I've been returning here to three times a month. The owner is a very friendly woman and she encourages us to create our own role with ingredients that we have come to love. The hibachi wonder appetizer is fantastic as well as the spicy tuna rolls. They can make pretty much anything on the menu Without rice so no carb friends can enjoy themselves there as well. Last Saturday, We had a wonderful dinner, great service, at Tokio Sake. During our dinner my husband lost his wedding ring of 62 years at the restaurant. We called this restaurant and every other place we were at that weekend to see if his ring was notice and found. Thanks to an honest, dedicated cleaning employee, my husband's wedding ring was found by their staff member at Tokio Saki. We received a call by the manager to come identify and he returned the ring to my husband. In a world culture of dishonest and self seeking individuals, we found one employee, one restaurant, one dedicated staff that cared enough about one persons heartbreaking loss to search and find. Where has this Crispy Spicy Tuna roll been my WHOLE LIFE??? Deep-fried sushi rice (which could possibly be the best but of rice I've ever consumed), Fresh Spicy Tuna, Microgreens, Wasabi Mayo, Unagi Sauce... talking about something g simple elevated to a new level. I dined here this past Monday night 8/12 because my favorite Japanese restaurant (Sagano in Barrington) is closed on Mondays and I was craving sushi and have been very curious about Tokio Sake for years (and previous clients of mine gave them rave reviews)! In brief, I had a great meal and overall experience here and would definitely come back! I love their huge menu which has a lot of variety and tons of interesting and delicious choices! I had 2 appetizers (Hamachi Wonder and Fresh Off the Boat), for entrees I had the Golden Lion maki roll and about 12-14 pieces of nigiri (eel, salmon roe, flying fish roe, wasabi flying fish roe, salmon, fatty salmon, salmon belly, fatty tuna, and mackerel)! All the food I had that night was fresh, delicious and beautifully presented! The only thing that kind of bummed me out though, was that not all the menu items were in stock like the uni (sea urchin) and tiger eye...but no big deal (I can just hit Sagano or Kaido in Arlington Heights for those)! My server, Min, did a great job taking care of me--she was very pleasant, knowledgeable, quick and efficient! I also loved how personable and engaging their head sushi chef was too (my table was next to the sushi bar)! The interior of the restaurant was spacious, clean and had dark wooden minimalist decor! Last, I loved the restaurant's Deer Park location: they're about 10 minutes or so from home, plus they're in a great shopping plaza that has my favorite stores I shop at like Cold Stone Creamery (which they're next to), Apple Store, Williams & Sonoma, Crate and Barrel, and Barnes & Noble! The sushi and Asian tapas/"small bites" were really good and satisfied my craving for Japanese food. The tuna tower had a little too much sauce on the bottom and was overpowering, but besides that, the rest of the sushi we ordered was creative and yummy. We were served by two waitresses and there seemed to be a bit of miscommunication among them throughout the night. It would get confusing because they'd both ask us for our orders one after another. We had made a reservation which it turned out was not necessary. We were greeted by a friendly, smiling hostess. But it's best to judge sushi, first on its freshness. So: very fresh fish. Our server even pointed out that a cut of tuna was especially fresh, recommending it. She was right! A second test might be creativity: I had the butterfly roll (tuna, salmon and jalapeno, marked as being spicy) and yakitori (two skewers of chicken with teriyaki)--expertly prepared, delicious and, again fresh. My wife and I really enjoyed the sushi here. There were several things that we had not seen at the "typical" sushi restaurant, and we always like trying something different. I travel a lot for work. I'm a total foodie and love to try local fare (no chains), so I rarely ever go to the same place twice. This was one of those rare occasions. The first night I ordered (take out) the Butterfly role and the Tokio Salad. The role was SO good and the salad was huge. This role is listed on their menu under "spicy", but it is not. At all. I love ginger, so my beef with sushi, whether take out or dine in, is that they never give me enough. That was not the case here. I opened my box to a heaping portion, along with a cute little dish for my wasabi and soy sauce mixture. My total was $23.49 inc tax. Having such a fabulous experience, I just had to go back the second night. Ordered the Deer Park Crazy role and the Spicy Tuna Seaweed Salad. This salad WAS spicy and delicious, as was the role. Was happy to find an ample amount of ginger again, along with my perfect little soy sauce dish. Total this night was $28.85 inc tax. Since I had take out both nights, I had limited interaction with staff. There was a different woman who helped me each night, and both were equally warm and friendly. Updated Review: I went here last night with my husband. The service was much slower and inattentive as previous visits. However, the hostess at the entrance were very positive and welcoming and we came and left. They sat us down by the bar and the first chair I sat in was creaking and moving back in forth. I decided to switch it out for the chair next to me, the hostess noticed and told me that they would look into the chair at a later time. However they just put it back where I t They no longer have the Sunrise roll (salmon,tobiko,miso sauce) or the various roe appetizer(tobiko,ikura,quail egg,masago). The closest to the sunrise roll was the orange dragon. It was tasty but not as good (in my opinion). For their specialty rolls, almost everything had the hot pepper next to the name (spicy), which I am not a fan of. read more

I don't often give a place a 5-star review after having only been there once but we were completely enamored with Tokio Sake and so impressed I'm going to go for it! The decor is lovely and I like their table vignette seating areas along one of the walls where groups of 5 - 8ish can be seated. They have a menu full of fantastic sounding dishes & sushi options with some unique rolls so it took us a while to decide. We opted for the Cucumber Avocado Salad to start which was full of delicious tangy crunch. Then we shared the Rainbow Roll & the Samba Fire Roll. The rolls we had were honestly the best sushi rolls we have had anywhere. Granted we are not sushi aficionados by any means but we do enjoy sushi regularly and were incredibly impressed by the quality, flavors and with the Samba Fire Roll, the uniqueness of the flavor combinations. I'm sorry I don't recall the name of our server but the young man was the perfect combination of upbeat friendly, helpful and attentive. I am sad to only give this restaurant 2 stars because it's been my favorite sushi place for years. We have frequented this place quite a bit and the one thing that I could always say is that it is consistent. Not tonight unfortunately. To be honest I probably would not have even done a review but when I was throwing away our garbage I came across the receipt and took a double take of the price. I was sooooo disappointed in my meal. I got the Bibimbap with an egg. One of my favorite things about this dish is the seasoned rice which becomes crispy on the bottom. Now as take out I know they aren't going to send me a stone bowl but I must say I was surprised at the way this dish was done. There was a fairly large scoop of unseasoned plain white rice. There was a handful of cut up romaine lettuce. There were shredded carrots, some kind of squash noodles (I think), marinated cooked mushrooms, a serving spoon size of cooked plain spinach. Also some marinated fairly sweet cucumbers and a very overcooked fried egg. It also came with a very small container with some kind of dressing or oil. It all fit in a take out container and it was very plain with little to no taste. I think what upset me is we paid $19 for a scoop of white rice and a few vegetables. I found another hidden gem of a sushi place. I say hidden as this is on the back side of a strip mall and unless you're made aware of its existence, you can miss it. Again, thanks to Yelp in helping me find this place. It is actually large, has plenty of table seating, some private areas and of course the sushi bar/counter itself. The ambiance is decorated as one would hope for a sushi place and playing traditional, Japanese music. (it bothers me when I'm listening to some acid rock at a sushi place... it just kills it for me) On the menu you'll find the normal assortment and familiar names, along with several uniquely named / combinations. I always like going with some of my familiar roles as this is how I gauge sushi place to sushi place to which I typically select something along the lines of a Philly, Spicy Tuna, and Spider. Then, if they have something unique I'll try that too! Coming here on at least three occasions, I've NOT had a bad experience yet. I usually make it here in mid afternoon, so I can't comment how good the service is when they are packed, but for me the service has always been great. I've also been lucky and my order comes out rather quickly. The roles are packed nicely and don't fall apart on the way from plate to mouth as some places do. The ingredients are always very fresh and cut just right for the role. I personally favor their salmon & tuna. This is not to say the other fish is bad, as I've yet to have anything tasting "fishy" or off base. The only thing I would comment on is that their "spicy" is not overly spicy. Even when you make this clear to them, they still don't adjust it by that much. I've resorted to asking for more wasabe and even there I have to prod for a larger portion. I don't live near this location, and it has become my lunch spot when I get over in this direction to stop by the Apple store. So, it's almost becoming a tradition, when I go to the Apple store here, the kinds know we're having sushi for lunch! read more
