1-Star Review for TLC Pools & Spa If I could give zero stars, I would. My experience with TLC Pools & Spa has been a nightmare from start to finish. Its taken over 10 months to complete my pool -- far beyond what was promised -- and throughout the process, communication was inconsistent, vague, and often nonexistent. I paid my final installment, trusting that the job was nearly done, but to this day I still haven't received the heat pump that was included in the contract. Despite repeated follow-ups, I've gotten no clear answers or resolution. At this point, I feel completely taken advantage of. Avoid this company at all costs. What should have been an exciting home upgrade turned into a frustrating and costly ordeal. We contracted with TLC Pools & Spas (Matt & Denise Smith) in January 2025 to build a pool for our home. We've paid a total of 90% of the contracted price but is in 60% complete. As of today, the pool remains incomplete and estimates to finish are 5-6 times what was left on the contract . In July 2025, their foreman informed us that the business was shutting down and our project would not be finished. We have since learned that many other customers (15) and subcontractors are in similar situations, with significant sums paid and work left unfinished. 10's of thousand of dollars were paid days before shutting down operations. One person paid $35k the day before he learned what was going on. Our experience from start to finish was extremely difficult -- communication was poor, timelines were not met, and the project was abandoned despite substantial payments made. We would encourage anyone considering working with this company to carefully review their current status and speak directly with recent customers before signing a contract. More than 3 months of no progress. Come to find out they have deleted their Facebook page, fired employees, and dragging everyone else through their self made swamp. Horrible business practices, and vague replies to emails for timelines to keep kicking the can down the road. They have been paid 95% of the agreed upon price and still have nearly 40% more to go. No delivery of equipment either. $100k paid to TLC but only $25k worth of work done before ghosting us. 3 months no progress update- I have made multiple attempts to call, text email TLC Pools with no response. Lyon Financial has made attempts with no response, either.. $25k in missing pump, automation, filter, heater, chlorinator, robotic vacuum, lights $20k retaining wall, planters, and drainage not completed $10K in yard grading and plumbing not completed $15k in aggregate plaster and tile not completed $5k in mastic, concrete sealing, cleanup not done -subcontractors were contacted. Matt and Denise Smith have not returned any of their calls or texts either to get payment. We were told by Matt that the mason crew wouldn't be available for weeks.. that was a proven lie after talking with subcontractors. -Matt and Denise Smith are running a Ponzi scheme masquerading as a business. They need new pools to pay for the last ones. Do not start any new construction with them. read more

I strongly recommend working with another pool builder before entertaining TLC Pools and Spas. They are known to not pay their trades. You'll either have a lien on your property or law suits pending. read more

Just finished redoing my inground pool plaster and deck. Also replaced my wood fence. Matt, Lisa, Larry, & John were very helpful, knowledgeable & patient with me and my wife as we picked out our options and changes.. As were all their workers. I would use them again. read more

I hired this company to build out pool in June 2023. Finally 11 months after the start day they did finish the pool. We knew it was obvious after the first cash payment they were broke and robbing Peter to pay Paul from starting new projects. We had his Sub-contractors tell us they took 3 months to come back because they were never paid. They showed us the text between them and TLC demanding money before they would come finish my job. I didn't not give final payment until my pool was completely finished even though they tried daily to get it before hand. The customer service was horrendous after the first meeting and down payment. I told Matt myself it was obvious they were broke and not paying contractors and he just acted like I never said it. I'm glad our night are is over and I PRAY this review helps someone else from having the same nightmare with TLC. This should honestly be a ZERO Star review. read more

I've never dealt with this company personally but my good friend is under contract with them at the moment and boy they should have read the reviews before purchasing because all that is described is exactly what they are going through. And the owner took 70k from them and then posted a gfm what a true piece if work. read more

We just finished our pool built by TLC pools. Matt was great to work with. Great communication via phone, text &email. He showed up & came to our house several times during the quote process. & showed up numerous times to check out the progress. Building a pool is construction & a process & it took us some time to build our pool/spa/arbor so just expect that when building a pool or any construction, You will have delays with weather, material & labor. We love our pool, it turned out great. we wouldn't hesitate to use Matt again. read more

Terrible company. There is a reason they have such bad reviews. Do not use them unless you want problems cause thats all this company is. From the start to finish on a project, Matt the owner, i watch rip off customer after customer. Reviews speak for the company! Choose wisely! There are alot of good pool conpanys and this is not one of them. One major problem with this company is they will subcontractor most the work to other companies without telling you. They will break your irrigation system while digging up for pool as well and will not even fix it and if they do they will charge you alot. The wall thickness of his pools aren't thick enough to last in texas. The quality of his work and the materials he uses is cheap. If you want a pool you will be repairing all the time then use Matt @ TLC Pools. read more

Matt and his amazing team built us our dream pool in record time last summer. Matt met with us and designed the exact pool that we wanted for our backyard. He and his team were always on time, responsible, and efficient and they walked us through all steps of the process. Matt is both professional and personable which made us know we were in good hands. This is our first full summer in the pool and needless to say it has made our lives better during these challenging times. We highly recommend TLC Pools if you are looking to build a pool. We contracted this company to build us a pool, owner was very fast to collect payment at every stage, sometimes asking before stage was complete. After finished, we noticed spots on the bottom of the pool in the plaster and he blamed us stating we were in the pool before it had cured. A little later we received notice that the plaster guy is filing a lien for non payment. We offered to pay the plaster guy again just to get warranty work done. He stated that wouldn't work, we would have to pay all of TLCs past due invoices with them for them to start warranting their pools. 4 years later I still have no pool warranties. He preaches to be a very Christian man but has no problem screwing his clients. I'm shocked he is still in business. read more

This company does not believe in good business nor honesty. They will not stand by their word or honor their warranty. There are other families having the same issue who have not heard back from Matt period. I would not recommend this company to anyone, you're better off buying a blow up pool or one from Walmart you put together yourself just to avoid the headache and heartache caused by this company. Most unprofessional company I have ever had to deal with. Hired them to come out and deep clean our pool, which they did a good job with, so we hired them to do a monthly pool service. They stated that they would come weekly, it would include all chemicals, brushing, vaccuming, cleaning filters and baskets all weekly. Getting them to actually come out was like pulling teeth because they would ignore our phone calls and texts and never tell us when to expect them. When they did show up, they would show up unannounced and one time let me dog out of our back yard so I had to chase him around the neighborhood 6 months pregnant at that. They only came out two weeks and complained both times that cleaning our pool was like cleaning two pools... even though we have a bird cage enclosure and our pool is not large. The second time they came they left without even brushing the walls and said they weren't coming back for the other two cleanings we paid for in advance. DO NOT HIRE THESE CROOKS. read more
