Tochi is an interesting place and one that I expect the majority of our residents have no idea it exists - even though they've been here for many years. First of all, just the building's looks on the outside and inside are very interesting. It likes somewhat like a house and has a front porch. Inside has a warm feel, almost like a cabin. It has a hippy vibe. I don't buy a bunch of stuff here, as I mostly come for popcorn kernels, rice, beans, vitamin-type stuff (Tumeric, Elderberry, CBD, etc.), acid-free coffee and then impulse buys like a craft soda or a bison beef stick. If the vitamins and beans/rice/etc are up your alley, they have a large selection. Also items that may fit certain food restrictions or preferences. A nice selection of international foods too. Most of the products are dry goods but they also have several refrigerators and freezers. I've heard good things about their farm fresh eggs, but I have never bought any. And there are other items I'm not mentioning that I've not paid attention to. I don't believe they have fresh produce, so don't necessarily look at this place like a grocery store. read more

I have been going to and using Tochi products for over 35 years. I have NEVER been dissatisfied with anything I have purchased from this store. For healthy eating products and special more rare ingredients, this store is your best place to fill your order. The people are ALWAYS friendly and helpful. For the longest time, this was -the- organic and foreign grocery store in Fargo. While there are new foreign places, this is still a great place to get a variety of spices and more, and the staff is courteous and friendly, helpful to almost a fault. Probably the healthiest grocery store in Fargo, still. There's an air of mystery in here, all the spices and more filling the air. From the stone-filled parking lot to the stairs leading up to another level made of real wood and the wood stumps that you can sit on outside, this place always seemed almost... magical? Elven? Walking through the doors of Tochi's is like walking through a portal into another dimension. The store was established in the 70's and it still looks like something straight out of the 70's. They have an interesting variety of health and natural foods. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Whatever you want to know about a product, they can tell you. For some items--like teas and herbs--their prices are unbeatable. Don't come here thinking you're going to find everything you need for natural foods and health care. They don't have it all. But they do have what no one else will carry--the hard-to-find, out-of-the-ordinary but essential items to a healthy life-style. My favorite part? Their wall of bulk herbs. Every herb you could ever ask for available in bulk and the prices for these herbs is amazingly low. My second favorite? Their selection of grains and beans. I have a very difficult time calling Tochi a grocery store, and I'm tempted to give them one star for it, but this place obviously fills a niche for some folks so I feel like that would be uncalled for. There was literally NO fresh produce or meat when I was there, and as a paleo/primal eater that's just beyond unacceptable. I was hoping for an honest-to-goodness grocery store like a Sunflower, Sprout's or even Trader Joe's. TJs may have two full aisles of grains and only a small closet of meat, but at least it's SOMETHING! I got the distinct impression that all Tochi really caters to is grain and soy eaters. Although I don't come here often, I always leave with a full bag of goodies. You can purchase a variety of dried fruits and raw nuts which hasn't always been easy to come by. I trust this little family owned operation and always feel happy finding new ingredients. read more

Love, LOVE this store! First, as others have said, the atmosphere is amazing. It's like going back in time to the 70's. There's not a computer around. They still do all their ordering, inventory and bookkeeping the old-fashioned way--with pen and ledger. The building is an old train depot, with old wood floors and ancient walls, with Virginia Creeper vining up the walls and bushes surrounding the building, it really is like walking into another world. Other's have already mentioned the service and I'll say it again: knowledgable and helpful staff. The owners are second generation owners, raised in the store so they know everything there is to know about health foods and the other employee has been there for decades. Then there's the selection: everything, and I mean *everything* you could want in grains, legumes, spices, herbs, nuts and ethnic foods. There *is* a limited supply of vegetables, fruit and other perishables, but those you can get in any health-food section of the grocery store, so they emphasize the things you can't get anywhere else in town. You want oat meal? They've got oatmeal--steel cut, rolled, instant, organic, non-organic or chemical-free. You want barely? Pearled barley, hulled barley, organic, non-organic, take your pick. The wall behind the cash register is a wall filled with jars of herbs--medicinal and culinary. Every kind of herb you can imagine. They measure the herbs out for you by the ounce and the prices are ridiculously cheap! And that brings me to prices: Tochi's is so inexpensive. Their Jasmine rice is cheaper than regular white rice in the grocery store. Why would anyone ever buy the pasty white rice at the store when you can have Jasmine rice from Tochi's for less? If you buy anything in bulk, you get a 5% discount. The oatmeal is already cheap, but if you buy 50#, it's an even better deal. Go ahead. Check Amazon's prices. Check Whole Food's prices. Tochi's will almost always beat them. And even if the prices aren't the lowest, you still have the good quality food, atmosphere and service that you won't find anywhere else. read more

Tochi's is a fantastic, unique mom-and-pop style health/bulk/international store in downtown Fargo. It isn't a "grocery" store, and you could probably never do all of your necessary shopping here, but I don't think that Tochi's is trying to convince you of this either. As best I can tell, Tochi offers solid health-conscious alternative food items, a limited selection of bulk foods, and organic food options that you simply can't find anywhere else in Fargo. The prices are a little higher, as would be expected for organic, specialized food options, but I have managed to find some items that are the best deals in town (e.g. $6.99 for a lb of quality pistachos is a steal in FM). Don't be fooled by its smaller size, after perusing through the store a few times now, I've discovered that they have at least a few items of nearly every odd-and-end that I could think of, including items that aren't even stocked at the international stores. They have the most diverse collection of spices in a single place in FM. You just have to ask. It may be a small store, but you should definitely shop a little more deliberately when you peruse Tochi because it would be very easy to miss excellent deals on special items or even miss the items outright. Enjoy the woodburning stove on all of those cold days. When you're feeling stumped, ask for help outright because it's not one of those places where the customer knows best. In contrast to other health-centric stores in FM, Tochi's offers more raw goods and that can be little intimidating for those who think healthier living/eating is shoving pills down your throat or buying expensive processed packaging with an organic label on it. Homebrewers: Tochi also sells wine and beer brewing equipment. As with groceries, I wouldn't purchase all of my brewing supplies there, but I definitely have picked up brew items when I was missing something important (thermometer, bottle caps). Honestly, the prices were very affordable considering that the brew equipment could easily be more expensive. If you live in FM and don't occasionally pick up some treats at Tochi, then I have the sincerest disappointment for you. You are really missing out. read more

I used to go to this place on occasion during my undergrad days and I thought it was pretty cool. After coming back from two years in Madison Wisconsin, and now living in Valley City, I came here during a weekend I spent in Fargo, and wow, this place truly is evocative of what you might find in Madison (or any larger city with a large number of health-conscious people). Tochi's has just about everything; great tea, plenty of healthy (and good tasting) snacks, a section with plenty of Asian foods, even some beer and wine making supplies. It's a store that I actually look forward to going to. read more

Fantastic service, amazing atmosphere and all the hardcore health products you can only find online if you live in the Fargo area. They have a fine selection of homeopathic and essential oils as well as locally grown organic grains and oats. If you are a lover of cooking your own indian cuisine, this is definitely the store to shop at. read more

Adequate selection of organic and healthy foods. My wife and I have to watch a lot of our cholesterol and fats and we find many good things here. Neat store and an array of multicultural foods and seasonings. Best place to go if you're cooking something healthy or foreign. read more

Tochi's!!! Haha... the staff is Great! The food... is WAY weird. Always love wandering through it and checking it out. Weird, but usually something good to be done with it. Ugh. It's what you get for a health nut of a boyfriend. But the organic, natural, health, asian, specialty food... place... store... thing is such a beautiful building with a considerate staff and Wicked Awesome prices. Seriously? Bulk spices, nuts, dried berries and fruit are really cheap, but really good. And they even have locally grown produce during season. The location is a little odd, so you probably won't happen upon the store by chance, but I guess that keeps it free of the usual downtown Fargo "just browsing" riffraff. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It's a great store if you're looking for food items that are sometimes tough to find around here. (Who knew pine nuts for homemade pesto would be so hard to track down?? I finally tried Tochi and got a huge bag for about the same price as those tiny jars the grocery stores usually sell.) Plus, I think it's fun to stock up on those microwavable packages of Indian food--they may look like cat barf when you're pouring them out of the bag, but those are some of the best quick lunches I've ever had for a couples bucks. read more
