A sneak peek of Tok-Yu's Seafood Misono and Japanese rice.
    Vero Z.

Let's keep this short and sweet (and numbered, so it's easier for you to digest [pun intended]). I love Tok-Yu Sushi Bar and these are the 5 reasons why: 1. Japanese food is love. But CHEAP and authentic-tasting Japanese food is FOREVER! My first trip to Tok-Yu has proven that this place is legit! Unlike most Japanese restos you find in the midst of Makati or Fort, this humble little Jap place delivers good food with reasonable prices! I got to try their Seafood Misono and it was divine! Considering the entrée was seafood, I have to note that everything tasted fresh. It was seasoned beautifully and it was enough to feed 2 people. And it only cost me 200 bucks (complete with rice and drinks)!!! *AMAZING* 2. Their extensive Jap menu will make your head spin! I mean, I did! They've got sushi, sashimi, donburi bowls, tempura, ramen and a ton more! Pretty solid list of Japanese food, if you ask me. 3. The place. Tok-Yu is unlike any other Jap food spot. It looks like an air-conditioned carinderia that offers authentic Japanese food. I don't think the place is Instagrammable, really. But that's what makes it special! You concentrate on the food and not on how cute the walls are or how perfect the lighting is. You come in, you order, you eat, you talk about how good the food is, you pay and you go. Sounds so... medieval, right? 4. Tok-Yu is a great place for big groups! Because the food is relatively cheap compared to other Japanese restaurants, it's more practical to take your family or barkada if you just want to pig out on Jap food. Their serving sizes are mostly good for two to three people, although their rice bowls are good for solo. 5. The service is great. In spite of the fact that the place fills up quickly (especially during lunch breaks), the servers work fast and efficiently. Mind you, groups of four or more come in so managing orders, table changes, clean-up and everything else in between could get harrowing. But the people of Tok-Yu maintain a light and sunny disposition! Totally refreshing! Arigato goshaimashita, Tok-Yu! Most definitely coming back again!

Tok-Yu is a ridiculous place to go to. It's ridiculous that a plain, almost shabby little resto in the Pioneer Center complex could have such wonderful Japanese food. It's ridiculous that, with all the hype Kapitolyo gets as a foodie haven, this gem is hiding in plain sight. And it's absolutely ridiculous that this place is incredibly cheap. I mean, the food is so good to cost this low. It's ridiculous that I only paid P190 for a Special Sushi Plate with Salmon Sashimi. It's ridiculous that a plate of hot, yummy Shrimp Tempura only costs P170, and their rice bowls barely break P150. It's ridiculous that all of these items taste soooooooooo good. It's absolutely bonkers. It doesn't make any sense. It's ridiculous. I'm going back here again and again.

All of this for just PhP150!

The pleasure of having Japanese food on the cheap is, well, priceless. If you don't quite understand what I mean, try having lunch at Tokyu. Or dinner. Or merienda. Whatever or whenever it is, just try it. Don't let the odd name discourage you, nor the simple, unassuming look and accommodations dishearten your stomach. They have good and relatively fresh seafood that makes for wonderful sushi, maki and sashimi. Their tempura is good, favored by those who work in nearby offices. But their sukiyaki, holy cow! It is one of those bowls of good omen that I dream of having when I'm in dire need of comfort food. It's so delicious and filling it's almost villainous! O remember having terrible stomach cramps once and despite feeling crippled to even make my way to the car, I could have very well crawled my way to Tokyu just to have a bowl of sukiyaki. Half the bowl and I was feeling so fine and mighty, I was doing cartwheels on my way out. Mental cartwheels though. Didn't want to risk having the sukiyaki leaving my system through my mouth, would I? Now THAT would be a terrible disservice and disgrace.

Ooma is a play on the Japanese word "umai," meaning "good" but for me Ooma is more like OOMAGOD!…read moreEverything here is soooo GOOD!!! Ooma is a well known Japanese restaurant that offers fusion dishes that fits the Filipino palate. They have three locations in Manila but we decided to dine at their SM Megamall branch. We were told to expect long lines at all Ooma locations but we got lucky to be seated right away. The hostess greeted us right promptly and the entire staff were all friendly, fast, and efficient. We were very pleased with excellent customer service provided. The food? OOMAGOD! I loved every single dish we ordered. From sushi to soft shell crab to hangar steak to dessert. I didn't bother knowing the names because I just went on chomping and devouring every dish brought to our table. They tasted as good as they looked. It's just WOW! Amazing food yet very affordable. Highly recommended!

Japanese resto on the third or fourth floor of this mall and the place is similar to a small sushi place here in Toronto with only about 10-15 tables that extend inside the mall so you can 'people watch' while you munch on some fresh well-handled ingredients. The chicken teriyaki dinner was served on a bed of fresh leafy greens with bomb teriyaki sauce drizzled on top that can activate salivation in an instant. The sushi rolls were compact with flavour and filling that is heavily squished between master hands and a wooden roller perfecting a trip coming to an end in my beautiful city. I forget which ones we ordered but we came near closing and the options were limited to what's available for the chef to make so we settled for what it is, but it never felt like settling. Service was also warm despite us bombarding into the server's wishful thinking in getting the restaurant cleaned and empty in time for clocking out. Please refer to the pictures taken as all of the above have imprinted quality sushi in our minds whenever we are back for some shopping next visit. A bit on the pricier side compared to other cheaper options in and out the mall but it's equivalent to paying $60 and on par with the a la carte restos here in Toronto.

Just enter the sliding door and, I promise you, you will experience authentic Japanese cuisine. Their menu has a variety of appetizers, ramens, sushi, sashimi, yakitori, and katsus. Of all the dishes I must order, it is their Uni Nigiri (Php95 per piece, 2USD). The Uni they serve is always very sweet and fresh. I usually order a few robata (grilled) items such as their Butabara Shio (Php85 per stick, 1.84USD) and Yakitori (Php75 per stick, 1.62USD) to go with their Onigiri Sanshu (3 Kinds of Rice Balls for Php345, 7.46USD). If you really want to go all out, I recommend you order their Chirashi Don (Php650, 14USD), the sashimi will depend on the delivery of the day. They also offer premium sakes to cap of your meal. This is an honest to goodness wonderful Japanese restaurant. If you're in Ortigas, forget those pseudo Japanese restaurants in the malls and head on over to Marufuku. :)

It's usually always better quality and tasty. Im not talking about japan good which is always a 10/10 but this was more like a 8/10 and the pricing made it 9/10 lol. There was not a negative thing I could say about the times I visited and ate lol my husband did I am sure get tired of it. He's more into Filipino food of course but usually if you grow up in the provinces food like this place isn't a daily or weekly thing so for him he got tired of it quickly lol I went to the one at MOA near the road entrance and the location at SM Baguio and both were fantastic! You do not have to talk to anyone lol which is more of my style. You click and choose what you want on the TV screen and it comes out to you. If it is a drink or larger item like a soup, they will hand deliver it but it's a quick drop and go kind of thing. There is a hot water spout at your table with matcha (which isn't the best grade) but it works lol Air con worked, it was never really "busy" when we went. Only a few tables but I'm sure it's because everyone was working at the times when we went.
