Tasty, vegan versions of authentic Chinese dishes, though quite small portions for what you pay.
I stopped in for dinner with a friend on a Friday. They were able to squeeze us despite not having a reservation -- this place clearly does well. We ordered 4 dishes to share, plus some steamed rice, which was about the right amount. We got:
-Stir fried water spinach with chili & sichuan pepper (£8.80) -- a classic dish, with a nice gentle garlic sauce, amped up slightly by the addition of sichuan peppers. Real good. Very small portion though.
-Wontons in a house special sauce (£7.90) -- a classic vegan version of spicy wontons (with a nice tangy chili oil). At almost £8 for 6 pieces, not great value, but very tasty.
-Stir fried "lamm" with cumin & chili (£13.80) -- having never had the standard dish (cumin lamb), I don't know how this compares, but I loved this dish. Cumin is not a common spice in Chinese cooking, but this works great. Rather dry dish, but rich in flavour; cooked with onions, chilis and what seemed like Chinese celery, the textures in here are great. And it's served with two plain dumplings that they tell you to fill with some of the lamm. Very nice dish.
-Sizzling tofu in house special sauce (£13.80) -- we ordered this at their recommendation; while tasty, we weren't as impressed with this one. A bit too sweet -- smothered a sweet chili sauce -- but the hot plate helps give it a tinge of smokiness and it goes well with rice. We should've ordered the ma po tofu as was the original plan. Oh well, still solid dish.
Very friendly, helpful and quick service. Good spot, not the best value, but I guess nothing is in London. read more
