It's been over two years since my last update and felt like it was time! Some of the teachers who I loved for group fitness classes have moved on and I'd love to share some of my new (and old) faves! Jenna's 5:30 pm BP class on Monday is nothing short of amazing! Her music pics are always upbeat, and she delivers a killer workout and has good queuing and motivational messages! Get there early, this class packs out! Be sure to get a pass from the front desk after you check in, and pick up a blue towel in the gym so you can wipe down your equipment during class. La Monique aka "Blue" has a cardio dance class on Tuesday at 5 pm that is so much fun you won't even realize how hard you're working! She does a lot of her own choreography, which is really innovative and fluid. Her class is well designed, sometimes we use fitness bands for a song or two and maybe even break out one of the risers for some step work. Chris is still holding it down for the 5:30 PM BP class on Wednesday. His cues are always spot on, and he takes time to meet the new folks in class at the beginning and shows them the basics. This is a good class to start with if you've never done weightlifting before and need some foundational cues. Chris also teaches a new class called Thrive at 4:30 pm on Wednesdays, it's a lower impact workout designed for folks who are 50+. I've taken it a few times myself and still gotten a good workout! It especially emphasizes strength training in the legs and balance. Abby is teaching the 5:30 PM Mixxed Fit hip-hop class on Thursdays now (in addition to the 11:30 AM on Saturdays), and she always brings the party! Her playlists are often ratchet, bring extra H2O and throw in a sprinkle of sea salt for those electrolytes and maybe a squeeze of lemon for some sweetness! I have the biggest calorie burn ever when taking Abby's classes! Friday Mariah slays the 4:30 PM BP class, and it is everything you need before the weekend! Good music, strong cueing, motivational messages to not quit! Jessica also teaches Thrive at noon on Fridays, which is a solid bet if you want a less intense workout. Jessica has an incredible voice, you might find yourself humming along to her good song pics! Sunday at 9:30 am Eric DJs a good mix of old school and current beats for UJAM. He's an attentive instructor and gives multiple options for folks of varying dance capabilities. He wears a headset for class and breaks down the movement over the microphone. It's a really good class to start with if you haven't taken a cardio class in a minute, or ever! While I had to take a break from personal training due to work commitments, Emily is still the baddest of the baddies and I recommend her wholeheartedly if you are considering personal training to build strength or after recovering from an injury or had extended time off from exercising. She's incredibly knowledgeable and can build you a personalized program. Toby Wells just celebrated its 20th anniversary and it's easy to see why it's thriving - great teachers and terrific classmates! I've met many new friends at the Y in the past few years, and I'm very grateful for this space, which is why I'm here almost every day! Thanks, Toby Wells!

The great thing about joining the YMCA is you're not limited to just the facility where you sign up. This appealed to me as it does get kinda boring going to the same pool day in and day out. Anyways I've been a member for a little under two months. The pool is indoors however a half dozen tiles have been removed from the ceiling letting in the sun and a few cute birds. This means sunscreen is needed for me. The hot spa is outdoors with some shade provided by a small triangle canvas. I highly recommend getting the facility schedule and reading it before you plan your workout. They do have many activities for the kids including gymnastics and day camp. The women's locker room consists of; one dressing room, roughly ten semi private showers, numerous toilet stalls, lockers with built in combination locks, benches and blow dryers. They have three (that I know of) separate locking family restrooms. I really appreciate these on gymnastic days when the locker room is filled with little kids and privacy is hard to find. The indoor pool has 5 or 6 lap lanes depending on swim lessons, day camp and family swim time. It is fairly shallow, the deepest part is approximately 5 1/2 feet. A lifeguard is on duty at all times. A full indoor workout area is available. Group fitness classes include; water exercise classes, yoga and pilates. Soccer leagues are offered for kids on up thru adults. So far I really like this location. The staff are always friendly, everything is super clean and parking is plentiful with shady spots.

Originally why I stopped coming was due to how crowded and unorganized it was which was such a deterrent! After the recent remodel with up to 18-20 Squat Racks, additional benches/dumbbells, and more Leg Machines, I started coming here over my favored UTC, but now that UTC downgraded from 11 Racks to 6 and removed the outdoor area in favor of potential Pickleball Courts I will not be going back unless they can bring back what they had before or even better as it's not a great place to go anymore for a Powerbuilding workout. For a Push Pull Leg workout between 3-5 days a week Balboa really hits better now and my only gripes are if they had more of the nice water bottle refill stations and cleaned the bathroom more since people come in from the pool and leave the ground wet, but the plumbing and cleanliness here is still better than at UTC which seemed to not make any changes on that front. If the dumbbells were organized as well that would be great but I can see how hard it is to manage. Overall this is my new home for now and definitely would recommend as it's not as seemingly as crowded before with more equipment availability. 3 stars but I would put 4 if the place itself was more organized and bathroom was always clean and dry!

The problem is this location has a serious overcrowding problem, so it can be difficult to use the equipment you want without waiting a lot. If you can find a time to go when it's not crowded then it's five stars. My two cents: 24 hour fitness nearly went out of business due to the pandemic and closed several locations in San Diego. Well, everyone has been back to the gym with a vengeance for a few years now and they need to open new locations.

So I decided to work with a personal trainer for a month, for a total of 8 one-hour sessions. Toya, spent a lot of time during our initial meeting gathering background information on my medical history and asking insightful questions that helped her formulate a plan. She focused on my limitations, balance concerns, posture, and strength. Instead of immediately turning to machines, she had me work on exercises aimed at improving activities of daily living such as getting up from a chair, carrying groceries, maintaining good balance, and what to do if I start to feel unsteady. Throughout our sessions, Toya closely monitored me, corrected my form, and inquired about how I was feeling that day, adjusting my workout accordingly. She stressed the importance of modifying an activity if it caused pain. Upon learning that I had trouble remembering exercises, she printed out and emailed me a list of activities with instructions on reps, weights, rests, etc. She explained the purpose of each exercise and guided me on how to progress as I gained strength. Toya also underscored the significance of stretching my muscles, especially at the end of each session, and demonstrated the proper techniques. I thoroughly enjoyed our sessions as Toya is personable and positive. As time passed, she highlighted my progress and has made a significant impact on my life. I now feel stronger, steadier, and confident that I can continue to work out independently.

By the time I was done exercising, they spent a total of $2,000 at Nordstrom. I spent weeks dealing with the bank to get my money back. The LA Fitness staff didn't seem to care. They just said that they don't have cameras in the locker rooms, so there's not much to be done about it. There is something the staff could do to prevent theft: greet members when they come in the door! When I come in and scan my barcode, the person at the desk is usually scrolling on their phone, and they don't even look up to acknowledge me. If the staff greeted every person who came in the door, then it would give people the idea that the staff are attentive, and they would be less likely to burglarize lockers. Since this incident, I stopped leaving valuables in my locker and got a different combo lock. Nevertheless, someone got into my locked locker again (I could tell because my bag was rearranged, as if someone had gone through it). On the plus side, this is a huge gym with a ton of equipment. I can usually get onto whatever equipment I need without much of a wait. There's also plenty of parking, and it's a convenient location.

Some of my favorite highlights include: * A supportive, welcoming culture with both the team and other members * Curated workout plans tailored to your individual goals * In-depth data analysis and consultations to ensure you're on track * Flexible scheduling * Honest, real feedback--no fluff, just what you need to hear What I appreciated most was how Sean consistently walked me through my data, clearly explaining what was working and what needed adjustment, always backed by evidence. She even commented that she could tell his previous teacher had done an excellent job with circle time and early learning activities. I also appreciate how Ms. Kelly thoughtfully transformed the school this year to a more authentic Montessori environment -- updating the furniture, toys, and curriculum. The school organizes fun and engaging activities throughout the year, which my son always enjoyed. Another thing I truly value is the school's excellent communication. The teachers regularly share photos of the children's daily activities -- as a working parent, it always makes my day to see what my little one is doing while I'm on break. They are also very prompt and transparent when reporting any accidents, clearly explaining what happened, what steps were taken, and how my son was doing afterward. I also love that students wear uniforms, which gives a real sense of belonging and community.
