This is a tough review because I really try to find the positive and highlight the good as much as I can, however on this trip to Kawa Sushi, which was our first experience, turned out to be really rough. I should mention that even with all the issues we encountered, I write that off to poor process and management and don't hold the only waitress working accountable and still left her a 18-20% tip. The ambiance when we walked in was a quiet family restaurant. The restaurant was empty except for one other table of 2. There were a few walk in picking up to go orders during our 1 and half hour dining experience. The restaurant was clean and tables, booths, chairs looked in good condition which is great to see. Honestly the food was ok, not special but certainly not bad. However there are so many similar restaurants competing for the same customers, it all comes down to service along with the food. So, the issues we encountered: They are severely understaffed. Most of the time we dined, us 4 patrons of the restaurant were the only ones in the front of house. I would count 5 mins where no employees were in front many times while we were there. I'm on the side of small business and the difficult times everyone faces with work shortages etc, but you really can't run a restaurant with no one up front. There was a sushi chef up front who actually seated us, which he was also in the back most of our time dining. Our waitress was helpful when she was available. I don't fault her for being gone from the front, I don't know what kept her busy and away from the dining area front of house, so I won't speculate. I'm sure she was trying her best and had no control of the situation. The next issue was the main problem, I ordered a combo hibachi with chicken and steak. Gave the meat temp for steak and also mentioned I'm allergic to shrimp, so I know the waitress wrote the order down correctly. My dish arrived with chicken and shrimp, I mentioned that I was allergic to shrimp and had ordered steak in the combo. With only 4 people dining in, I'm not sure how the kitchen got this order wrong, but again I'll give leeway to the kitchen. However after hearing the other table of two ask what was taking so long to get their order, and waiting at least 10 minutes to get my replacement meal, I was given a dish with cold chicken, like it had been sitting too long while they cooked the steak? At this point I was over this experience, but had to wait another 5-10 minutes for someone to come back to the front of the restaurant to ask for a box to take my food home. I wish I could say we'd give Kawa Sushi another chance, like we do with most restaurants. Restaurants have off days too, but with so much competition in the area, we might just stick to ones we know.

AYCE was great for lunch. It was a very clean and inviting atmosphere. Only thing is AYCE lunch menu does not include nigiri. Service was friendly as well.

Sushi Lunch Platter - comes with soup, rainbow roll and a variety of nigiri sushi

Major bonuses: vegan…read moreoptions are present, and the waitstaff are helpful in generally checking on what is and is not vegan. You know, the kind of thing that might be important to people who want to eat a sushi restaurant when you don't really want to be eating fish or milk. It helps that it's just south of the Crystal Lake downtown, in an area where many restaurants and businesses are. There were a few things (Fried onion dip) where it looked questionably non-vegan and the waitstaff were helpful in pointing out that the onions were fine, but the dip wasn't. Which is fine with me! Really, you don't have to veganize everything. I don't expect magic accommodations. Just don't snow me with claiming things aren't vegan, or at least be able to tell me if things are. I have reasonably low expectations. I want to eat, I want to not get sick from it, and preferably I'd like to enjoy it. I am easy to please. Sushi was reasonably well prepared, and also came out quickly. It was nice to be able to order a roll or two at a time and then have them come to you! However, was the AYCE worth the cost? The jews worth the susheeze (I don't know where I'm going with this made up phrase)? I gotta say no, dawg. I'm pretty sure that as a vegetarian the cost of everything I got was actually way more expensive than the amount I ate. I guess I'm not the volume eater anymore. C'est la vie. I'd still come back, just with their AYCE price so high maybe just getting rolls is the way to go - and I don't see anything wrong with that.

During our visit, we tried several sushi rolls, pork ramen, takoyaki, fried scallops, edamame, and miso soup. Everything was delicious, and the sushi was especially fresh. Be sure to save room for dessert--the ice cream bar is the perfect way to end the meal! The restaurant itself has beautiful decor and a welcoming atmosphere. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. If you're looking for quality sushi and a fun dining experience in the area, Sushi U is definitely worth a visit.

Cluttered with boxes of supplies and junk. The food is really cheap at least. A restaurant that is bare bones. It's one of those strip mall Chinese restaurants that is similar to all the others. This one makes the others look fantastic though. Had a part of the dining area closed off. There were only a few available tables. It's about $8 for an entree. The one here for vegetarians is the Tofu Vegetables. Sounds generic. This has mushrooms and pea pods. A lot more to get if wanting something more authentic. There's pad Thai as well as many others. For sure it actually is one of the best Asian restaurants around here. It's located in the plaza with the post office. They're closed Tuesdays.

We got the order delivered by uber because that was the only option for delivery China dragon had. Our order was missing items I called the restaurant asking if it was there and got left behind. I had to repeat what I had in front of me as food twice and then was cut off and told it's An uber issue and I have to deal with them! I WAS going to ask for them to make the items missing and I would have picked it up - instead after that statement I was hung up on. We will no longer be ordering from China dragon. Horrible customer service is not ok.

The food itself is consistent with the others - obviously try some of the different sushi bowls, but my go-to is a poke bowl. Super large portions and a really good fish to other ingredients in the bowl ratio. Where Barrington lacks is the service. We made a reservation for 7pm, but when we walked in, they said it would still be another 15-20 minutes unless we wanted to sit on the rooftop... while it was drizzling. (at least that made me laugh at how unfortunate of a question that was) I get that certain nights are busy, but what's the point of making a reservation? We had to wait it out in the tiny little front area, which is definitely not big enough for people to wait in, and finally got a table upstairs. Our server was nice enough, but it took quite a long time to get two glasses of wine, so we didn't bother ordering more. Another thing I don't love, and this isn't the staff's fault - but the only way to get upstairs is an elevator. It's just one floor up, but it made me feel pretty unsafe not seeing any stairs in case there was something that went wrong.
