[[HIGHLIGHT]]The chairs were incredibly uncomfortable and would probably only work well if you're a size 2 or less as a normal size woman's bum does not fit in it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It took our server 15 minutes to bring us water and 15 more minutes to take our drink order, then another 15 minutes to take our food order, even though we were ready. Food did not arrive until we had been there an hour and 15 minutes. The food was decent, but the pepperoni pizza was incredibly greasy and the bottom beyond floppy. The first person's meal hit the table a solid ten minutes before mine, the last to arrive, did. They were polite and waiting for all orders to arrive, so as a result, their food was cold by the time mine came out. The prices are too high for what it is. Went to TIPO spur of the moment, and was able to get seating at the bar. The bartender/server was very helpful with meal ideas. I had the red wine rigatoni with Chianti, braised short rib, Burrata, and Parmesan. Not a huge portion, but this was excellent. Rich flavors that really worked together. I was a little annoyed that we had to purchase focaccia - $8 for 4 small pieces, and more annoyed that when we asked for a little olive oil for dipping, they wanted to charge us again for the oil. No thanks. Was it a great meal? Yes. Will I probably go back here when there are so many good Italian restaurants in Portland? Doubtful. read more

Tonight we dined at Tipo after hearing so many great reviews, and we made our reservation two weeks in advance. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations. Our reservation was at 7:00 PM, and it took about 20 minutes before anyone acknowledged us to take a drink order. By that point, we had already reviewed the menu and were ready to place our full order, but our server would only take drinks. Another 15 minutes passed before we received them and were finally able to place our food order. We ordered three pizzas and a pasta, and our server mentioned he was going to wait a few minutes before sending the order to the kitchen because they were backed up. An hour later, our food still hadn't arrived, and our server told us he was "just putting the order in now," before quickly backtracking after seeing our reaction and saying it had actually already been sent. Another hour passed before we finally received only two pizzas and the pasta -- one pizza was missing entirely. When we pointed this out, our server immediately said, "Oh yes, it'll be right out." Less than a minute later, he returned and tried telling us we had only ordered two pizzas and a pasta. There was no ownership of the mistake and no apology. [[HIGHLIGHT]]By this point, we were starving, freezing, and the only table left on the patio, so we just made the best of the situation with what we had.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Throughout the entire evening, there was very little acknowledgment from our server. So here's the deal. Pasta was good. Meatballs were good. But the menu isnt accurate as to whats in the dish. We had two dishes come with ingredients that weren't listed in the dish on the menu and the wait staff didnt seem to know what the dishes are/actually have in them either. So if you're adventurous and eat anything great, but if you have a restricted diet at all for any reason you might run into an issue. Our New Yorker had burrata dumped all over it-- why would that not be included on the menu? (Didnt look like any of the new yorker photos on yelp or insta for Tipo). Expensive to get a dish that has surprise ingredients you can't eat. read more

The food at Tipo is outstanding. We had 4 appetizers, and 3 pastas and a pizza for dinner, plus 2 desserts. Every single dish was perfectly prepared. The app that stood out was the carrots al forno. Perfectly charred, dressed in so many flavors, something delicious to dip them in, and sprinkled with pistachios...they were amazing. The chicken liver crostini is a favorite of mine...I get it every time I go...it is amazing every time. The blood orange is so fragrant and cuts the richness of the chicken liver pate beautifully...as do the pickled ramps...perfect pairing of flavors. The gnocchi stood out among the pasta dishes...soft pillows dressed in a sweet and savory squash sauce with quince for a bit of sweet tartness...it was so good. Caccio e Pepe was perfect, as were the spaghetti and meatballs. We've had the pepperoni pizza many times...every time the spiceyness is a little surprising, but so good...and the way the pepperoni is slightly charred...amazing. This was my first time trying dessert at Tipo, and now I regret not having ordered it before. It was incredible! I may stop in just to have dessert at the bar....it was that good! We tried one of ice cream sundaes, and the apple crisp. The sundae was perfection....from the little dish it was served in, to the chopped bits of various accoutrements (Marconi almonds, and sweet little crunch candied pistachios), to the best cherry I've ever had, to the smooth creamy ice cream. The apple crisp was served in its own tiny wrought iron pot, hot, with cinnamon ice cream...also perfectly designed for exactly the right ratio of ice cream to crisp to apple. I have been wanting to try this place forever and finally got a reservation. Make sure to get a reservation because the tables fill up fast. There is a bar that is first come first serve so you can probably get in there but that was full all night as well. They also have a great outdoor space in the summer. The service was also very friendly. We got a few different things and everything was amazing. It's not traditional Italian but Italian with a twist. I got the bolognese and it wasn't a red sauce which was interesting but it was so good. We also got the appetizer of buffalo mozzarella and prosciutto and that was fantastic. My friend got the risotto and also really great but not traditional. I would love to try their pizzas. Overall there was so many things on the menu I would want to try. Cute little restaurant outside of Portland, tables were a little close for my liking but service was good throughout the duration of dinner. We split a bottle of wine that we paid approximately $50 for and was really a $13 bottle of white wine. We started with the delicata squash wrapped in prosciutto which was my favorite thing all night and would highly recommend. We then split the Tipo pepperoni pizza (must add sweet Cherry peppers) and the Cacio e pepe. The pizza was very flavorful but the undercarriage was EXTREMELY floppy and our toppings dropped onto the plate every single bite which was frustrating. We looked up many bucket list websites while on our trip in Maine. Tipo was highly rated on the "places to eat" list. We obviously had to try it! The ambience was quaint but a little noisy in my opinion for a rustic fine dining experience. The waitress was absolutely wonderful. She was attentive, helpful and pleasant. She went out of her way to give us dining suggestions as well as tips for our week here in Maine. I have to say, service like that is hard to come by! The food was speedy to come to our table. We decided on a few small plates to start. The aricini balls, meatballs and eggplant burrata. All of these plates were divine. As an italian myself, I tend to judge restaurants by the flavor and quality of their sauce. 7 out of 10 i must say! Thats a great score coming from me :-)! I ordered the rigatoni carbonara. It was delicious but tasted more like a caico e pepe with pancetta than a carbonara! My husband had the spaghetti and meatballs which he enjoyed. Portion size is small, so be sure if you have an appetite to order small plates with your meal. We had the house made gelato (pistachio) which was killer. Tiramisu also 20 out of 10! Do not go here if you are physically disabled. They are very ableist and made me feel really uncomfortable. I'm a wheelchair user and I made a reservation for the patio. The patio was closed because of raining, and when I got there they told me they had moved the reservation to the bar, which is not accessible for me. They were totally unwilling to try and find me a table, and they didn't apologize at all. They were petty rude and uncompromising about it to be honest. My love of Tipo has decreased since I ordered it through 2DineIn to be delivered. The arancini was just - bitter? It just wasn't delicious to me. I think I've been spoiled by Lazzari's suppli, which is pretty much a much more delicious version of this. It was not very good at all. I got the margherita pizza and added mushrooms - adding mushrooms cost $3, and there were barely any on there. The pizza arrived soggy and not appetizing. Maybe takeout/delivery just isn't their thing. Oh well. At least I learned. read more

We stopped by this sister spot to its big brother Central Provisions and we're so glad we did. It is a short drive over to the back cove and with reasonable street parking. The menu was straight forward but the two ladies at the neighboring table recommended the Burrata Peach salad so we tried it - delicious and sizable to share. I had the spaghetti and meatballs- it's so rarely on adult menus that my inner child mandated it. Delicious as well. Good sized portion. My wife took the appetizers for dinner route and loved her fried eggplant and broccoli al forno. She also sampled my pasta and gave it 2 thumbs up. The Negroni Promavera first, and the Chianti with the meals were spot on . The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and punctual. We now have a new spot for Italian dining in Portland. Amazing as always! One of the best kept secrets in Portland! Total gem and we will always make sure we stop at Tipo for dinner when in town.

Tipo has really grown on me over the years. For one, it might sneakily be one of the best happy hours in the city. Every day that the restaurant is open (including Saturdays!) happy hour runs from 4-6 pm. Aperol spritz's and Sangria's are $7, with additional great deals on Prosecco and local beers. The restaurant also likely has the best pizza outside of the Old Port. And yes, I realize there is an Otto one street over. The remaining menu consists of small plates and pastas. The small plates have improved significantly over time, with the "small" green salad ($10, and huge), Burrata ($16) and chicken liver mousse crostini ($9) being my favorites so far. Portions are generous for sharing. While the pastas are delicious, the size is disappointing for the $21-$28 prices. Come before 6 pm, drink for cheap, and split a pizza and a small plate. This will quickly be one of your favorite off-peninsula stops. read more

Saturday night 4 of us went to Tipos for the first time. For appetizers, we had citrus salad, beef carpaccio, prosciutto di parma. it was all very good and was shareable. The garlic bread was very good and very soft bread. there were 8 slices. Two of us had Pasta, carbonara, campanella. I found carbonara too salty and I guess I don't like Al dente for pasta. I would have like the pasta cooked a little more. The pizza was New Yorker and Tipo pepperoni. My husband said the pepperoni was very spicy. we also had desert Tiramisu, pistachio ice cream and collani. they were all very good. The wait person was very good.
