After reading the reviews I was very excited to try Sushi Yoru! The dining room provides a comfortable, small business feel. Our waitress was kind and brought out complimentary miso soup halfway through our meal. While I love the family aspect of this business, I was left wanting more from the sushi quality. Sushi pizza: standout! Fun idea and good flavor. Not fish forward if that's what you're looking for Miso soup: semi warm and too salt forward for my taste Nigiri: unfortunately first bite tasted fishy with the tuna...I also placed an order for yellowtail and was told the kitchen had none for the evening. Great food here! My only complaint is that they need online ordering, an online menu, and hire more staff. I ordered one poke bowl and it took 30 minutes, Another time I ordered 2 rolls and that also took about 30 minutes, whereas I can get 2 entire meals at another Japanese restaurant in 15 minutes. I think it's easy to go there for a quick meal and miss Yoru. It's a tiny restaurant. There are two employees. The hostess, server/waitress, and cashier is the owner. She does A LOT. She is extremely friendly and polite. I can only imagine how tired she is at the end of the day. The sushi menu is limited and simple. They have a unique item called the sushi burrito. It's a sushi roll wrapped in seaweed but isn't cut into pieces. It was good, but it was different holding an entire sushi roll. Other rolls I tried were the California and Philly. You also get soup and rangoons. It doesn't look like much, but you should try it. The food is good and prices are reasonable. You'll definitely enjoy the friendly service. read more

Absolutely the BEST! Last fall, 7 year old asked if we could try every sushi restaurant in Lake Zurich to review and compare along with a few in other towns. Ever since we have only come back here! The lady owner greets my daughter like a long lost grand daughter, she is so sweet. The food is awesome and SO reasonable plus we never get out of here without free soup, plus free drinks, rice or appetizer- they are TOO generous! The tuna and the salmon dragon are my favorites (fresh, delicious) plus the Bimi Bop salad with chopped tuna, salmon, avocado, rice, fresh greens and spicy mayo is HUGE and a rediculously good deal! I was very impressed by this sushi place! My mom and I stopped here on our way to the Jack O Lantern World experience. I THINK THIS IS THE BEST SUSHI I'VE EVER HAD. It is a small place, but the food is EXCELLANT. We ordered the caterpillar roll and the deep fried Yoru roll. Both were very flavorful and fresh. A gentleman came in to pick up an order and said his kids love the sushi pizza. Never have we heard of this, so we ordered one, and it was OUTSTANDING! Ordered carryout from here this evening and I'm still debating where the stars should land. There were some really great things that made it a positive experience; the woman who took my order over the phone was very nice. The food was ready timely, the portions were great and we even got 2 cups of miso soup and some gyoza that we didn't order!! The salmon sunset roll was delicious; it had a really unique flavor with the seared salmon on top! I also appreciated that the ramen bowl toppings were packaged separately as not to get soggy before consumption. On the other hand, we were really disappointed in the ramen bowl and the tuna dragon roll. The ramen bowl didn't have any flavor. I ended up adding some salt but it really needed a lot of it, and more than that. The fried chicken on it was cooked well as was the ramen, but I had hopes of that dish bursting with flavor and it left me wanting. The tuna dragon roll felt a bit less fresh - the tuna itself and also the seaweed used. I'd certainly like to try this place again for an ultimate decision but as of now I'm settling in the middle. Sushi Yoru is located in a corner unit in a strip mall (between a Jimmy John's and a Dentist's office). It's not the cleanest place you'll visit and it's pretty small, but the people are nice and the servings are generous for the price. Their menu is small. They have one nice laminated version and then some photocopied versions for you to order from. Upon seating, you are given a cup of water in a styrofoam cup. Service was pretty slow and disorganized but the lady taking care of us was really pleasant. The sushi chef was also really nice. The flavors are average on the traditional rolls, but a bit better on their speciality (Yoru roll). We were given complimentary miso soup (tasty but only lukewarm) and complimentary gyoza (Average and reheated in a microwave and also only lukewarm). The chef works at a feverish pace as he's making carry out orders in between dine in. I never saw any hand washing occur and the server also prepares food, so not really a fan of that. No gloves are worn by anyone. The prices were really fair for what we got and we were given a bowl of cherries for dessert which I thought was nice. With a few improvements, this could be a really great place, but for now, I would say food is average, cleanliness below average, workers above average. read more

The owners are so sweet and attentive and the prices especially lunch special is hard to beat. Best thing of all is the quality of fish and food overall. Worth the wait! Literally, I wrote this post as I waited for the owner, a wise tenured Japanese man, who opened this place 20+ years ago. He crafts his sushi with care and artistry, you can see it in the presentation. This place is legit! I can say this because I have been to Japan and several dozen other sushi places. Just watch how he prepares mackerel sashimi, he soaks it in lemon and minces ginger and onion. The best I have ever had! It's a small unassuming place, but clean and friendly.
