Dr. Perkins is down-to-earth, direct and quite fast with his treatment. I would recommend him to everyone!

Gone to him for years, efficient, good communicator, down-to-earth. I've had three skin cancers, basal and squamous, and many, many pre-cancers and other suspicious lesions. He handled them well. So far, so good. Has a good sense of humor. The nurse had a great sense of humor, too. Smiles and laughter (at my jokes) help me a lot during these visits. read more

There are a few reviews on here suggesting Dr. Perkins comes across as a jerk, but I disagree and believe he is all business. If you want a doctor that will sit around with you and ask you about your feelings, Dr. Perkins is not for you. If you want a doctor that will address your medical needs in a thorough, professional, and educated manner, then your search is over. I started visiting Dr. Perkins when a friend noticed an odd mole on my skin. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Perkins to have him check everything out. After a quick search, he told me it was an "anomalous mole" and that it should be removed. For the mole removal, Dr. Perkins numbed the area and cut a good sized chunk of flesh out of the middle of my back. During the process, he was very conversational and we had a good chat. He stitched everything up and it was over in about ten minutes. I have now been back to Dr. Perkins for two annual checkups and have been pleased both times. He answers all my questions, though very quickly, and performs the checkup thoroughly. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Perkins. I interpret his attitude as professional, but busy. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Perkins for 5 or 6 years now for random skin issues that pop up--several of which have been a real cause for concern or embarrassment. Getting a dermatology appointment is no small feat anywhere--but he and his office have always managed to fit me within a day or two when the issue has been scary or urgent. Equally as important, I TRUST Dr. Perkins. He is crazy smart and really knows his @#it. He's figured out things that were misdiagnosed multiple times by other doctors, and he works to get to the root of the problem. I do not disagree with other reviewers who say his bedside manner is...abrupt. And I too have found it a little off putting a time or two (though I'm pretty used to it by now and even appreciate what I have begun to view as his "efficiency"). Either way--when you're dealing with high-stakes dermatology issues-- such as diagnosing antibiotic resistant infections or potentially malignant growths--it really puts admittedly frustrating but superficial concerns (eg rude staff, rushed appointments, long waits) into perspective. I trust this guy--and that's what matters most for the big stuff. read more

I'm giving the doctor's office a 2-star review because the people in the office are extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. I was a patient there for over a year before I moved across the country. I ran out of my prescription from his office before I was able to get an appointment with a new doctor. They refused to refill my prescription without a visit, which is understandable because they wanted to monitor my blood. However, I explained over and over that it's impossible for me to visit because I don't live there anymore. The woman I spoke with was extremely unhelpful and unwilling to understand that I only needed 1-2 weeks worth on a refill until I'm able to get to a doctor here. I guess it's not their problem. However, it is actually their problem because I was a patient of theirs and this was my last experience with their office. Happy to be living somewhere else now where I can try a new doctor. Dr. Perkins himself...I did find him arrogant, as others have mentioned, but he was knowledgeable and dealt with issues and then sent me on my way. As a dr., I'd probably give him 3.5 stars. Dr. Perkins was probably the shortest visit to the dermatologist I have ever experienced. With that being said, I do feel like he listened to my issues, addressed, them and sent me on my way. However, his staff is unfriendly, they are not helpful, and they do not follow up as promised. I have been to my fair share of dermatologists and I am very happy with the level of service that I have been receiving with Dr. Perkins. He is very prompt and on time with his schedule and very thorough with my skin exam as opposed to some other dermatologists that I have seen that even after recounting my history they refuse to look over my skin. At my last appointment I waited about 20 minutes in the waiting room, and as soon as Dr. Perkins came in he apologized profusely for the wait. I recommend him to all my friends. read more

I am a dermatologist-holic... that means that I love going to dermatologists in my long-lasting quest to make my skin awesome. I'm far from it... but I digress. I went to Dr. P because I have been in DC for 2 years without a dermo. I used to have one in NYC. I was impressed by the speed in which I was seen once I got there. I was able to print the forms from the web to make the new patient process less painstaking. I had several different issues I wanted Dr. Perkins to advise me on... and that he did. He listened and explained everything to me. For the things that I was just being neurotic about - he said, sorry nothing can be done and told me a cosmetic procedure was the only way to go. I appreciated his bedside manner, candor, and help... and will be definitely going back there as my new regular dermatologist in DC. read more

I've seen Dr. Perkins several times over the years. He's done full body cancer scans and mole removals for me. While they can sometimes have a bit of a wait, once you get back to the exam room, I feel like Dr. Perkins is thorough, competent and efficient once you get back to see him. Dr Perkins is great...and he's such a babe. Really. He's professional. He definitely won't cuddle you, but he knows his stuff. I never felt like he was rushing me. I've had problem skin for years and Dr. Perkins is the only Dr. to really take my concerns seriously. More importantly, he cured me! I've been seeing him for over a year now and have been more than happy with the results. He can be a bit sarcastic, but I have a similar sense of humor so I actually find him quite funny. I can see how it might come off as condescending or curt, but if you can look past that, he really is a wonderful, knowledgeable doctor. As for the reception staff- typical Dr.'s office, sometimes they are pleasant and at other times....I could do without the attitude. All in all, I highly recommend Dr. Perkins! read more

I would recommend Dr. Perkins in a second. I recently saw him for a basic skin examination, and he was thorough and explained well what he was doing and what he was looking for. I had a few other questions for him, and he was patient and open to engaging in discussion about any other concerns I brought up. I found him to be really friendly and knowledgeable, and better yet - he didn't try to sell me anything at all, which can sometimes happen at dermatologists (note that the office does carry SkinCeuticals, which is a very good prescription line). Everyone else I dealt with in the office was nothing but pleasant, friendly, and helpful as well. After living in DC for two years and going through three other dermatologists, I just wanted to say that I feel Dr. Perkins was the first one to fully listen to all my concerns and to treat me l more like a human being rather than a cash cow patient. In discussing my treatment options, he went into detailed explanations and answered all my questions, and I feel we arrived at a mutual decision on which course to pursue. To address some of the negative reviews, in my own experience I found Dr. Perkins to be confident and direct, and personally I find these rather reassuring qualities for a doctor to possess, but I never felt that he was condescending. His prescriptions were affordable and thus far effective, but of course that will be case-specific. I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes in his office. read more

I saw Dr. Perkins for the first time this morning. He is an attractive younger man, and I appreciated his bedside manner. He allowed me to rattle off my laundry list of concerns and complaints to make sure we covered everything I had in mind. I would definitely return to his practice and refer others who asked. The doctor was direct and courteous, and didn't try to sell me on expensive (and unnecessary) cosmetic procedures and wrinkle fillers, etc. He provided me with the name of a plastic surgeon in DC because he felt he could not adequately address my issue. While I greatly enjoyed Dr. Perkins and his beside manner, his front desk staff annoyed me on the way in. I had faxed in my new patient forms to expedite the check-in process, but they could not be found. Thankfully (re)completing them was pretty quick, but an annoyance nonetheless. read more

Usually it takes months to get an appointment with a top tier dermatologist. This office was able to get me scheduled in less than two weeks as a new patient. Dr. Perkins is timely, careful, and seemed to care about any questions I had concerning anti-aging, skincare, etc. I am glad to have found what seems to be the best DC has to offer. I have been a long, long, longtime (10+ years) Yelp lurker, but have finally been spurred to create an account solely to rate Dr. Perkins' practice - I feel that strongly about it. Perkins and his staff have accomplished what many restaurant, hotels, other doctors' offices, and assorted businesses have failed to do: he made me into a true Yelper. May the old gods and the new protect me. I'm going to do this review in two parts, one for Dr. Perkins himself, and the other for his support staff. You likely already see where this is going, especially if you gleaned context from other wayward reviewers who made their way down to I Street, but I have come too far to stop the review train now. So, without further adieu: REVIEW FOR DR. PERKINS (THE MAN, THE LEGEND) Dr. Perkins is a capable and knowledgeable dermatologist who seems to care about his patients and their afflictions. Is he a little brusque, straightforward, and rapidly paced? Absolutely. The first time this born and bred Southerner tried to mosey on in and have a casual chat with Dr. Perkins, he was taken aback by how little patience Dr. Perkins had for any such circuitous chatter. He's a man who likes to get to the point, figure out the problem, prescribe a solution, and go after it. Fin. At first, like many here it would seem, I was a bit crestfallen by what I thought was a rather gruffly rude bedside manner. But in time, I came to see method to Dr. Perkins' madness: he's a busy man, in a busy city, with a busy and frustrating office (more on that later). I have even come to enjoy my "conversations" with Dr. Perkins, as he is absolutely no-BS. Sit down, state the problem, he'll fix it. Case closed. I dig it. Of course, putting up with what many south of the Mason-Dixon would consider a fundamental lack of manners is made palpably easier due to one simple fact: Dr. Perkins gets results. He knows his stuff. He knows what medications to prescribe, what you should be doing for your skin, and how to make his patients achieve their goals. He may come off as a bit rough around the edges, but when it comes to a competent dermatologist in the heart of DC, he's on the short list. If you're going there for (the world's most stubborn) acne treatment like I am, he'll meet and exceed expectations. Overall, if I were reviewing Dr. Perkins and his medical know-how alone, I'd probably give him 4.5/5 stars. He's a bit of a tyrant, but he's your tyrant, and the man knows how to make your skin look great. I really like the guy now that I'm well-versed in his ways. His staff, on the other hand... REVIEW FOR DR. PERKINS' SUPPORT STAFF (LES HORREURS INNOMMABLES) 0/5 stars. Easy. Among the worst "medical professionals" I've ever dealt with. Actually, no, scratch that - they are the worst. Full stop. Why, why Dr. Perkins? Why do you ruin your patients' experience to what, by all other appearances, should be a nice visit to a competent dermatologist? Why do you employ these horrible, absolutely rude, and completely inept people to man your office? Why do you match your own competence with a completely equal and opposite incompetence? Am I witnessing what will one day come to be known as Perkins' Law? What is this demonry? I could go on here for some time, so I'll limit myself to three tragic tales of the terrible team running the offices of the otherwise fine dermatology practice of Perkins, Stolar, and Singh. Tale #1: The Case of the Pharmacy Number After my first visit to Dr. Perkins, at which time I noticed a general lack of quality amongst his staff, I was relieved to receive a phone call from one of the ne'er-do-wells in question asking me which pharmacy to telephone my prescription to. "Oh, why, please send it to this one," said I, completely oblivious that I had just sealed my own fate. "What number that is?" was the clipped response. Not having the number offhand, I asked if this fine woman could hold a moment while I looked it up online. It surely wouldn't take more than a few seconds. "I AIN'T GOT ALL DAY YA KNOW?" she roared through the receiver. "YOU CALL ME BACK!" Click. Line dead. I sat there, stunned. What had just happened? In a city of consummate professionalism, such a stunning lack of grace caught me completely off-guard. I called her back, hesitantly supplied the number, and thanked her for her time. The only response was the line clicking dead once more. Tale #2: The Odyssey of the Faulty Prescription Soon after the first tale - which had left me understandably shaken - took place, another, even more horrible chain of events conspired to force me into interaction with Dr. Perkins' orphanage-proprietors-from-a-1920s-Hollywood-movie-tier staff once more. [regrettably, I have hit Yelp's review character limit, and will have to continue this tale in a separate review] TL;DR: Dr. Perkins? Good! His staff? Terrible. read more

I love Dr. Perkins. He's the only doctor I see for dermatological issues, I've been going to see him for years. He has a great bedside manner, he's very nice and puts me at ease completely. He's able to spot problem areas immediately and tell me usually on sight whether it's something I should be concerned about or not. Was stuck on the train due to some issue with a deer getting hit on the tracks ahead. Called to tell them that I wasn't sure when I'd get there... because I was stuck on a train. Took several minutes to get ahold of someone then the person who did answer was super crabby. Ended up stuck on the train or stranded on a platform for over 50 minutes, couldn't make it, got charged for missing the appointment. Definitely frustrated that I was only trying to get medical help but instead I got charged $50 because the metro is run by morons. read more

Let me start by saying, I highly recommend Dr. Perkins. There is not another doctor I will go to after seeing him. He's the best. I agree with many posters that he is not the most cuddly doctor, but like another poster said, I have always linked that to his confidence. The few times I encountered any push back from him was when I was actually the one being difficult and not fully explaining an issue or following his instructions exactly. He's the only doctor I encountered who was able to clear up skin issues I had (issues other doctors said I'd be stuck with), and I've been to over 10 different dermatologists for this in my lifetime. He takes diligent notes on my case and remembers everything I've ever seen him for. He also thoroughly reviewed my medical past before our first meeting, informing me of an incorrect diagnosis a doctor made TEN years ago. read more

Dr. Perkins saw me on time as scheduled. He addressed all concerns and explained everything. I would highly recommend him.

The service is terrible and the doctor rushes patients through appointments. After waiting several weeks for my appointment, I was rushed by Dr. Perkins during my appointment - which could not have lasted more than 6 or 7 minutes total. During the middle of the appointment, Dr. Perkins cut me off and said "this is your last question, we don't have time to address all of your questions." To add insult to injury, the short visit cost HUNDREDS of dollars after insurance and I felt that Dr. Perkins resolved nothing. In fact, I am still suffering from symptoms of the issue which Dr. Perkins never properly addressed. Dr. Perkins is running a for-profit operation and he benefits by turning over the highest number of patients in the shortest amount of time to generate profit. He also prescribed me ridiculously overpriced brand name medicines in lieu of less expensive generics for no apparent reason. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience? This seemed odd and did not make sense to me. Also, the front desk staff are rude and hostile. They don't answer the phones on Monday mornings and take excessive lunch breaks while forwarding all calls to voicemail for hours at a time. I do not recommend this practice. read more

I was very shocked to see some negative reviews of Dr. Perkin's practice- very shocked! Dr. Perkins is really great! My husband and I both see him. Just this week we had our annual screenings and I can't say enough good things about this Dr.- he really takes his time with you, explains everything, and asked me at least three times if I had any additional concerns. It is clear that Dr. Perkin's is an incredibly smart and well informed- He is honestly one of the kindess Dr.s I go to. The front desk staff are just the right amount of friendly- they'll greet you and help you out but are not over the top. read more
