Horton Arms - You have to love a grumpy gargoyle!

The food arrived piping hot and I swear there was half a cow on my plate - just so much meat! AND absolutely lashings of gravy - its like they knew the way into my heart yet again! Plenty of creamy mash, roast potatoes and all the trimmings including cauliflower cheese cooked to perfection although personally I would have liked a little more cheese but I'm a greedy guts. And lastly, the Yorkshire... large, crispy, gravy sodden perfection. I wanted a roast. I got a great one. And since I've last been they've renovated the garden area. There's now a huge outdoor seating area with cute gargoyles on the wall and heated booths. It's just lovely! Horton Arms, you really have stole both my families and my heart! Long may it continue.

Once I stepped in though, to the stares of the "regulars", I immediately found out that they do not serve food. But a couple of kind patrons engaged me and offered a suggestion: the Horton Arms. One of them was obviously very fond of the food there, and that was about all I needed to decide to try them. So I walked there -- and it's a good ways by foot, but then I'm after some good food... Unfortunately, they had finished serving dinner by the time I arrived, about 19:45 (7:45pm). That seems a bit early to me, but what could I do? Answer: return the next evening. So the next evening I arrived in time, and was quickly seated. I perused the menu, which had my usual favorites like Fish and Chips, and Steak and Ale Pie. But there was something on the menu which I'd never had, and it really piqued my curiosity -- a cheese and onion pie. "That can't be all there is," I thought; that's like ALL cheese... isn't that too much cheese?? But British Pubs generally do pie crust so well you could put damn near anything inside it and it would be really lovely. So I was a bit torn. The waitress arrived. I was explaining to her how I was trying to decide amongst my options, the cheese and onion pie being one of them, when she told me that the c&o pie was really nice... and that's all it took. When else will I have the chance to try this? -- and from a highly recommended pub too. Decided. The result? OMG! That was so good! See the accompanying picture I took. Just incredible. And the cheese was not overpowering. Now where am I going to find THAT over here (U.S.) when I crave it?? Especially in Minnesota!? (Probably nowhere...) Looking at all the different dishes that went by me while I was waiting for my slice of deliciousness, I can pretty well bet that anything you order here will be a delight. Yes, I recommend you try this place. It is now a destination for me every time I am in the Oldham area.

Rose of Lancaster

A good range of beers on tap, especially considering that the pub is owned by J.W. Lees, a fairly small local brewery. The pub caters well for football fans as there are plenty of screens. The only let down in the Landlord, who I have fortunately never spoken to, but have experience being rude to customers on many occasions, for no understandable reason. I also went to the Rose of Lancaster to do the pub quiz once and was unable to do so as the Land lord (Who is the 'Quiz Master') was too drunk to operate the PA system. It turned out that this was because Man UTD had been playing before the quiz was due to start and had lost, and the land lord is a big UTD supporter. How unprofessional.

I recently signed up to receive offers from the Rose of Lancaster, a pub I've frequented for…read moresomething like 30 years on and off. I did this after filling in one of their little customer review forms giving them a glowing assessment in which I said something to the effect 'decent food at reasonable prices served by great people.' Then on Friday the offers began to come to my email address '20% off food and drink if you book online.' So I tried to book a table for two for Saturday and found there were no tables available. Well, there you go. Popular pub with a restaurant in high demand. Can't be helped I thought. So my wife and I go for a walk down the Rochdale Canal and end up at the Rose at about 4.30 on Saturday to find an empty restaurant. I'd gone to pick up the car and got in five minutes after my wife who had had a chat with some of the young but not so enthusiastic staff. She had got us a table and a bottle of wine and asked one of the waiting staff about the offer of 20% off. The answer was that it had expired. 'But we only got an email yesterday, tried to book on line but your site wouldn't let us and now I'm sat in an empty restaurant so can you explain why there were no tables available?' There was no explanation forthcoming but the manager had said we needed to book on line and bring a print off of the email. I then arrived and after quite a wait while two young women waiters wandered about paying no attention to us or the people who now occupied the next table and another sat near the till doing very little, one came to us to take our order. This time I asked if we could see the manager to discuss this great offer of 20% off all food and drink. After all we were in a pub we liked, at a table in a nice little restaurant absolutely determined to spend our money. The manager came and began to patiently talk down to me by informing me that we had to book online to get the discount. I was still holding out in my determination to spend money in this pub and in my faith that a manager might just want some of my hard earned cash enough to offer something of a compromise. I was wrong. She insisted that not only did we have to book online, I had to print off the email. I informed her that I had tried to book online but her site had not allowed it; that the email also said I could show her the offer on my phone, which I did and that the place was empty other than us and the people who were now occupying the next table. She then informed me that I probably couldn't book online because they were very busy. She was oblivious to the evidence of the empty room that sort of contradicted her statement. And then she returned to her mantra that we had to book online to get 20% off. So what could we do? I said that we would rather not spend any more money or time in the place so could we have our bill for the wine and we would go elsewhere to eat? The bill came, I paid and sat for a while in a virtually empty restaurant while we finished the bottle of wine and watched the people at the next table get up to find someone to take their order for some drinks. I don't think we will be going there again.

The property has also just undergone a refurb giving it a light, airy and modern feel through the addition of a splash of colour and bench seating. Food is typical pub grub and they have added a carvery (personally not my thing!). Well stocked bar with JW Lees beers. Serves a decent cappuccino too! Area is split between tap room - showing football, main bar and a more family orientated area here also. Only eaten here a couple of times and had burgers and sandwiches, all of which were good for the price. Often come here for a beer or coffee in the afternoon or early evening in a relaxed atmosphere. Gets very busy on a Sunday. Only gripe is there constantly seems to be reserved tables with no one on them - it is a pub - quit with the reservations!

I was served 2 small pieces of ham followed by one nice slice of turkey and then a ultra thin half piece. Moving on to the vast selection of veg but to be disappointed in that what was left, in that they were dry, the dregs or just couldn't be bothered refilling up I didn't know! The roast potatoes needed further roasting, the cauli was hard NOT 'al dente', the broccoli was hardly any left. The stuffing was bits only left on the rim, sweetcorn again scrapings and carrots I didn't dare take a spoonful incase my partner wanted some too... Anyway, some 20 mins later all lights over the carvery went off and clearly 8pm was close! The waitress came over just after asking if everything was OK?... Oh dear, dont ask ME that unless you want an honest answer... Needless to say the above was all politely discussed. She managed the situation very well and apologised and gave a full refund without question or without me having to suggest this. Considering this carvery is double the price of its neighbouring competitors (both Toby and Crown are within 10 mins drive of here) I was expecting a little more. However customer services was good so I will try here again a little earlier in the evening when I can review the rating I have given.
