I would like to first state that I normally wouldn't review a public school, as I feel everyone's experience varies. My daughter had a rough go at a different HS, and recently transferred here... mid way through her senior year. At the other school she experienced every issue you can think from a public school; physical abuse, bullying, emotional abuse and a lack of support from staff. When transferred here, she excelled! PGHS has been a godsend! Our family has been so grateful for the experience and her chance to finish high school in peace. The staff are friendly and responsive, the atmosphere is clean and respectful. We are overwhelmed with the difference 3 mikes makes. read more

Terrible support team. Many staff members do not care for mental health and many will not show any empathy or compassion towards students. They advocate for "mental health awareness" yet are uneducated and lack flexibility. This school is very high in academics, however is not at all a good school that shows compassion. This school has failed me many times. There is obvious bias where some students get better treatment and education than others. Along with that, the dress coding system is terrible. They heavily sexualize women and will immediately yell at students for wearing tank tops. The faculty is very unprofessional in this area. I personally wore a tank top that showed nothing but my shoulders and arms- no cleavage no legs. I paired it with a long flowy skirt, very modest. The staff members Maj Xiong rudely interrupted me during lunch, immediately aggressively yelled loudly about my apparel, and sent me to the office. The office then proceeded to apologize for the dress coding system and emphasized that they had to conform to the rules. It is absolutely pathetic that there is no change- no matter who you talk to or what you say, they do not care about students. Many staff members will admit to these flaws, yet NOTHING is done to fix it. This school is like a jail, there is no freedom nor any allowance for growth and self expression. So much is wrong with this school- yet they spend money on the wrong things. Terrible experience here, education is ok, but overall I don't suggest sending your kids here. They WILL struggle with mental health and staff members WILL make them uncomfortable. Many students are constantly crying everyday, I know so many students who cry at this school constantly. And there is absolutely NO support, just hostility towards dress code. Mai Xiong is ABSOLUTELY disrespectful, unprofessional, and her attitude towards students is disgusting. I've heard many instances where she makes students uncomfortable. read more

My son attends and my daughter attends. My wife and I are very involved and partner with my child's teachers. That said, I find PGHS an excellent school. The Principal and his staff are conscientious, caring, professional, and by-the-book. They are a part of the excellent Elk Grove Unified School District, so they have those resources at their disposal as well. The athletics and teams are top-notch, and the students, by and large, are great people. I will take a bit of issue with parents, though. That, and the fact that the running track isn't surfaced are my two biggest frustrations about this school. As with most things in life, you get out of it what you put in to it. If you're a helicopter parent who feels you must be three to protect and defend your child no matter what, you won't have a good experience. If you engage, partner with the staff and faculty and become a team to educate and develop your child, then perhaps not. read more

Overall a great school though! read more

Absolutely mid high school would not reccomend, will not be returning. I would like my 4 years refunded.

My son had a soccer game here at Pleasant Grove High School and this was our first time at the soccer field. The school field seemed watered and well manicured. There was a good even cut to the field...great playing conditions for smooth play. The school had lots of parking for the parents and the school staff was very helpful when we asked about location of field. 4 Stars instead of 5 because its a 5+ min walk from parking lot to soccer field. read more

Terrible school, drugs disrespect from students and teachers alike! I pulled both of my kids out and now they are thriving.

My son had attended Pleasant Grove High successfully Freshman and Sophomore years in special Ed which requires an IEP. When he reached Junior year....ALL new special Ed teachers were assigned to my son and this new team didn't know what they were doing. They did not understand my son and how to work with his needs, which led to his junior year being miserable and caused him to become ill. I had many meetings with the IEP team who really did not seem to be able to understand how to incorporate my sons IEP with regular curriculum. The IEP specialist rarely returns my emails. There are also a few teachers that should Never be aloud to have Special Ed students in their classrooms, as they are incapable of understanding the IEP concept. I would encourage parents of special Ed children to find a school that better supports children with IEP's. read more

As a Class of 2014 graduate of Pleasant Grove High School, I've decided to take the liberty of submitting my review of this school through my 4 years of experience. I will try to cover various aspects of this school. Architecturally, the campus is nothing to be special about. It is very small for a school that holds over 2500+ students (being almost as small as its nearby middle school, Katherine L. Albiani Middle School). Faded darkish red colorings mark the rooftops of several of the buildings, giving it a surprisingly drab and outdated appearance for a school only opened several years ago. Drivers who park here must traverse a fair distance to the parking lot, since the designers seemed to decide to put the fields in the front of the school and the parking lot behind it. Why they decided to do this baffles me, since they could easily have replaced the fields with a parking lot in the first place. I've heard all the hype of how parents love this school, especially its academics and athletics. But I could already smell this B.S. from a mile away (excuse my language). The school offers a mandatory 7 period schedule instead of a block one. Lunch counts as a period. The academics can be challenging, though there are various differences between each student. There are also various differences between teachers as well. For example, you may be assigned Biology or Physiology with the famed Mrs. Grima, or forced to endure math with either the wearisome Mr. Dubrow or Ms. Dawson. Ms. Dawson in particular seems to be losing her drive and passion for teaching. Or perhaps she already has? For me, I've felt academics were always shallow and boring in the school. I know, I've achieved and also fallen, so I see both spectrums. An air of competitiveness and cockiness pollutes the environment even when it isn't explicitly being shown. You just...feel it, like a 6th sense. I've felt I was being taught more to achieve the grade rather than actually learn the subject. Ex: Can Mrs. Bjorgum know the difference between memorizing and learning something? Jesus Christ, feels like I was being taught difficult trivia in that class. And the principals are senile, rude individuals. it seems they care more about getting students busted than any actual, meaningful administrative work. Athletically, there seems to be a large amount of (often distracting) school spirit on campus, especially for the Football and Basketball teams. It seems that pep rallies are more for getting students riled up to pay more to support and watch these games than actually demonstrate any school spirit, yet neglect other sports on campus. Smart and deceptive economic move on Mr. Platt's part. However, I do applaud his efforts since it does help to fund raise other sports on campus (so perhaps it is a necessary "evil"). Socially, it really is a hit or miss at this school. Many people are shallow and I've seen alot of lonely people within such a large school population. Quantity of interaction doesn't necessarily equate to quality of interaction, a trait that smaller schools enjoy better. For me, it is hard to fit in with that "right" group and I know there are many others like me at this school. If you're going to send your child here, be warned that achieving any lifelong friends is going to be extremely difficult. But this is from my experience. To sum up my 4 years, I can only describe it as a living stressful hell. I wouldn't recommend sending your child to this place. Or perhaps any other school in the Elk Grove Unified School District. This is from my experience, but I've also had to put up with a difficult family life at home. Perhaps your child may receive a better one. Perhaps not. But would you be willing to take this risk? read more

I love being a PG student and I am proud to be an eagle! The teachers at PG are knowledgable and take time to address students' individual needs. The school has reputable scores on state tests and high SAT scores. The athletic program is exceptional and students run a plethora of clubs that cater to many interests. read more
