Went here for a couple's massage. It was actually THE worst massage of my life. I have no idea what kind of massage it is, it's not shiatsu or Thai. Felt like the 2 old guys were just winging it with their elbows the entire time. Both of us actually felt very on edge after the massage and not relaxed at all. We go to many massage places around the city but decided to give this place a try because someone I met randomly had recommended it. The masseuse pushed at very random spots, like your bones, and kept doing this weird thing with the bottom of my foot that did not feel good at all. I got a lackluster massage - don't think the worker really knows acupressure points or has an innate or studied understanding of muscles and what people want. He was nice enough, and I asked for more pressure multiple times. I felt sorry for him and tipped well (as he did try his best) - but overall I would not go back based upon this experience. I'd been there a few years back (Utoepia) - and had a nicer shorter experience with another worker. I was in desperate need of a good foot massage and picked this place because of the good YELP reviews. This place is a combo foot massage and mani-pedi operation. I only wanted a foot massage & opted for the 70 mins foot & back massage. They put me in the first "room", which is really a massage bed surrounded by three walls of long drapes. While I was waiting for the masseuse to bring the bucket of hot water to soak my feet, an outreached leg poked through the side curtain. It was the leg of the masseuse in the next draped "room" who was giving a back massage to her client. The massage rooms are very narrow. When my masseuse came with the bucket of water and I put my feet in it, I noticed that the plastic liner was torn on the bottom. My feet were actually touching the plastic bucket, not the liner. That told me that they use the same liners over & over again. Not very sanitary! As I'm trying to relax during the foot & back massages, I can hear all the conversations from patrons getting their manicures & pedicures. It was like being in a barber shop! On top of that, the manager kept the door open because it was a warm day, thus I could hear all the car traffic and pedestrians on busy Divisadero St. This did not put me in a relaxing mood. A friend took me here the first time and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I came back to relax by myself and enjoyed a pedicure too. The "rooms" are curtained off, and it is a clean place. It's a steal with the prices and the quality of massages. (You stay clothed for the basic massages.) The massage therapists were real pros and the price can't be beat. Just keep in mind, this isn't the Burke William experience, but definitely the best of this type of massage I've had yet. I've been coming here for years and haven't been disappointed until yesterday. I made a complaint in person after my massage but after going to read reviews, it looks like there has also been a complaint with the same person (Jacky) who was my masseuse. Therefore I feel I need to also speak up. I had my usual which was the 70 min half body half foot massage. The foot massage was probably the worst I've ever received. All he did was rub my feet very fast (no focus on pressure points or kneading). His nails were also scratching my feet. I decided to let it slide but when he started doing my body, I was extremely uncomfortable, violated and disappointed. He kept focusing around my butt when I consistently told him I did not want him to touch that area. He would apologize and move to a different area and then five minutes later move back to my rear. He also only worked on my left shoulder and then completely forgot my right side (proceeded to going back to my rear). I yelled and told him he missed my entire right side and stop touching me where I told him not to. At that point I was thankful the massage was over and realized I should've walked out earlier. Like I mentioned, I made the complaint in person but I do not believe this man (Jacky) should be working there. I'm disappointed that they've hired someone with no skill and no respect for the customer/women. I felt very violated and it's unfortunate to see other people having issues with him as well. read more

I am so happy that Utoepia is open again!! I just had a terrific body/foot massage with Jin. As is stated, the clinic performs massages in the back courtyard (there are 3 reclining chairs there) and nail treatments in the front on the sidewalk (2 chairs). They no longer offer a foot soak before foot massages (as per city health rules) but the excellent quality of their acupressure massages and foot reflexology remains the same. Also, unlike other personal care businesses, they have not increased prices due to COVID. Ask for Jin, tip well, and enjoy! read more

If you want a massage, ask for Jin. He is amazing. Knowledgeable and friendly. I try and practice my Cantonese with him;). I know about 10 words and phrases. His English is growing but the other staff can give him instructions for you at the beginning of the massage. You will be fully clothed and can do half feet and half back or more back or more feet. They use water in a bucket and not those chair jet spas that breed bacteria. Tea and cookies are always offered and I love going here to treat myself to some stress relief and pain relief. Again, Jin doesn't speak a ton of English but he really is amazing at his job. I've had a lot of massage in my life and he is very helpful and professional. It is also a fun place for a small baby or bridal shower. Everyone can get massaged sitting next to each other and relax. I've been waiting to review this place to see how long my nails have lasted, but I got a shellac pedicure and manicure 3 weeks ago from this place and my nails have lasted so well! None of my nails have chipped and they look just as good now as when I got them done. This is the longest my nails have ever lasted from getting shellac, so I would definitely come back here for another gel mani/pedi. They also had a lot of colors to choose from, and the quality of the mani/pedi was good for the price. read more

Gigi is one of the best masseuses I've ever met. Whenever I'm in town for work I make a point to stop by and visit her. She knows where to find the hard to get to knots and how to take you to la-la-land while she's doing it. They start by soaking your feet and giving you hot tea and a cookie. The chairs are comfy and the place is clean. It's a deal. Depending on the massage you select, you can walk out of there for less than $50 after tip. read more

Cute place, clean, a little above-average massage quality, customer service pretty good. White Rabbit candy, tea and cookies offered- a notch above. And the place smelled pretty good, (many Chinese foot places smell like the shoe rental place at Bowling World). Downsides were a lot of slamming noises and frenetic activity while chilling out behind curtains for a relaxing massage. Bright lights also took away from the chillout hopes. Staff gets too chatty in Mandarin at times. But the therapists were adequate and nice, the equipment was okay, paid $32 plus a Hamilton for 20 foot and 20 back. In a pinch I'd return. read more

For my fellow carriers of the XX chromosome, there are only two downsides to warmer weather 1) the social expectation to shave one's legs on a semi-regular basis, and 2) having something on your toes other than sock lint and last year's polish. Booooo. So, I've been thinking a lot lately...about ugly feet, heel callouses, toe hair, and yellowed nails. Are they deal-breakers? Can they be looked over? I'd like not to find out. Of course, my experience with the aforementioned atrocities is strictly secondhand *virtual wink* but I will admit these old clodhoppers weren't looking sandal-ready, so I Yelped my way to the nearest salon taking evening appointments and Utoepia seemed my perfect match. Called 'em up, asked for a 6pm pedi for two, and - after a few minor 'lost in translation' moments - we were good to go. The salon is indeed tranquil on the inside with sheer orange curtains separating the massage area from the nail area, a tea and cookie station (those Asian coconut crackers are my new obsession!), and zen-like music piped in for your listening pleasure. You hear a bit of the riffraff rumble from outside, but all in all they've done a great job creating a relaxed vibe. Best of all, the $22 pedicure was a success! My technician really took her time, was super gentle (but thorough!), and gave a nice little foot/ calf massage. They use the metal bowls instead of the old-school mechanical tubs, but the water was HOT (appreciated!) with floating lemon slices that they rub into your feet for supernatural sanitation. The paint job is looking fab, with my metallic magenta OPI hue, double-layered, top-coated, and ready to party. Everyone was super sweet and accommodating, even though my friend was 30 mins late for her appt. They accept credit cards, but cash tips are preferred. I'm taking Kat F's expert advice and booking a regular foot massage ($20 for 20 mins) in addition to my pedi next time. She says they're the BEST, and that girl doesn't mess around with accolades. Now that I have my frequent customer punch card (11 visits and your 12th is free) I may be finding more excuses to keep the callouses away. read more

Let me start by saying I very rarely write reviews. But I would be remiss if I didn't share my terrible experience w/ fellow San Franciscans. From the second I walked in the staff (including the manager) was rude. Even worse tho - the nail technician who did my pedicure, cut my feet in multiple places with her tools - drawing quite a bit of blood from one toe! It hurt badly - the clippers were very sharp. The tech who did my mani was outright angry - gripping my hands tighter than necessary. I selected a color but when it came time to paint he used another one. He pinched me when I told him he was using the wrong color. Rather than gently removing my hands from the dryer, or nicely cleaning up my cuticles, he poked me hard to get my attention, then shoved my hands into the uv light. He was rough when doing whatever it was he needed to clean up. This was one of the worst experiences I have had at a nail salon. If I could give 0 stars I would. But, I do know I will never give my business to these people again. They don't deserve it. And to pay $72.00 to be mistreated is just unacceptable. read more

I asked the receptionist about a specific nail technique, and before she could even answer my question, she was interrupted by a nail tech saying something very mean and harsh in a language I didn't understand. After a few minutes of this back and forth conversation, the end result to my question I had was "NO" I was very offended because whatever the nail tech was saying to the receptionist let me know that they didn't want my business. I arrived on time for my 5pm mani-pedi appointment and was kept waiting in the lobby area for 20 minutes, then another 5 minutes waiting in a pedicure chair. My manicurist had just started another patron's manicure, so either they double booked or they gave my reserved spot to a walk-in client. Only ended up having time for a pedicure because of this. I don't mind waiting if I walk in, but running 25 minutes late for an appointment i scheduled days in advance is not cool. The end result? Sloppy polish up on my cuticles, and skin on my heels that's as rough as it was when I went in. Nice people and a beautiful space, but for a $22 pedicure, you can do a LOT better. read more

$36 for 40 minutes of foot massage and 20 minutes of back (ie. Butt) massage. Well let me say that the price is reflective of the quality you get. Kelli H. is right on. Lucky for me I run and walk everywhere so much butt could use a nice massage. But, like Kelli H., I was surprised that this was what the back massage was all about. My masseuse might have spent a maximum of 5 minutes on my actual back. But it wasn't the deep massage that I wanted it. It was more like he was petting my back. I was verbal about how I wanted my feet massaged because he started off petting them. I told him I wanted more pressure. It helped, but it still wasn't satisfactory, so I asked him if he could add more pressure. No real change, it was a very inconsistent massage. The weird part was that he would put his fingers in my ears. No joke. I was like what? But I couldn't stop giggling since I am prone to giggling and can't take anything too seriously. I'm sure other people would respond in a much more negative way. My friend and I shared a private room which was nice, but I only got to witness her masseuse who was much more vigorous and made me envy the pressure she got :( Anyways, I won't be coming back. I can't speak for the other massuse's, they could be amazing, but my massuse massaged my shins. Not my calves and not my feet. My primary care doctor recommended Toe-asis as an "inexpensive but know-what-they-are-doing reflexology massage place" when it was still Utoepia. At first I thought it was too good to be true, the deals - the prices.. but it really is just a gem that has (thankfully) remained standing. But when I have had one of those weeks (or days) and get the urge to 'treat myself' to a massage, Toe-asis comes to mind & so does gratitude. Watching people bustle in and out and make appointments left and right, it looks like they have a pretty solid following for their foot massages. BUT based solely on my pedicure last week ($22) -- I have to rate them rather low (2 stars based on the actual pedicure, and plus one for the nice environment.) Decor of the place if fantastic -- ceiling high sheer drapes section off the massage rooms, and at $35 for 70min of foot massage, I'm sure it's worth it so may give this place a 2nd chance -- just for massage though. Btw, "foot massage way is treats way more than just your feet for any newbies out there -- it's pretty much full body except you sit in a chair and stay fully clothed. I have no idea why they continue to call it "foot massage"). Anyway -- back to my pedi experience... I came in with my sister and they got started on her right away, but I waited a good 20 minutes with my feet in a tub of hot water (which quickly turned cold) until someone came to do my pedi. Not sure if they recently had a hiring spurt, but the ladies on the floor were very inexperienced and the senior ones were constantly giving tips in Cantonese (which I speak, so i know!). Felt like I was getting a pedi at a beauty school (which I've done, and will never do again). My girl was very nice - but quality matters too! Pedicure took a REALLY long time -- and not the good parts. She barely massaged my calves and only pretended to do light buffing. Painting too far longer than it should. They didn't offer me sandals to walk to the drying machine so I had to go barefoot across the floor that no doubt has clippings and other yuckiness (*cringe*) -- big no no given my pet peeves. They also messed up one of my toes and had to do it over. Anyway -- pretty poor job with the pedicure frankly. I went in and asked can I get a mani, pedi, and foot reflexology session. The lady goes " Whattttt. Huh" I said " Mani, Pedi, Reflexology" "huhhhhhh" I said "What don't you understand? She like "yes yes we do mani pedi" ok, and I want the reflexology, I literally had to point to their OWN menu and say THIS THIS THIS, I WANT THIS. She like no no we cant do. If you are going there for massage/ reflexology, ask for the private room if it's available, nice for couples or a girl friends bday, as it were. We got kneaded like dough by both Tony and May. Wow. May was mine temporarily & that woman's strength is no joke! She is so sweet too! Comfortable chairs that convert to a massage table. Sheer drapes in the salon, aesthetically appealing but can get loud depending on the time of day & level of business. $ 35 for 70 minutes gets you 40 minutes focused on your feet and 20 minutes on the rest of your body... oh Happy feet! Each of my toes fet like they got jerked off then my entire her feet were stroked the same fashion. Yep it was almost weird but still awesome. Sorry to be blunt. Sort of. For only 5 bucks more, you can do the reverse (not jerk off your therapist, pervs) - 40 minutes on your body, 20 on your feet. My friend did this and she was very pleased. Tony must have been doing something right because everytime I looked over, she was smiling with her eyes closed. And she was moaning a bit. You are fully clothed by the way if you've never been to a place like this. So wear something comfortable. Don't be alarmed by the pushy nature of the lady at the front desk. My hopes were high based on reviews & how busy it was. From when I walked til I was done for my pedicure was only 30 min. The 2 min "massage" of my legs was no more then them rubbing lotion on me. A friend and I decided to pamper ourselves on Saturday by getting a mani/pedi. Thanks to Yelp, we found Utoepia. We called around 2pm and luckily they had time to fit us both in. From the moment I walked in, to the moment I left, I felt so relaxed. The environment was calm and quiet, unlike other places I've been to where the workers are gossiping about their customers. The chairs are comfy and even the walls have a soothing feel to them. The ladies that work there take their time to make sure your mani/pedi is perfect. They ask you what you want rather than do what they think looks good. And even though I was content with two coats of my color, my manicurist insisted she put on a third coat. When I was done, Utoepia had 4 stars in my book but what happened after I left gave them their 5th star. Being the ditz that I am, I smudged one of my fingers and had to go back to get it fixed. I called them to fill them in on the situation and they welcomed me back. The fixed my nail for me right away and even checked the other fingers to make sure I didn't screw any other ones up. When I tried to tip them at the end, one of the ladies chased me out the door and stuffed my money back into my pocket. They really meant it when they said it wasn't a problem... I don't pamper myself too often with mani/pedis but I know I will for sure be coming back here to get my nails done. Definitely looking into a GNO here since it closes at 10pm! read more

I've walked by here a handful of times since the place opened and made a mental note to try it some time...but of course I forgot, since there's like 10 million other places in SF that I have a mental note to try. Today was different, I had spent all day humping it all over town on long MUNI rides, fighting my way through the crowds of the 2012 Giants World Championship Parade, and then the Presentation at City Hall and Civic Center, so my poor feet were tired and saying hook us up already! After feeding my stomach with some hella nom a*s cheesesteak and curly fries from The Cheesesteak Shop (btw, this place is bomb.com) next door, I walked by and thought, ok, perfect, why not. The place has a calming effect when you walk in. Oh yeah they do nails, manis, pedis and all that stuff for you women out there... So back to why I came in...no reservation (but call and make one, if you can) and they were able to fit me in. Granted it was like 3:30pm on a Wednesday, but still. They sat me down in a comfy chair, pulled some curtains around, for semi-privacy, and brought me hot tea and chinese cookies to much on. Soothing music, candles, and I was totally chill. Got an awesome traditional Chinese foot and body massages, including the hot water in a tub soak. They'll adjust to whatever you like - terminator style, or a soothing soft touch. Just speak up and tell them whatever is to your liking. For me, Mike worked some magic. 70 minutes for only $35 (Oct 2012). Seriously, Score. They also have a free membership (like a frequent massage program), so if you plan on coming back, sign up, it takes a minute. Just your name and phoen number. They take credit cards, but bring cash so that you can leave a good tip. Oh, and, put your phones on silent, and talk softly like the signs say. I am very particular with my massages, especially foot massage. I have seen this place for at least a year and finally decided to give it a try. With my work, I stand and walk a LOT. I also carry a 10 lb backpack everyday. I walked into this place, received a friendly greeting. I know I already wanted a one hour foot massage. I figure like most places, the actually massage is probably 50min and 10min of it is soaking your feet. But this place is awesome. 10min of soaking, 40min of foot massage, and 20min of shoulder massage. Oh boy, I was in heaven. And all that for $35?! As for the amenity, the environment is very peaceful. The colors are very calming. I especially like the sheer curtains per massage chair so you can have a little privacy but yet still know what's going on outside. Cons: it is on divisadero so it's a bit nosy. Also, while I was there, there were two gentlemen across from me and they had forgotten that this is a place to relax and not a conference room. But this isn't utoepia's fault. Also ladies, for the shoulder massage part, you will be facing down so either bring your compact for touch up or don't walk in in full make up. Love this place, it's cheaper than what I'm used to. The foot massage was underwhelming, the upper body rub was not good at all and I would not recommend going for it. I am a massage therapist, so I can tell if a therapist is good or not. Unfortunately, there were some strokes that were clearly on a dangerous side. (( I suggest going here for just a foot massage to relax a bit, get your feet gently rubbed and that`s it. I highly recommend the reflexology foot massage at Utoepia. It was my first time, so I asked for medium pressure, and it was just right. Yen does a great job. It wasn't exactly what I expected from a foot massage, but it felt great and relieved a lot of stress in my feet. I ordered the 30-minute foot massage and 30-minute back massage, and the back massage was also great. Like the foot massage, the back massage is a pressure-point massage, which is different than a spa massage. Utoepia is very clean and I like the privacy curtains and music.
