I woke up craving chocolate pancakes and left The Toasted Bun never wanting to eat them again. We waited 30 minutes to get our food and the home fries were not fully cooked and eggs and sausage tasted like they sat under the heatlamp for 20 minutes. To my horror, at the register I noticed food sitting under the lamps for at least 4 minutes and still sitting there as I walked out the door. The waitress didn't seem to care much about the quality of the food she delivered to our table, and I didn't seem to care about leaving her a tip. But I still did. Wasted hour an of my life, and my stomach regrets making the choice to eat at this poor excuse for a diner. read more

I'm not quite sure why people are so taken with this place. Yes, it has a quaint little diner atmosphere but that doesn't really mean it deserves a 4 star review. You can go to Foxy's or Billy's and get even better food right within the same area and both are much more excellent in terms of decor, service, and deliciousness. The breakfast burrito and breakfast quesadilla are good but their chilaquiles are overly spicy and covered in some cheap ranchero paste. The cinnamon crusted french toast with nutella and bananas are pretty delicious too. The worst part about this place has to be the service. Each time we have been served by a heavyset older woman who is seems to have a repulsion to doing actual work. It usually takes 10 minutes for her to meander over and get your drink order. Then another 10 till she brings it. And she will only bring 1 drink at a time. So if you're a party of 3 or more, I'm sorry. One of you is simply going to be without a beverage! The same rules apply to your food. One plate at a time. And if you're allergic to something or simply don't want tomatoes... Tough shit. Really, just go to Foxy's or Billy's. I don't know how you mess up everything on a breakfast plate (aside from the toast), but they managed to do so. This is the breakdown of my chicken fried steak breakfast: Let's start with probably the easiest thing for anyone to cook... Scrambled eggs. Runniest scrambled eggs I've ever had in my life; it had the texture of a loogie that was freshly hocked up and spit onto my plate. My "hash browns" were more like a large lump of limp steamed potato shreds masked behind a thin layer of slight browning. That little outer layer was nice, but the inch of potatoes in between was unseasoned and mushy; no amount of ketchup and/or salt and pepper could save it. The actual main portion of the dish; the chicken fried steak wasn't all that bad to be honest. HOWEVER... What gives the chicken fried steak its usual appeal and signature flavor is the country peppered gravy that adorns the top of it. This is where that portion of my CFS fell short. It was a gray mass of unflavored slop. It tasted like nothing! As if it was just there to lubricate the chicken on its way down your throat. The service wasn't a total failure, but for only having 4 tables seated in the whole place, I would expect to at least get ONE refill on my drink; but that didn't happen. It didn't really help that the server/cashier looked as though she just rolled out of bed after a hard night of drinking. All that said... The toast was good... read more

Went here a week ago with a friend. We both got their pancakes. I asked waitress to make them fluffy for me, but they came half burnt. I had her take them back and instead of cooked, I cut through and literally the batter came oozing out. I had her take them back. (My friend was too nice to ask and ate through the half burnt pancakes) After he finished, I had asked for the check. Even though I had them sent it back TWICE, the waitress actually tried to charge me for my meal when i sat down and only consumed a delicious glass of iced water. Big and fluffy. No, that's not how I like my men, but if you do I won't judge. I'm talking about pancakes. I like them big and fluffy. Toasted Bun knows pancakes. And if you're feeling like having breakfast at 3 in the afternoon, you won't be disappointed coming here. If you know what's good for you, you'll order the corn pancakes because they will blow you away. It's like a flat version of cornbread, but fluffy. Just moved to this part of Glendale from the more congested Galleria area and getting to know the local eats. The Toasted Bun is two blocks away from my new place, and my boyfriend and I walked there for the first time today. The "TB," as we've since nicknamed it, is a great little lunch diner with your average diner selection. What we loved about the place was the low-key atmosphere, friendly service and appropriate prices. My bf and I ate pretty contently for $13 total. The food is average but justified by average prices, I think. My bf had the BLT, which he liked, and I had a Cajun chicken sandwich, which was OK. We both had their homemade clam chowder (soup du jour on Fridays) and it was pretty delicious. Would go back for that. They're supposed to be opening up for dinner soon, which I'm looking forward to. read more

Stopped in for breakfast and decided to sit outside since it was a beautiful day. The waitress came over and took our drink order. The two coffees and water came out fairly quickly but our daughter's hot chocolate order didn't make it out for another 30 minutes. We sat waiting for quite awhile and no one came to take our food order. While we were waiting, two ladies at the next table who were there before us got up and left. That should have been our big clue as to how slow the service was going to be. Two other gentlemen who were waiting to be seated decided 15 minutes was too long to wait for someone to help them and they left too. One other gentleman who was seated near us also decided to leave after being served coffee and no one coming to take his order. The food server finally came and took our order and we did get to eat but the tortillas that were supposed to come with my order made it out to the table after I finished eating and the toast that was supposed to come with my daughter's order never made it. All in all, about an hour and 45 minutes for a "quick" breakfast stop. The food was just okay and definitely not worth the wait. Not sure if this is how it always is or if they were just short handed on this day. No one apologized for slowness or explained that they were short staffed so it's hard to say. Quiet, wonderful, super cute pictures of the regulars on the walls. My favorite is Uncle Bill's Combo - biscuits and gravy + bacon + 2 eggs. I like to add extra biscuits when I'm really hungry. I like the gravy a lot. My boyfriend always gets the 2x2x4 -- 2 eggs, 2 bacon/sausage, 4 pancakes or french toast. The food isn't exceptional (I didn't like their chorizo n' eggs), but it is a good place that makes me feel warm. Cash only-- read more

The Toasted Bun could be one of those places you don't find out about soon enough. Well, I'm here to preach the gospel according to breakfast. This side street hash house is synonymous for satisfying your Sunday morning breakfast desires. Nestled in the distance of the majestic Foothill Mountains in lovely Glendale, "the bun" is a perfect place to refuel after a long night of drinking or whatever else it is you crazy kids do at night. The decor is a Hodge Podge of different eras. They do display oodles of snapshots. I couldn't tell if they were of famous people or not. Their breakfast is scrumptious and lunch is also gratifying. The first time I ate at the "Toasty B" they were closing in 5 minutes. I told them I would just go. "No big deal," but they insisted I stay and I was out of there in 20 minutes. If they chef spit in my eggs... they were the best eggs I've ever had. Spit and all. The Toasted Bun is a definite pit stop on your Sunday morning sober-quest. read more

Not good for groups. The menu is pretty good. Individual seats are an alternative to not sitting as a group. The staff is friendly and eager to help out. But at times it takes them long to just come by and get your order for drinks. I had to wait thirty minutes until they asked for what drinks I wanted. They gave me my drinks ten minutes after. So far it's been a total of 50 minutes and I have only got my drink. They got my order completely wrong and didn't have a bunch of their sides that they offered. read more

This is breakfast food. It's not one of those pathetic, over-the-top brunch places that pander to patrons with a fucking mimosa gimmick. This is breakfast at its most breakfast. If you're coming on the weekends, prepare to wait if you're in a big party. Hot tip: come alone. If you go solo like I do, you'll be seated quickly. We were expecting to go to Eagle Rock, but lo and behold, we found reviews for the Toasted Bun. My husband and I went there this morning, sat at the counter, (wanted to, not because we had to: I always sit at the counter if there is one!) and we both had steak and eggs. the steak was cooked RIGHT and everything was good. Even the coffee was quite good. The service is adequate*, the space is pretty straightforward (not kitschy...it was clean & slightly shabby but not in an icky way) and the food was very good. I can see making this place a breakfast spot once every few weeks. *Adequate is "good enough", but the servers pretty much brought you food and left you be. In a neighborhood coffee shop such as this, I'd have expected the women to have a bit more "character", like those batty servers at Frank's in Burbank. read more

I saw this little spot one morning as I was walking into my nail appointment right next door and noticed the line that was formed to enter the restaurant. As I was getting my nails done, I popped open my Yelp and saw the great reviews, my Fiancé and I walked in right after my nails were done and although it was busy, there were a few open tables. We stood there for about 5 minutes and were glanced at but never approached, not one person came to seat us or anything, we left sad and disappointed that we didn't get a chance to eat there. A few nail appointments later we decided to give it a try and am I glad that I did, we walked in and were sat down almost immediately and offered coffee. Our food was delivered to our table hot and steamy within 10 minutes of ordering it. It was delicious to the very last bit, my guy ordered the huevos rancheros (so good that he ordered another to go for his lunch at work) and I ordered the biscuits and gravy that came with eggs and bacon. In 30 minutes, we had been fed and were happily (full) on our way out. I wanted to leave a fair review because I left disappointed the 1st time I went but I just knew that I had to give them a try. You remember back in the day when people still read the Sunday papers? This is the kind of place they would go to do that while enjoying a plate of homemade breakfast, washed down with basic coffee, drunk from a very well-used dark navy mug. A lone TV hangs on one wall, intriguing photos of old Glendale on the opposing wall. A senior gentleman assumed to be one of the owners, gingerly walks around clearing tables from time to time and motioning waiting customers to take a seat. The last chair at the bar counter looks broken and leans to the side at a weird angle, frozen in time, like everything else there. You get the picture... Tea time with the Queen of England this place ain't! There are a million different choices on the menu when it comes to food but only one when it comes to the hot caffeinated stuff. No cappuccino, no latte.... Not even my go to substitute: sparkling water, just plain old coffee. This is old school stuff and if you enjoy that kind of a set up then you'll love this place. Being the spoilt soulless sissy that I am, I like my modern comforts and don't dig this whole throwback vibe, so my visit was nothing more than a semi interesting experiment. I went despite the uninviting location (right next to a tire shop), inadequate parking, and unappealing diner style décor and service, which I typically avoid, because I'd heard they have decent food. I wouldn't mind the whole family owned/operated style places if it didn't imply inefficient, fly by the seat of your pants kind of management, but that just seems to come with the territory and after 50 years in the business you'd think they'd know better. Can't say the service is that great here, not awful but not terribly attentive either. The furniture is of course old - cutlery is old, water is served out of those semi-transparent hard plastic cups that have been attacked by the dishwasher one too many times and lost their will to live, and the pièce de résistance: a nice layer of dust on top of the back-splash of our table. The food is not bad - I loved my over-medium eggs in particular, but French toast and pancakes were only slightly above average and ultimately there just isn't anything special enough for me to recommend here. I won't be going back but giving it three stars instead of two, because I'm sure there are people out there who will enjoy this place, it just wasn't for me... read more

I really enjoy my visits to the Toasted Bun. This is a regular spot for my husband's family, his grandpa'a picture is one of the ones on the wall. I have only had their breakfast items and I have to say I can't complain! The pancakes are nice and fluffy and the fruit actually looks and tastes fresh. The staff is very friendly. On our last visit Edith was our waitress and she did an amazing job. She was sweet to my girls and provided service with a smile. Nick at the register was also very friendly and provided great customer service. This will definitely be a go to place for our family. read more

Ive given them 3-4 chances but it a waste of good money... I think that, for a place that is fairly well known, they are slightly short-staffed. Breakfast is always a little hectic on weekends, so having another server might help a lot. That being said, this breakfast didn't change my life. I ordered a coffee and chocolate chip pancakes with bananas. They weren't bad, but I wasn't overwhelmed, either. I'd like to try the cinnamon nutella French toast... The ambiance of the place is cool. Brown leather seats and booths give it that old school feeling you love when you head out for breakfast. This is the spot to visit if you like fresh homestyle food. The breakfast is really delicious. I had pork chops and eggs today and they were great. Cooked just right with eggs over medium and marbled rye toast. I haven't even mentioned how good the coffee is! Our server, Amber is the best. I really wanted to like this place. I really did. But, when you've been to the south and had Waffle Hut... this doesn't hold it's own. We stood waiting for a table for about 5 minutes. The place was crowded and loud. Ok, good for them, they're busy, it must mean they're doing something right. We waited FOREVER to get service. Luckily they had transformers on tv with subtitles. (note sarcasm.) I ordered the standard eggs, hashbrowns, sausage and pancakes, the BF ordered chicken fried steak. It took us almost 45 minutes to get our food. I'm a patient person, but what took so long? I was craving pancakes and really wanted to support a mom-and-pops place, but I took one bite of the pancakes and couldn't eat the rest. They're pancakes! I make the bisquick kind at home and I'm happy. We ended up paying about $30 and I felt that I would have had a better customer service experience at the IHOP up the street. This spot rocks. I've been a client for a while, and with the new owners, the place is changing for the better. The service and food are great. I had the Buda Bowl several times, and the meatloaf with fluffy whipped mashed potatoes. Thier coffee is always fresh, and I might say better than some of the big name brand franchise places. When you talk to the owner, he listens and makes his upgrades. The floors are new as the upholstery. It also looks like they are doing some expanding and more upgrades. Great job read more

I used to love this place. Food was great, service was excellent. I'm not sure if it was just today, but the service could not be worse. We were told to seat ourselves so we approached an empty table inside. The table had not been cleaned. A woman and man quickly and rudely approached to let us know not to sit down and to wait on the side while they cleaned. We approached the table to let them know we wanted to sit there, we did not sit down and listened to them by standing to the side. They began talking amongst themselves. The woman saying that she couldn't believe we were going to sit in a dirty table and that we did not give them an opportunity to clean. Then the man tells the woman, "es que son animales". I couldn't believe what I had just heard. I'm sorry if they were busy or we approached when the table had not been cleaned yet. We did as we were told and did not understand why such comment was necessary. Needless to say, we will never return. read more

Toasted Bun is the perfect neighborhood place. They do a good breakfast and the Jumbo Combo is everything I want for breakfast on the weekends. Also the Breakfast Burrito is better than any I've had. It has both bacon AND sausage in it and it's huge. Enough for two meals. The owners and staff are super friendly and get to know you the more you come in.
