My hopes were high based on reviews & how busy it was. From when I walked til I was done for my pedicure was only 30 min. The 2 min "massage" of my legs was no more then them rubbing lotion on me. A friend and I decided to pamper ourselves on Saturday by getting a mani/pedi. Thanks to Yelp, we found Utoepia. We called around 2pm and luckily they had time to fit us both in. From the moment I walked in, to the moment I left, I felt so relaxed. The environment was calm and quiet, unlike other places I've been to where the workers are gossiping about their customers. The chairs are comfy and even the walls have a soothing feel to them. The ladies that work there take their time to make sure your mani/pedi is perfect. They ask you what you want rather than do what they think looks good. And even though I was content with two coats of my color, my manicurist insisted she put on a third coat. When I was done, Utoepia had 4 stars in my book but what happened after I left gave them their 5th star. Being the ditz that I am, I smudged one of my fingers and had to go back to get it fixed. I called them to fill them in on the situation and they welcomed me back. The fixed my nail for me right away and even checked the other fingers to make sure I didn't screw any other ones up. When I tried to tip them at the end, one of the ladies chased me out the door and stuffed my money back into my pocket. They really meant it when they said it wasn't a problem... I don't pamper myself too often with mani/pedis but I know I will for sure be coming back here to get my nails done. Definitely looking into a GNO here since it closes at 10pm! read more

I've walked by here a handful of times since the place opened and made a mental note to try it some time...but of course I forgot, since there's like 10 million other places in SF that I have a mental note to try. Today was different, I had spent all day humping it all over town on long MUNI rides, fighting my way through the crowds of the 2012 Giants World Championship Parade, and then the Presentation at City Hall and Civic Center, so my poor feet were tired and saying hook us up already! After feeding my stomach with some hella nom a*s cheesesteak and curly fries from The Cheesesteak Shop (btw, this place is bomb.com) next door, I walked by and thought, ok, perfect, why not. The place has a calming effect when you walk in. Oh yeah they do nails, manis, pedis and all that stuff for you women out there... So back to why I came in...no reservation (but call and make one, if you can) and they were able to fit me in. Granted it was like 3:30pm on a Wednesday, but still. They sat me down in a comfy chair, pulled some curtains around, for semi-privacy, and brought me hot tea and chinese cookies to much on. Soothing music, candles, and I was totally chill. Got an awesome traditional Chinese foot and body massages, including the hot water in a tub soak. They'll adjust to whatever you like - terminator style, or a soothing soft touch. Just speak up and tell them whatever is to your liking. For me, Mike worked some magic. 70 minutes for only $35 (Oct 2012). Seriously, Score. They also have a free membership (like a frequent massage program), so if you plan on coming back, sign up, it takes a minute. Just your name and phoen number. They take credit cards, but bring cash so that you can leave a good tip. Oh, and, put your phones on silent, and talk softly like the signs say. I am very particular with my massages, especially foot massage. I have seen this place for at least a year and finally decided to give it a try. With my work, I stand and walk a LOT. I also carry a 10 lb backpack everyday. I walked into this place, received a friendly greeting. I know I already wanted a one hour foot massage. I figure like most places, the actually massage is probably 50min and 10min of it is soaking your feet. But this place is awesome. 10min of soaking, 40min of foot massage, and 20min of shoulder massage. Oh boy, I was in heaven. And all that for $35?! As for the amenity, the environment is very peaceful. The colors are very calming. I especially like the sheer curtains per massage chair so you can have a little privacy but yet still know what's going on outside. Cons: it is on divisadero so it's a bit nosy. Also, while I was there, there were two gentlemen across from me and they had forgotten that this is a place to relax and not a conference room. But this isn't utoepia's fault. Also ladies, for the shoulder massage part, you will be facing down so either bring your compact for touch up or don't walk in in full make up. Love this place, it's cheaper than what I'm used to. The foot massage was underwhelming, the upper body rub was not good at all and I would not recommend going for it. I am a massage therapist, so I can tell if a therapist is good or not. I highly recommend the reflexology foot massage at Utoepia. It was my first time, so I asked for medium pressure, and it was just right. Yen does a great job. It wasn't exactly what I expected from a foot massage, but it felt great and relieved a lot of stress in my feet. I ordered the 30-minute foot massage and 30-minute back massage, and the back massage was also great. Like the foot massage, the back massage is a pressure-point massage, which is different than a spa massage. Utoepia is very clean and I like the privacy curtains and music. Well, it was last minute, down the street, two of us wanting to go at the same time, etc. Anyway, I like Thai massages, so I generally don't mind pain - I want my body to feel relaxed afterwards, not necessarily during. The woman who did my massage was really hurting me, but again, thai massages generally aren't comfortable during, so I while I asked her to lighten the pressure, I didn't worry too much about it. I've been here a bunch of times now and most of the time I love it! I've had some great massages here, and they've done such a great job with the decoration. They have soft flowy curtains that they pull around your massage chair so you get a little privacy - if you go with a friend, they just pull back the separating curtain. When the massage is good, it is good! The pressure is strong yet it's super relaxing. At $35 for 70 minutes, you really can't go wrong. I'd have given 5 stars, but a couple of the times I've been there, the massages haven't been that great. I need to find out the masseuse's name the next time I have a good one! Other minor drawback is that parking can be tough. Their website says there is ample free parking in the area, but good luck finding it! If you go, don't forget to start a frequent purchase account! They basically assign you a number and keep track of the services you've gotten. Then every so often you get a free one (every 10? 12? The gentleman who massaged my feet did an excellent reflexology session. When he saw I was interested in the science of it, he explained which part of the body was affected by each part he was massaging. Honestly, I almost hate to write about it because I don't want it to get so busy I can't get an appointment. I just had the worst massage of my life by Jesse. I came in for a 70minute foot massage (40min foot 20 min upper body) Midway through the foot massage I realized the pressure was getting very light, turns out Jesse started falling asleep. After a few nudges he woke back up and continued....and quickly started falling in and out of sleep again. This went on for a few minutes until I decided to just open my eyes and go on my phone and continue nudging him hoping he'd realize that I was wide awake and so he should be too. After the terrible foot massage, Jesse started setting up for the UPPER BACK massage as he flung around all the pillows and blankets. A majority of the UPPER BACK massage was focused on my butt cheeks. The other part of the upper back massage was ROUGH as he focused on digging his fingers into my shoulder blades and digging his elbow into my spine. I never expected to have my bones dug into so hard and my butt definitely did not need ANY massaging. I literally couldn't wait for this massage to be over. I sadly paid for this massage that was not worth anything. I had informed the nice young man at the front desk of my concerns but unfortunately the manager was not available to hear about this. I do plan to reach out to the manager and I also hope this review warns customers of what they could experience during their visit and if they receive a massage by Jesse. read more

The best cost/value indulgence in SF? The Asian foot massage! I mean what a brilliant invention. I cannot wait for the trend to cross the continent and migrate to Europe where I live. After hearing about this relatively new west coast phenomenon I did a little Yelp search and found (quite literally) Utoepia. From my first step inside I knew this place rocked. The hardwood floors and the floor to ceiling curtain dividers give the place an exotic east meets west feel. And those reclining chairs that double as massage tables are amazing. I booked a massage with a friend and we were able to site side by side in a separate nook. The massage started out with a foot bath and creamy mask that was rubbed to moisturize, then our masseurs got to work kneaded, pressing and rubbing our feet and legs. I personally found the experience a little painful since the woman working my feet was super strong. I didn't ask her to lighten up since I wanted an "authentic" experience but a gentler touch would have been more pleasant. Same goes with the back rub. It was intense to say the least. Overall, I was really psyched about the experience but felt that it could have been a bit more gentle to this foot massage novice. But an hour of pampering for $35 is hard to be beat. read more

i love this place! This was my second time going to this place but my first time getting a 70 minute foot massage. The massage was great; 10 minute foot soak, 40 min foot massage, and 20 minute body massage all for 35 bucks. I like that the place is clean, the ambiance is nice, and there are private rooms for couples. The lady I had used just the right amount of pressure and made sure I was ok with it as she asked me several times if I was comfortable. Foot massage devotee, I lived in China where I first discovered this medicine and I know the real deal. That said, this place is excellent and 80% the real deal, but not quite. But to their benefit, I've never found a truly legit place in the US, except maybe in San Gabriel Valley. The vibe in here is calming, especially as evening begins and the manicure/pedicure portion of the business shuts down. There isn't much privacy so if there is a group of random yapping people, the thin curtains won't insulate a bit from their constant jabber. The chairs are awesome though, totally legit, straight outta China. Try out the reclining remote. The foot bath is mediocre at best. The water isn't nearly hot enough and they don't add any herbs. Total bummer because the herbs have ancient formulas for healing. All the providers here wear gloves which I guess is cool from a health perspective, but, like other things, it feels better unprotected. The foot massage itself is good, sometimes great, sometimes lacking. I doubt the staff was trained properly in China, but they do a pretty darn good workaround and seem to hit most of the spots. Sometimes I need to direct them and they appreciate my input. If you find someone you love, tip well and get them next time. Most of all, everyone here is friendly and profession, and best of all, this spot is a block from my house. I always leave feeling like I'm walking on clouds and looking forward to my next visit. read more

My aunt was having surgery at UCSF MountZion next door so I decided to drop in for a quick pedicure to kill time. The staff was very friendly and welcomed me in right away to be seated for service. I told them I was actually about to eat my breakfast I'd just picked up from Starbucks and didn't mind coming back afterwards but they told me it was perfectly OK to eat while getting a service. AWESOME! I was seated and a very nice lady prepared the water and gave me some colors to choose from. This is the reason I am giving such a low rating. I wanted a pink to match the pink I have on my new gel set from a different salon I frequent every two weeks. I selected several pinks starting from an identical to several that could pass for identical and they were all out of those colors. I couldn't understand how they could be out of so many pinks. It was crazy! She explained all the colors missing a number in front of it were not available. You can see in the picture attached that several numbers are missing. I was a little annoyed by that and also the fact that I was now trying to make a decision whether to just leave or not but quickly proceeded to soak me and begin the process. The pedicure was fine but not anything outstanding and I went with a pink that is several shades too dark because that was my only option other than just getting a boring french that was not my intention. The service was quick and the staff again was very nice but $45 for a pedicure was way too expensive for the service I received. True I had gel removed and put back on which I am very familiar with being more expensive than a regular pedicure but to not have many colors to choose from definitely should be a reason for that service price to be reduced in general. In short, I was happy to get a pedicure but I should've gone to another place with more color options. read more

I've come here multiple times, and usually had a pretty good experience. Friday night though was not great. I had a foot/back massage from Tracy. Foot massage - great. Back massage - torture. She used her elbows through the entirety of it, digging into my back so hard that I had to say "ow" at least three times. And I generally like a lot of pressure, but this was not at all pleasurable. She jostled my left arm around so hard that it actually hurt afterwards. I couldn't wait for it to be over, whereas usually a massage goes by way too fast! Walked in for a mani/foot massage on a Friday afternoon. They accommodated me right away. Opted for the $35 for 70mins (10min herbal soak, 40 mins foot rub, 20 mins upper body clothed massage). Service was impeccable. I dunno if it was the mandarin connection, but they were so good to me I was started to feel bad. They gave me a pair of sketchy looking shorts to put on since the foot massage involved upper knee area and I was wearing skinny jeans. The foot massage was painful yet relaxing. When they hit the pressure points, it's pretty intense. Otherwise, I was so relaxed I fell asleep during my mani/foot massage treat!!! Mani was ok. Didn't do a great job, but it's $12!! Cuticle management and polish application needs improvement, but again, it's only 12 bucks, what can I say?? They have buy 10 get 1 free foot massage and 12 get 1 free mani membership specials. I had made an appointment, so we were seated right away in one of their partitioned rooms. We were given tea and some crackers/cookies and I knew to dress comfortably because I wanted to make sure that I was massaged well. I was a bit skeptical because, how good could it possible get when you have your clothes on. But, it was!! The lady who was working on me really knew what she was doing. I could have literally fallen asleep! The mani part of my appointment was just fine. They had a good amount of colors and while the woman was very fast, she still good job. The ambiance was relaxing and I felt our money was well spent!! As a side note, my body was super sore the next day. I tried Utoepia for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and it actually felt pampering. The service was great and my technician was fast. I love the women and men who work here; they're kind and do good work. They'll slip you into a massage slot, often even if you're here last minute. Tip = if you want a chilled out massage go after the nail business closes at 7:30; it gets super quiet. This is the best thing I have found in san francisco in recent memory! They do a great job on mani/pedis, especially the Gel nails. but the specialty is the foot massage! It is heavenly! I run a lot and after a particularly gnarly Marin headlands trail run, I went and had my feet renewed by the lovely ladies at Utoepia. I asked them to massage around my knees and quads instead of upper body which they did and it led to me being able to run another 8 fast miles later that day which would not have happened had I not gone in for that massage!!! Great place to grab a pedicure or manicure in Lower Pacific Heights. Fast service, and even quicker walk-in massage offerings. I only go in for pedicures, and they're 23 dollars to soak in a hot bowl with a lotus flower, foot massage, buffing, polish removal, nail clipping, cuticle clean up, and a new coat of polish. I LOVE that they have the Vinylux polish line; it lasts so much longer than the others. They also carry Essie and OPI and have one of the largest and most organized ranges of colors of any nail salon I've been to. read more

Wow, what a massage! I took my mom here for a belated mother's day/b-day celebration and booked the private room in advance. We each got the 75-minute reflexology foot massage and had two awesome masseuses. My masseuse had the most powerful hands - at times it hurt so much that I wanted to cry out but then in the next second, it would turn into gentle kneading and massaging. Soothing music plays in the background and they bring you tea or water with a little wrapped coconut cookie. Not only did I get a great foot massage, but I had the best head massage of my life. The staff was so friendly and the space so peaceful and clean. I was convinced to try the 70 minute/$40 massage and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Definitely better than what I had expected! My friend from NYC was visiting and I had heard of this place, so we went to give it a try. It was a cold, rainy day, and perfect for girl time/massages. We did the 70 foot massage for $35. They put us in a private area and drew the curtains so we were basically alone. They gave us shorts to wear, since we both were wearing skinny jeans. Along with the tea and cookies, the owner (?) filled my meter when it ran out because I stupidly parked in a one hour spot. The foot massage was lovely, I had a man, don't remember his name. When I flipped to my stomach for the back portion, I was a little disappointed because my hair was up and he didn't ask me to take it down, but I found out from my friend that she got a killer head massage. WOWWEE. I just found my own little slice of mani/pedi heaven! I dropped into Utoepia this morning for an impromptu lotion mani/pedi, and slipped into bliss. Two ladies were pampering me at the same time. They were very friendly, kept talking to a minimum, and took care with every step of the manicure and pedicure (i.e. my nail polish didn't chip off two hours later). Even the music playing in the background was wonderful. The best part about all of this is that you get to enjoy a very relaxing ambiance for a reasonable price.
