Went to school here in 06-09 (7th and 8th). Hated the math teacher who took over my other teacher while on maternity leave! She was mean, insensitive, had ego issues and the worst! Even my brother didn't like her when he was forced to have her because she was impatient with him even though he's autistic and always behaved in her class. She was impatient and hostile with me if I was ever wrong on a math problem (and I'm talking if I made a typo error or multiplied wrong just a quick fix) when I'm great at math and always made it a point to behave. Whenever I needed to stand up against bullies she was mean and told me to "ignore them" but ignoring DOESNT WORK! Maybe it works for her oh wait it didn't not when that same bully called her the very name that describes her accurately (the b word). Hypocrite! You should've ignored him? Yeah what good did that do? Did you ignore him when he called you that? Exactly! Idk if she's still working there but I'm glad I don't have to see her anymore! I'm so glad my mom put you in your place and threatened to report you to the superintendent if you didn't change your behavior with me because the way you behaved was like that of a bully, it was senseless, counterproductive and disgusting. I always behaved myself in your class but you showed the same animosity to me and students who behaved themselves better as you did to the bad kids. I'm not dismissing the fact that we had bad students in class, I hated being with them too but you didn't need to get your anger out on the good kids. I'd say drop that stupid ego of yours and stop mistreating your students! And to some of the rude office staff including this tall African American woman who always came in either a frown and spoke nastily to me, I hope you know that your sins will find you out for carrying this attitude and ego of not wanting to help others. READ THIS IF YOU ARE SENDING YOUR CHILD TO THIS SCHOOL. This school was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. My older children went to private school, and we sent them to Franklin high school for less than 2 weeks, because private school is expensive. My youngest was enrolled in private school, but we wanted to see how they felt at the EGUSD district. My older children told me it was VIOLENT (many fights daily) and SCARY (many children would vape, smoke w33d, and use profanity in front of teachers with no consequences.) I put them back into private school because I was shocked to hear this. They graduated now, and my youngest child was having trouble at their private school. My youngest wanted to transfer because many children left the private school (the private school wasn't very friendly either). My child was so sweet, innocent, and intelligent. After 1 week of school, my child came home crying due to bullying. The children there are VICIOUS. My child was called fat, ugly, big nose, and many more curse words. My child was in leadership club, TJTV, honors classes, and they were liking it. The only reason I'm giving a bad review is the children and staff. The school has good classes to offer, but the staff wouldn't help my child when they were getting bullied. The children faced no consequences either and my child said there were numerous fist fights (pulling hair, throwing drinks, punching and tackling.) my child was SCARED TO GO TO THIS SCHOOL. Her friend was followed home and jumped. She got beat so bad, but the girl who jumped her never got expelled or suspended. My child also said the bathrooms smelled like w33d. Please don't send your child here. It is DANGEROUS, UNFRIENDLY, UNSAFE, and A HORRIBLE SCHOOL. read more

I never had such a bad experience before but this has happened multiple times. Front desk at student services is always so rude. The older ladies act like they're entitled and never greet you when you walk in. Always have to have an attitude, they don't make eye contact with you and their eyes are glued to the screen when they ask why you're in there. When I was waiting, a student walked in and none of the ladies said anything so he said, "Hello?" And finally one of the ladies said "yes?" Like??? Yes, you have work to do lady! Help this kid out?! Even when you call them over the phone, you can feel their negativity. They don't care to be there and they probably care less about the students honestly, lol. If you hate your job then why are you even there. At least put in some effort and have some emotion on your face and acknowledge people when they walk in. read more

If I could give a 0 star I would. Office staff is very rude. No manners. Principal and Vice Principal will not do anything to help you when a problem arises. If I could take my children to another school, trust me... I would but unfortunately this is my area and we are stuck. It's makes me sick to my stomach schools try to parade around their "0" tolerance for bullying policies, but yet so many fail to act when things are being reported, and teenage Suicide is still a result at times even today. I have only been in this area for little over 2 yrs my son finished at Helen Castello with honors and now attends Toby and still carrying honors, he's a great kid with a big heart, it's been a few months now that he's been put in a dangerous situation where he's constantly trying to defend another 7 th grade kid who is LITERALLY half my sons size & has been attack several times, the parents of this child have been at my door crying over their stressful situation and also thanking my son for trying to help when he's able to. Sadly enough no matter how many times the parents have gone to TOBY JOHNSON to get help there has yet to be a end to the kid being bullied!! The school has FAILED TO TAKE THIS SERIOUS AND KEEP THIS CHILD SAFE!! And now I am fearful my son may ultimately end up involved with confrontation due to the schools lack of helping!! Today this same group of TROUBLE MAKING KIDS recorded their plan to attack this little boy once again, you can hear the plan and watch the follow through of the kids running up on the child and him being repeatedly punched in his back and not once did he do anything to defend himself or fight, my son was with him and trying to pull him away from situation but said he was fearful they were going to be jumped!! Even worse Mr. Mcdougall the VP witnessed the whole thing several kids stated but he turned and walked away to get someone else to deal with it!! So my question is HOW MAN KIDS MUST TAKE THEIR LIFE FOR THESE DAM SCHOOLS TO UNDERSTAND HOW SERIOUS THIS IS!!!! This video has gone viral and has been spread throughout the whole school!!! HOW DARE TOBY JOHNSON FAIL TO PROTECT THE KIDS!!! At this point they are putting allot of other kids at risk who attend that school including mine by allowing these kids to continue on with this destructive behavior!! Please help by placing calls to the school voicing your opinions on how they are failing to protect these kids!!! I budget 5 stars for Franklin (very good school) and 3 for Toby. When I went here, you get stuck in a team and had all of my non-elective classes together. Hmm. Toby back from 07'-09' was the beginning to a very competitive HS -- that is if you start 7th grade on the Algebra 1 track and share all of your classes with those students. In my opinion you get the best teachers at Franklin compared to Toby and truly develop your academic skills there. Why the three stars? Lack of space in honors science, average teachers, some bad administrative experiences. Honors science: I was not recommended and couldn't get the class due to getting some B's in middle school (math/science are my strongest subjects!!!) but luckily through a lot of bureaucracy I tested out of General Science for high school (oh and they wanted to revisit this and put me in General Science / AP Bio / AP Physics at the same time Junior year!!!) Franklin hence put me on the right track with lots of AP courses and options to develop my science / math skills and graduate college as an engineer in 3 years... read more

This is my daughter's first yr at Toby and the EGSD. We came from the Dry Creek School District which is awesome, and my daughter has adjusted very well. The kids are well behaved, the staff is great, the principal and vp are awesome and keep things in check! They are always motivating the kids and have great programs for the kids. I love the diversity this school and EG offers and don't regret my move from the Antelope area, which I lived in 3/4 of my life. My daughter fits right in, and is meeting alot of kids. The academic standards and expectations are set high, so this is great. I hear the kids that go to this school and then Franklin High, end up at some of the best colleges in the country. Its a great feeling when you know that your child has the opportunity to have a great future! read more

We have kids in elementary, middle school and high school in Elk Grove. This review pertains to the office staff of Toby Johnson Middle School. Whenever I've made a call to either the elementary or the high school, the office staff at those schools are friendly and helpful. However, the office staff at TJMS is SO rude that I finally felt that I needed to say something - somewhere - to see if anyone else has had the experiences that I have had. We have seriously considered making a complaint to the school's principal, as this staff does answer to him, but as I stated before, we wanted to know if others had the same treatment. These ladies regularly answer the phone with an "I've got lots of things I'd much rather be doing" attitude, and it goes downhill from there. You ask your question, or let them know that your child will be out for the day, and often get hung up on at the end of the conversation with no goodbye. I've actually tried to engage them in conversation, trying to make the conversation go better to no avail. A few months ago, I got a phone call from the school from one of the secretaries stating that my daughter was sick and in the nurse's office. When I got to the school, and repeated what I'd been told, the woman at the desk sneered at me, saying "we don't HAVE a nurse's office!" Today, I picked up my daughter; went up to the counter, and just stood there waiting for someone to acknowledge me. No one ever said a word to me, and after about 4 minutes of being ignored, they just called to my daughter (who was in the office the school nurse uses when she's there on Wednesdays) and told her "it's time to go" without ever looking up to say hello/acknowledge that there was someone at the counter. I'm SO sick of the snotty attitudes that I decided to "Yelp" this school. I hope that somehow, this message might get them to change their tune. read more
