Odd to review this place as it's situated in the building I work in but as I eat there every day…read moreit's about time I covered it. For a while R34 was a restaurant and got good reviews for the quality and style of the food. It was open on Friday and Saturday evenings and the press cuttings on the wall suggest it was initially successful. Unfortunately the location has been the restaurants downfall. After the initial flurry of interest they've slowly and surely cut back the opening hours to the point where, today, they are better viewed as a budget restaurant or meal focused cafe that is only open during the week (and office working hours at that). The food is ok. Open for fairly standard breakfast offerings (think roll and sausage or toast) and at lunch there is a choice of three hot dishes, as well as a sandwich bar, soup of the day and a scattering of cakes. Due to the location, the bulk of the customers come from within the building (like myself) or another nearby office. Most afternoons will see some people popping in for a, reasonably good, coffee. The building warrants a mention, as R34 is housed within the India of Inchinnan building, a (listed) art deco frontage with a modern verdigris and glass dominated extension, which is most famous for being the site where airships used to be built (hence the R34 name). As for the cafe, there isn't much in the way of competition (Erskine and Renfrew not exactly hot spots when it comes to cafes and restaurants) so from that point of view it's good to have something dependable in the local area. If you are passing, and you'll spot the building as it's very distinctive, it's not a bad spot for a coffee or a quick bite to eat. Also, you might bump into me! (wait, that's not a selling point...).

Did not realize Yelp made it to Scotland :)…read more An American in Scotland (albeit for only three days); Was in this building a few weeks a go for a business meeting at our Glasgow Office. We had them cater coffee and tea for the 7 of us and well as small finger sandwiches for lunch. I really love coffee (black) and tea (plain, no sweetener or cream) and usually don't get very good of either BUT have to say they provided what I have to say is the best cup of coffee I have had in many many years, maybe ever. Maybe ever is a pretty strong statement but have to say it was a joy then enjoy. Not too bold, very smooth, totally enjoyable. The finger sandwiches very very good with a very UK'ish selecting of meat and veggie finger sandwiches. Did not try breakfast or other foods while I was there BUT looking forward to a return trip.....

And I have to say it was love at 1st bite! Since the 1st meal, I went back quite a few times, each time service was great and friendly, Garvie just has a nice cozy feel to it. The 1st time I ordered a pint of beer and the Roast Breast of Chicken wrapped in Parma ham on top of truffle mashed potato with sautéed gem lettuce with peas and pancetta and peppercorn sauce, oh man was this dish perfection, and the truffle mashed potato was divine! Another time at the Garvie again, I ordered a flat white and carrot cake, oh sweet bliss, this was a darker carrot cake then ones I have had before and the frosting was not the cream cheese type nor a buttercream type either, it just was perfectly sweet and complemented the cake perfectly. Ever since my 1st visit I had been craving the truffle mashed potatoes and knew I had to go back one more time before I left, so my last meal at the Garvie was the Garvie & Co Club, it had chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and topped with a fried egg came with a salad and I added a side of the truffle mashed potatoes, this sandwich was perfect, loved the fried egg on it, so good, the truffle mashed potatoes were still just as good at the 1st time. If you in the area, give the Garvie a try, I bet you won't be disappointed.

I'm sure I'm one of the few people left in Glasgow who hasn't tried Tribeca, and finally made my…read moreway there for lunch. At first, I was impressed. The place is nicely decorated after the recent refurb and has some interesting prints on the wall. Menus were in front of us when I arrived although they are very worn and tattered - maybe some new ones are in order? I ordered the buttermilk pancakes after hearing so much about these and was impressed to be asked whether I wanted the bacon crispy (yes, of course, it's the only way to eat bacon). The meals arrived shortly after we ordered. And I mean shortly - maybe 5 minutes, 10 at the most. There was a large stack of three very puffy pancakes in front of me, a couple of slices of bacon and a jar of maple syrup. Now, I've eaten a lot of pancakes in my time. I was disappointed that these didn't have a hint of being freshly cooked - they were warm and doughy in the middle rather than being piping hot. I think maybe they'd been cooked and reheated. The bacon a strange flavour, like it had been cooked on a grill with a burger (and not in a good way). And the maple syrup was incredibly runny, like water, rather than a thick drizzly consistency that you'd normally expect. It really wasn't to my taste but I know a lot of people really like Tribeca, so maybe it's me, not them. Our plates were cleared and then shortly after the manager came over with two more meals - nope, we've already eaten. Our bill was then delivered to the table next to us - nope, that's ours thanks. It came to around £10 each with a drink and I was pleased to be on my way.

I had…read morelistened to people rave about it for yonks before I took the plunge and got a birthday breakfast down here with my friend last year. My first experience was great. Got fluffy, fresh pancakes smothered in syrup and topped off with bacon rashers. Washed them down with tea. Loved my meal and still felt envious of my friend's full English which, unfathomably, looked even better. Paid up; left feeling satisfied. What more could a girl ask for? Of course i returned! Great service, smashing scran - you would. So it's with a heavy heart that I deliver the news - it wasn't that great second time round. The food was still amazing, and the girls serving us were still lovely. But they forgot our order. We waited an hour. We were ravenous. We had to ask three times before it eventually came. And they forgot my boyfriend's bacon but still charged him the extra money for it! I do not like to complain about food. We're so fortunate to be drowning in restaurants in Glasgow at the moment. The cafe scene is always evolving to become better, stronger, to include local sources. So service that falls short of a certain level tends to stand out. The people serving us could not have been more apologetic. We got a discount because, after being a barista and doing customer service for a decade, I know how to complain. When you complain, take into consideration how rushed off your feet people are when they're serving you, and all the rudeness they have to sustain. Working in hospitality should be mandatory as a rights of passage, because it's relentless and not always rewarding (even in a swell place like Tribeca). I'm still in customer service and if you're an inflated, pompous git you'll not get anywhere with me. So I really don't like having a whinge, but things went wrong in here that day. And waiting an hour and a half for food is a bad impression, especially when you've raved to your partner about this place for weeks! In the end we got a discount, sincere apologies, and the poached egg/salmon combo was incredible. The girls who work in here are truly lovely, and I would give it another bash on those accounts. But being looked over for 90 minutes while other customers blithely dine is a disappointment.

Glaswegians, your cafes have definitely spoiled me and I can't find anything that compares to this in the U.S. When you walk in, you automatically get this cozy and warm feeling. Try to get a seat in the upstairs dining area, because this is where you will feel the most warmth. I also like sitting in the bar stools by the window because I like looking outside at the rain. If you find yourself waiting for a table, just take that time to browse the pastries, savory foods laid out, and even their selection of cookbooks. Their selection of cake and tarts change daily, but if they have leftovers one day then they serve the leftovers the next day until they are gone, but a lot of the time their pastries sell out on the first day. Bonus to this is that your pastries are definitely fresh! But the pastries still taste good even if they are a day old. Trust me. My go-to pastries were the Belgian Chocolate Cake or the vanilla custard tarts. This cake has hazelnuts inside of it and is served with raspberries, chocolate bits, dusted with sugar on top. If you love chocolate, this cake is the way to go. The vanilla custard tarts reminded me of home (because I would get Egg Tarts at Chinese bakeries and this vanilla custard tart tasted just like a egg tart) The only difference is that the tart at Kember & Jones had flaky layers of crust, which made the tart even better. My go-to drinks are hot chocolate or the Moroccan Fresh Mint Tea. The hot chocolate is served with foam and little chocolate bits on top. The Mint tea is served in a clear glass, but it comes hot (which was weird because I didn't think you would serve hot drinks in a glass) but I understood why because it has a bunch of mint leaves in it that changes the color of the drink to a light tan. It's cute and if you have a sore throat, it will make you feel better. Other things that I have tried and loved were the Warm Waffle (because it was served with syrup and fresh fruit), the French Lemonade (It was pink lemonade with a little bit of sourness), and the macarons (They make different ones each week. Try all of them because they go fast! I have to say during Christmas time their Christmas pudding one tastes pretty good, too.) Last thing to note is that the staff is very nice. I never really feel pushed to leave. They are polite and attentive.
