I was in desperate need of a good foot massage and picked this place because of the good YELP reviews. This place is a combo foot massage and mani-pedi operation. I only wanted a foot massage & opted for the 70 mins foot & back massage. They put me in the first "room", which is really a massage bed surrounded by three walls of long drapes. While I was waiting for the masseuse to bring the bucket of hot water to soak my feet, an outreached leg poked through the side curtain. It was the leg of the masseuse in the next draped "room" who was giving a back massage to her client. The massage rooms are very narrow. When my masseuse came with the bucket of water and I put my feet in it, I noticed that the plastic liner was torn on the bottom. My feet were actually touching the plastic bucket, not the liner. That told me that they use the same liners over & over again. Not very sanitary! As I'm trying to relax during the foot & back massages, I can hear all the conversations from patrons getting their manicures & pedicures. It was like being in a barber shop! On top of that, the manager kept the door open because it was a warm day, thus I could hear all the car traffic and pedestrians on busy Divisadero St. This did not put me in a relaxing mood. I've been coming here for years and haven't been disappointed until yesterday. I made a complaint in person after my massage but after going to read reviews, it looks like there has also been a complaint with the same person (Jacky) who was my masseuse. Therefore I feel I need to also speak up. I had my usual which was the 70 min half body half foot massage. The foot massage was probably the worst I've ever received. All he did was rub my feet very fast (no focus on pressure points or kneading). His nails were also scratching my feet. I decided to let it slide but when he started doing my body, I was extremely uncomfortable, violated and disappointed. He kept focusing around my butt when I consistently told him I did not want him to touch that area. He would apologize and move to a different area and then five minutes later move back to my rear. He also only worked on my left shoulder and then completely forgot my right side (proceeded to going back to my rear). I yelled and told him he missed my entire right side and stop touching me where I told him not to. At that point I was thankful the massage was over and realized I should've walked out earlier. Like I mentioned, I made the complaint in person but I do not believe this man (Jacky) should be working there. I'm disappointed that they've hired someone with no skill and no respect for the customer/women. I am so happy that Utoepia is open again!! I just had a terrific body/foot massage with Jin. As is stated, the clinic performs massages in the back courtyard (there are 3 reclining chairs there) and nail treatments in the front on the sidewalk (2 chairs). They no longer offer a foot soak before foot massages (as per city health rules) but the excellent quality of their acupressure massages and foot reflexology remains the same. Also, unlike other personal care businesses, they have not increased prices due to COVID. Ask for Jin, tip well, and enjoy! read more

If you want a massage, ask for Jin. He is amazing. Knowledgeable and friendly. I try and practice my Cantonese with him;). I know about 10 words and phrases. His English is growing but the other staff can give him instructions for you at the beginning of the massage. You will be fully clothed and can do half feet and half back or more back or more feet. They use water in a bucket and not those chair jet spas that breed bacteria. Tea and cookies are always offered and I love going here to treat myself to some stress relief and pain relief. Again, Jin doesn't speak a ton of English but he really is amazing at his job. I've had a lot of massage in my life and he is very helpful and professional. I've been waiting to review this place to see how long my nails have lasted, but I got a shellac pedicure and manicure 3 weeks ago from this place and my nails have lasted so well! None of my nails have chipped and they look just as good now as when I got them done. This is the longest my nails have ever lasted from getting shellac, so I would definitely come back here for another gel mani/pedi. Gigi is one of the best masseuses I've ever met. Whenever I'm in town for work I make a point to stop by and visit her. She knows where to find the hard to get to knots and how to take you to la-la-land while she's doing it. They start by soaking your feet and giving you hot tea and a cookie. And the place smelled pretty good, (many Chinese foot places smell like the shoe rental place at Bowling World). Downsides were a lot of slamming noises and frenetic activity while chilling out behind curtains for a relaxing massage. Bright lights also took away from the chillout hopes. It's a steal with the prices and the quality of massages. (You stay clothed for the basic massages.) The massage therapists were real pros and the price can't be beat. Just keep in mind, this isn't the Burke William experience, but definitely the best of this type of massage I've had yet. Wow,,,I mean WOW. The "massage" was not only AWFUL, I almost started laughing. It was the worst EVER, like comically bad. How can I be more specific? At first I thought it was too good to be true, the deals - the prices.. but it really is just a gem that has (thankfully) remained standing. I have been living in SF for almost two years, and Utoepia has become my go to place for both mani:pedis and reflexology. I have always had amazing experiences when I have gotten my nails done. The nail technicians, are excellent at details, and making sure that my nails are shaped properly. I usually get GEL, but when I come to utoepia I get regular nail polish because it always lasts for 7+ days. Their reflexology is also amazing! Whenever I feel stressed out, I take a quick uber to get an hour long reflexology appointment. There are only 2 downsides to utoepia: 1) their reflexology prices are a bit high in comparison to other places in the city. Their hour long foot massage is $30+ (in comparison to most other places are $25 for 60 minutes). 2) the salon can become very loud. Not so much an issue when I am Getting my nails done, but when you are trying to relax during a massage it can be a bit annoying :( read more

The therapist Wendy was very good. Adjusted pressure to my liking and asked about pressure throughout massage. Feel very relaxed after massage. The foot massages are great, but this review is about the gel manicure I got. It started pealing less than 1 day after getting it -- one fingernail polish all came off in one piece. I went back that day and they redid that finger for me, but that night, 2 more pealed off completely, each in 1 piece. It's now been 4 days since I got my manicure and 5 of my nails have no polish on them because they pealed off in 1 piece. I will never be returning here for gel manicures... For my fellow carriers of the XX chromosome, there are only two downsides to warmer weather 1) the social expectation to shave one's legs on a semi-regular basis, and 2) having something on your toes other than sock lint and last year's polish. Booooo. So, I've been thinking a lot lately...about ugly feet, heel callouses, toe hair, and yellowed nails. Are they deal-breakers? Can they be looked over? I'd like not to find out. Of course, my experience with the aforementioned atrocities is strictly secondhand *virtual wink* but I will admit these old clodhoppers weren't looking sandal-ready, so I Yelped my way to the nearest salon taking evening appointments and Utoepia seemed my perfect match. Called 'em up, asked for a 6pm pedi for two, and - after a few minor 'lost in translation' moments - we were good to go. The salon is indeed tranquil on the inside with sheer orange curtains separating the massage area from the nail area, a tea and cookie station (those Asian coconut crackers are my new obsession!), and zen-like music piped in for your listening pleasure. You hear a bit of the riffraff rumble from outside, but all in all they've done a great job creating a relaxed vibe. Best of all, the $22 pedicure was a success! My technician really took her time, was super gentle (but thorough!), and gave a nice little foot/ calf massage. They use the metal bowls instead of the old-school mechanical tubs, but the water was HOT (appreciated!) with floating lemon slices that they rub into your feet for supernatural sanitation. The paint job is looking fab, with my metallic magenta OPI hue, double-layered, top-coated, and ready to party. Everyone was super sweet and accommodating, even though my friend was 30 mins late for her appt. They accept credit cards, but cash tips are preferred. I'm taking Kat F's expert advice and booking a regular foot massage ($20 for 20 mins) in addition to my pedi next time. She says they're the BEST, and that girl doesn't mess around with accolades. Now that I have my frequent customer punch card (11 visits and your 12th is free) I may be finding more excuses to keep the callouses away. read more

Let me start by saying I very rarely write reviews. But I would be remiss if I didn't share my terrible experience w/ fellow San Franciscans. From the second I walked in the staff (including the manager) was rude. Even worse tho - the nail technician who did my pedicure, cut my feet in multiple places with her tools - drawing quite a bit of blood from one toe! It hurt badly - the clippers were very sharp. The tech who did my mani was outright angry - gripping my hands tighter than necessary. I selected a color but when it came time to paint he used another one. He pinched me when I told him he was using the wrong color. Rather than gently removing my hands from the dryer, or nicely cleaning up my cuticles, he poked me hard to get my attention, then shoved my hands into the uv light. He was rough when doing whatever it was he needed to clean up. This was one of the worst experiences I have had at a nail salon. If I could give 0 stars I would. But, I do know I will never give my business to these people again. They don't deserve it. And to pay $72.00 to be mistreated is just unacceptable. read more

CASH!" which is a sure sign they are not properly logging in their sales. For these rates (i.e. 43$ for 1/2 hour foot and 1/2 hour body massages), this place is downright swanky, and I was also very pleased with the level of service from the masseuse, Tracy. I arrived on time for my 5pm mani-pedi appointment and was kept waiting in the lobby area for 20 minutes, then another 5 minutes waiting in a pedicure chair. My manicurist had just started another patron's manicure, so either they double booked or they gave my reserved spot to a walk-in client. Only ended up having time for a pedicure because of this. I don't mind waiting if I walk in, but running 25 minutes late for an appointment i scheduled days in advance is not cool. The end result? Lucky for me I run and walk everywhere so much butt could use a nice massage. But, like Kelli H., I was surprised that this was what the back massage was all about. My masseuse might have spent a maximum of 5 minutes on my actual back. But it wasn't the deep massage that I wanted it. It was more like he was petting my back. I was verbal about how I wanted my feet massaged because he started off petting them. I told him I wanted more pressure. It helped, but it still wasn't satisfactory, so I asked him if he could add more pressure. No real change, it was a very inconsistent massage. BUT based solely on my pedicure last week ($22) -- I have to rate them rather low (2 stars based on the actual pedicure, and plus one for the nice environment.) I have no idea why they continue to call it "foot massage"). Anyway -- back to my pedi experience... I came in with my sister and they got started on her right away, but I waited a good 20 minutes with my feet in a tub of hot water (which quickly turned cold) until someone came to do my pedi. Not sure if they recently had a hiring spurt, but the ladies on the floor were very inexperienced and the senior ones were constantly giving tips in Cantonese (which I speak, so i know!). Felt like I was getting a pedi at a beauty school (which I've done, and will never do again). My girl was very nice - but quality matters too! Pedicure took a REALLY long time -- and not the good parts. She barely massaged my calves and only pretended to do light buffing. Painting too far longer than it should. They didn't offer me sandals to walk to the drying machine so I had to go barefoot across the floor that no doubt has clippings and other yuckiness (*cringe*) -- big no no given my pet peeves. They also messed up one of my toes and had to do it over. Anyway -- pretty poor job with the pedicure frankly. If you are going there for massage/ reflexology, ask for the private room if it's available, nice for couples or a girl friends bday, as it were. We got kneaded like dough by both Tony and May. Wow. May was mine temporarily & that woman's strength is no joke! She is so sweet too! Comfortable chairs that convert to a massage table. Sheer drapes in the salon, aesthetically appealing but can get loud depending on the time of day & level of business. $ 35 for 70 minutes gets you 40 minutes focused on your feet and 20 minutes on the rest of your body... oh Happy feet! Each of my toes fet like they got jerked off then my entire her feet were stroked the same fashion. Yep it was almost weird but still awesome. Sorry to be blunt. Sort of. For only 5 bucks more, you can do the reverse (not jerk off your therapist, pervs) - 40 minutes on your body, 20 on your feet. My friend did this and she was very pleased. Tony must have been doing something right because everytime I looked over, she was smiling with her eyes closed. And she was moaning a bit. You are fully clothed by the way if you've never been to a place like this. So wear something comfortable. Don't be alarmed by the pushy nature of the lady at the front desk. And tip your therapist good - don't worry you will have a chance to because the envelope for "cash preferred" will be pushed up in your face before you leave. Will return. read more
