Thank goodness for Toast Box. I say this because I know of no other place that's accessible that offers a decent platter of Hainanese Chicken. Usually you'd have to go to a specialty restaurant at a hotel, but thankfully with Toast Box, you can dispense with all thought of going through so much trouble for some decent Hainanese Chicken. Of course, that's not their only item on the menu; it wouldn't be "Toast Box" without... Toast. You can choose plain butter, peanut butter, blueberry jam, and of course "Kaya" or coco jam. True, you can mostly have these at home, but I doubt you can enjoy it with a drink like hot milk tea, and with a soft-boiled egg on the side. Strangely enough, a merienda of this is best enjoyed on a HOT day. I can't quite explain it. Anyway, more about the Hainanese Chicken: I recommend you ask for the breast part, since there's more meat. More often than not, the drumstick-thigh portion has less meat; some people may argue that the leg-thigh part is tastier, but then what's the platter of Hoisin, minced ginger and sesame oil, and the chili sauce for? That's just my personal preference, but go ahead and enjoy whatever part of the chicken you prefer, you won't be disappointed. The rice that comes with their chicken is really a treat as well, since it's cooked in the same broth (I think. I'm no chef). As for the drinks, I honestly have yet to try the other drinks besides the hot milk tea and the Ginger-Lime Soda; I just find it so refreshing so it's hard for me to try anything else! Oh there are a few other dishes that are good too, like the Hainanese Chicken SANDWICH if you're not particularly in the mood for rice, the Laksa soup, and the Nasi Goreng. A word of caution, though: try not to wear a white shirt if you plan to eat the Laksa; maybe I'm just a messy eater, but I have noticed that it's hard to eat soup without splattering all over myself. Maybe it's the spoon or my overzealous appetite when I eat at Toast Box! read more
