Step in the entrance of Tokio Pub and you are immediately greeted with fun decor and concept for an evening out. We enjoyed our first visit overall, but left with a bit to be desired Service: one of the major disappointments of the visit. We sat down and ordered 2 entrees almost immediately and were left waiting over 45 minutes for our food, apparently due to a special event. It felt like the kitchen and waitstaff could have balanced the demands of the two spaces better Food reviews: -Beef sizzling rice: nice savory dish overall and would order again. Beef was the only major let down as it was particularly chewy. I also wish there was more texture contrast from the hot pot, but as the diner you had to stir fairly frequently to incorporate the plain white rice the dish was sitting on, which impacted the ability to develop a crispy rice bottom -Ramen: husband liked the flavor and all the individual elements. His only comment was that the portion was a bit small for the price, and some elements were sparse
Tokio Pub is one of the better Lettuce Entertain You spots thanks to its great service, cozy vibe and a very simple menu that delivers big. The miso soup feels like a warm, comforting welcome to the meal. The Samurai Fries, with their togarashi spice and tobanjan heat, are addictive and perfect for sharing. They're hot! The Rainbow roll layers tuna, salmon, yellowtail, crab, cucumber, and avocado into a colorful, beautifully balanced bite, while the Volcano roll brings a bolder edge with tuna, avocado, cilantro, tempura fresnos, jalapeño, and chili oil that builds just the right amount of heat without overpowering the fish. Together, these dishes exemplify exactly what makes Tokio Pub special: creative Japanese pub fare that's fun, different than anything out there, and consistently delicious.
First impressions: Ambiance was okay. We were seated at a a table so very close to another table that is was a bit uncomfortable. Thinking back, I should have asked for our party to be moved (or the table be pushed further away). Food: The menu was limited. We ordered the pork belly buns - those were 5 stars. EXCELLENT! The pot stickers were worth ordering too - very tasty. The rolls, however were just "eh" (unremarkable). We ordered the rainbow roll, red dragon roll and the spicy tuna roll. Value: Our bill for the four of us with 3 appetizers (2 pork buns and 1 potstickers), 1 alcoholic beverage, 2 sodas, 3 sushi rolls, 2 ice cream desserts, 1 beignet order (which included 4 donut holes), and 4 coffees was $160. Service: It took awhile before a server came but she was very nice. I do need to mention though... when we got the bill we asked for it to be split in half. But each check was significantly more that what it should have been. They corrected it but I felt I needed to mention that. What if we didn't catch it the mistake? Parking: There is a lot that is shared by a few other establishments. We had 6:30 reservations on a busy Saturday night. We only had to wait about 5 minutes before a space freed up. Other: the bathrooms are out of the way. You literally have to walk through another restaurant and up a long flight of stairs to get to them.
Came here strictly for the ramen burger. But first, the logistics. Tokio Pub is located across Woodfield Mall, in the same building as Shaw's Crab House. They have a separate entrance, but the restaurants are connected together inside, so either entrance would work. Ambiance: classy/casual. Inside Tokio Pub, it's quant and small, with a few round tables for larger party of people, a few tables and benches, and three or four high tops near the bar. Decór has Asian influences on it, will some wall posters of Japanese characters and art. Service: great! There's a host(ess) that greets you right at the Tokio Pub entrance. On this Friday night, at around 7, we got seated right away. We got seated near the door, and despite the triple-door entrance, every time someone entered the restaurant, there was a brisk Chicago January gust of wind. The server was gracious and offered to reseat us, and we ended up away from the entrance/exit and at the high-table near the bar. Food: probably the worst out of the three categories. To sum it up, instagram/Yelp worthy pictures, but way too salty and gimmicky. But I understand it's a fusion restaurant, so you have to be creative with your menu. We went with: - Hot rock with ahi tuna -- super-hot rock on a bed of sea salt, you cook your raw tuna on top. Takes about 10-20 seconds to get it to the desired medium consistency. It was fun, but the fun didn't last too long. Seven pieces, and for the two of us, it was gone in a matter of minutes. - Bang-bang calamari -- I'm a fan of bang-bang sauce, and calamari. This appetizer was decent. The calamari had a nice crunch, and the hot peppers added the perfect spice to the dish. Cilantro for garnish, and presentation-wise, it looked great. The sauce was rather salty, and the dish itself, looked like onion rings, as they only used calamari rings, and no tentacles. - Rainbow roll -- when I'm at a place that offers sushi, I usually gravitate toward rainbow rolls, because it offered a combination of fish. This one had tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. Overall, it was good. It came with a garnish of sweet sauce which was good. - Ramen burger -- this was what we came for. It is a burger, cooked to what you want, for us, medium, with ramen as the top and bottom "bun" of the burger. The ramen was grilled/cooked, and offered barely ample structure, to keep the burger not in a complete globby mess. It came with a soy molasses sauce that was so darn salty. Thank God they gave the two of us a carafe of water, as we needed it. The burger came with almost unsalted fries, which OK. We had to finish the burger fast, as the ramen-bun was getting soggy by the minute. Definitely a gimmicky menu item, worth taking a picture of, but I would not be getting this or really recommend it to anyone. Big knock-down of stars: when we got the bill, there was a 3% restaurant fee. Upon asking the waiter, he just smirked and said he would take it off. Apparently, as of Jan 2025, they are still charging COVID-19 fees. COVID was ~5 or 6 years ago yo. Imagine the amount of money this place gets from the unsuspecting patrons via this nickel and dime-ing. Look, I am all about supporting restaurant staff and tipping, to what I believe, generously, but don't impose us these random obsolete fees like you're a Ticketmaster of restaurants. TLDR; food was OK. I would not go back again, but I tried it at least. Huge red-flag for subtlety charging a COVID-19 restaurant fee in Jan 2025. BATHROOM REVIEW: Let's hope you don't really need to pee really bad, cuz it's a long way. There's a connecting corridor to Shaw's Crab House, where you go through to the bathrooms. Up a few flights of stairs, then down another hallway, you'll find the Men's and Women's bathrooms. Since the bathrooms are in the Shaw's Crab House side of the building, it shares the same 50s vibe decór. Inside you will see old posters as decoration, and several urinals and stalls. Everything was clean, including the bathroom stalls. Sit or squat? Sit!
Started with the hot rocks filet mignon and ahi tuna. Both were great and I loved the interactiveness of cooking my own food on the rocks. Plus, the garlic ginger sauce/marinade that came with was excellent! Next were the rangoon and volcano rolls. The rangoon roll was warm which I liked and tasted a little like a crab rangoon though less cream cheesey/crabby. The volcano roll was very light and fresh. There were spicy peppers on top that I passed on, so the pieces I had weren't spicy. Last was the ramen. This was spicier than expected (nothing too crazy but had a kick) but I loved everything in it. It also wasn't too heavy and was the perfect ending to my meal. Vibe was casual and service was attentive and friendly. I would definitely return.
Cute and modern restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. I had the sushi here before and I think it's okay but it's better than their ramen. The ramen broth was pretty salty. It had a good amount of protein and noodles but the broth was okay. The bang bang calamari is actually one of my favorite dishes here. It's flavorful and crunchy. Our server was great. Friendly and professional.
Went for happy hour! Great service and great food. Will be back. Very clean restaurant and enjoyed the Christmas vibes
I came here recently on 2 different occasions. I remember the one thing I remembered about Tokio Pub in the past were the beignets. They were soo delicious and melted in your mouth. However, things may have changed and they don't come out hot anymore so it's not tasty. Customer Service: The staff here are friendly, but it can be a little slow when it comes to time to get the check, pay and leave. Washroom: It is shared with Shaw's Crab House and requires walking up the stairs to get there or can opt for the elevator (I think there is one) Food Ramen Burger ($15): It sounded neat to come with the ramen bun and looks cool, but it was bland to have a ramen bun. I wouldn't recommend it unless it was purely for pictures. Beef Sizzling Rice ($15): beef tenderloin, sautéed onions & shiitake mushrooms, egg yolk, crispy shallots, red chili threads. If I'd order anything again, this would be it. It may be on the saltier side depending on how you like your flavor. This was the more flavorful food item that I ordered. Steak Ramen: The ramen came out warm but it was soo salty! If all the ramens taste like this one, I wouldn't recommend ordering ramen here. The steak tastes okay but the ramen itself was just too salty and not great at all. It didn't taste like broth was used, maybe just a seasoning package or a ton of salt was added. Dessert Beignet ($6): sweet chocolate filled pastry puffs rolled in sugar. It tastes good when it's fresh. The recent time I went, it was not warm and didn't taste that great. I'll check out other restaurants prior to coming back here.
Opted for takeout from this place and ordered the Beef Sizzling Rice, which I did enjoy overall. The shiitake mushrooms were a particular highlight. While the experience would likely have been better if I had dined in, I do plan to return and explore more dishes. Tip: If you're doing takeout, note that the entrance is the same as Shaw's Crab House.
The ramen burger was worth to try and unique. The beef patty was juicy and well seasoned. The sautéed onions compliment the burger very well
It was decent. We stopped here for dinner. We were seated right away and we're brought water. Drink order was taken. My wife had a $5 (Taco Tuesday special) Margarita. She enjoyed it. I tried it. A bit sweet for my taste. We ordered the Chicken Potstickers for an appetizer. Very nice. For dinner, we ordered: - Red Dragon Roll - Filet Mignon Japanese Hot Rock - Roasted Tofu and Shiitake Mushroom Ramen My wife enjoyed the Hot Rock meal, though not very filling. We loved the Red Dragon Roll. Note too that they use minimal rice in the roll. I was happy for that. I had the Ramen. I really liked the Soy Marinated Egg half. The rest of the bowl was just so-so in my opinion. I would come back for the Ramen, though their other varieties may be better. The broth wasn't very tasty or inspiring.

We checked in a few minutes before our 5:30p reservation and were seated right away -- not many diners, even offered our choice of tables. Menus arrived as we were seated, water arrived shortly after, but no greeting, no server, nothing. Another couple came in after us, got seated, greeted, ordered, and were eating while we still sat completely unacknowledged. After 15 minutes we told the host we were giving up. She looked surprised we hadn't been helped, even though our table was less than 15 feet from the host stand and directly in her line of sight. Most of the time she was lingering near the bar chatting with other employees. No apology -- just 'I'll get a manager.' Several minutes later the manager arrived. We explained what happened, but again no apology, no offer to fix it, no 'please stay, we'll take care of you.' Just 'that shouldn't have happened' and she'd talk to her staff. That's the corporate version of shrugging. We'd trekked a long way from the city only to be let down by basic service not happening at all. This is the kind of failure people don't expect from a group as large and well‑trained as Lettuce, and at this point I'm wondering if I should lower my expectations. read more
I frequent Shaw's, and am also a huge fan of Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants. However, I am not sure why I don't come to Tokio Pub more often. I definitely will start! For starters, the vibe feels casual and relaxed here and the drinks are expertly shaken and potent. Our server was wonderfully attentive, helpful and fun, despite being the bar tender that night too. I had the rangoon roll and teriyaki pork tacos. Everything tasted great; perfect presentation, temperatures, and spices to make this a meal worth returning for. I have tried the filet mignon hot rock in the past and it is a fun app to try, at least once. Our only complaint is the walk (Or elevator ride) upstairs to the restrooms. I wish there was one on the first floor. (Admittedly, it is not as easy to navigate after 2 martinis) ha! I will be back for Happy Hour some time, from 3 to 5. read more

Food - my mom and I each ordered a ramen which they "specialize" in. The worst ramen I've ever had - drowned in soy sauce, barely any noodles, and awful presentation. Definitely eating some more food after leaving. Service and ambiance were both just fine. Pretty empty for dinner time but I'm guessing that's because people know to avoid it read more

I visited Tokio Pub for the first time and ordered the potstickers, edamame, and calamari as starters. Unfortunately, all the starters were just okay--nothing exceptional. It felt like they tried to reinvent the calamari and edamame, but I think they would have been better off keeping them traditional. We also tried the ramen burger, but it lacked flavor; the fries ended up being the highlight of that dish. The concept is interesting, but that's about it. The Rangoon roll was also just okay. Overall, i don't think I'll be returning. read more

In town from Southern California, went to lunch and ordered a Rainbow roll and Miso soup. The waitress was amazing, so nice and informative. The atmosphere was great and I was extremely excited to try the sushi. The roll came out with incredibly small portions of fish on top. ( which I am very grateful for now after tasting it it) the first bite I had, the fish smelled and tasted so fishy. If you are a sushi enthusiast you know good sushi does not smell or taste like fish. I was hesitant to try the next piece as it was a different fish. That one was ok, but since the horrible fist bite nothing tasted right after that. Hours later I am still belching up bad fishy taste in my mouth I can just puke. In addition to that they add a three % fee to your check for a service fee???? Great charge me for your bad fish and a servive fee. Update: still very sick from the bad fish! read more

Honestly, I don't know how Tokio Pub has less than 4 stars. I went here with my boyfriend for the first time a months ago this summer. We made a reservation, but we didn't need one - there were plenty of open tables and no wait time. Our server was very attentive and went over some dishes without us even asking. It was dimly lit inside and they had a really cute half indoor half outdoor patio. We ordered the red dragon roll, vegetable dumpling ramen, and the seared filet & shiitake mushroom ramen. I was pleasantly surprised with all the food - it was delicious! The ramen was not too salty, had a lot of vegetables, tasty dumplings, and was very filling. The red dragon roll was more on the simple side for a sushi roll, but for a simple roll it tasted super good. I'm only docking 1 star because of the pricing - the sushi roll was $16, vegetable dumpling ramen was $14, and seared filet & shiitake mushroom ramen was $15. I thought these prices were too high for the meals, especially the sushi roll. Nonetheless, I highly recommend trying their ramen here - there aren't a lot of good ramen places in the suburbs, and this one definitely is a spot you don't want to miss! read more

Got a chance to stop by last Tuesday for a date night with my husband for a belated anniversary celebration. We haven't been able to get out much alone since having twins. Let me just start by saying - it was such a perfect date night. From the food to the service. Everything was phenomenal! It was taco Tuesday and $5 margaritas! We tried the yuzu and passion fruit margarita. Both were fantastic, but I liked the passion fruit more. For our appetizer we got the bang bang calamari. It was lightly breaded and crispy! Be forewarned it is a tad bit spicy for those that might not eat spicy foods. A similar sauce is use in their tiger shrimp tacos. Both were delicious! A must try when you're here - the hot rocks!! It was so good we put in another order for the filet hot rocks. The meat was so tender and it cooked perfectly. The rock is 500 degrees so definitely be careful. The salt, pickling, and sauce that it comes with is the perfect combination with the filet. We got a pork belly ramen to share. The waitress planned the whole meal out perfectly. They split the ramen in the kitchen and just made it so much easier to share! My husband described it as a clean soup ramen and I agree. Just light and delicious. The soup isn't as dark and heavy in flavor as some other ones you might've tried. We really enjoyed it. We finished our date night with banana crème crepes. We loved it, but for others it may be a little strong on the alcohol side. Let's just say you can definitely taste the rum. Hah Let me finish off by saying - we will definitely be back. Tokio Pub is a must go if you find yourself Woodfield adjacent. The staff was fun and engaging and helpful when choosing menu items. The food more than speaks for itself by being both tasty and reasonably priced. The spicy tuna crispy rice was some of the best we've ever had and we are still dreaming about the ramen! First time here and loved it! Very different ramen than I'm used to (lighter and less salty), but the filet/mushroom ramen and pork belly ramen were both really good. We also had the tuna and filet hot rocks, and it was fun and tasty. Sushi roll and pork belly buns were also really fresh, light, and delicious. To summarize, we tried basically everything and it was all top notch. Fun fact: They share a kitchen with Shaw's Crab House, so you can have both menus at your table.and order from both restaurants. read more
My dad and I dined in during happy hour in the beginning of April. Certain foods on the main menu were half off if it was typed in red or had a certain symbol by it. We started with drinks. My dad got a beer while I got the In Bloom cocktail. Sweet and fresh, I recommend! For food we got tacos, the Nacho Tacos and Crispy Fish. We had three each. They were both good, but I liked the Nacho Taco more. Not too much of a fan of the nacho itself that comes with it, but I guess it's all in the name. We also had the Rainbow Roll. That was yummy as well and with the happy hour price it was a great deal. *Make sure to check in on Yelp! You get a free order of potstickers when you buy an entree!* I thought it wouldn't count during happy hour but it does. I've been to Tokio Pub maybe 3 or 4 times but thought I'd update my review for COVID times! Fun right?! I went on Friday, February 12th 2021 and they are currently open for indoor dining at 25% capacity. Temp checks when you first walk in, as well as a QR code to view menu online (they do also have physical menus at the table if you prefer). There are tall, clear plastic partitions between booths and all staff wears masks. I don't think our waiter wore gloves but the person who took away our dishes definitely did. We also got our own stoppered bottle of water. I was a little disappointed that during COVID happy hour is suspended, I was looking forward to half price drinks, but whatcha gonna do... Food was delicious as always. It was my first time ordering the bang bang calamari and holy cow it was delicious! The coating was light and crispy, the sauce creamy and flavorful with a bit of tang and heat. Of course will be back! read more

Very trendy, laid back and chill ambience. Service was great. The hostess opened the door for us and promptly seated us. Our server was attentive and very nice. We even had another server strike up a small conversation with my friend and I cause we were getting into the movie that was playing. Food was delicious. We ordered small since we had a movie to get to soon. My only gripe is that the menu could be a little bit more extensive, but other than that this place was very nice Asian fusion restaurant and bar. A nice stop if you're in the streets of woodfield. read more
