Customer service was good, restaurant was cozy, and food was out of this world. I came today and saw they were in a new location. Initially felt "cool" but immediately was greeted with a cold demeanor. Half of our table are Filipino born and raised, while my sister and I are born in the US. I asked for bottled water and they had one bottle left. My dad (born in the Philippines), watched the lady who initially sat us down who mocked me for asking for bottled water. I had my back to the restaurant the entire time, so I didn't see a lot of the interaction, but my dad saw and understood it all. We ordered the sisig - undercooked. The pancit hab hab - underwhelming. They had no soda, and we all (9) had to share 1 big bottle of water. Ok, fine, no troubles. Then, they ran out of plenty of entrees, so we were limited on what to order. My sister watched the staff spray the table while there were still items on it, while my dad watched and listened as the staff were gossiping about all the patrons (including us) in the restaurant. It was quite uncomfortable. Sorry not sorry, but this place is no longer it and the entire staff needs an entire overhaul of retraining if you want to salvage this place.

Heartbroken and hungry, we kept walking around the area until suddenly, we find ourselves at Soler Street and this yellow sign was staring back at us: GREEN. PLANET. VEGETARIAN. Thank you, universe! I've tried a few vegetarian places in Binondo, but this relatively newish addition to Chinatown takes the whole cake! Taiwanese-owned Green Planet Vegetarian serves a variety of tasty vegetarian and vegan food at super 'sulit' prices. Much like a super clean, glorified 'turo-turo', you can get a rice meal with 3 viands for only Php 100, and with complimentary hot tea, too! Try their veggie sisig (creamy and dairy-free!) and their crowd-pleaser, fried miteng (gluten), which has a beautiful, chewy texture and savory flavor--amazing when dipped in vinegar. Another favorite of mine is their radish cake, a slice for only Php 15! Being sold here as well are vegetarian and vegan food items such as Magic Meat (dehydrated TVP made locally), canned barbecue sauce, and this Taiwanese granulated mushroom seasoning (reminiscent of the local Magic Sarap seasoning--look for the package with that very strange smiling mushroom). I've also heard from their staff that they're planning to open a Makati branch!

How can you have Beef and Broccoli without beef? Is there even a type of Barbecue that's not made out of meat? Well, Bodhi uses tofu as a meat substitute. Their food tastes so good, you can't even tell that everything is made out of tofu. It's way healthier and cheaper. I usually have issues concerning my weight. I just can't imagine myself looking fat. Whenever I feel like I am gaining a few pounds, I just stop eating at fast food restaurants and I go to healthier options like Bodhi. Apparently at many dining establishments, advertised "vegetarian" items do end up containing fish or animal-based ingredients. So yeah, I was most definitely on high alert! Thankfully my non-plant based colleague I traveled with had previously dined at Pipino and was cool with us going there, so this ended up being my first meal in Manila. We ordered an appetizer (Unfortunately I cannot remember WHAT - perhaps buffalo fried cauliflower? Whatever it was, it was good because we ate it all!), a margarita, and Tofu Sisig with Garlic Rice. So . . . the margarita was neon green and comprised of . . . vodka? It was just lightly sweet, no tarty margarita flavors. Maybe it was Midori liquor mixed with vodka? I could have asked but I didn't want to potentially be insulting. Not going to lie, that threw me off and made me apprehensive about the rest of the meal. I mean, it wasn't undrinkable, but it just wasn't a margarita. Maybe there are other renditions of a magarita and I'm being an ignorant American - totally possible! Thankfully the Tofu Sisig ended up being quite delicious, I would say, even unique? My colleague remarked that it tasted interesting, but "not bad," hah. I quite enjoyed it. There were an ample amount of tofu chunks in a seemingly coconutty, but slightly tart thick sauce. I suppose it was calamansi (Filipino limes) mixed with coconut cream, soy sauce, and I'm not sure what else? I'm very unfamiliar with Filipino cuisine, so I can't really say! But I thought it was quite tasty, and honestly, it was even tastier the next day, cold, before my morning run, hah. The rice was rice, pretty decent and paired well with the tofu! Service was prompt and the prices were affordable! If I ever do receive the opportunity to return to the Manila, I would be quite keen on revisiting Pipino!

We had no idea where it was at all, but call it fate, as we turned onto Malingap, the street of our favorite shawarma joint (saving that for another review), we stumbled upon it right after - and on the day of their post-renovation re-opening! Good timing, universe. We started off the meal with dessert (because that's the best way to go, am I right?), vegan chocolate chip cookies all around. I could've eaten the entire dozen because the balance between the dark cacao and the sweet-but-not-too-sweet muscovado sugar was almost addictive. Their mushroom salpicao and cilantro soup were also good, and although I thought the dalandan balsamic vinaigrette of their Wicked Walnut salad was too sour and their stuffed portobello cheeseburger too mushy, it was redeemed by my favorite dish of the bunch - the veggie triangles! That curried chili sauce was the bomb: cold to the touch, but surprisingly hot and mildly spicy in my mouth. Take it from their menu: maybe being a vegetarian, or at least learning to appreciate this fine cuisine, really is the best thing you can do for yourself and for the planet.

I'd say get their quekiam (one of their specialties)--this erm..thing (I don't know, gluten or soy based mock meat?) is stuffed with savory veggies and mushrooms and comes with a spicy red sauce on the side. It's definitely not like the street kikiam which is made of god knows what! Super tasty appetizer... I was excited to try their veg sisig as it was one of their specialties, but I was a bit disappointed as the serving was quite small (at Php 170...) and while it was seasoned well and had a variety of mushrooms and minced tofu/soy/gluten (unsure...), I guess it lacked that creamy sauce that I loved when I used to eat the real pork sisig. It could use some veg mayo or some sauce to elevate it to a really satisfying sisig recreation. However, I should mention that it did come with crumbled chicharon (made of tofu skins) on top! The staff accommodates requests for adjusting vegetarian dishes into vegan meals. I did have a slight issue with their soup and shepherd's pie. Both were underseasoned and flat. I understand that some dishes don't include garlic and onion for Ayurvedic reasons, but they could use other spices to enhance their ingredients' natural flavors. Also, if you're sensitive to soy, you might want to skip the mock meat dishes because they're soy-based. The relaxed atmosphere encourages quiet, which is great for those who enjoy eating their meals in peace. The place is also surrounded by greenery, making it a charming spot to sit around. I've been a long-time customer of their Makati branch, but this place was just so delightful. For one, it was much nicer than their place in The Collective--brick walls, warm lighting, and with a playlist that includes Asobi Seksu, you just can't complain. Actually, I can't complain about anything during my stay. Sure, the whole place was packed with senior citizens lunching on a Sunday, but it just proves how Wabi-Sabi has captured the tastebuds of everyone, not just retired hipsters (Lol) such as myself. I loved my bowl of Viet Pho, a mushroom-based broth noodle soup that comes with crunchy faux pork bits. If you want something warm and light on a rainy day, this is perfect. Other recommendations: Their okonomigyoza is AMAZING. The Banh Mi is a must (you can have it vegan- just specify so they can use the vegan mayo). Vietnamese ca phe is always a good choice, but my all-time favorite is their lemongrass iced tea. Oh, and the service here is far more friendlier and faster than the Makati branch.
