New Japanese restaurant at BGC! They just opened last September 14th :)
    Joey R.

I had a looong day today and I needed Japanese food to "reward" myself. Carlo, my fiancée, suggested we try a very new Japanese restaurant at the Fort. He heard about Genki from his mom (who found about this place because of a flyer). So, he called and asked for their exact location + what time was their last order. They said they were by the McDonald's stopover and that they would close by 10PM. It was 920PM when we called. We had enough time...or so we thought! *tun tun tun* We parked across the McDonald's stopover and headed to the 2nd floor. Lo and behold, no Genki. Maybe they are at the 3rd floor? Nope. *Time check: 936PM* Carlo calls again. The receptionist tells us they are across St. Luke's BGC, 2nd floor, near a McDonald's, Family Mart & CBTL...whuuut?! So, we decide to walk further until we see the Jollibee stopover. Boom! We saw the Family Mart and CBTL! *Time check: 948PM* Carlo and I literally start running to the building! We even ran up the escalator. We see Genki! As we reach the restaurant... We were greeted with the "closed" sign. *Time check: 1002PM* (;__;) My heart sank. I was ready to just go to CBTL and have my usual salad. But, Carlo didn't give up! He talked to the manager about the receptionist not giving the right directions and that we just really just made it in time. Surprisingly... They let us in! Yaaasss ~~~ Happiness! :D TIME TO EAT! Since this was our very first time here, the waitress explained to us that we had to order all our food using the menu tablet and that our orders would "arrive by train" 3 orders at a time (by train? This was unexpected). Also, she explained that the faucet to our right was our "unlimited" hot green tea. All you need to do was put 2 teaspoons of matcha in your cup and turn on the faucet. Nice! The menu was pretty simple to use. You have Sushi, Sashimi, Appetizers, Grilled food, Rice bowls, Beverages. Then, they are each divided into subsets. Our first order was Tuna Sashimi, Seared Salmon with Black pepper + Salmon Belly nigiri. We placed the order and, in 5 mins, the little train came out!!! IT WAS SO CUUUTE :) (Please check my photos for reference) The tuna sashimi was fresh and were thick cuts. No wasabi but I was happy to just squeeze a bit of lemon on each piece. The winner though was the Seared Salmon! Sooo good! Melt in your mouth delicious! I would have order that again but, I wanted to try other nigiris. So, I tried the Inari Sushi, Spicy Tuna Sushi and the Unagi Sushi (Sorry, no photos :( I just ate it all!). The unagi sushi was a very generous serving! Seasoned just right with the perfect size serving of rice. Perfection! *Time check: 1021PM* Overall, the whole food experience was WORTH it! I loved the fast and efficient service; I also appreciated that they accommodated us even though it was closing time :) I can imagine that this would be the perfect lunch spot for people working in the BGC area. It's not high-end Japanese food BUT the quality fits the price! Our total bill was only Php675. That's a very fair price for all the food we ate. I would definitely come back here! Next time, I plan to eat their Chirashi Don and I want to try their rice bowls! :)

    Sushi sushi!

Average-tasting sushi. Which becomes really good when you're super hungry or PMS-ing. Or just craving for sushi and need a fix right then and there. But I did really like their offerings with salmon (even if it wasn't the best kind of salmon you can find). And the corn maki was surprisingly good. Simple but good. Everything else was just hmmkay for me. I found it too rice-y (meaning I tasted the rice more than the actual fish). The order-from-a-screen thing and bullet train delivery to your table are really fun though. Trust the Japanese to always make life a tad bit interesting!!

Experience Japan in Manila with a digital approach of touch screen ordering. Your food will arrive in car train conveyor belt. HITS: Built-in hot water in every table (made for your soup) Sushi Dessert MISS: Unorganized queu on a weekend dinner WARNING: With the fun easy order system, you have a tendency to hoard!

L to R: tempura shrimp, fried salmon maki, and spicy salmon. SO GOOD.

I'm a very "all about the experience" type of foodie so this place made my night!! You order everything on a small touchscreen beside your table and then it is put on a car/conveyor belt and sent to your table! It was so so fun! Not to mention everything we had was delicious. We had tempura shrimp roll, fried maki salmon roll, spicy salmon roll and so much more that I don't remember and didn't take a picture of! But honestly everything was so good! Not to mention free unlimited DIY matcha. :)

You can't call it a California roll if you add mango.

Everything we had was good, until we had the "California Roll" that had mango in it. Don't get me wrong, I love mango, I'm from an island, but I don't want it in my California roll.

This time the visit was with my parents, my brother, my husband and me. We were served with delicious complimentary tofu with a great-tasting sauce. My brother ordered the aji tataki for us to start off and it's been a while since I've had this. Beautifully done and very tasty! My brother got the chirashi bowl. My husband and I shared the Gindara kaku bento - grilled cod fish, salad, salmon and tuna sashimi, tempura, miso soup with clams and mango ice cream. For dessert, fruits was the other option. My brother also ordered several chawanmushi for us to share. My parents shared the Nigiri kaku bento. There was so much food. The one down side was the fish in my parents' bento box was a bit tough, unlike the gindara that we had. I would probably recommend the Gindara kaku bento between the 2 bento boxes. We also had this soup that came in a small teapot. I had missed jotting down the name but you drink the soup from a miniature teacup. Glad we didn't order more food because there was already lots of food! Highly recommend!

This Japanese restaurant joins the big leagues such, as Seryna, Izakaya Kikufuji, Umu at Dusit, and…read moremany more. But your perception may vary, as my reviews are mostly from the southern region of Metro Manila. FOOD 5.0 Nama Uni Sashimi (420 PHP) Sea Urchin or sea hedgehogs are those spikey things that I always think about avoiding when going to the beach But, I love them on my plate, It is very sweet and delicate, and it tastes like the sea smells, with a soft, almost creamy texture. A 3-step process starts with a piece of Nori (seaweed wrap), then a slice of cucumber, a hefty plump of uni on top, close it off and surprise your mouth with a taste of the sea. Tofu Gratin (395 PHP) Shrimp flavoured white sauce that's smothered with cheese and lots of it. The gooey feels were just too strong and I couldn't but scrape the pan clean. Every spoonful is a renewed experience, so it doesn't get boring. Assorted Sushi (720 PHP) Their hot dishes overwhelmed our taste buds with clean flavours, which led us to unintentionally ignore this initially. Sushi pieces that are above average in size and offer a refreshing taste. Beef Sukiyaki Iron Hot Pot (530 PHP) Beef Sukiyaki that's filled with a rich broth flavoured by the tender smoked beef. This is a dish to remember and one of the items I will recall and recommend. Tonpei Yaki (430 PHP) A Japanese style Frittata topped with extremely thin slice pork that wiggles from displaced air around it. It looked alive upon my first glance. You'd be wrong to think that these paper thin slices of pork wont satisfy, because flavour is not in volumes, but in density. These melt in your mouth and just release flavour that you'd usually encounter in chunky portions of pork. I for one enjoyed less weight and more flavour. The frittata underneath is fairly standard. SERVICE 4.5 Waiters take pride in the food they serve, we were even prompted to taste the Tofu Gratin first as it's tastiest when hot. They're informative when guiding you through the menu and suggest based on your taste and not the most expensive like in other places. AMBIANCE 4.5 I love places that impress on ambiance and Mangetsu surely did. High ceilings and even a second floor for private functions, this place is well decorated and spacious. Air-conditioning is centralised, which means an evenly cooled environment.
