While visiting Paso Robles we found this place on Trip Advisor. We called in and they let us make a reservation for two for an hour before. Score! We were paired with Lolita, who was extremely knowledgeable about the wines and Paso Robles in general. She gave us tons of recommendations for food places near our airbnb. Her service was absolutely outstanding. The winery looks like an old saloon and was definitely a casual vibe. We felt super comfortable there the entire time. We planned this trip before I found out I was pregnant, so I was unfortunately unable to partake in the tastings. However, they poured me a complimentary glass of grape juice in a wine glass, to make me feel like I was able to partake. The grape juice was so good we left with a bottle. The tasting itself was an hour long and my husband enjoyed all of Lolita's recommendations. We will absolutely return after our little one is born! She let us know that it is kid friendly. read more

The set up for this place was great! We were recommended this place by a friend who is an avid wine drinker. They thoroughly enjoyed their tasting here because there was so many wines to choose from! First you must have a reservation, which I recommend booking at least a week in advanced to be safe. We came on Thanksgiving weekend. They take your temperature and are pretty good about wearing masks. You are walked to your area outside where your tasting will be held. Each party is separated about 6 ft apart. Our pourer's name was Kelly. She was awesome! Super friendly and knowledgeable. Our tasting fees went towards the bottle of wines and we ended up purchasing 3 bottles. Definitely recommend this place for getting your money's worth and just having fun. read more

I can't say enough good things about my wife and I's experience. We reserved a wine tasting spot and despite showing up early, we were served effectively right away. Our "guide" for lack of a better word was very friendly, informative, and helpful in understanding the different wine offerings they have, pairings, etc. Our favorite wine was the Liquid Love, and the "Toby-tini" they made us - top to bottom our experience was impeccable. I ended up buying six bottles. Richard was charming, knowledgeable, easy-going, and just a pleasure to be around. He even made reservations for us at an incredible restaurant when we casually mentioned possibly going there for dinner. I was reading another yelp review which said- in addition to the "get Chris" that she had been to 5 wineries but liked this one best , and how well Chris explained things... Everyone here, including the woman who answered the phone and especially the receptionist were super sweet. Things were reduced because of the Covid AND the fires, so that we could only sample a few of what we we're interested in purchasing.... still despite the "limitations" it was a special experience, in large part, yes, because of Chris and the very cool receptionist. Wow - we were pleasantly surprised and happy that we didn't listen to some people who said we shouldn't go because this winery is "too big and commercial". (I almost don't want to share this because it already seems to be popular but I also hate for it to get a mistakenly bad rep...) First of all, the staff was AMAZING! They were all super friendly, funny, knowledgeable, and helpful without over-selling anything (Jessie!). We only saw a few wines on the tasting list that we thought we'd like so we shared a tasting. Oh boy, not only did we find even more wines that we liked, we ended up buying six bottles (the most we've ever purchased from one place)! My favorites were the Arneis, the Tempranillo Rose, and the Sangiovese. I liked others too (ie. one of the chardonnays), but I wanted to "let" my husband pick his favorite three too - LOL. Tobin James never disappoints! Every time I am in Paso Robles, Tobin James is at the top of the list of wineries to visit. Every person who has ever served us is always so nice and they make the visit such a fun experience. A lot of other wineries in Paso can be pretentious and the servers can be a bit snooty. Tobin James is the place where you go to have a good time with good people. It never fails! And I'd definitely suggest becoming a member. MMy sister and I visited Tobin James without an appointment. They tell us that all wineries in the Paso Robles area needs appointments in order for you to have wine tasting with them. I believe I had read somewhere that walk-in was accepted. that is the reason I did not make reservations for Tobin James. But they looked to see if we could be squeezed in and they sure did and what a great experience. We even became wine club members. If you can become a wine club member there it is one of the best memberships we have come across. Kate was so knowledgeable and informative about wines and recipes. The atmosphere was open and inviting. The grounds at TJC are spacious, perfect for group parties or just hanging out with friends. The inside tasting room and store area provided a charming environment to sample their product. We met Sarah who was our tasting specialist for our group of 4. My first intro to Paso Robles was through Tobin James Winery and it was love at first sip. The winery is located on east end of highway 46 which is on same vicinity as Eberle and Robert Hall Winery. The property itself has saloon type vibe, reminiscent of the Wild West. From the moment we walked inside, the place was bustling and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. We walked right up to the counter and were immediately served. Now that's service. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful as well. What's great about this place is that wine tasting is complimentary. No limits either on how many wines you can try. You get a list of their wines and you just check off the ones that you want to try. This was my first time here, so I went all in on everything. My favorites were 2013 Merlot, 2015 Petite Sirah and 2015 Saugvignon Blanc. They even have a few sweeter type wines like Zinfandel and Charisma which are popular with the ladies in our group. The wines are good value and very affordable. Price range from $12 to $55. We signed up for their wine club and got 15% discount on all our wine purchases. We enjoyed them over the weekend during recent family get together. Another plus is there open an hour longer than most of the wineries in the area, which close at 5pm. At last, my 400th review and what better place to review then one of the best wineries ever! This is my third visit to Tobin James Cellars and every time I visit, the wines never disappoint and the service is the best. Upon arriving after a grueling drive from home, we needed an attitude adjustment, so what better way to take the edge off then a little wine tasting. Our host was Terri and she was truly the best. The wine tasting is always free and you get to taste more wines than most places offer. Terri was excellent in figuring out what my tastes were after just a couple of sips. She was knowledgable, friendly and blew me away with a taste of the reserve 2015 Petite Syrah that I just had to have along with several other bottles. After all, fall is coming soon and what goes with hoodies and leaves falling?? A big glass of their incredible Zinfandel! I ended up purchasing six bottles and was given an additional 10% discount which was appreciated. The property is a nice size where one can wonder around the gift store, sit outside by the outdoor fire place and sip, and they even have a kid friendly area so Mom and Dad can imbibe a little. Tobin James also offers a wine club called the James Gang. Each year you are sent out two shipments of wine (8 bottles each shipment). They are shipped during the spring and fall. The cost is $179 and overall a good value. In addition to the wine, you receive other benefits like 15% discount on all wine purchases, invitations to special events, a gift with every shipment and more. I haven't joined yet but am now giving it some consideration as I figure I can gift some of the wine I receive to friends and family. This is one of the more popular and fun wine tasting rooms you might visit. The wines are generally crowd pleasers and the tasting room itself is welcoming and attractive. Snooty, they ain't. This is much more like a fun wine bar than a tasting room, and that's a good thing. The whole place is Western themed and supposedly, one of the bars was actually imported from the Midwest and was actually frequented by Jesse James. The decor is charming and the front porch/entrance area literally looks like a scene out of an old movie Western. Some of the wines are just ok while others are very good. I'm a huge fan of their Ballistic wine but you can get that wine in many stores. They offer a ton of different wines here so you might as well branch out and try ones you can't find anywhere else. Kids are welcome--there are a couple of free video games for them along the side of the room. Fun, casual, lively atmosphere and good wines. Count me in. read more

Just want to do an update for a warm gesture that Tobin James Winery did. There was a slight error on what I was charged when I bought three bottles of wine. I did not notice it until I got home in SoCal. Sent them an email about it just to see if they will provide me with a small credit. Instead of doing it, they offered sending me a couple of bottles via UPS for free. That gesture cost a lot more than the credit I was expecting. Talk about excellent customer service. This is one for the books for me. Wines I originally bought have been consumed and enjoyed by relatives overseas who raved about them. Besides what I had during my wine tasting, I now get to enjoy more Tobin James wines. Can't ask for anything more. Small winery but great service and quality wines~ My Bf and I booked a tasting on a Sunday at 5 PM. We were promptly seated at the bar, there is a small lot for parking. Interior is small but room to interact with other guests and servers. Tasting is $20 per person-60 min session, and fee is waived if you buy $40 or more of wine bottles at the end. We loved the Chardonnay and moscato, Chardonnay was super buttery and easy to drink, moscato was also not too sweet but with full of flavor. We tried 7-8 small wine tastings and got pretty LIt~ This is the place to go for any wine lovers~ Perfect for a intimate night out. read more

The wine tasting is FREE and it's unlimited tasting and that's why this place is always crowded. What also make this winery great is that it's kid friendly. Last time we tasted at Tobin James was about a decade ago... it was a memorable experience, if for no other reason that it was more low-key and not pretentious like many wineries. More of a fun, casual vibe with decent bang-for-the-buck wines. So we decided to stop again on the way down to San Diego, and were pleased to see that things are basically the same (but more tasting bars now, and busier.) We don't love all of the wines, but we do like most of them, and they have a huge variety (including some varietals that are harder to find, like tannat, barbera, lagrein, etc) The tasting policy is pretty interesting, too: they give you one hour to taste whatever you want. We wanted to be responsible, but also wanted to try so many different things, so we asked for small pours and chose to share them between the two of us. We also made use of the dump bucket (except for the ones we really liked!) This allowed us to try many (many) different things, and we enjoyed them enough that we actually joined their club and walked away with a case of wine. read more
