Aguachile negro - made with citrus and yummy fatty Kampachi

Hands down one of my top 3 Mexican restaurants in Philly, absolutely worth the short drive! Tucked away in a sweet little storefront, Tlali is an intimate, approachable, and elegant gem perfect for a solo bite or special occasion. Immediately upon entering from the busy street you can tell this place is the culmination of a lot of experience and care. Everything on this menu is fresh, made from scratch, and so delicious. Even the tortillas are made the traditional overnight Indigenous way which makes all of the difference in the world. I recommend ordering either an aquachile, coctel campechano (shrimp and octopus) or the albondigas meatballs in chipotle as a starter. If you are with a group be sure to order one of the moles (either the ribeye or the branzino both of which they make from scratch) for the table. Don't skip the flan and cafe de olla.

I had the best meal on Friday night here! I heard about this restaurant a while ago on FYI Philly and finally made it. I like Mexican food, but wouldn't say it's my favorite. I went in as skeptic and thought it would be fine. I was so wrong, it is spectacular! We ordered the Bistec (steak tacos), and the Michmole (salted branzino). We asked the waitress what else we should get and she recommended the Aguachile Negro (ceviche dish). We ordered conservatively just in case it didn't meet our expectations. The steak tacos were the best I've ever had. Instead of meat chunks, it's thinly sliced steak that is perfectly seasoned with guacamole, salsa rojo, onion and cilantro. The branzino was perfectly cooked, flaky skin and soft, moist fish. Accompanying the fish were died potatoes and sliced cactus in a sauce. The best are the freshly made tortillas that come with the dish. The waitress said the dish is supposed to be eaten with the tortillas so I made small bites and topped it with the salsa verde. So good! I saved the best for last...the aguachile negro. That is one of the best ceviche dishes I've ever had. It was so unexpected to get a dish like that from this tiny restaurant in Upper Darby. It's terry thinly sliced fish (not sure what kind), thinly sliced cucumbers and habanero broth. I don't know what was in that broth, but it was so good I could have drank it alone. The entire dish was so refreshing, perfect salt and tang to it. It also came with freshly made crispy tortillas. The tortillas and dipping sauces can't be overlooked because they're all homemade and so flavorful. The waitress was so great. She explained the dishes to us we were curious about and recommended that spectacular dish. It's a small restaurant with an open kitchen area so you can see the chef cooking. On our way out, we said we'll be back and we almost went back on Saturday night. It's just that good!

Went here for a casual dinner and were blown away by both the quality of the food and the friendliness of the service. Everything was served in traditional barro (clay) dishes, which instantly made it feel like being back in Mexico. We ordered the horchata by the pitcher, sopes for appetizers along with the bistec and carnitas tacos. The meats and vegetables were excellent, but what truly stood out was the freshness and quality of the tortillas which were easily some of the best I've ever had. We'll definitely be back again soon!

Not your everyday Mexican. Second visit since first time was worthy of a second. Re-ordered the branzino, as good as the last time. Served over some cactus salad. First time for the shrimp and octopus in a tomato avocado mix. Similar to a ceviche except seafood was cooked. Not shown was a salad that was pretty plain. Homemade tortillas are the best. Tiny BYOB in Upper Darby, pleasant server, street parking.
